Goldendoodle Puppy Coat Types / Goldendoodles Shedding

  • It can be very hard to predict what type of hair coat a goldendoodle will have. Join me as I explain what we looked for when picking out our puppy Scarlet.
    Shedding can also be a concern for many people. We had two Puggles that we loved very much but we were always cleaning and sweeping up hair. With Scarlet we have not experienced any shedding, although her adult hair has yet to come in. That may change but we think we've made the right choice!
    I
    By using the tips I’ve mentioned in this video, we're hoping it will help you make the right choice also! Thank you for following on Scarlet’s Journey ❣️

    Lots of really great info ! Dogs must love deer antlers because our labs are always bringing them up in the yard . I wonder if these dogs came about because someones dog accidentally bred together and thought oh that's cute lets call them goldendoodle .

    • @OzarkMountainGoats
      @OzarkMountainGoats  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aaric Hale - thank you 😊 Jim found the deer antler in a hay bale from last summer! She loves it and I think they’re really good for helping to keep teeth clean. From what I’ve read, The golden doodle was first created in the late 60s as a guide dog. I’ve also read that they were created on purpose because they were more hypoallergenic. Anyway, they are an extremely popular mix now! ❤️

    Thank you for the videos. How did you decide between an f1 and an f1b? I know the f1b’s shed less, but do you know if there are differences in temperament?

    • @OzarkMountainGoats
      @OzarkMountainGoats  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Morecoffee Icecream - hi, and thank you for the comment! I’ve done a lot of research on goldendoodles and honestly didn’t notice any real particular difference between F1 and F1b concerning personality and temperament. I think golden retrievers and poodles both have many amazing qualities. I went with an F1b because I wanted to decrease the chance of shedding and I had heard that it can be “iffy” with a first generation goldendoodle. Thanks for watching and have a great weekend! 😊 ~ Josie

    Hi! What a great video thanks! I’m in the process of adopting a goldendoodle (my first one ever). I’m leaning more towards and F1B due to shedding, and I wanted to ask for your experience with your pup, does she shed a lot?

    • @OzarkMountainGoats
      @OzarkMountainGoats  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi and thank you for your question. Scarlet does not shed at all. She has an undercoat on her ears and tail that I brush out, but that’s it! I absolutely love her coat. That being said, some F1b doodles have a very curly poodle coat that requires more daily maintenance. Good luck with your puppy - they are wonderful dogs! ❤️

    • @ilka89gaby
      @ilka89gaby 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OzarkMountainGoats thanks so much for answering my question. One last question sorry, were you able to see the parents beforehand, and did you see if they shed at all?
      I saw the mother and she did shed, but she is an F1. The dad didn’t seem to shed at all. But we are concerned that we may end up getting a shedding pup.

    • @OzarkMountainGoats
      @OzarkMountainGoats  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ilka89gaby - I did see the parents and the father is a standard poodle. So he does not shed. But his coat requires a lot of maintenance. The mother is an F1 goldendoodle. I don’t think she sheds much, and if she does it comes out in a little puffballs instead of regular type dog hair. Because golden doodles are a mixed breed dog you never know exactly what you will get. You can just do your best when it comes to picking a puppy and hope that you get the coat you desire.

    Scarlett is adorable and so big now. Our 26lb 5 month old doodle still has her puppy coat soft and wavy. For the past few weeks when I comb her I get tiny bits of floof. Do you think Scarlett will get lighter in color? Ours is a apricot color and is starting to get light spots on her coat🥺.

    • @OzarkMountainGoats
      @OzarkMountainGoats  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Elisa - I do think Scarlet will eventually get a little lighter. Her hair was beginning to look lighter to me - kind of like blonde hair that lightens in the summer sun. Then I shaved her yesterday and she’s a little more red now. Her dad is red and mom is apricot. What color is Maple’s parents?

