This is 1987 SCV recorded ON THE FIELD at DCI finals. Snare line member Nathan Beck had a walkman taped to his carrier under his uniform and captured an amazing performance of an amazing Ralph Hardimon book.

A few things...
• I put the Hornline audio underneath to give a bit more context, but the drum track is the focus.
• Dropped a couple of frames at the "splitting of the lines" but it corrects itself pretty quick.
• Video quality is bad because I've misplaced my videos and had to use the internet.
I sure miss the SCV era with Ralph Hardimon.
This is the show that made me fall in love with SCV and drum corps (and now I help run the Oregon Crusaders, so I guess it stuck). I had this drumline audio on cassette (I can't recall how I got it) and when I played it for James Travers who was in that '87 line, it all came rushing back to him... every vocal (including the screeching halt they sounded when their drill reversed course). He remembered every single one of these beats after all these years. Amazing what we remember, and the impact a show like this has on us.
These are when DCI shows were magical. Whether you were watching or just listening on CD, these shows had something for everyone and had that X factor that made people lose their minds, stand up and scream in applause.

This was the performance that turned me into a drum corps fanatic at age 16, and the benchmark performance by which I've measured all others ever since. As a spectator, I could *feel* this performance, which spoke to me in ways I cannot begin to explain. It still reigns as my personal favorite performance by any corps - of all time - and I've seen plenty over the years since. As a drummer (marched snare like with Black Gold in '88), I didn't consider myself good enough to audition for a corps like SCV, and I was right. When I met and spoke with Ralph Hardimon in 1989, he told me "I can work with your hands, but not your head." He was absolutely right. I wouldn't have been of any use to a corps like SCV because my mind wasn't in the right place for such an endeavor.
Still, I can always appreciate this drumline, the whole corps really to he honest, and this incredibly passionate and inspiring performance.
Those rolls are absolutely ridiculous.
Check out to the snares at 9:50 - buzz rolls, triplet rolls, half time phrasing, etc. One of Ralph Hardimon's many talents is this type of legato writing.

Awww, those Pearls sounded sooooo good. I used this video with a line that I taught a few years ago to highlight that modern corps drumming didn't start in the last decade. I wonder how many today believe that kind of sound was even possible out of the old Championship Series drums? Of course, the shells didn't care for it, but the throat on those things was awesome. And Hardimon's book was legendary. Bravo, SCV!
You could drive a truck between the notes of those rolls. I love the part in the drum feature where the dude yells "Scott Johnson!!!" Those drums were beautiful. I got to march one after they were handed down.

It took 21 years for another drum corp in 2008 in my opinion to match the emotions you guys created that night. Thats why this is truly a legacy show. All members should feel proud. You guys also showed some real class on more than one occassion to lower top 12 corps with words of encouragement.

