The drummer on this particular piece is the legendary Terry Bozzio. It was Terry who famously was the first to play a piece of music written, by Frank Zappa, for drums and melodic percussion instruments called "The Black Page". This piece got its name by the fact that there are so many notations on the page that it appears to be all black. Tony worked on the piece 15 minutes per day for two weeks. For fun, also check out photos of some of the outrageously huge drum kits Terry was famous for playing.

So glad to see another FZ convert. For psychedelic fusion, go early, eg Freak Out (Who Are The Brain Police) or We're Only In It For the Money Läther is arguably Frank's Grand Masterpiece that he fought Warner Brothers over for years But my favorite album You Are What It Is. IMO his greatest album from a production stand point. Especially when listened to by each of the four album sides, where the last song of each side has an extended out-chorus which reprises the previous songs from that particular side. And for absolute mastery from every single musician in his band, The Best Band You Never Heard in Your Life
Check out the triple c.d. called 'shut up n play her guitar'. You'll love it. No vocals. Only guitar solos he's performed live around the globe. Its ear melting. He has so much music it'll take you years to hear it.
Just to clarify, Frank Zappa is a person, not a band. His band's name is "Mothers of Invention." Enjoyed your reaction, and you obviously have good taste if you're seeking to go down the Zappa rabbit hole. Very eclectic musician, and one of the only rock stars I've ever heard use a xylophone in some of his songs. He performed everything from amazing jazz/rock instrumentals to some of the most lyrically bizarre--and hilarious--songs you could imagine. Or experience in your craziest dreams. My suggestion for your next Zappa song is "Dynah Moe Humm." Don't want to provide too many spoilers, but suffice it to say it falls very definitely into the "bizarre and hilarious" category. Heads up, though, it's not exactly "family-friendly" subject matter.
@@marlon-jl4ge Always open to hearing thoughtful and respectful push back on my musings from an articulate, reasoned observer about any given subject, perhaps leading to a debate that can ultimately shed light on the topic at hand and (hopefully) foster a common understanding--or at the very least a deeper, mutual respect for each others' varying opinions. And then there's you.
One of the (many) things Frank was famous for was always having the hottest drummers on the planet in his groups. Auditions to get into the band were said to be frightening--you KNEW you'd better be good!
Well, you got Zapped ! And you're good for 20 years of musical discovery! If you love guitar and drums, try Black Napkins from the Zoot Allures album or Yo' Mama from the Sheik Yerbouti album. Enjoy !
And another Zappa fan is born. Zappa ia my favorite guitarist !! You are is for a real treat Zay!! Check out a song called " Watermelon In Easter hay" next..!!!! ❤🔥❤🔥
Odd starting point for you with Frank. He wrote over 1,400 different pieces of music, by his own count, ranging from rock stuff like this, to blues, to classical, to big band, to electronic, to doo-wop, to just about anything else you can think of. Listen to Watermelon in Easter Hay. Listen to Peaches En Regalia. Listen to Inca Roads. Listen to Bobby Brown (the version on the Sheik Yerbouti (pronounced "shake yer booty")album). Listen to Black Napkins. Listen to Billy The Mountain. Listen to Sofa. Listen to The Black Page. Insanely amazing music. You can get lost in it. Don't forget about King Crimson! I still recommend Fracture, from the album Starless and Bible Black. Have fun!
More? Montana, Inca Roads, Watermelon in Easter Hay, Trouble Every Day, Filthy Habits, Rat Tomago, The Torture Never Stops, Been To Kansas City, the Yellow Snow Suite, the live Evangelical Suite (if you can find it all in one go), the suite of Village Of The Sun/Echidna's Arf/Don't You Ever Wash That Thing (again, not sure if you can find all of them together but they flow really well). I really could keep going. Oh, and because you seem to catch the crazy drumming (NOBODY hired better drummers than Zappa or gave them more to do), Black Page #1 and Black Page #2. There's no such thing as a "typical" Zappa song. If you ever want to listen to an entire album of the most insanely diverse stuff ever, try Them or Us. The pattern goes: Straight 50's Doo-Wop, Blues song about the dangers of getting a BJ in France, speed metal with backward lyrics, a slow ballad with a ripping fast guitar solo, and then a ballet. No kidding, a freaking ballet! That's just the first five songs. After the ballet, the rest of the album includes a country song, a slow piano ballad, a song about getting a BJ from someone who can remove their false teeth, the best Allman Brothers cover I've ever heard, and a song about frogs and how dirty they are. There are over a thousand songs in the Frank Zappa catalog. It's a wild, wild ride.
Zappa is a DEEEEEP subject. Lots of great Zappa to explore. We all had the same reaction the first time hearing Frank. Terry Bozzio is one of the best rock drummers ever.
That Nasty drummer is Terry Bozzio, Franks best drummer with the right set of skills. It was the perfect fit. All the other Zappa drummers were good, but this drummer was the best he ever hired, and helped catapult Frank into his finest era, mid 75 - mid 78.
Listen to the group “Missing Persons”, Terry was the drummer and it’s extremely impressive. Or watch the video on TH-cam titled “Missing Persons at the 1983 Us Festival” to see him in action.
I dunno. I think Vinnie was slightly better for Frank's best stuff. Not taking anything away from how awesome Terry was (and is), but Vinnie was the guy who Frank swore could read his actual mind for rhythm changes. I don't think the Shut Up / Guitar albums would have been as good with Terry.
@@billmilligan7272 The Terry/frank duo guitar series, never officially released, BEFORE shut up, were BETTER!!! IN fact ship ahoy is my favorite song on the album, and thats with terry. The solos from Baby snakes are better than shut up. Frank used a les paul with smothering pickups with vinnie, to blend in with vinnies sloppy polyrhythms. With Terry, he used the straight up SG, which worked like crap with vinnies poly rhythms. Vinnie wasn't worth keeping after a short tenure, Frank didn't pay him enough, so how well did he really read franks mind, That is total conjecture.
"Inca Roads", "Willie The Pimp", "Cosmic Debris", "Uncle Remus", "Watermelon in Easter Hay." Pick one, or do them all, you probably will eventually. Have fun!
Now listen to some Steve Vai, he was hired by Zappa as his transcriptionist before then joining the band. You can hear Zappas influence in a lot of Vais work.

