Yes, Zappa on guitar. You've got to realize one thing about Zappa, there were no rules. You could expect him to do anything at any time. He played in literally every genre. The guy wrote for band and orchestra, jazz fusion, rock, pop, funk, punk, orchestral, musique concrete, you name it. Master of satire, lyrical insanity, and beyond. Start with Black Napkins, Regyptian Strut, and Peaches en Regalia. Then start with stuff off Apostrophe and Overnight Sensation to warm up to the vocal tracks. By then you’ll be all in for Zappa’s genius.
You guys definitely gotta do more Frank Zappa! Apostrophe is a must (album is bomb). His live performances are also some of the most entertaining you’ll ever see

Zappa is number two on my list of all-time favorite bands. From what I can tell this is your first listen to him. I'm glad you got to hear some of his stuff. I have so many suggestions about what to do next but it's tricky with Frank because a lot of it might be off-putting to most listeners. I guess my best advice would be to start with the album that I started with. Roxy and elsewhere. The songs on that album come in chunks of three so, you could do one of the three song chunks (songs 1-3, 4-6, or 7-9), or you could just do one.........Village of the sun I guess. For no other reason that to blow yer face off when the song actually kicks in. Yeah George Duke was part of the band for a while. Y'all gotta see Inca Roads with George Duke. There's also a live video of Muffin Man from the film Baby Snakes. And BTW, no drugs. Zappa didn't indulge and insisted the same from everyone in his band. He took his job very seriously, working nonstop as a professional from the early 60s until finally calling it quits in the late 80s, releasing something like 60 albums as well as working in film, video, and as a producer for other artists. Probably thousands of concerts. He took on Congress in opposition to censorship and record labeling. Zappa was always recruiting new talent in his bands, often finding exceptional musicians playing in average bands and offering them a job, such as drummer Terry Bozzio featured here (later founding member of Missing Persons), and Adrian Belew (who moved on to King Crimson, David Bowie, and performed as a solo artist.) Zappa. A true legend.
Great reaction, guys! Welcome to the genius world of Frank Zappa. He and all of the band members are top-notch musicians. This rabbit hole is Deeeep! Enjoy the ride :)
Frank was famously Anti-Drug. If you were in his band and got caught using drugs you had two choices, window or aisle seat for your ticket home. Frank is the guitar player, and composer.
Very much enjoyed your reaction guys! I’ve been a Frank Zappa fan since 1971, when I first heard him, back in Germany. You gotta listen to, or watch the live “Inca Roads” performance of The Mothers, with George Duke on the KEYBOARDS. I promise, you won’t regret. Take care, Michael!
You guys need to dive down the HUGE Frank Zappa hole. He was a very interesting & influential industry giant with a prolific catelog. He was all about playful, profane, diverse and innovative compositions with totally complex rhythmic components. He was also a brilliant composer whose bands were technically excellent.
So many great musicians went through ZAPPAS BAND it was incredible...FRANK ONE OF THE GOATS ON GUITAR. Terry Bozzio on drums one of the greats...also ZAPPAS BAND doing the WIPPING POST is classic...LIVE! 1984
A musical genius Not only a guitarist but the composer of all the instruments And no frank didn't drink or do any drugs This is the deepest of the deep rabbit holes He literally has thousands of songs
The drummer on this (Terry Bozzio) is the best drummer I've ever seen, by far. He's just frighteningly good. And Zappa didn't do drugs, by the way. A lot of people assumed he did because of the way he looked, but tobacco was his only vice. Edit: Oh, and make sure to hear "Inca Roads" - it grooves HARD.
It’s all subjective. It’s one of my favorites. Great band, great song, great solo and great recording. I like it a lot more than the video from the Palladium (I was there for 3 shows) that seems to be more popular.
Great reaction; Zappa was a musician’s musician, and he only played with the best in his band. Too many albums (60+), whole albums best, but easier way in is ‘Yellow Snow Suite’ on ‘Apostrophe’, or ‘Inca Roads’ on ‘One Size Firs All’ (side 2 of which is sublime).
- For quintessential Zappa finesse: "Peaches en Regalia" (instrumental). - More ripping/groove: "Willie The Pimp". - Be "forewarned", Zappa has a WIDE range of creative/musical offerings! Enjoy
My favorite version, I was fortunate to see FZ one time, he was closing his shows with “ Whippin Post”, Allman brothers classic, now my favorite version is Franks.
Finally… you may not realize it but today you guys have reacted to two of the most underrated guitarists of all time; Frank Zappa and Terry Kath. Terry unfortunately didn’t live in the spotlight long enough to be fully appreciated and Frank’s lyrics and complicated compositions kept many from listening to a lot of his work. Both were absolutely amazing at their craft. Frank was a musical magician!
I got to see him live. His shows were great bits of musical wizardry. ZAppa was one of the greatest guitarists that ever lived. Muffin Man was often done as an encore.
I love seeing your reactions to Frank Zappa. He is the most underrated guitarist ever and a musical genius. Unfortunately you won’t be able to see him in concert. FZ died in 1993, sadly.
