      This show was way better than Cadets' Appalachian Spring, SCV should have taken the title for '87.

      @@garrett69 I loved Cadets' Appalachian Spring. It was a great show. It was clean. The drill was beautiful. However, this SCV show's GE was far, far beyond Cadets'. So, I 100% agree that SCV should have taken it this year. Having said that, the '89 Phantom show deserved to beat out SCV's Phantom . . . at least it did on Finals Night. Isn't opinion fun?

      It’s the beauty of subjectivity. SCV could not March and the .1 is funny. They were so good, but the rules are the rules and it was a crazy night.

    This is the standard of talent and power that is lacking today. Everyone who had anything to do with the production of this masterpiece. Is an ICON. They still cast a shadow on today’s DCI. I was a freshman at Wilcox high school. This Corp was god to me.

    My first junior drum crops show was at West Chester College in August 1987. The crowd included 3000 band students attending a band camp at the college and the Philadelphia Eagles were also there at the same time for training camp. My point of reference at that time were the senior corps and I was very skeptical about what these kids could do... The show was great and then.... SCV came onto the field.. The opening from the contra line felt like a freight train running over our heads and into the stands like a giant wave, in unison every member of the audience rose as one ..... Something special was about to happen and by the time the brass line made the snap turn, and moved towards the stand the kids behind me were screaming and crying .... the music in front and the screaming behind was just deafening,,,,, by the end of the show I was in tears, and shaking from emotion... At that moment, I knew it was over, I was hooked on DCI... 30 years since and seeing over a hundred shows, no performance has ever come as close to this from an emotional impact that it had on me. To this day, that show is the greatest show I have ever seen or heard,,, seeing this again still gives me goosebumps... All I can say is that you had to be there to know it...

      What I loved about the old school hornlines is you felt the music as much as you heard it. Those G bugles punched you in the chest when those kids took it to FFF......

      steven marcalus My God your post gave me CHILLS! I started watching DCI in 1987 and it has remained an obsession! I'm just disappointed in the current direction. I'm fine with the evolution in drill, but my God the music IMHO (save for a few corps numbers here and there) has suffered greatly. It becomes glaringly obvious when you look back on these older performances! Thanks for your post!

      I had a very similar experience in Denver. For some reason I can’t remember (must have been weather), the competition in Utah where I live was canceled that year and I didn’t get to see this show so I decided to drive to Denver. A few years before in my high school marching band, we had played Russian Christmas Music and Great Gate of Kiev in separate shows so I really wanted to see SCV do it. Like you, when those first low contra notes sounded, the hairs raised all over my body and my right knee started to shake and , like you, by the end I had tears running down my face. So glad I drove the 500 miles to Denver. I’ll never forget it. Still my favorite show of all time.....and like you, it still gives me goosebumps every time I watch it.

    To me, this is the quintessential SCV moment of the '80s. Having marched Cavies in the '80s and '90s, we, of course, point to moments that say, "that's all Cavalier, there." If I marched SCV, though, this would be one of those moments for me. It's one of my favorite openers of any corps in any decade. Great job!

    1987 was one of my favorite years for drum corps. Between this show and Garfield/Bergenfield/Allentown/Bergen County/Hackensack or where the hell ever they will be from next year, I looked forward to every performance. Fans nearly got into fistfights in 1987 over who had the better show, SCV or Cadets, both were fantastic performances.

    After all these years I just realized that the sopranos' move up front-- in opposite directions away from the 50 that begins at 0:39, and has them going into the curvilinear form hooking up with the contras--- is a dead on duplicate of the opening move SCV did during the first 32 counts of Fanfare & Allegro in 1984, just moved closer to the front sideline. I marched that show and many of my former '84 colleagues I had the honor of marching with aged out in '87, and it's neat to see their faces in this clip.

    Then, at some point in the future, somebody said:
    "Hey, that percussion is way too colorful and sparkly and interesting. Let's just have a bunch of marimbas playing the same thing." And so they did.
    Then somebody noticed the thrilling, warm, powerful low brass, and said,
    "Hmm. Gotta get rid of that, or at least cover it up with something cheap, easy, and annoying."
    This was harder to do! But a switch to nasal-sounding indoor instruments, and a quick trip to Guitar Center for an amp and a Casio keyboard did the trick.
    And at last, all was new and lame. Praise be.

    Ah, @1:11, the unmistakable snarl of a contrabass bugle. It is odd how our perceptions of acceptable tone quality alter with the instrument. Yes, the sound is definitely out of control, and if it had been one of my contrabass players, I probably would've gone up one side of them and down the other after the show. On the other hand, if it was a bass trombone player making that sound, we would all be worshipping at their feet! I would be lying if I said I didn't miss hearing that sound every now and then...

