    When a tractor was a tractor and you didn't have to have a degree to to run it. Just my opinion . Thanks B T Power.

    Love the big frame 2wd tractors. I remember years ago seeing a new 4955 Deere and 7140 Case, both 2wd with duals, in the same field. Rare even back then.

    The first new tractor I got was a 4620 set up just like this 4850. Even with max weights it bucked a lot like this one appears to do. When we used a 3pt hitch Brillion ripper (5 tine?) you had to steer with the brakes and it was a pretty FUN ride if you hit a big rock. I was wondering if the weight of the mechanical front wheel drive helped with this? Looking back I wished I had gone with the 7020 but I think it was one and a half times the price(19k vs 12k?) of the 4620, but it had a cab. Ours was one of the ones that came from the factory with the wrong injector pump. With the first pump it was basically a big 4020. After the first day in the field we called the dealer and told them to come get it. They came out swapped pumps and cranked it up a bit and then a bit more. IT was no longer an overgrown 4020. A couple of weeks later the mechanic came out to check on it and we had him turn it down a bit (ate too much fuel). Our neighbor bought the IH equivalent but it could not pull the 28ft double offset disk and it had no chance with the ripper.

      The muffler loose because the youngster may have put a straight pipe on it ... when he put the muffler back on he missed the clamp in his negligence 😃.. im a Ford guy but the 4850 is a good looking machine a near favorite .

    I'm impressed there's not many people left that can straight line like that anymore without the GPS. Of course we have lots of hills were I'm at to eyeballing a straight line is tough because your point of reference disappears for long periods of time.

    Great vid thanks. Got a question for ya, how important is 4x4 in the field? This tractor looks like it’s doing just fine without it. Also did the 4x4 let the farmers get rid of the duals on the rear axle? 👍

    • @markreetz1001
      @markreetz1001 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm gonna say no. BTP has a video dedicated to huge John Deere articulated tractors with triples all the way around. You might think you could get away from duals with fwd, but duals aren't just for traction. They are for floatation resulting in less compaction in the tractor tracks. Some of those tractors can be 60,000 lbs. That can cause some serious hardpan issues and stunt crops. A neighbor had a 7060 Allis with huge tires on the rear (probably 40 years ago). I think he jumped the gun and worked the ground a day early. After it was planted with barley and seeded with alfalfa, strips the width of the tires, set apart by the width of the tractor, spaced the width of the cultivator could be seen in the barley. It was stunted. When the alfalfa crop came in the following spring, you could see those same tracks stunting the alfalfa. The crop was a little shorter and a little less green in those tracks. Stuff happens!

    When I was growing up on the farm in the 1960's utility tractors were 2wd in the 60 to 70 hp class. 100 to 120hp 2wd was the biggest tractors available. Nowadays a 200hp 2wd tractor is just considered a utility tractor! 4wd rules!

    Hi Jason ! Is it spring in that part of US now ? And how come you say pto hp on the row crop tractors and engine hp on the articulated tractors ?

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question. In the 60’s 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s row crop tractors were advertised on power take off. 4wds we’re engine hp as most did not have pto. For example a 4wd with pto would be a 1975 JD 8630 which as 225 eng and 175 pto hp. Around 2008 the high horse power row crops surpassed 300 engine hp and were around 255 pto hp. At that time the term fixed frame tractor came about and they were advertised on eng hp like the 4wds. In the 50’s tractors power were based on how many plow bottoms they pulled. In the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s tractors were based on fly wheel or belt hp.