Stephen Kershaw I don’t remember anyone doing this in the 80’s. There’s not one other, on field, finals run recording out there. If there is, post it. Would love to hear it. There are a very few lot/rehearsal stuff. In the 80’s a portable recorder was at least $100 (a huge sum for a broke snare drummer) the mini disc recorders were like $300+. I purchased this recorder at Fred’s (www.fredsoundofmusic.com) in December of 1986. I was by no means in the line but wanted to record some stuff. Rookies had to report in October and we auditioned, learn the exercises learn technique, then took winter break for December. Well, after winter break, We had to report back to the hall to start rehearsals again and begin learning music and we’re going to be joined by the vets. Guess who forgot the recorder back home in Oregon? So we went on with our thing no big deal but as the season went along and things started to develop I wanted the recorder. So I called my mom and asked her to send it to our final mail stop which was in wherever state. She sent me $50, chocolate chip cookies and my recorder. But I didn’t have a cassette tape.Somehow I finagled a tape I don’t remember where I got it. And just started recording over and over on the same tape. Anyway flash forward to finals night and we are warming up. we had just been beaten the night before for the first time by the cadets at prelims, we were a little shaky But still confident. As we finish warm-ups Alan Kristiansen was tuning my drum and the head popped. This was the first year of using the Kevlar heads so we didn’t have too many backups. There was one extra drum on the truck. So we’re marching to the finals show my drum is broken Alan runs back to the truck to get this spare drum and as were walking on the field he put it on me. I was used to wearing my drum flat. But he put this drum on there was a slight angle to the drum pushing back towards me. Very uncomfortable. So I started to freak out a little bit. I had the recorder taped to my harness but with all these other things going on I didn’t want to think about it. So I leaned over to Nate, my homeboy from Oregon and asked him “hey man could you wear this recorder during our final show?” And Nate being the monster that he is he was like “hell yeah”. So this recording is done on my recorder on Nate’s harness during finals.
Part B to that is I came home after finals in 1987 with the Marauders of Kelso, WA who were very close to my hometown. Somewhere on that trip the tape got “lost”. So Flash is Forward again 20 years and I was doing some work With a local world class Drumline up here in Oregon and the director of the Corps came to me and said “hey man I’ve got this thing you might like.” So we went out into his car and he popped in a cassette tape and it was this tape! He told me he purchased it from some online place years ago. He asked me if I wanted it and of course I said yes please. How much do you want for it? He said I’ll give it to you but you just have to listen to it with me and comment on your feelings as we go through it. what are you thinking about when you hear this? So we listen to it together and I commented on all the vocalizations and stuff that we did. It was super fun. And now I have that original tape. It’s great. Now that I say that I may have to go back and listen to the other side because I don’t think I’ve listen to the second side of only listen to the finals late side. Maybe there some good stuff on side B? Who knows
@@StephenKershaw1 That's true. I do not know and am not aware of everything that has ever happened in drum corps. But you'd think if it were "quite common" at least one other would be on youtube 30+ years later. Maybe post one for me. I'd love to see or hear it. I have seen a very few lot/rehearsal vids from that era. Judges tapes as well. On the field, finals night recordings, not as much. I'd even like to hear a regular season, on the field recording from that era. That would be awesome. There were a ton of extremely talented lines in 87. I am going to do some research and see if I can track down a pre-90's, on field, member recording from finals.

Wow, thanks so much for this. I was a huge DCI fan back in high school and college (1988-1996) and marched snare myself, and this has always been my favorite drum book of all time. To hear it up close and personal like this is amazing.

Man those drums sound great! Particularly that Snare line is absolutely one! I asked my young son without him seeing the snare line: how many snare drummers does that sound like? He said: ONE! I showed him 7 but he said it only sounds like 1! I said that’s what you call: CLEAN!
I was there that night w/friends from The Rochester Crusaders enjoying the performance. 'Russian Christmas Music' has ALWAYS been one of my All time Favorite 'OTL's from the 70's era. And to hear It (In our Faces....) as Only SCV could perform 'IT'...….YEEEEEOWWWWZAH!!!!!

I actually synced this up with the official DCI recording. I mixed the two together and besides a few "warbles", they lined up perfectly and it sounds great. I emphasized the official recording but adding Nathan's recording added some crispness to the drumline. You can actually hear all of the parts underneath the music. His location in the drumline was perfect for getting all of the lines parts. I still have both parts saved separately in case I want to mix them together at different levels. Brilliant foresight Mr.Beck for recording this :)
Just damn. That was some mighty fine drumline... my son is just starting to march like his Dad did and I'm going to show him this so he can learn how it is really done! Thanks for this vid.

Thanks for posting this. I ended up marching SCV in 1990, but left before tour due to health issues.
I love seeing this though, because in 1990, the neutral wood-tone drums used in Phantom 1989 were passed down to SCV Cadets, and these beautiful, all maple, very green Pearl snares were retired. They were just giving these drums away at the corps hall, and I ended up with one of these snares at my home for 6-8 years until I eventually collapsed the rim.
It was an amazing instrument, and I even incorporated it into my drum set. I was sad when it died.
Seeing this really brought back memories. Thanks for posting.

@@timf5963 No, not snare, tenors. I did march snare at UCLA in 1992 before transferring to another university. At various points in my marching career I was on bass, tenors, and snare.

This show was no 2nd place performance! I was in attendance and have always felt that the 1987 finals performances by Santa Clara and The Cadets should have been a tie. No other corps had the kind of emotional performance that matched the Vanguard.

Yes I am biased.... I saw this show many times and even though Cadets had a great drumline that year... it was also said many times that, "if you drop a stick you should not win drums." Those who saw this live as I did know what I am talking about... The quality of sound played by the notes that Mr. Hardimon produced was just the best out there! This corps is uncrowned in many eyes as well...

