1968 C10 Build Episode 4 - LS Engine Camshaft Swap and Dyno

  • When we dragged our rugged ’68 C10 carcass home, there was a big empty where the engine once lived. We had the opportunity to choose anything, so we considered our options carefully. Sure, we could have pulled a rip-snorting big block crate engine off the shelf. Or maybe a nasty, big-inch LS with a blower. But this is a budget build, so we chose the option that we thought would give us the biggest bang for our buck. These days, that means hitting the junkyard and looking for a Gen III or IV Chevy engine in a car or truck that hasn’t already been driven to the moon and back.
    We came up with a 130,000 mile 5.3 out of an ’04 Sierra pickup. When it rolled out of the van, it looked pretty crusty, so we hosed off a decade and a half worth of dirt and oil before popping the pan off to see what we had. In fact, it turned out to be amazingly clean inside, with a good crosshatch still on the cylinder walls. These engines really are amazing.

    I laughed my butt off when he was trying to get the Valve cover bolt to line up. Only because i remember doing the exact same thing a few months ago when i was building my LS.

    Hey guys. I did a swap in my 71 with parts from your shop. I really wanted to do the swap but ran outta time and money. However, next year I may get this done due to the cam you guys installed, it's a nice grind. Great video, I enjoy seeing them as i have the same truck and the parallels are fun. Keep the camera rolling. thanks!

    Great video. Maybe add links to the Cam, valve covers etc to your website so people can go directly to your site to order these parts. Ahmad

    How does the system account for timing w/o knock sensors?
    Also, to stop exh bolts breaking, rat tail file the end holes out toward the ends 5/16". Flat washer on top and torque. Never had one break after that.
    Dollar store oven cleaner works great to clean the block & heads. Cheap!

    I will ask again, but how does the system sense knock if removed! Is this the Holley Terminator X Max system learning or something else?

    • @speedwaymotors
      @speedwaymotors  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Dean! If the knock sensors are gone then you just have to use your ears to detect knock and adjust the timing table accordingly. The Holley will use knock sensors if they are installed and we would recommend leaving them if it's going to be a daily driver or you like to run cheap gas. Thanks!

      @@speedwaymotors I ask only because I have my "LS" built already and use dealer diagnostics, dealer parts and get good results with my sealing methods. Not familiar with Holley low pressure EFI or their system. I have stainless steel lines but get questions all the time about what works. I have the practice. ASE Master since 78, EFI and multiple carb set ups, UTI instructor and delivered 4hr seminars in 7 states for ACDelco, 2 day classes (30 total) in 13 tech colleges, retired.

    Why didn't you guys show how to line up the oil pump housing with feeler gauges or at least mention it!?
    If you skip that step on installation, that's the best way of ruining the pump and then the bearings!

    A short bed C10 from '67-72 curb weight is 3,400 lbs. That's less than a new Corvette. Not sure why you think it's a heavy truck 🙄

    There was no reason to have a valve job done on those heads with that low of miles on them. Total waste of time and money
