- Continuing our tour of Southwestern Arizona, we move to Yuma, AZ. Anxious to get the desert off from the past month of boondocking, we head to full hookups at the Westwind RV Resort. From Yuma it's a short hop across the Mexican border, so we head over to Los Algodones where we enjoy a little shopping and exploring. Dental work in Mexico is extremely common so we even take the opportunity in Algodones to get our teeth cleaned. After our week of luxury at the RV Resort, we head back into public land to continue our boondocking experience. We camp at Mittry Lake BLM and venture out to explore what other camping options are available in the area. We're surprised to learn that the Bureau of Land Management has several different cheap dry camping options, including LTVA or Long Term Visitor Areas and Recreation Sites in addition to what we're accustomed to. This whole trip has been a learning experience of how to winter inexpensively someplace warm.

I got suck in Yuma long ago moving my father in law there, I rented a car and drove around the whole state by myself and had a blast. Lot's of stuff to see and do there.
Fellow yuma here. You did a great job covering inexpensive camping in yuma AZ. Most the RV parks are 55+ or long term family parks. We farm in Yuma, Az and could do a tour if you are ever down in the winter again. -Alicia

My husband works out at YPG. It’s an interesting place. They used to have tours before COVID and if you go down the road by the canons, there is a great collection of tanks.

We spent the majority of the Winter at the Imperial Dam LTVA. It is wonderful. Your LTVA pass also allows you to enjoy the got showers at the lake. Tokens are $1.00.
Besides the church there is also a mail service at the Christian Center so you can get mail and packages.
Plan to return next winter. Oh and there also wild burros here.

Born and raised here in Yuma. Nice to see another person's perspective of my hometown. My father was Army so we were stationed out at YPG when my family first came here back in the 60's. I went to school on base as well. After my parent's divorce my mother remarried and we lived in a mobile home at a "campground" along the river called Imperial Oasis at the time and it's now known as Hidden Shores. I'm very familiar with all the places out there along the river and loved living out there as a kid.

Cocopah Indian RV Resort in Yuma is the best. My folks wintered there for 15 seasons, then eventually bought a house. Algadones Mexico is a border town completely set up for American/Canadian health care
I'm happy to find out about all the camping options near Yuma. My brother and his wife live in the area, and this gives us options to come out and visit--once all this craziness blows over.

Most of our regular snowbirds wait all year for any dental work to have done much cheaper in Mexico. Ive met many who have waited even when they miss a season. LoL. Its big business. Pharmacy as well.
There are actually several dentists and pharmacists who own and operate there that live in Yuma

I swear when I see your cat relaxing behind you in the van I get relaxed myself, lol. But it's a coincidence that my wife just today asked, "I wonder what they're doing to self isolate?" glad you are self isolating and safe. there will be plenty of time in the future for travels and adventures. years ago we bought blankets, didn't check them out, left them rolled up and when we got back across the border found one had a big hole in the middle. If they can rip you off some of the people will. but the tacos are great.

We've been coming to Yuma for four years and rent a lot for $300.00 a month it's full hookup electric is separate but never more the $65.00. So $365.00 a month you can't beat that. And all four months here is awesome.

My mom’s family lives in Yuma. I’ve been through the border crossing shown. So long as you stay in the area shown in Mexico you will be okay. Don’t go too far out or the problems will appear. Be careful camping in the desert. Drug smugglers and coyotes traffic illegals through those areas. It can get very dangerous. My family lives in the foothills. Go over to the casinos, we like the paradise casino. Great buffet.

You're very welcome! Arizona is a beautiful and diverse state. Just know that the part of Arizona that stays warm for winter (the southern part) will not include many of the AZ highlights, but it's still very worthwhile!
I hope you decided to stay in Az for the winter. With so few cases, only 10 in our area so far, this is a pretty safe place, and warmer than many other places. Stay Safe! We were in Algodonas for our dental appointments (annual) 2 weeks ago. We have been going to the same Dentist for 11 years. Yuma usually has cool winter activities, until the heat starts to arrive.
Thank you for the concern, unfortunately we had already left Arizona by the time Covid-19 became a pandemic. Wow, 11 years of dentist work in Algodones - that's a testament! We wouldn't hesitate to return there for dental work. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Hi guys just notice you did not even bring up New Mexico. I have not done any RVing so its all new to me and I know there are a few places Id like to visit in New Mexico. Thanks Guys!
You guys should also visit rocky point (puerto penasco), it's usually called the beach of arizona that have more tourists and americans living there than natives, and the best time to visit is during the spring time, and it's a warm beach like hawaii and not as cold as San Diego, or Ensenada baja california as it is in the Sea of Cortez; similar to the book of John Steinbeck's black pearl. Although it's not like puerto vallarta, cancun, yucatan peninsula, etc.
(although it is far more safer as you're closer to the border [like almost an hour or two hour drive] at a tourist town that's in sonora which doesn't have major cartel violence or police curroption like the other major border towns/major contested trafficking routes or major mexican cities; it's actually more safer there in my experience than algodones and you can actually buy a second home by the beach in mexico that's pretty cheap)
It still is a very beautiful unique beach and the local mexican sea food is good, I'd personally prefer los mariscos and sea food salsa from sinaloa mazatlan, which you can find some mazatlan fayucas stands there that are more traditional style if you look for them

there's dry camping near Martinez lake just north of Yuma and the army proving grounds you drove past in this video. $5 a night to dry camp at fishers landing, essentially the exact same area on the Colorado river. With the quarantine it might not be great to go because the two restaurants and 2 bars are closed but you might wamt to check it out!
So cool. In February when I ran into Bri at the tractor store in Yuma, is was about the time you filmed this video. You were staying at Mittry Lake. While we were in Yuma this year we too drove around looking at the various boon docking sites many of the same covered in this video. Awesome and thank you. Stay safe!
