- In this video Big Tractor Power is out in the field with a pair of JOHN DEERE tractors and balers. Viewers will see a 130 pto hp JOHN DEERE 4440 tractor and a 120 hp JOHN DEERE 4255 tractor operating a pair of JOHN DEERE 348 small square balers equipped wit model 42 bale ejectors. Viewers will take in the sights and sounds of kick baling hay in Central New York. The video will share the JOHN DEERE 348 baler and model 42 bale ejectors 35 year production history, specifications and 1987 and 2022 list prices.

Spent my high school and college years baling first with a JD T-14 stacking the wagon directly from the bale chute. Next came a JD T-24 and then a JD T-224 each with kickers. Each hay baler was powered by either a JD 630 or a JD 3020. Those were days I’ll never forget or replace! This was also in central New York. Thank you for bringing back those wonderful memories.

I grew up throwing square bales all summer.. didn't even bother me then... I would die if I had to do it now... I bought a Vermeer round baler couple years back with the bale master computer controller... It basically does everything for you.... Makes you spoiled. Thx Jason.
From 11 to 15, I spent the summer baling hay and straw for farms in our small town. I was their bale ejector. It was fun; I miss those days; it meant I was younger. Great video.
My grandpa had a 4440 for a while, he sold it about a year ago, so far that's the biggest tractor I've used. I used it on a flatbed to haul our dozer around. That was 2 years ago, I was 15 and I really had it made :)
I worked for that farm 20 years ago and ran both of those units baling hay and straw. At that time they ran 3 balers, the third being powered by a 4240. They used 15 wagons and often stacked loads in the field usually giving around 3000 bales to unload the next morning. They used to fill 11 or 12 local barns with hay and straw every year for a total of around 90,000 bales all stacked by hand! Good times!

Yup I remember them times we used 3 wagons and would just keep on loading empty a wagon and and bring it back to the field so baler kept on bailing
@@garyposthuma9607 another farm I worked on I ran a New Holland 575 baler and had a crew unloading wagons and keeping empties in the field.
Best day with that baler was 2100 bales
How long and how many guys did it take to unload 3000 bales?
@@wingrider687 sometimes had 2 crews unloading in 2 barns with 6 or 7 guys each. We'd get the loads off, eat lunch then go stack them again for morning
Back in the early eighties when I was a farmer the 4440 John Deere was brand new and I fell in love with that tractor and still am today that is my favorite all-time tractor 4440
This brings back so many memories. As a little guy it was my job to kick, pull, slide, ETC the bails to the person unloading the wagons. As I got older I was the person unloading. Then the person in the mow stacking. It was a family affair. Everyone got involved including multiple neighbors. When My grandparents passed the farm wasn't the same. It was eventually sold. I worked for another farmer throughout high school. I miss a lot of things about farming except throwing bales. I wish I had a quarter for every bale I've touched. I could've retired at 18. I buy 20 bales, twice a year now for goats. I'm not in as good of shape as I once was. I would have a heart attack/ heat stroke halfway through the first load.
Really the 348 is an updated 336. My 336 is 50 years old. I run it and a number 30 bale ejector on my 4020 diesel. I have update the tucker fingers and added an electric speed control on the ejector which makes it much easier to make turns without having a bale miss the wagon. I have four home made wagons which hold about 600 total and a quick release hitch, but I still have to get off to rehook the next wagon. I do about 5000 bales a year but when I worked on small dairy farms in the late 80s two of us did about 15,000 bales. The hard thing now is you can't get any help anymore as no one is willing to work, or promise to come and then don't show up when the hay is ready. I can get a 65 year old man to come. He says it keeps him in shape. I usually don't now any more hay than what will fit on the wagons.
Ran a 336 with a 30 ejector for many years in my youth. The fun part was packing your own wagon at the end of the day, or running the baler while someone was stacking the wagon. Had to remember where that plate was pointed at so you didn't get one in the head. These ejectors were great on hillsides, you could level them and fill a wagon nicely..........
This is a really cool combo I don't recall seeing much in our area in the 90s-00s. We ran a boarding stable and training operation so we did small squares, but we hired out hay cutting and baling to another local farmer who did ours as well as some other neighbors. (Massey Ferguson tractors and New Holland balers) Naturally, that meant we were the bale movers and had to do it all the hard way. One of these would have been pretty sweet had we owned a baler. The nicest thing I remember was a borrowed bale lifter that would attach to the side of the pickup and was driven by the movement. It would bring them up to the bed where they could be loaded back more easily. Most of the time it was dad, brother and I, and sometimes a few friends taking turns driving, walking, and stacking on top thr trailer.
Great video Jason. Had a neighbor that had one of those. Farmers used to put up thousands of bales of hay. Not so much today. Spent many a hot summer days behind regular balers on wagons, mowing away hay, etc. Dad used to bale small round bales with those old Allis Chalmers balers. Those were some tough handling hay. Had to use hay hooks to control them. Even then I would rather be baling hay than a lot of other chores.
We bail with a 2010 John Deere 328 chute Baylor that we bought new. For one summer I had a 348 that had been bought used with a stroller and I couldn't bring myself to like to throw her very well so we went back to a shoot when we milked cows on this farm and did not feed round Baled hey silage we would bail about 10 to 15,000 a year most of that behind an old John Deere 24 t of which we wore out 2. We are through and through red paint in case I ate around here but we bought our first 24t used but very well cared for in 1978 and after we sold our dairy hard we build a terrific amount of horse hay so we bought the second one for a backup and used them both for several years and then we decided it was time for a new one so we bought the 348 which we weren't too proud of and then we bought the 328 new and we really like it since about all we bail anymore is second cut in straw and the only Bill about 2,500 a year we didn't go for the thrower. As most of our hay ends up round bailed and wrapped. But we really like the 328 we pull it most of the time with a 75 horse Case IH 75c two wheel drive and it plays with it
Run a NH 316 with a model 70 thrower behind a Ford 8240. A bit labor intensive but it works for us. Thanks for another great video. I especially love these hay ones.

