I remember trying to get my mom to buy this game for me at Toys R Us and she was like hmm... i dunno if this is age appropriate for a 9 year old... Then we went to the movies and watched Natural Born Killers, lol. My mom was weird.

I love these horror-related games. Videogame covers in general used to look like B-movie posters, it meshed beautifully with vg tropes. Thanks for the streams, Mike. You are the true nerd, pure passion.

I used to love playing this back in the day, and the original in the arcade.
I don't know if I ever got to play the original arcade game. I don't think so. I mean, on a real machine.

I've bought so many versions of many Nintendo IPs multiple times. There's just no way Nintendo ever truly fails. Maybe they have a system here or there that doesn't do well, but their IPs are gold.

As far as I know, Rick and Jennifer were super into paranormal studies in the first game, and so wound up at the West mansion -- the site of unspeakable rites and ghastly experiments in the recent past, *OoOoo*, a bit of an homage to Herbert West of H.P. Lovecraft fame, I think -- where they are attacked by cool gooey monsters and Jennifer gets kidnapped by the same. An injured Rick makes a pact with the Terror Mask and finally rescues her . . . only to have her transform into a monster and be forced to kill her. Jennifer is actually DEAD from the get-go in this one (although the U.S. translation muddies that a bit, or so I understand), and you are going to the "hidden" mansion near the ruins of the West mansion (the burnt ruins in the first stage of Splatterhouse 2) to look for a portal to the Underworld.
How about Manhunt? Remember you can kill with bags over the people's heads and other stuff
I love all the splatterhouse games even the awful ps3/xbox 3D reboot. 😅 By the way it was great to see you and James playing Contra a few weeks ago, we miss James and Mike Mondays!

It's funny, everyone seems to have a different opinion on the 3D Splatterhouse. I have yet to play it.
The Xbox360 Splatterhouse is good for a Splatterhouse fan even with a few issues and glitches. Stay away from the PS3 port as it has a terrible framerate.

Main villain of the Splatterhouse series is Dr. West. The mansion they go down in is named after him. The XB360/PS3 game is basically a reboot of the original game. Too bad it was rushed in development & got some content cut + has some choppy audio & buggy gameplay toward the end. Loved hearing the voice of Darkwing Duck/Negaduck as the terror mask 👍.
I like to run through the Xbox 360 Splatterhouse every October. It's fun.
I'll need to play it, very divided opinions here.

Jennifer died on the first game, but the mask tells you you can get her back if you go back to the mansion. The mansion burnt down at the end of the first game, but Rick finds a second mansion hidden behind the ruins (kind of stupid). The monster who took Jennifer is "The evil one" (blue giant that chases Rick after he rescues Jennifer. Comes back at the end of the third game).
There is a slight mistranslation with Splatterhouse 2, where it says "You have to go back to the mansion" when there is actually a second, secret mansion.
As for the plot, during the first game you reach your girlfriend Jennifer.. only to have her mutate into a giant, uncontrollable monster... you're forced to kill her, and then destroy the entire mansion to make sure the horrors never happen again.
Now 3 months later, you begin to have visions of Jennifer's soul being pulled into hell and the mask goading you into putting it on, saying you can save her. So you must go find the secret mansion, enter the hell gate and save your girlfriend... only for the mask to turn on you in the end.
I just watched/listened to Talk About Games. Awesome Show! You made a good point about how old games motivated us to keep trying and learning from failed attempts. We even had to learn the games’ sprite flaws.

splatter house was one of my favorite 16 bit franchises. i was always hoping for a fourth game but have it play more like dynamite duke where jason throws cleavers to kill far away enemies and punches and kicks close ones.
there is a low key 4th game but its only on the Japanise famicom

If you love the old games you'll enjoy the 360 version, kinda has a evil dead 2 vibe along with all 3 games as unlockables so it's a complete package

So cool to see you exploring the Genesis, Mike. I grew up with a Snes and N64 and honestly I missed out on a lot as a kid not owning any Sega stuff. I thought the Saturn was a pile of ass as well for some reason until I discovered it's 2d fighters, and other hidden gems.
You get all 3 original Splatterhouse games on Splatterhouse reboot for PS3/Xbox360 as unlockables if I remember correctly
I played Splatterhouse on PS3 and loved it. I unlocked everything and the original Trilogy is so cool.
Unpopular opinion, but I loved the Ps3/360 version more than the originals and I grew up on them. It is definitely flawed (hell, most games are, let's be honest), but I enjoyed it tremendously. It's a bit tough if you go for all the achievements, but worth a playthrough just for the experience.
i like the remake as well i loved the fact that the og games are on the disc for the 360 version on the ps3 you just put a code in to get the games

The 7th gen Splatterhouse is underrated and contains the first 3 on the disc.

The most metal game I’ve ever played in the literal sense is brutal legend. Metaphorically though, I like survival horror. Silent hill, resident evil, the evil within.
Such a wasted opportunity that game. The visuals, the soundtrack, the story, are great but then you get to the RTS style missions and it falls apart. Tried playing it multiple times but I always quit after 2-3 RTS missions. It's not fun, in fact it's annoying.
I didn't know about Brütal Legend. Not sure if it'd be my kind of thing.
I still love how hard the splatterhouse games lean into horror. Wish they were more than basic beat’em ups tho.

This is a great game i have al loose cart of the game for Genesis. I have Splatter House for Switch on the Namco Collection. Great creepy game.
I loved the PS3 Splatterhouse. Even got the special mask statue that came with it. It's not perfect but its a damn good time.

The Xbox360 Splatterhouse is good fun with a few gameplay issues. It also has all 3 original games that can be accessed by playing through the 360 Splatterhouse.

Kung Fu Master might have set off the jump kick phase. Its the first game I can think of where it was used as a strong attack to topple multiple enemies.

I have played the original game on the Turbo Graphixs back in the day and fell in love with it. The remake on the Xbox didnt get a chance to play it. As far as this secon version of the game i didnt know it existed.Might have to try and find it .
