  • This week we move to Tucson, AZ. Staying at the Pima County Fairgrounds RV Park, we experiment with staying put longer to both save a little money and stretch our winter in the southwest. While in Tucson, we visit the Pima Air and Space Museum and explore Saguaro National Park.

    I love that you guys are aware that not everyone in the world is flush with cash. I watch these full-timers who are always going parasailing or scuba diving or whatever they want to do.... They act like money DOES grow on Cacti. Seeing you NOT go into a place that is $22 is refreshing. Love following your adventures.

    I have noticed that you occasionally have problems with "jumping cholla" cactus. With 25 years of horse riding in the deserts, I found the best thing to carry was a hair comb and a small pair of pliers. Removing cholla cactus is a breeze with a comb, and the single spines left can be easily pulled with the pliers. Just a little helpful hint to make your hikes a bit more enjoyable.

    Well, if you lived here year round you would be much more appreciative of the cooler weather and rain because winter rain is what saves the desert flora and fauna.

    WONDERFUL Vid! 😁👍
    From the beautiful videoography, to all the information on all the places you visited! I live just 25 minutes from Saguaro National Park, but just for 4 years now, and didn't really do much exploration of it till this past Fall when my daughter came to visit. She's a Very Outdoorsy girl and got my out discovering Many local areas! We even went to the EAST side Saguaro National Park which I didn't even know existed! 😜 I haven't been to the Air n Space Museum (or Old Tucson) in forever fun to see! Watching your segment at Saguaro National Park and Signal Hill with the Petroglyphs really brought back my recent experience with my daughter! Thank you! ❤ 😁
    Side Note, I Think maybe you meant "Gates Pass" road vs. Grants? And yes, Very Beautiful out there, especially in the winter! 😜 😊 Thanks again for Sharing! Safe Travels, especially in these crazy days! 😜

    Have been to the museum and old Tucson both are worth the money but the museum was the best saw hummingbirds nest with eggs. Then saw 2 fighting for territory or to protect their eggs. It was so neat I could have watched them all day. There was a little girl who told me ssh🤫 and showed the nest🤯🤭

    Have been to Tucson and Saguaro NP many times. If you get the chance to go back to this area I highly recommend the Desert Museum! It's not really a "museum" per se, but more of a zoo and museum all rolled into one. They have many of the critters who live out in the desert there, they have a bird type of show with falcons and other prey type birds. Hummingbird exhibit, where there are nests and hummers buzzing around close by, cafe and bookstore etc... Highly recommend!

    Poor baby. I had to take some of those awful cactus needles out of Rottenbear one time ... at the coast. I love the planes, like Brie ... don't know much about them though. "Could think of better things to do with them" ... lol. They do make a cool canvas. Patches are great souvenirs, like stickers, and pins. That dusty environment must reek havoc on the vehicles. Not sure I would want to pollute my rig in the desert. I had no idea that the Saguaro cactus can get as tall as a tree, 75 feet! WOW! The desert views are interesting to me, but not what I think of as "beautiful." I bet the sky is very beautiful, though, especially at night. Those tourist traps are expensive. I don't blame you for skipping those. I really appreciate you sharing your stay there. It helps me in planning future trip ... where to go ... where not to go ... etc. Great video! excellent videography! I loved the airplane shots and editing. Brie, you do such a great job narrating. Thanks again, and stay safe!

    If you venture out into the desert, you'll benefit from carrying a leaterman (or similar) with needle nose pliers to grab those cholla bits. I carry a set of tweezers with a small magnifying glass attached for checking the dogs & snagging all of those very fine needles.

    Yea winter causes a lot of people to slow down. Even us. Don’t forget there are parts of Arizona where it snows too. Snakes and scorpions are my biggest fears for when we head out west. We think the painted planes are cool too. Thanks for sharing.

    Well done video. I visited those sites in 1972 when I was working in Phoenix. Glad to see that Old Tucson is still open. When I was there they were actually filming takes for a made for TV western (Yuma) starring Clint Walker (Cheyenne). Interesting how they do the scenes. At one point he was talking to Morgan Woodward who was on horseback and Walker was standing on a box since he was so tall, in order to get both of them in the scene. Amazing how many times they shoot a scene. I wish I had known you were going there, I would have put up the $44 just so you could visit and share my memories. Remember the TV western "High Chapparal?" Based at Old Tucson. Most any western with Saguaro cacti are shot in the Tucson Area. Happy journey.

The Pima Air and Space museum is a must see, even riding around the airplane graveyard is interesting. This has been a cold winter in Arizona. We were in California and Arizona in November and the first part of December and it was COLD! We were wondering what this park was like because we had been told that it was a nice place to stay. When we went through there last fall they were closed for camping because of the fair. Tucson is an awesome place. We really enjoy that area. That air museum needs to be on our bucket list!! We visited the Saguaro National Park last spring. It was beautiful. We visited the East Side. Pretty in the West side too!

