not really, Apple's brand is based on simple and elegant design, and when you add too much configuration that is lost, even if they organize it very well. There are psychological studies about how there is a sweet spot for options, 4, and beyond that people start to feel anxiety, stress, overwhelmed. So if you look back to software from the 90s it was overloaded with buttons and options, every company was making their "bar" for the browser, and quickly became spamware, because it was too much for users. Hi, this is pretty much exactly what SundSource is made for. When it is installed and open, go to the menu bar, there, open the SoundSource interface. In the lower left corner of the app, you will find a "Add Favorites" button where you will be able to add the applications you would like to change the volume for. And voila, you can change the volume of Zoom and others.

I had a question about this that I was hoping to get your advice on. I think I might be asking something that your video already covered but I just wanted to double check to make sure I understand. What I want is to get only one application audio (such as OBS or Zoom) to output to the headphone jack and not have any other audio sources go there. I suppose all other audio sources would either go to the macbook speakers or be muted entirely. Does this sound possible to do with this software? I know your video covers directing an audio source to a device (such as headphone jack) but I want to make sure you can also block all other audio sources from going out to that same device. It's for a church setup (trying to merge in person service with live-streaming service) and it's been a real struggle to try and solve some audio feedback issues we've been having and I was hoping this software could help out with it. Thanks for your thorough explanation of the software. It shows great promise and will be testing it out as soon as I'm able to.
Hi, generally what you are asking may be possible with SoundSource. When you send for example Quick Time Player to the headphone jack but select the MacBook Internal Speakers as your default than you'd get what you are asking. However, for the use case in live streaming and routing audio much more powerfully I would recommend checking out Loopback which is also made by Rogue Amoeba at: crsp.li/Loopback Loopback is an incredibly powerful audio routing software with which you can route audio between applications and additionally also route audio to separate outputs like the internal speakers and also the headphone jack. I think you'd be better served with Loopback.
Hi Chris. I need to speak over my keynote presentation. I mean, the audio from the keynote is going out and I want the audio from my usb microphone to be mixed and go out as well. Can I do that with this software ? Thanks
Love it, that you found your own answer already. You are absolutely on the right path. Loopback is your best bet and it's an incredibly solid program 👍.
I have a question. So the reason I was checking this out is that I'm curious about how to get Spotify to be in the background of my voice while I am speaking. Would this be able to redirect a music app to be the same audio output as my microphone. Sorry if this doesn't make sense. In my scenario, I am using a game capture software, but for some reason on mac they only allow one input for audio, and I am trying to find software I could just redirect my music to the same output as my microphone.
The goal you are trying to achieve is not possible with SoundSource. However, Rogue Amoeba (makers of SoundSource) also have another app called Loopback (crsp.li/Loopback) and that is exactly what you'll need to be able to do what you are describing. This program is super easy to setup and I will make a video about in the next few weeks. If that program is out of your price range, you may be able to do something similar with BlackHole (github.com/ExistentialAudio/BlackHole) but I am not sure if it actually would work for this purpose. Hope that helps 🌸.
trying to use it just as you showed but somehow it does not work. So I change balance left to right - which must be clearly hearable but it is showing no changes. What could be wrong? Volume controller is working though
Thank you for the great intro and review! The app looks super cool! I have the challenge at the moment to output sound to my airpods, but use my usb mic as an input. For some strange reason it does not work with the standard macos sound settings. The airpods always switch to their microphone or i dont hear anything via them when I actually manage to activate the usb mic. Do you have any experiences with that specific use case? I will try soundsource nevertheless, its one of those apps, which you dont know you needed until you have it ;) thanks!
Translation of the question (response below): > To be honest, I don’t understand what the fundamental difference is between SoundSource and loopback and if I have SoundSource, do I need loopback? Response: The easiest way to thin about this is that Loopback is an audio Routing program where you can make sound go from one program to another and mix different sound sources together as well. SoundSource on the other hand is mostly just making sound come out of certain speakers in different volumes. So, you can't really route stuff to other programs with SoundSource. SoundSource is for convenience in daily life. Loopback is for streamers, audio recordings, or radio show producers and the like.
Thanks for another interesting tool review Chris👍 can this do the following? To send a music signal simultaneously through two ports (let’s say headphone output and a USB C) where one is low pass filtered and the other is high pass filtered?
I don’t think so - you can reroute sound but not into multiple outputs. To achieve this you’d need Loopback by the same company. However, inside loopback you can not add effects. For that you’d have to use Audio Hijack. I am using this combination of tools for a few use-cases and maybe I’ll do a video about that sometime as well.
@@ChrisSpiegl thanks for the feedback Chris. @@hireality don’t think that’s possible. And it makes no sense to try and setup something with Loopback and Audio Hijack at that point because a) you probably don’t get the level of quality compared to that device and b) the device costs basically the same as all these pieces of software combined. 😅
What about picking specific input/output settings for a particular application that doesn't allow you to physically go into settings to pick them yourself? For instance: In my Mac I downloaded the Playstation remote play application which allows me to play the Playstation remotely on my Mac but the app itself doesn't allow me to go into settings and pick my own input/output.
The Soundsource app does provide options for each individual app that is currently producing audio output. You can individually change the volume and also the output that the app should be routed to. I can't confirm this for the playstation remote but for Chrome and similar programs I have used it and it worked.
bruh 50$ is insane though. i m all for paying for my software but I just wanna control basic audio settings. like this amount of money is comparable to some of my professional lvl apps like Clip studio paint, affinity designer or Procreat. not paying that for a feature that should be standard to begin with. in comparison to these pro apps provides a very limited service. feels like a ripoff 10$-20$ would still be expensive but more justifiable.
The features should be standard… but that's on apple, not on RogueAmoeba. I agree that the price is a bit steep for a utility application. However, I would not want to miss it in my daily life. It's been an incredible companion over the years, getting updated, and working flawlessly for all kinds of useful workflows and quality of life improvements (like denoising TH-cam videos live by using VST plugins). I have not looked in a while, but there are some alternatives which claim to do similar things in the Open-Source world. But most suffer the problem of not having funding to fix bugs over years and years. Which is why we pay companies like RogueAmoeba for their continued support and development.
Not sure what you're specifically asking about. This tool can do a lot of things and one of them is change the volume of your system as well as individual apps.
You can take a look at: th-cam.com/video/v2Jn9V4ovHk/w-d-xo.html The video is a bit outdated, but gives an overview of the application. You can then check out the github page or website linked in the description of said video.
Quality software costs money and SoundSource is one of the best in this line. And with that, a thought I constantly have to think about myself: if you take 2 hours to compile your own app… that means your own time is worth about $20 an hour. I know how sometimes it feels like we can just "hack some solution for free"… but at the end it actually costs us more than if we just buy the solution from someone who has done it already.