This track has Frank on lead guitar. He has had Adrian Belew, Steve Vai , Matt Guitar Murphy and other greats. Frank was phenomenal playing lead as well. Great tune
Frank tried on every night to play a different solo and a different style for each song and as he used to say, when he was out there he was out there alone... Just him challenging himself and the universe. His solos make sense from start to finish, he is one of the greatest improvisational composers of the modern era.
The brotha's at it again!! Frank Zappa and the Mother's drummer, Terry Bozio guitar center drum off 2011 has the largest drum set known to mankind, and totally shreds it, check it out!!
oh my, one of the all time great composers in the history of music ....62 albums to his credit with his band ...the mothers of invention ...a few song sugestions you would enjoy reviewing....Peaches En Regalia, Joes Garage, Moving To Montana , Cosmic Debris , I'm the Slime , Disco Boy, San Bernardino , Fine Girl , Lets Make The Water Turn Black..... and so many more
Please keep the Zappa coming! The breadth and scope of his music is unparalleled. "Inca Roads" would probably be a good direction to go after The Muffin Man.
Great reaction! Love to see musicians listening to Zappa for the first time. And yes, you need to see a live performance. I suggest Inca Roads from The Dub Room Special. Or Florentine Pogen.
Muffin Man is great intro to one type of Zappa music: killer guitar and weird lyrics. Zappa was a lot of things, including a guitarist. He did 3 albums of only live guitar solos, called Shut Up and Play Your Guitar and similar. But at the top of the list of his talents is probably a composer. So his solos could be lots of things too, bluesy, rock, avant garde, depending on his mood because he could work in all types of music. His music could be modern "classical", fusion (like Hot Rats, Waka-Jawaka, Grand Wazoo albums), rock, avant garde, doo wop, and full of weird or high school dirty minded lyrics. Hard to describe. "Strictly Commercial" tunes to check out are Dirty Love, Cosmik Debris, Montana, I'm the Slime for starters.
I like that you listened to the studio version first, but check it out in tge live version too, it here on YT, and all done without drugs, just black pages! Zappa Lives!

He was an ugly boring asshole and his music too
- For quintessential Zappa finesse: "Peaches en Regalia" (instrumental).
Try Inca Roads fellas..BTW, I love your channel.
George Duke lead vocals- inca Roads
This song takes me back to 1976 when I listened to this with my friends. Thanks a lot for this reaction!
I never forget when I saw Baby Snakes...is like a trip with no drugs!
Zappa was filth
@@marlon-jl4ge Thank you for confirming one of my points!
@@k1jsfit and his music too 🤣
Shit ugly zappa changed the music World of boring assholes 🤣
Welcome to the Zappa rabbit hole, probably the best composer of the 20th century and with over 100 albums you'll be stuck for life. Enjoy.
They were killing that jam...sick guitar tone
He liked to mike a pignose (small practice amp) to get that sound
@@dereklloyd381 nice to know
I love coming back to this watching you guys discover Frank…. I’m always fixed on the drum fills…
I was lucky to see Frank twice live.
Always a great show by the best musicians.
The list of those who went through Franks band is legendary
This track has Frank on lead guitar. He has had Adrian Belew, Steve Vai , Matt Guitar Murphy and other greats. Frank was phenomenal playing lead as well. Great tune
We wore this cassette out in High school, Great reaction.
Frank Zappa on guitar, Terry Bozzio on drums. This one is among my favorites. Too late to see him live, RIP
FRANK ZAPPA IS A MUSICAL GENIUS
My dad played with Zappa from ‘76-‘84. He was guitar and vocals. Ray White is his name.
We will check your dad out.
Much respect to the great Ray White.
Great reaction to this monster track. The deeper you dig into ZAPPA, the harder you fall.
Zappa is one of greatest guitar players of all time.
Frank Zappa was a genius. He sure could play that guitar also.
Genius of boring assholes
oh my, one of the all time great composers in the history of music ....62 albums to his credit with his band ...the mothers of invention ...a few song sugestions you would enjoy reviewing....Peaches En Regalia, Joes Garage, Moving To Montana , Cosmic Debris , I'm the Slime , Disco Boy, San Bernardino , Fine Girl , Lets Make The Water Turn Black..... and so many more
Please keep the Zappa coming! The breadth and scope of his music is unparalleled. "Inca Roads" would probably be a good direction to go after The Muffin Man.
One of my absolute favorite Zappa guitar solos.
Yes, that was the late, great Frank Zappa on lead guitar (solos) and vocals and the INCREDIBLE Terry Bozzio (pronounced Bow- zee- o) on drums!
Great reaction! Love to see musicians listening to Zappa for the first time. And yes, you need to see a live performance. I suggest Inca Roads from The Dub Room Special. Or Florentine Pogen.
Frank Zappa is the most important musician that paved the way for all music today.
"Andy" is another great Zappa track- with vocals by "Johhny Guitar Watson"
I like that you listened to the studio version first, but check it out in tge live version too, it here on YT, and all done without drugs, just black pages!
Zappa Lives!
