Classiest and probably the most influential on the average HS band kid show in all of DCI history.

What a show indeed! Still gives me chills.
I have to expand on this, it’s brought back so many memories of those days of DC tours and the blood sweat and tears that go into it.
I remember watching this show in Ogdensburg, NY in 89. We had already seen 88s edition from DCI championships of that year so we knew a lot of the arrangements just because of how closely we watched this performance.
By the end of this performance, my friend and I were literally in tears as it was so profoundly breathtaking to watch. There’s just something about ALWs compositions that make them so memorable. The melodies are engraved into my memory for life!

I was fortunate to be wowed by this at the beginning of the season. I've listened to the recording countless times; the music is a marvel. Ralph's percussion writing for this show expressed power to beauty, suspense to romance. The interplay between the different sections is exquisite. What the kids play these days is incredible, but I think this was the epitome of artistic, sophisticated marching percussion writing.

@voiceofreason9238 yeah it's really cool. It isn't souly based on phantom of the opera, it's mainly about bringing back many amazing but forgotten operas. We use the phantom of the opera songs to bring back the theme of opera and the phantoms of the opera (old operas)are being brought back to life. For example, we use Nessun Dorma and the Barber of Seville.

@@fortyfive_ doesn't make a drum corps not a band. It falls in the Venn diagram of bands. Band: a group of persons, animals, or things especially : a group of musicians organized for ensemble playing.
Ergo, it's a band by definition, and since it's a marching organization, it's a marching band.

When DCI was still worth watching. I miss these shows. I’m disappointed my kids will never get to see a brilliant show.

These are not Drum Corps, they are bands, they cannot compare with Riley Raiders, Yankee Rebels, Scout house The Princemen, The Hurricanes, Gay Blades, Connecticut Yankees, Skyliners The Sunrisers and the list goes on. They didn't need Vibes, Trombones, Guitars and extensive systems and all the other crap. The only true Drum and Bugle Corps that still exist is The Marine Drum and Bugle Corps from 8th & I Barracks.

This was before amplification and trombones... and these guys had a super clean company front at the end......
      but that's ok.
You can still be an angry old man.

Where are the silly poses and massive props? No scatter drill? And the hats are getting in the way of the performer's faces. I'm not seeing a whole lot of emoting from the performers. A truely sad show only for dinosaurs!

They got jobbed in 1988. This 1989 version was payback for a piss poor decision. Madison’s 1988 iconic 7 plus minute Malagueña was not the show SCV or Devils had Nothing Madison did brought emotion other than the loud ending. SCV show had me in tears

If they were hosed in 88 then Phantom was hosed in 89. PR 89 will go down as the greatest show to not win.
