I was there that night. When they started playing the first note of Simple Gifts, It was a standing ovation until everybody was off the field. What a great performance.
I played 3/4 movements of Simple Gifts for ISSMA concert band, and I loved every second of it, I played both Euphonium solos (although one was turned into a duet) I also got to play them in graduation band, I loved every second of it.
It's been over ten years and that company front still cuts the onions every single time. Few things are more powerful than a DCI E-Flat Major power chord.
I was at a SCV camp this weekend and we played this but just watching them hit that company front I just burst into tears. Incredible drill writing with the music.
I was on that very field for BOA--my last time on a field as a senior, less than a year before this. Couple of us got back together to see DCI in 2009 to bear witness to one of the greatest moments in its history. This closer ended an era for me like nothing else could have. I'll never forget the feeling that the wall of sound that hit me brought with it the future itself. Still gives me chills to this day. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY was sitting down.
I was on the field, on the 50 yard line, when I saw SCV first do this in an exhibition performance in 1982. It was my first time seeing a drum corps, the whole show left me awestruck, and Simple Gifts became embedded in my heart. In 2012 I held my six year old daughter on my lap for her first drum corps show, and when this was played, I bawled. Life was perfect in that moment.
If DCI were the Staples Center, a statue of the trumpet player would be one of those out front. Iconic. We (Academy) did a lot of the same early shows with SCV the beginning of 09 and I was absolutely floored when I heard Simple Gifts for the first time.
John Johnson you do understand that the difference in audio quality between videos and actually being there makes Blue Devils sound like an all age corps some times. Videos can expose those small details that in person no fan can hear.
@Andy i feel you on this. someone on the left end of the company front (baritone?) is being a 'hero' and the breaths are painfully obvious. this whole section is still a tear jerker for me tho
The use of the Maestoso on the company front was sheer genius. The crowd reaction says it all. Goose bumps and tears when I saw it live and whenever I watch this clip. This IS the definitive version. Once again - SCV got it right.
I was there all week quarters, semis and finals. No one was going to beat the Blue Devils. I was actually there supporting Crown because one of my former students was in that group. No one has ever beaten the effectiveness of this stately closer but the exit was even better with the unfurling then merging of the S symbols. This had to be one of the most effective drills to music I have ever seen. It was an amazing ending for a 5th place group.
SCV. Simple gifts, it's a GIFT that you got to have this song in your program. Great job SCV. Go Santa Clara Vanguard!!! Keep going strong and do more amazing shows!!!
Just fantastic! When I saw this live at Finals I was Blown Away! The ending of this show is definitely a tip-of-the-cap to Zingali and the Garfield Cadets of 1987, with a touch of Blast! style body movement thrown in. And yet it is uniquely Santa Clara. That is what I love about the activity. Take great ideas and make them work for you in your own way. What Zingali and Jim Prime did for Garfield's 87 production (one of the best of its' era) was maybe a small impetus for the staff of SCV to create their own version. This is why I can watch 2009 SCV and 1987 Garfield and see two totally different shows that are both amazing, yet also see some connections.
Every single ballet for Martha show I've ever seen is absolutely amazing. Especially this, BAC 2002, and Garfield 1987. The melody is just so heartwarming and has a very reassuring sound to it.
The corps i marched Revolution DBC used this song as our corps song. This was my age out year, i was in the stands balling my eyes out when they played this that night.
THE most amazing DCI moment, if not THE most amazing moment of my life was when I experienced this show in Central California, Clovis/Buchanan High School to be exact.
This reminds me of my senior year in high school. We did a Wizard of Oz theme. The final push was the forward push like this with Somewhere Over the Rainbow. We had an Emerald Castle as a back drop and balloons were released filling the sky.
the cadets are doing the same theme at the end of their show this year. I'm not sure that it will be able to compete with what SCV did in 2009, but I love their show!!
Kevin Thomas cadets actually originally did this first but they did the full Appalachian Spring back in the 80s and my dad and I are always fighting over who did it best.