Boy you brought back memories of summers off school jason. I worked on our farm for my grandpa, and 2 other local farmers from time I was 13 til graduated high school every summer baling hay. 2 had the exact same bakers and pap had a new Holland with belt kicker. I literally put thousands of bales away each summer between the 3 farms. I ias those days all back through the 90s
Same for me growing up but we only did round bales for our cattle operation and I was always ready to start moving them when summer started.

4020 and 4440 are the 2 best tractors Deere ever made.
I helped stack bales on the trailer and then unload to the barn. As a teenager, I loved the opportunity and we had a lot of fun. Good old days and worked for a nice family farmer.

Growing up in the late 70’s I enjoyed watching my neighbor run an IH 686 with a 346 baler and kicker. It was neat watching it through bales.

This year I picked up a year 2020 348 bailer. I run it with my 2355. The combination is awesome.

We put up part of our hay in small square bales sold through farm supply stores for horse owners, 4H and FFA projects, and others that had only a few animals. The bales were picked up and stacked using a New Holland bale bed. Most of the hay was in large square bales for truck shipment to dairy farms that were 100 or more miles away.
We use the same combo John Deere Baler and pan kicker on our farm. Great video!
Oh my lord 19 hay wagons! An I thought 3 hay wagons was enough. Dad has a Massey Ferguson 127 throw bailer powered by a Massey Ferguson 285 cab tractor. Only time we stack bails was with straw than me an my older brother would be stacking in the wagons an goofing off in between.

The farm I work for hires someone to round bale their stuff. Speaking of which, sometime maybe this week or so, I'm gonna have probably at least 50 round bales to move, because one of my bosses swathed several different pastures that add up to approximately 20-30 acres. They have a MacDon 9300 swather with a 16' MacDon 920 auger head. I use a John Deere 7800 with a 740 Classic Loader equipped with a bale fork to move round bales.
All we ever did to our 336 was work on it. See they got these two working some how? Maybe it was just for the day? They always leave one string looser than the other too, no matter how you turned the cranks. These are people are lucky. John T.
Back in the 1980-1986 in Denmark vi had a bale trower. A fork sitting beside of the traktor throwing the bale all the way in to the wagon. It was quite of a skil to hit the wagon.
That was so cool to see the bale ejector tilt while taking a turn. I never knew those did that.
It’s a neat feature. The belt type throwers also have this feature. It’s handy.
Never got to see a kick baler in tthe UK or Eire but it is a fascinating baler and idea! Thanks Jason
I wonder why they did not make it to the UK? They free up labor in the field. It is interesting how some machines are regional.
We had an international small square baler when I was a kid and we'd hand stack on flat hay racks. If we didn't stack perfectly we'd lose some on the side hills. Went to help our neighbors with almost this exact set up one time thinking it would be a cakewalk by comparison. Until I saw that green missile flying at my 12 year old head!🤣 Good times.
That is one thing I don't miss stacking little bales up in the barn in the middle of summer or unstacking them to feed out in the mud and ice in the winter. Though I dare say I was fitter then than after the switch to rounds
Great video. Many years ago when I was a kid we used to hand stack bales on a trailer and back off into a shed - I did it for our farm then for neighbours. By the end of the season your hands have developed hard ridges from the baler twine
It was long hours and tough work. My first job as a kid was unloading these kick bale wagons. I enjoy every minute.
I always thought this would be a great way to gather bales, but none of the farmers I knew when I was working for the farmer down the road from us would use them. Too many broken bales in the wagons and too hard to unload them with the bales all helter skelter in the wagons. They also wanted to get as many bales stacked on the truck or wagon as possible by stacking them neatly. I spent many summers as a young teen picking 65-80 lb bales up off the ground and lifting them up over my head to be stacked by the guy riding the truck or wagon.

