In case you didnt know, Frank was a drummer when he started out. As you can probably tell, he places very high importance on drums & percussion. All his drummers were highly accomplished and amongst the best around.

One of the first songs that introduced Terry Bozzio to the world... Unlike any other drummer for Zappa, Bozzio made his guitar real mean and rockin'... Zappa always used close mic'd live performances for "studio" recordings...

20 years after this recording, I had a bunch of cassettes in my car as I was driving my kids to visit their cousins on a 100-mile journey like once a month. They still talk about the Muffin Man, all these years later.

Frank was in his own category. No one could do what Frank could do. That guitar solo was completely spontaneous for that show, unbelievable. I'm lucky to have seen him live five times.

I am an old Zappa fan , was a teen in the 70’s bought this album then… 2 notes you talked over…Live! “Good Night Austin Texas, wherever you are”! Recorded at the world famous Armadillo World Headquarters in South Austin Texas the epitome of the 70’ Cowboy/Hippie scene in Austin. Birthplace of outlaw country! Other note you talked over some key lyrics - this song was written from one of Beefheart’s poems. (Side fact… The Cover Shot of Bongo Fury of Frank and Captain Beefheart , was taken at Sandy’s Burgers on Riverside in South Austin- an establishment THAT IS STILL THERE to this day! )

A lot of Frank's solos have a certain distinct sound (tonal quality) that he achieved by using a wah-wah pedal. But instead of using the wah effect by rocking the pedal up and down, he kept the pedal in the half-depressed position/setting, which gave the guitar a particular trebly sound that you couldn't get in any other way (at the time, anyway).

Frank's bands were so well rehearsed you can't believe it. He was also the first musician to use a Midi board on stage . At a certain point in the show he'd put down his guitar and pick up a conductors wand and conduct his band!

This solo is one of the most unconvered, underappreciated works of all time. Reviewers and TH-camrs all focus on that half-effort live performance from 77, when this is the real gem. Glad to find another appreciative fan. Have a like and a sub.

    • @carlandersson7870
      @carlandersson7870 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Hm I like both versions, they're so different though, can't decide which one I like more. I heard the 77 one first so solo wise I'm leaning toward that one, the guitar sounds so much sharper and intensive, not to mention the whole song sounds so much fuller with that FAT rhythm section, really does pack a punch compared to this one. Idk half effort sounds weird to me. But in this cleaner version I love the emphasis on the drums which really add to the vibe, then there's the whole intro ofc, which I don't really care for music wise but I've grown to love it as well, especially for the breaking of character/laugh, it's so endearing and such a great summarization of these guys' philosophy, like "don't take yourself so seriously and just have fun", and I fucking love it.

My favorite Halloween ever was seeing Todd Rundgren and Utopia in New Jersey, can't remember the venue, then jumping across the GW Bridge to get to the Zappa show! I don't know that I ever saw so much talent in one night.

Yeah. The first Halloween show was Chicago in 1973, as released on the Halloween '73 set. Beginning in 1974, every year except '79 because he only toured in Europe that year, as well as 1982.
We need an official release of Halloween '80 as well as '84.
If the '88 tour didn't implode, it was scheduled to come back to the states and could possibly have made the Halloween set.

Frank invited Beefheart on one tour; the results are heard on the "Bongo Fury" album where this cut came from. While Frank had respect for Beefheart, the tour was a frustrating one for Zappa. Frank was used to extremely high skilled musicians who could/would do what he wanted. Beefheart was a loose cannon. He didn't have much too do on this particular cut but there's a few other short cuts on the album that showcase Beefheart's lyrics and vocal style with the band backing him.

@@L33Reacts Hopefully I remember this correctly from my readings but Zappa said that Beefheart couldn't remember any lyrics so he had stacks of misc. papers that he would bring on stage with him. And then if he got bored during a show he'd sit on stage and write more poetry. Hilarious.

This is more of a fun song than a masterpiece. I participated in one of those "worldwide clip" videos where everybody plays some of the music and then an engineer pieces them together. I had a blast doing it. At the start, I play a villain trying to make muffins. Since I had recently had a cow butchered, I had a beef heart in the freezer. I was going to make cream cheese muffins but the box was empty, so I decided to make beef heart muffins.
Anyway, after the introduction, all the other worldwide musicians started and it ended up being a fun project. I also play the guitar using a voice box just to make it different. If you watch it, I hope you enjoy it. Greg

what amazes me is FZ playing such an emotional solo, burning right out of the box, like such outrage or whatever... on such a stupid song.
I saw Sting talk about the difference between a jazzer's approach to a solo where you build it and take some time, as opposed to rock where you have to burn from the first note. Frank is the exemplar for coming out immediately on fire. as is the band, like they're going to snap if they don't get to it from the first note.

If you're into Franks' oddities, you should try "Wild Man Fischer", a local street person. It's a double album, and it has the best Zappa instrumental, five minutes, sounding kind of underwater, like some Jimi Hendrix.