    • @EmbracingDetours
      @EmbracingDetours  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the confirmation! I figured people would think I was being overdramatic about it, but it was cold!!! The fairgrounds wasn't an overly pretty place to camp, but it was FHU for a reasonable price in a good area. We loved Tucson, so much to see and do there we barely scratched the surface. The Pima Air Museum was awesome and I was sad to miss the BioSphere there, next time! Travel safe and, as always, thanks for watching and commenting 👍😊

Our budget needs more free or inexpensive sites. Love the videos and "everything in the desert ..." would include snakes !!!!! Sabino Canyon in East Tucson would have been a great hike for you. Very scenic and easy hikes. I can't remember about dog friendly status but I went there several times in October and hit that canyon. Also enjoyed Saguro East and West, as well as some other National Parks in Southern Arizona. There is definitely a lot to see and do there. Cheers.

    I can’t believe how warm it looks there in December, but then I guess it is the desert! Did you spend Christmas on the road? It’s a definitive March here in Wiltshire. We’ve had three certified storms in quick succession- Ciara, Dennis and Jorge. A lot of flooding and 70mph winds. I think we’re finally out the other side. Days are getting lighter and the blossom is burgeoning, it’s my favourite season. Sarah & Daisy 🙋🏻‍♀️😺

    I took the tram tour. The tram driver narrated throughout. He was an aviator in Vietnam and narration was based on real life experiences and knowledge. Well worth for six dollars.

    Very cool, we were just at the Pima Air and Space Museum on Feb 18th ourselves. Great place. I barely missed reserving for the boneyard tour, and I was reserving 16 days in advance, which was too late. I'll do that another time, the next time I'm passing through Tucson. Don't miss the Titan II missile museum just South of Tucson about 20 miles on Hwy 19. It's a chilling tour of the underground command center of a missile silo from the 60's. Old Tucson was fun, we saw the old movie set made in 1939, now a tourist attraction. Not worth the money, but we did it anyway. The stuntman demo was the best part, those guys were hilarious. Oh, I just noticed you were there in Dec, but published this in March, so it appears you missed the missile museum.

      Thank you, Tom!! Stinks about the Boneyard Tour, we have enlisted that same mindset of next time!! We were also interested in the Titan missile museum as well as the BioSphere 2 but just ran out of time. Next time!! Thank you so much for your insights, sounds like you had a great time. Safe travels and thanks for watching and commenting 👍😊

    you're only bamboozled if you think that a desert is warm/hot in the winter. (It isn't FL.) But Arizona IS way warmer than any place north that has real winters. Isn't the PA&SM amazing? It's SO big!! We thought the tram tour well worth it but the BEST part was the WWII B-17 bomber pilot that volunteers as a docent on Thursdays and tells all his war stories. We enjoyed it so much we even bought his book. We weren't able to camp at the fairgrounds b/c it was rented out for a group.

    • @EmbracingDetours
      @EmbracingDetours  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are absolutely correct!! We loved the Pima Air & Space Museum - we actually filmed quite a bit in the WWII B-17 building but unfortunately, it didn't make the cut. I think we could have made an entire video just of that museum, it was that extensive.

    Maddie says, "I'm not really anxious; I just got mama well trained." ROFL. Great video. I don't know why some of these places have to be SO expensive. I mean, with the number of people coming through the area on any given day they would still make a huge profit if the price were lowered. As for myself, if I owned a place like that I would also give TH-camrs a break on the price IF they could (1) show they had a successful channel with a fair number of subscribers and/or quality content, and (2) promised to give my place an honest review. Word of mouth advertising is ALWAYS the best advertising so why not take advantage of it? LOL. You two may only have just under 13k subscribers but your content is always high quality and well edited. Safe travels y'all!

    The Boneyard is just north east of the museum. You can see it on google maps here: www.google.com/maps/search/boneyard/@32.1491869,-110.8357715,488m/data=!3m1!1e3
    It's different from the museum because it's actually an active storage and repair facility for the USAF. Google "309 AMARG" for more info.

    Great video, as always. I too travel with 2 dogs, so I had to check that Az. law. It is Not illegal to leave your dogs in a vehicle, "unless injury or death is likely by doing so". Right from the Az. State law. Just fyi. 2 other states have a similar law, but it is legal to leave your dogs in the car in all 50 states.

      Good to know, thank you for sharing!! Being from a very hot state (FL), we understand the dangers of dogs in a car in the heat and make an effort to never put our dogs at risk. A little research and some common sense go a long way 🐶👍