    How early can you see the facial furnishings? We have one scheduled to be born in the spring

    • @OzarkMountainGoats
      @OzarkMountainGoats  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      By the time I had to choose my puppy at three weeks of age, I could definitely see a difference in the two girls that were available. They didn’t really have facial furnishings but the wavy/kinky hair was more apparent in the other puppy. So that’s why I chose Scarlet. Good luck on picking out your puppy!

    Did her hair get more curly as she got older? Our f1b looked like yours but at about a year was pretty curly.

    • @OzarkMountainGoats
      @OzarkMountainGoats  ปีที่แล้ว

      No, her coat is easy to manage and she doesn’t shed. Win win! I do cut her short every 8 weeks or so because she’s pretty hot blooded. The only trouble spots are around her ears. Her tail has an undercoat so it needs brushed. 😊

  • @anandersonnovel

      I’m sorry I don’t. But if you go to our TH-cam channel and then look under the heading “Community” - you can scroll back and find a picture of her at 3 weeks old. I am very confused with my puppy because he is unfurnished but has wave on his body and tighter curls around his chest and ears. How is this possible for an F1B?

    • @OzarkMountainGoats
      @OzarkMountainGoats  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Puppies coats will often change during the first 12-15 months. And because they are a mixed breed - a mixed coat is possible. Scarlet has wavy hair but it is definitely more curly in certain areas.

  • @ThisbeandPyramus
    @ThisbeandPyramus 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Is this your dog's uncut coat at 6 months or have you trimmed her at this point? I ask because it seems shorter than many I've seen and it would be fantastic to have a super slow growing coat like that so frequent haircuts wouldn't be necessary.

    • @OzarkMountainGoats
      @OzarkMountainGoats  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ThisbeandPyramus - hi and thank you for your question. It WOULD be fantastic to have a slow growing coat! 😀. Hello, been doing a lot of research on this cross but it's tough to find info for....if you take an F2B doodle, and breed with an english cream pure retriever female, what do you think you'd get?

    • @OzarkMountainGoats
      @OzarkMountainGoats  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      casey perlstein - hi and thank you for your question. I’m no expert at figuring percentages of dog breeds but by adding a full blooded retriever back in, you will end up with mostly retriever. I think it would be “roughly” 20% poodle and 80% retriever. Actually 18.75/81.25.
      Thanks for watching and have a great day ❣️ ~ Josie

    • @Kristina2
      @Kristina2 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      that would be 50 50 IF the b is poodle. If the b is golden, then the original comment is correct. f2b is usually 75 poodle, mixing back in a golden would be 50 50.

    Thank you for sharing your video. My kids, 9 and 6, want a mini golden doodle but from my research it seems that mini's weigh up to 40 lbs when fully grown. Would you recommend a petite or toy golden doodle instead? We want one that wouldn't weigh more than 20 lbs fully grown. Thank you.

    • @OzarkMountainGoats
      @OzarkMountainGoats  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Barilav - hi, and thank you for your question. From what I’ve read, toy goldendoodles are typically 20 pounds or less. A mini golden doodle is usually 20 to 30 pounds. However, because goldendoodles are a cross between two other breeds, there is no guarantee of weight & height. Sounds like you would be happier with a toy golden doodle because they are usually 20 pounds or less. . I would stay away from a teacup size because they have many health issues. Breeders take the runt of the litter and keep breeding smaller and smaller and it causes problems. Good luck with your search and thank you for watching ❣️ ~ Josie

  • @lyzw8144
    @lyzw8144 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    My goldendoodle is one year old, and he stated shedding like crazy. I am I little worried since I read they should not shed much. Do you think this is normal?

    • @OzarkMountainGoats
      @OzarkMountainGoats  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi - Goldendoodles are a mixed breed so you never know exactly what you’ll get. From what I’ve read, it’s very common for their coat to change at around a year old. If your dog is a F1 doodle then the possibility of shedding is much greater than dogs like Scarlet. She is a F1b - meaning she is basically 3/4 poodle.
