I am a machinist. Built my own small steam engine. I love this stuff...can't get enough. Steam is still king. People don't realize...between gas turbine engines, and steam turbine powered power plants, it's still used today. All over the world. Love it.
I came from China, and this reminds me of my hometown and childhood. At the period of time in 90's, there were huge amounts of tractors used at my place called Fujian. When I hear the licker engine running, the sound was familiar and touching.
Dave Micolichek some did..... I believe Fairbanks Morse had some flame lickers could be wrong. I know I’ve seen at least one. Could even be a locally produced tractor using what was on hand. There are Hit and miss tractors 2 stroke 4 stroke Steam List goes on .......lanz bulldog tractors used a concept very similar to flame lickers
Small adjustments make a lot of difference for an improvement in performance. I miss working on motors, but unfortunately, my country is in a deep financial crisis and we have to work hard, I do not have more free time. Do you intend to improve the speed of this engine? I have some tips that can help because I know a video of a Japanese who made a homemade engine that reaches speeds of 1200 rpm or more. Leandro Wagner.
Hi Leandro it's been a while. That's really sad news because you were doing a wonderful job with Stirling engines. I still watch your videos from time to time. As for the engine, I guess better cooling (cylinder water jacket) would give it some speed. What would you suggest in my case?
These engines are actually vacuum driven, the power stroke is the collapsing of the super heated gas in a flame. So they work way better the colder the piston walls are.
So the suction created by the flame in the cylinder when the valve closes is enough to make the piston cycle forward again. And the centrifical force of the flywheels is enough to pull the piston back. Thus as long as there is flame there is power. Not sure you could squeeze much torque out of one of these engines based on the fact that all power is generated from suction though.
ahh, i see, it runs off the cooling of air. to start off, the valve's open and that lets hot air in, then it closes and the air cools and contracts bringing the cylinder forward. The inertia of the flywheels bring the cylinder back and open the valve ready for another cycle
I don't think that's the complete answer though. The intake cycle is pulling _partially_ burning hydrocarbon vapor and the port closes just before the piston reaches the far end. I think the vapor continues to burn and give the piston an extra bit of shove through the remaining ~20 degrees of cycle to the end. This hypothesis could be tested by using super-hot air coming through a tube; this could be done by wrapping a copper tube in a helix, heating it red-hot over a large burner flame and blowing through the other end of the tube with the outlet near the intake port.
I bought a 4 stroke and did alot of stuff to make it run good, still pretty raw looking but maybe one day ill round out all the edges and polish everything

Problem is: the minimum pressure would in theory be a total vacuum. means that the difference in pressure is just 1 atm, leaving this concept with almost no torque to work with...
Alexandre Ahlstrom that might work for low revolutions. Even though air is light and easy to move, it becomes quite a burden for the propeller if it starts to compress. (it will compress around the propeller and expand right behind it again) You can't get by the fact, that the power of such an engine is still really low. And it's against the law of physics to assume the propeller power could be higher than that of the driving engine. Power is always the product of force and speed. Because the torque of this engine is very low, you woulf need very high revolutions to gain some output power BUT this engine is also very bad with high speeds, loosing torque, because the time to cool down the gases becomes too short to produce a pressure difference. So there is not only low torque but also a maximum speed. It's a really useless engine and was never commercially used, even though it's about 200 years old.
Very little IMO. I find it an interesting engine, running off of heated air expansion, not actually burning fuel. No fuel, no constant lubrication, probably makes it a interesting part of the development of the internal combustion engine. Either that, or China knocked off Otto and made something that did not work well. Sooooo, this is where it all started. :)
Its not actually a stirling engine though, despite what the ad claims. Its a vaccum engine and runs off a slightly different principle. And yeah , vaccum 'flame licker' engines are basically novelties
Ever think of changing to a water jacketed cylinder with a steam relief stack? Bet it would run as long as it had water to cool the hot gas, and fuel for the flame.
I really like flame licker engines. I have a flam licker engine kit "made in germany" that is a lovely learning tool - but very temperamental as I have to adjust it every single time I want to run it. That would be a great step up for me, as this engine looks why more robust.
Any reason that screw to the bottom right of the little bar that shifts up and down is partially unscrewed? I assume it was from working on the engine. Great job!
Could you use the engine to power something like a toy boat? Just for kicks. I've seen videos where an toy boat is powered by a homemade engine that uses thermal exchange. Thumpers or knockers something like that.
Treat your engines right, and they will work better than intended. Give em that caring treatment, fix em up nice if they are roughed up. Keep up maintenance. Give em the works.

I have heard that running this engine for long enough will cause it to stop working because of a weak vacuum. Do you think cooling this down with ice or something would keep the chamber colder to the point where it would significantly increase the force of the vacuum, and therefore, rpm?
Thanks for the video, I was seriously looking at one of these because of the center crank & twin flywheels, its a shame the flywheels aren't true & you had to work on a very rough slide valve area, for the price...i think i'll just stay with a PMR #3 solar engine, they seem to run much easier & better.
When you hit the piston directly in the end, it caused it to over heat and expand too much causing friction between the piston walls and cylinder walls. I would not suggest doing this in the future as it can cause significant damage to the engine.
I noticed that you re-installed the valve cover (top of head) 180 degrees around as the slit(?) in the valve cover is to the bottom instead of top, in your re-assembled machine. Any particular reason for this, and what is the point in the slit anyhow?
This engine type has no commercial use. The best way to use it is as an educational toy. For a combustion engine, the mode of operation is super simple an easy to observe.
Could you use a Fresno lens to make that thing run with free energy from the sun put some Strong magnets on the flywheel and make some electricity with coils
how much torque do those sorts of things put out? i can see that they have a decent amount of speed, but everything looks preetty frictionless, so there isnt much resistance. could you run something off one of them, or are they just cool novelties?

Stirling engines and all external combustion engines do offer up torque, not as much as an internal combustion engine but it can and has been harnessed effectively
DumpYourTelevision and internal combustion engines also need a push. This engine is not that powerful, but is simple and if you make bigger ones , they will produce some power..... There are internal combustion engines with less power if one of these were of the same size....
It's funny how the machining work looks absolutely perfect in the pictures, but once it starts moving you start thinking "now where the hell did they go so terribly wrong?"
If you pit grooves on the piston, like you have on the cylinder casing, but smaller, you'll reduce the friction and also improve the seal slightly, dont ask my to explain the science behind it. Although it does work better with liquids and it's how a hydrolic valve piston seals itself it's going to help. because you cant get a piston ring and lubrication system that small.

Car engines run off heated air expansion, they just make the air expand a lot more by mixing fuel into it and then burning it.

No, it's too heavy and vacuum engines are only 5% efficient and a car engine is 40% efficient so not enough power.
