So for the best fuel economy, the glass bulb on the hot side should be contained within an aluminum sleeve, which captures more heat from the flame. And the other side should be water cooled.

That's quite true if you're trying to put a working load on them for sure. Though these little guys are mostly meant for show, so as long as it has enough of a differential to self-sustain, it does the job. StirlingKit does sell jacketed engines as well if you want the extra power. not to mention a few mini ICE engines at last check.
I have the first levitating one, but something strange happens when filmed through my Samsung phone in that the engine appears twisted when played bk !! I think its a syncing problem, but enjoyable anyway !

By the way, back in the 1950's these large engines were being used is some rural areas of Texas where I grew up to provided electrical power to small farming communities around East Texas, my uncle use to maintain one.

A resonant standing soundwave inside the the cylinder with the hot metal filinings causes the air to move between the filing (hot) and the piston end (cold) thus playing the role of the displacer. It is not a very efficient displacer, but it works.
be interesting to try make stirling engine test tube & old Hdd parts then run it with a small 5vlt elect motor = vlts something to do . 1 thing leads to another idea
you mean using it as a generator? People have. They're not particularly efficient, so you can't generate much. But they'll light up a small LED alright. there are other things you can do to squeeze more power out of them (metal hot side, liquid cooled cold side, multiple hot ends, ect) too.
Ringbom os definitely my favorite as it is the easiest to under stand just by watching fro different angles Edit: If I where to make an RC that ran on a stirling engine with momentum sustainability so if the fire burns out I have time to get it to pit stop by using remaining momentum to use to try to reignite and add fuel/burnable object I would use the second one its really nice
Oh, I've got a Stirling engine from them. Unfortunately the plastic bottle they include has a fatal flaw. The nozzle is made from a plastic that lacks elasticity and is prone to cracking. Guess how I found out. Don't trust the plastic bottle, bu their engines are good quality.

They both have what is basically steel wool, one is finer than the other. I do not understand the principle of these engine ( maybe someone can comment) my thought is it is to retain the heat at that end of the tube.
Think the steel wool is to increase the surface area in side the tube. So you heat the out side of the tube witch heats the steel wool then it transfer to the air next to it. Also keeps the heat at that end of the tube and keeps it away from the piston.
Being nice to look at/mechanical artpiece is why they where designed, basically. You can make a Stirling do a bit of work/more powerful (metal hot side to soak in more heat, liquid cool the cold side so it sheds as much heat as it can, multiple pistons, ect), but you don't see as much moving around when you do.

i may inform you that the third engine has a groove on the wheel to wich the piston is attached that you could use to run a rubber ring or something else with to power a small generator.
They seem to run just fine out of the box. And they do require reasonably precise machining to work well. I have seen worse desk engines sold for more at the very least. Hell, most of the high temp engines are less than $100, and the lathe I'd need to make one of those flywheels is like $400 not counting bits.
Why every DIY channel ends as "unboxing channel" and pure advertisement? Where is your own creativity and skills? What can we learn from ... unboxing garbage?
I include the occasional promotion as it makes it worthwhile spending all the time I do making regular videos. I never ask for viewers to subscribe or make a patreon donation. These engines are superb, not garbage.

But if you make it yourself, if you have to think about every detail, materials, tolerances... then it never turns to garbage. Because is becomes part of your life. Am I correct? And this is the difference between your early videos and todays "unboxing" videos. It does not matter, how great are theses gadgets, you are promoting, it is ... garbage. But still there is huge difference between just to buy it, or put all your creativity, time, wisdom, knowledge... to the build. And the same if I see Mayforboy working on lathe, using his tricks and tips, I can learn them and use them on my mini lathe later too. Not true, large versions were used to pump water from wells, power machinery, and generate electricity, etc..
I think the French use Stirling engine in a submarine!

They do, they are called solar panels. Why have the inefficiencies of a rotating motor in there, just take the power from the panels directly.

You can buy many Stirling engines with a pulley for doing mechanical work, & many have a built on generator to operate small LED lights.