Garfield had quality notes...This show just stuck out more because the melodies produced were more in sync with our brains...Garfields show was just as GREAT... but they were technically cleaner, so they won...The dissolving company front is the stuff of Legends--visually AND musically !

I keep hearing all this crap about Star in 91, 92, and 93 and how they transformed percussion and were the greatest. WTFE. They barely played during their shows and when they did it wasn't exactly a lot of beats.

After this SCV loss, I like many others I knew that the activity had many flaws. It was a shame that DCI allowed that to happen...

Not a flaw...Garfield was cleaner...sometimes the winner is NOT the favorite...The writing subtleties in Garfield are not so exposed...Yes i like SCV better, perhaps more notes...But if you got a real good recording, The PHAT rolls from the 1987 Cadets drumline during the dissolving company front, is there final statement.
This was the performance that finally equaled the 65 Royalaires that Gail always aspired to.

That was great. I played with the allumni drummers @ the Stanford show this summer. I have the video on my facebook. Even though I never played in any Drum Corps. I was a rock 'n roller in the 80's. I missed out on doing stuff like this.

The audio has been remastered. Due to the fact the audio was recorded on a cassette recorder, it didn't stand the test of time. There were a few audio drop outs, dynamic loss, noise, and quite a bit of timing drift all has been corrected.
The audio has been completely re-synced to match the original DCI recordings.

The show that should have won
I forgot Ralphy wrote that battery arrangement for Lezginka. I remember Marcus High School playing it back in like '95 faster and cleaner than this. Made me realize other drumlines in Texas actually had skills. The good 'ole days.
If you ever watch the recording of the corps playing each other at retreat, I thought I was pissed after 75 announcements....phew.

The first Falams had the natural kevlar finish, so the heads were a yellow-ish color.
They went through two or three sets of drums because the shells couldn't handle the added tension from them being cranked so tight.
and now, because of mismanagement, they are no more.

Wouldn't fly, or you wouldn't even see it today? Even by '87, many lines were moving during their solos, though you could still see stuff like this into the 90s.
well you wouldn't see it because they would be crucified by the judges for lack of demand today. It used to be commonplace to have a "concert" number in band/corps shows. That went away long before this show was put on the field. But by the same token, lining the drum line up like that is a lot of exposure as far as being able to accurately judge technique, etc. Plus from an artistic standpoint it doesn't really propel the show forward as far as "story-line" goes which is a big consideration today. PS I marched Phantom Regiment in 95 and although I didn't march drumline there was a clearly delineated "drum feature"in our show and it seemed sort of like the concept of lots of motion in the solo was still relatively new. I seem to recall some grumblings and comments that it was too much like indoor drumline.

Every line does the exact same thing too, with the squat, lean to one side and look the other way, lean to the other side and look the other direction, then take two or three steps forward, lean in, and stare down the judge while playing drag-triplet rimshots at mega-fortissimo. It's annoying as hell. DCI has become summer WGI. UGH...

CowApocalypse kinda late to this but I doubt every bit of clarity was easy to hear with Mylar heads on top of having a stacked horn line ( sorry old guys, gotta admit Mylar was harder to hear unless drumline played alone lol )

Are the tenors using the small sets? Doesn’t look like 10 12 13 14 to me, especially when they have them pulled up at the beginning of the solo.

Okay drummers, can someone tell me exactly what is going on with the audio on this video? I understand it is the "on field drumline recording" but what exactly does that mean? I hear lots of modulation of the sound. Is that done to suppress the horns and enhance the drums sound for critique purposes?
The modulation is because there is the "original" audio recording on top of the audio from the video. They are slightly out of phase. Because of the different sources, and the low quality (of both), there was some trickery done to make the two line up. If you go back to the original TH-cam of the audio there shouldn't be any modulation.
Thanks for the answer Derrick. Excuse my ignorance, but I guess my question is more of if this "modulated" version, this on field version, is created intentionally to allow the drums to be heard more clearly while the rest of the Corp's sound is suppresed?
Yes. That's exactly what I tried to do. to give (those of us) non-drummers a bit of context for what the percussion parts are and how they fit in the music. If you listen to the original percussion recording you lose a lot of what the brass and pit are doing because of field placement, etc.
dci needs more magic tricks.