WoW! you're brave for venturing in the world of Frank Zappa.
So glad to see another FZ convert.
For psychedelic fusion, go early, eg Freak Out (Who Are The Brain Police) or We're Only In It For the Money
Läther is arguably Frank's Grand Masterpiece that he fought Warner Brothers over for years
But my favorite album You Are What It Is. IMO his greatest album from a production stand point. Especially when listened to by each of the four album sides, where the last song of each side has an extended out-chorus which reprises the previous songs from that particular side.
And for absolute mastery from every single musician in his band, The Best Band You Never Heard in Your Life
Album cover, Frank Zappa on the left and Cpt. Beefheart on the right
I really really recommend the Yellow Snow suite - it's an incredible experience and feat
Lou reed comes to mind in the beginning of the first song on the first album by the velvet underground, and rush has some, but other than that…
Zappa was garbage
@@marlon-jl4ge Always open to hearing thoughtful and respectful push back on my musings from an articulate, reasoned observer about any given subject, perhaps leading to a debate that can ultimately shed light on the topic at hand and (hopefully) foster a common understanding--or at the very least a deeper, mutual respect for each others' varying opinions. And then there's you.
With shit zappa trolls, its like with mushrooms, keep them in the dark and feed them shit, hahahaha 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣
Shit zappa was an ugly boring clown and his music too
Stevie's SPANKING is a must ZAPPA too,
HE DUALS GUITARS WITH THE LEGENDARY STEVIE VIA!!!!!
Terry Bozzio plays on most of Jeff Beck's albums. You should check out Jeff Beck. "Air Blower" "Constipated Duck" "Blue Wind"
I never quite understood Frank Zappa but I respect his amazing abilities.
I am pretty sure that was what he was aiming for!
Zappa was garbage
This one will be interesting. Let's just say that Frank Zappa is an acquired taste.
Frank Zappa was a character. He named his children Dweezil, Moon Unit, Ahmet, and Diva.
If you remember in your reaction to smoke in the water by deep purple they referred to Frank Zappa and the mothers they had the best place around
This entire LP “Bongo Fury” is perfect start to finish.
Vinnie wasn't worth keeping after a short tenure, Frank didn't pay him enough, so how well did he really read franks mind, That is total conjecture.
please, the title song on joes garage its so mutch of an essense of the greatness( hela kostcirkeln in Swedish)
Heard Zappa when I was 12... took a liking to it.So weird, heavy, jazzy. Check out Joe's garage amongst his other works.Valley Girl is funny too.
Try Peaches in Regalia!!
"Inca Roads", "Willie The Pimp", "Cosmic Debris", "Uncle Remus", "Watermelon in Easter Hay." Pick one, or do them all, you probably will eventually. Have fun!
I want more as well.
IM STOKED, I CANT WAIT TILL 600!!!
Go for The Illinois Enema Bandit
next!
Now listen to some Steve Vai, he was hired by Zappa as his transcriptionist before then joining the band. You can hear Zappas influence in a lot of Vais work.
So, if you dare. Zappa had, I think, 70 lps or so before he left us.
LOL, love the "more, now"!!
❤️❤️
Frank is a band, a man and a group! Man, you ain't heard nothin' yet!!!
That's FZ on guitar. He was a monster .
Hey Zay, next Zappa song reaction should be Inca Roads. You'll love it.
It's a way of life.
Inca Bullshit
Without shit ugly zappa, the music World would be much better
Sorry I missed the live Dude, Next one I'll be there..... I'll be waiting for the next one.
Who else thinks Frank has the same tone dialed in and plays just like Jimi Hendrix?
Now try Zappa’s St. Alphonso’s pancake breakfast, and the instrumental Black Napkins….you’ll love em!
and it's live recording too. wowie zowie
FRANK used to close his shows with this song or WHIPPING POST!!!!!

Track 10 on CD2 from "The Best Band You Never Heard in Your Life" will give you pure bliss.
Kinda brings me to tears to see a youngster get it, Frank sits on the right hand of God.
The best trained musicians love to play Zappa's music. Tells you something.
its probably known by now but frank wasnt a fan of pre written solos so everything is improvised everything except the riff the lyrics and the chord changes everything else is mostly improvised
Three words say it all .. Billy the Mountain .. it will amaze you
Dude check out the entire “Apostrophe” album- one of his best
Frank Zappa is the leader of the band. He's who they paid to see.
Frank Zappa provides music for people with a taste for the bizarre.
