  • Goldendoodles with long hair look incredibly cute. But keeping a long coat on Goldendoodles (or other doodle dogs) is not necessarily easy or practical.
So WHY do I keep my Doodle Dog Sophie in a long coat? And HOW?
In this video, I share my approach to keeping Sophie's coat long while being responsible for her wellbeing as an extra-fluffy doggo.
I do occasionally have her clipped, but in between, let her coat grow out. In fact, I'm contemplating trying to do it by myself... one of these days!
I also share some images of beautiful grown goldendoodle dogs which have never had their body coats clipped.
See the stunning Dallas, who belongs to Kimberly the US.
And see the gorgeous duo Mia and Milo, belonging to Helen in Switzerland. Helen's website is a great resource for long-coat maintenance for goldendoodles and other long-haired doodle breeds...

Another very informative video! You have definitely inspired me to avoid salon grooming if I can! I know it will be hard work, but I've got the time and the motivation. I'll let you know how I go!

Yes, please do Judy. Like any new skill, your grooming will improve over time. I made it a challenge for myself to improve each time I give it a go. xx

Hi Joanna!! Sophie looks beautiful with her long coat. My jasper’s coat is more on the curly side so I can’t let it grow too long. Very prone to matting otherwise I would leave it on the longer side.

Hi Jalysvette, thank you - she's a cutie. It's good to know the pluses & minuses of different coat types and work with that. Jasper's coat would be great I'm sure for being clipped in that round teddybear style about the face. Sophie's facial hair is too straight for that. Have a lovely weekend x

I prefer my Sheepadoodle with longer hair, but it mats very easily. I use a mix of small amounts of hair conditioner with coconut oil. as the hair gets longer this seems to help a little

That's a great tip to know, thanks for sharing Hemant.

Our Connie (cavoodle) is battling matts right now after her spaying, I just can't groom her like normal because I'll be stressing the stitches and aggravating her shaving rash (from her procedure), but I do my 100% to keep them down.
Usually I keep her hair length 5+ inches and that's great for me, but I couldn't shave her down for her surgery due to it being winter and she's just a puppy.😥

Hi Rusty, around spaying time, make it all about your pup and never mind a perfect look. Just cut out the matts as they come around her belly area, leaving the remainder long to keep her warm in winter (you can still gently brush and comb her along her back, tail and sides where there are no stitches to aggrevate). The cut-out parts on the belly area will grow out in no time, and very soon you will be able to brush and comb her underside as normal after her stitches have healed. Enjoy your sweet cavoodle x

@@MyGoldendoodleDiary Awww thank you for the encouraging words.💖
I've been waiting a few days for her to settle before using a comb on her again and to let her anti-itching medication settle her skin, she's so uncomfortable the poor little tyke.
Her absolute problem is her legs so they've got bald patches (she was especially matted where they shaved and put the IV in), so far the rest of her is holding up.
I'll just keep it at a light combing for now as you said and reintroduce her full routine over time as the surgery wound heals.
Anything to help her recover without further troubles.

We to golden doodle foo but not sure if they actually sell the tools to groom my guy. The slicker is not available and I wonder if you could recommend another. The other three links also don’t seem to work ??. Thnx

What brand of comb and slicker brush do you use?

Hi Joe, here are links to the brushes I mostly recommend - also listed in the video description. The 2-sided metal comb is just a cheapie from Target. Thanks for watching x
