This was one of my favorite Saturn games growing up. Had a bad ass sound track, cool racing mechanic that was different, courses were cool, and had lots of little secrets and easter eggs. The controls were the biggest learning curve because you have to use the triggers and actually slow down to not fly off the course lol. BTW Knuckles is OP because you can glide and then when you get Gold Sonic he is super OP.

Although I need to get hold of an analogue pad because apparently it's a lot better to control with. Mike, you've inspired me to do a full playthrough rather than having a casual game here and there.
The gates require a certain number of rings to open. Each gate has the amount of rings posted above them. Also when you hit boosts it consumes your rings (up to 50 I believe) and the more rings the boost consumes the longer the boost lasts. You have to strategically decide when to use a boost and when to save your rings to open a gate. Chaos emeralds are behind gates. I personally love this game. Also Knuckles is probably the best character to begin with

Ya these controls kinda stink but that aside, I genuinely think Sonic R is a severely underrated gem. I get why some people might not really dig how complex the level layouts are, but they’re pretty unique and amazing IMO. I mean it ain’t no masterpiece but it’s got unique ideas that I think are worth exploring in a future game. Wish Sega would make a sequel building off the level style with better controls.
Hey Mike, have you played Zelda/Metroid Crossover? It's a randomizer that literally combines Zelda and Metroid into a single game, so you go back and forth collecting items from one game to use in the other (for example, you can buy the Ice Beam from a shop in Zelda, or find rupees in Metroid). There's one version for the original NES games, and another for Link to the Past and Super Metroid.
I played this on PC as a kid in the early 2000s. Controls were terrible but I managed to unlock all characters and do just about everything in the game. I played the first race probably just as many times as Mike did before really figuring it out. You have to skid into the corners or use your jump to help turn in the corners. Finding the shortcuts and figuring out that some parts of the track are better off skipping by running off the track. I enjoyed the game but have little desire to go back and play again. It's funny watching this after not playing the game in 20 years. I can't believe I put in time to complete this game but watching the video brings back the memories of managing my anger so my mom wouldn't kick me off the computer.

It was remarkable, you felt like you could play it with your eyes closed.. Well, this game is the exact opposite of that which defeats the whole purpose of what a Sonic game is supposed to be! Just thinking about a kid and this being his first Sonic experience? It literally makes me want to cry for that poor child, poor thing was utterly robbed of what's supposed to be such a perfect experience! 😭

That's sad those are the only Sonic games released for Sega Saturn and the only best Sonic games on the system is "Sonic Jam" and "Sonic 3D Blast" that's it.

Also when you hit boosts it consumes your rings (up to 50 I believe) and the more rings the boost consumes the longer the boost lasts.