My grandpa had an old small Hesston baler but didn't have an injector and wagon because before my grandparents were first married they would would load hay by hand. My grandpa and great uncle I think not sure would have a competition to see who could stack before one of their pitchfork handles break. Now my uncle Ross took over the farm because my grandparents passed away and my family farm runs 2 4850's with both 4x4 Hesston 4910 baler and a 3x4 7434 Hesston (AGCO) baler.
We run a balier and bale ejector just like that one we make about 20 loads of hay and straw a year for our cows. When my dad was little he usted to fill 5 different people's barns full of little bales. He always says when he was growing up there was not a day in the summer that the sun was shing that he was not mowing a barn ful of little bales
Fifty years ago this was the way hay was up. Especially in the North East with kickers. Labor was plentiful and round balers and big balers were not on the market yet.
I grew up using a john deere 24T with a mechanical #2 bale ejector and a few hours and polishing I had it working like new after sitting in the weeds for 10yrs
Those balers were built to last a life time.

We had I believe a 327 baler with kicker. We used to still hand stack those H&S wagons. Me and my cousin got pretty good at aimin that kicker to help the other stack. Think my body still hurts 30 yrs later. Lol Great video
It’s hard work. Less work than pulling it off the baler or ground. My first job as a kid was unloading kick bale wagons. I enjoyed it.

We still bale small square for the horse market south of MPLS/St Paul MN using a John Deere 4430 tractor and John Deere 336 baler with kicker it's work but the most profitable part of the farm operation

We still use a 336 John Deere baler with a kicker on it for straw. We milk cows in a tie stall yet and the little bales are nice and quick to bed with a straw chopper

I've ran a John Deere tractor and kicker baler years ago. You had to get the trigger lever bent just right to get it to kick right. It worked though.

We have a jd 338 baler with a 42 kicker but just use it to bale straw since we get all our hay made by a custom big baler

That 4440 was a great tractor. I remember you having a video a few years ago with guys standing on a bale wagon stacking the square bales. I know that was a hot, nasty and itching job.
My father had 2 IH balers with throwers . I think one of them was a 435.Then we switched to John Deere, a 336 with a 30 kicker.What a difference!! Then we switched to a 328 with a 40 kicker. Hardly use now we mostly put up haylage or round bales.Nobody wants to work like that anymore. My employees and my son tell me that if I want to do small square bales better find someone else to handle them!!

Still bale a few hundred little bales for extra feed when nothing else is quick. Once a few years ago the baling tractor ended up being a Deutz D100 06 while baling my brother was curious what the tractor could handle since it was overkill so he shifted the PTO into 1000rpm and ran the tractor engine at 1100rpm should be a PTO speed of 550. He said it wasn't ideal but it worked.

Still using a 327 baler with a 40 ejector, run it with an international 886. Does the job for me.
Very cool baling team. My neighbor had a 4 post 886 that ran a 347 baler in the 1980’s. They had a kicker on it and then went to a quarter turn to drop bales when they purchased a 1069 Automatic Bale Wagon.
I have a jd 336 we do around 3000 bale's a year. The only hard part is finding help. Southern WI

This can’t be a real farmer, there’s no 14 year old me trying to stack a bale and at the same time not get cleaned out by the next…
They'd must have a very motivated barn crew. 19 wagons, 16 to 18' long, a 16' wagon will hold approx.100 bales and a 18' wagon will hold 125 bales like they are loading them. The mows in the old bank barns held around 2500 bales each. That's more than filling a mow before dinnertime. I wonder where they find enough kids that work that hard? BTW, good video.
I run a NH 570 with a pan style bale ejector.. first pan style we had before that we always had belt thrower kickers.. I don't mind the pan it works good.. I'd like to know the difference between the JD pan bale ejector and the NH pan bale ejector. They almost seem identical
Very interesting. I have always wanted to know that my self. In the 1980’s the JD pan was the model 40. At that time New Holland built John Deere’s skid steer loaders. Maybe JD provided NH with the kicker? I want to say NH offered a pan kicker from 1985 to 1991. I hope to get to film one some day.