      The Garfield performance on that night, far surpassed competition, recognition of other corps. All that existed that night during that performance, was us all together as one. You could feel each and every member on the field. It's one of those rare special moments and it elevates you way past the reality of a judged competition to the beauty and freedom to just perform, fuck the numbers. That was a great drum corps performance by SCV, but an amaaaaazing performance by Garfield that night. The spread should've been more.

    This is good and all, but WHY are their pants so short?

  • @crwnguy

    Great corps and great show..BUT..why for the love of god is there always a guy in these old school SCV videos who is wearing pants two sizes too big and about 4 inches too short?
    While this is great history, I accept that time marches on. I enjoy what the corps of today are doing just as much.

      Marcus Jones that same individual with the "shorter" pants who does the
      Left Flank from Hell is John C who marched SCV euphonium from 83-87; he is a super guy and to this day even ribs himself about the pant length. A lot of the guys I marched with in 84 & 85 aged out in this show and it's great to see so many of my friends be a part of this historical performance.

      You never know during what uniform problems can happen...could be someone had a growing spurt....someone was replaced during tour....I know it can be a distraction...but, the show must go on....I lost my shoes on tour and had to use black socks to cover tennies....it was a temporary fix, but it worked

    It looks like the snare drummer on the end doesn’t have his hat on. Does anyone know the story behind that? Or am I mistaken?

      Yes. Joe somehow lost his hat at the warmup. The general consensus is that someone probably stole it. But no one noticed, except when you see this video, and he was such a chill guy it didn’t phase him one bit.

      If you look closely, you will see the words City appearing before 88. The 88 finals were in Kansas City so I imagine that complete sign was advertising next year's DCI finals.

      No sir. Cadets Appalachia Spring was also an all-time classic and deserved to win. Losing by a tenth of one point, both Vanguard and Cadets were a worthy champion.

    And that's why you're in 2nd place.

    • @johns3106
      @johns3106 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Dave Martinez As someone who started marching when the tic system was still in place, little details like that still make me cringe!

    • @ExBuickRacer
      @ExBuickRacer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I also started during the tic era. A friend of mine who marched this show still has his hat and the linings inside them were slippery nylon. It also looks too big on her so maybe it was a last minute replacement or she lost a hair clip (I marched with her in a prior year and she always wore her long hair up during shows.) The comment that "and that's why you're in 2nd place" is utter nonsense.

    • @Marshagarsha
      @Marshagarsha 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      “And that’s why you’re in 2nd place.” 😂😂😂 This was 1987, not 1977. The reason we came in 2nd is because Garfield was better, not because Serena adjusted her hat.

    • @ExBuickRacer
      @ExBuickRacer 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're referring to the "flat bells" at the very beginning I believe that was a "call to prayer" used in Russian Orthodoxy. SCV's director of the time was all about historical accuracy and wrote most of SCV's arrangements which were tweaked as the season went on.

    • @Mrtellitlikeitis
      @Mrtellitlikeitis 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Whatever. It ruins the recording

    • @Marshagarsha
      @Marshagarsha 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m the one playing them. They represented church bells. How do they ruin it when they’re literally solo? I think you’re talking about the scale runs at the end of the piece. That was a micing issue, I presume. How else do a couple of bell players overplay THAT horn line? :)

    WHOLE NOTE (Overblow); WHOLE NOTE (Blast); WHOLE NOTE (Tone quality out the window); WHOLE NOTE (PITCH!); WHOLE NOTE (Ensemble tear); WHOLE NOTE (Drum Major throws his hat and looks at the audience thinking, "No. We aren't going to lose by 0.1.")
    :::Cut to "...Kiev": WHOLE NOTE (Out of tune); WHOLE NOTE (missed the note entirely); WHOLE NOTE (Really. It would be louder if it were in tune).
    :::Cut to, "In 2nd place, with a score of 97.8: Santa Clara Vanguard!"

  • @ImVee10
    @ImVee10 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The fact that Garfield had to beat them by 0.8 in the 3 drum captions to win by 0.1 still stymies me. This overblown, underwritten slob of a show is the most overrated old-school mess in DCI history -- with Phantom '08 right behind. Ugh.

      Vee 10 Some of the comments are HILARIOUS. I guarantee, 99% of the people making negative comments about SC or the Cadets A) didn’t see any of the top 12 shows live in 87. If ya did see it live, that’s because your corps went on when it was still light out. SC was still at the housing site when y’all were changing after your “finals” show and B) have never marched a Corps that was even in contention much less in the running for one of the best shows of all time. Cadets were insane! So was phantom, Cavs, Suncoast, Madison any top 12 Corps crushes and for you to take swipes from the couch 30+ years later reveals more about you character and integrity than anything. Life got you down? You’ll get through it. I believe in you. Maybe even more than you believe in yourself. BTW, if you didn’t march Cadets ‘87, no one cares what you have to say. If you did March Cadets 87 you’d keep spit cave shut.