Santa Clara actually did Appalachian Spring for their first time in 1976. They have done it also in 1977, 1982, 1983, 2009 and was the closing feature of the first movement for the 2017 SCV Alumni Corps.
Wow, no voiceovers. Who’d a thunk something could be this powerful WITHOUT a voiceover to explain it to me? Huh, I guess show designers can do it after all.
What I would give to be that one trumpet player on the 50 yard line during the company front with the whole world watching from the front and the full power of god himself behind me. I would give anything to be him for those short 10 seconds.
I marched in a small texas corps named Revolution Drum and Bugle corps and simple gifts was our corps song. we sang it after everyshow, and i even have it tattooed on my chest. I was there this night on Semis for the age out ceremony and was balling my eyes out during this part . lol
From 1:30 and on, always wondered if those soft chords in the back ground were synthesizers , but then I think the brass is just playing turned away from the cameras.
If there is a person out there who doesn't burst into tears at a good Simple Gifts company front, they need to be yeeted off the planet. We don't need that kind of negativity here.
I don’t even know what SCV is anymore. Yeah they might be good, but I don’t like the direction they’re heading. The beautiful and elegant SCV will always be the true and best SCV.
Nah... That playout and exit to the back... When the Mellos hit that note and hold..., Cymbals come rushing in, Layout the platform and raise her in that gorgeous outfit and they clap! .. Incredibly artistic ending... I love the big ending, but this adds that SCV touch
About a year late here, but I think I know why. It sounds like mic placement. You can hear that one mello taking breaths while the note is being held. The mic is probably really close to that one mello. I could be wrong, but that's my best guess.
Because your brain hears the crowd roar and finally starts to turn back on, and you remember it’s probably the last time you’ll ever have that horn on your face in that setting ever again. So you just let it rip for all you’re worth, and mellos just have the little special sizzle when you pump them full of air.
We used to say that same thing about the 27th Lancers of the 80's. They had a traditional 27th company front in every show and they turned it and it was a real crowd pleaser.
Our season is finished and it was great! Pretty funny actually, it was a similar arrangement but at the end there was a 35 second long variation with the trombones glissing into power chords at ffff, it was really great and i’m totally gonna be back next spring
I was there that night. When they started playing the first note of Simple Gifts, It was a standing ovation until everybody was off the field. What a great performance.
I would kill to have been there for this closer holy crap
I saw them at Drums Along the Rockies in Denver that year. Probably the best show of the night!
Your statement is not consistent with the video evidence.
Everyone is seated until the company front at 0:38.
same, Drum corps is the best.

Hands down, one of the best DCI moments in history.
This and Bluecoats 2011 with Creep are my two favorites
It's been over ten years and that company front still cuts the onions every single time. Few things are more powerful than a DCI E-Flat Major power chord.
Jacob Grigg oh time be that trumpet player on the 50 yard line.
I only get to listen and it definitely cuts the onions for me,too.
A company front to Simple Gifts gets dust in my eyes and causes them to water uncontrollably. And oh to be that trumpet player on the 50 yard line
Dude that would literally be an honor to stand there. It made me cry too 😭
I was at a SCV camp this weekend and we played this but just watching them hit that company front I just burst into tears. Incredible drill writing with the music.
+Andrew wilson I was at the SoCal camp this past weekend too dude. I loved playing this in the horn arc. Literally almost burst into tears.
My school played this song and did that walk to the front
SCV: always in a class of their own. I remember them playing Simple Gifts in the mid-70’s and it still gives me chills.
Best closer in drum corps. Ever.
I LOVE this one but sorry- Spartacus. Lol
This, 1989, and Bluecoats TILT

@John Johnson 😂
@John Johnson please, can we just respect these people who put so much time and effort into this and not go criticizing them? That is up to the judges
@John Johnson I did not mean to make you think that, and I respect every member that attends drum corps