We kick all of our squares with our New Holland 565 and belt thrower run with our IH 5088…much easier than stacking on a flat wagon with our old 273, even though my Dad still likes to have someone stack in the wagon

Bailing hay with a cab tractor is some serious overkill unless that's all you have. We use a John Deere 2030, 2630 or a 2840 for the job. They offer a huge savings in diesel compared to the 4440. I used to buck bails when I was a kit. It sucked.
The Sound Gards are 35 to 50 years old. There is something to say for a paid for tractor that offers a bit of extra comfort. Can you work a longer day and pay a little more in fuel? I know a farm in NY running 8000 series tractors on balers. They bale two thousand acres of straw and 800 acres of hay a few acres year. They have a 2240 but going over that many acres why not do it in comfort.

Anyone ever see a couple guys riding and stacking while the baler kicks them up? Get more in the wagon? Super dangerous but I want to say I think I remember the big neighbor boys doing this I was too little to clearly remember but we got a ride and a sip of beer on the way back to the farm if we’d “help” unload. The guys riding had to hustle and pay attention! You don’t really see this anymore!
We did it all the time, a thrown load was about 130 bales on our wagons, a stacked load was about 180. Both the baler operator and the stacker had to pay attention to what the plate was set at, to avoid a bale to the head..........

GenerationII the 348 baler has the D beat by 5 years now. The D was built 1923 to 1953. The 348 is 1987 to 2022 and still on the sales sheet for 2023.

I use a John Deere 214w baler and we stack bales on the hayrack behind the baler

To me bale accumulators are the way to go from 8 to 18 bales or a stack of 21
Thats the third best way. The 2nd best is drop singles on the ground and pick them up with a self propelled wagon that picks and stacks automatically. And first best way is to get rid of the idiot cube maker and go large squares or rounds.

Round bales is the cheapest by far. You can bale 2 or 3x faster and collecting, moving, stacking is probably 5x faster.
time is money and only way its "cheap" to make small squares like the video shows is if you have free or dirt cheap labor to stack, ie high school boys working for minimum wage or family kids working for free. I dont have access to cheap/free labor and it would be virtually impossible for me to make idiot cubes.

@@Blackwellll3066 i used to think that until I actually had animals and was puting up hay. if i had to make small squares to feed my small herd i would get rid of my animals because no, its not cheaper. Not only can i make twice as much hay in half the time doing rounds, it also takes less labor to feed in winter There is a reason small squares costs twice as much. The ONLY situation its "cheaper" to use idiot cubes is for those people who have backyard pets, dont have a tractor for moving round bales, and are buying one or two tons a year. Even if i only had one horse i would be using round bales
Our setup was a John deere 2940 with a 328 John Deere baler with a kicker. And gruetts kick bale wagons. We would usually do between 1800 to 2500 baled a day. Good times.

did you know the fly wheel on the 348 has grooves in it for belts to run it off a small engine and be pulled by horses
The grooves are to for belts to run the hydraulic pump for the kicker.
now that i think about it that makes more sense i have seen it done though

Watching bale ejectors makes me happy - rhythmic plonk plonk plonk wheeee! and another bale flies out like a pouncing kitty. This is the first time I've seen this style of bale ejector, the only ones I know are the belt style ones, for instance the New Holland Model 72 Bale thrower. Do you know if there's any major difference between a bale kicker like in the video and a bale thrower using belts, from the farmer's perspective?
My father has run both, an old international with a belt thrower and a deere 336 with the plate, he once told me the plate thrower was better on hillsides, you can level the plate whereas the belts tend to throw them downhill. He also told me the belt throwers have a tendency to burn the strings off if not adjusted properly..........
A friend of mine used to say(about 40 years ago) that the belt type thrower tore at the bales until the belts actually got a hold of the bale. Whereas the pan style thrower(sometimes referred to as a "popper") would not do anything until the bales tripped a lever which would cause the pan to flip the bales into the wagon.

You never mentioned who unloads the 19 LOADS?! Kids today are so lazy...we’ve had to switch to a pole barn and nh 1037 stackliner setup.
Can some bales bust open?
Yes they can. It can be a good indicator that your hay is a little to damp, or you're feeding to much hay in. Sometimes you might have to take pressure off the bale chamber. Straw bales can also pop when they hit the empty wagon deck.
Then can break because of moisture or a tie issues. The ejector pan will flake the bale out on the field. It is rebaled at the end.