Apple is right to disable volume controls. They are trying to prevent the situation where users are hunting around for why they can't hear sound, adjusting the keyboard volume and blaming the poor experience on their Mac when they still can't hear anything. They have been working on direct adjustment of monitor volume over the HDMI data interface but not all monitors support this, which is not Apple's fault (and there is probably a hidden option to enable it again). They have some very smart people working for Apple, maybe consider that before criticising them.
Disabling volume controls is not the solution. Users should have the ability to adjust the volume on their device as they see fit, especially since it's a basic feature that has been available on computers for decades, just because Apple has "very smart people," it doesn't mean they are always right.

@@ChrisSpiegl thank you for the advice!
trying to use it just as you showed but somehow it does not work. So I change balance left to right - which must be clearly hearable but it is showing no changes. What could be wrong? Volume controller is working though
Maybe you need a system restart? Otherwise please contact the support team of RogueAmoeba.
Glad to hear you liked the video.
I have not had that issue you are describing. I can use my AirPods (original and 3rd gen) fine with a different mic.
@@ChrisSpiegl Thanks for the quick reply! That sounds promising. I will test that tomorrow with Soundsource ;) cheers!
Is there an application for Windows you would recommend?
What exactly are you trying to do? I don't use Windows, but maybe I have an idea.
честно говоря не понял в чем принципиальная разница SoundSource и loopback и если у меня есть SoundSource нужен ли мне loopback ?
Translation of the question (response below):
> To be honest, I don’t understand what the fundamental difference is between SoundSource and loopback and if I have SoundSource, do I need loopback?
Response:
The easiest way to thin about this is that Loopback is an audio Routing program where you can make sound go from one program to another and mix different sound sources together as well.
SoundSource on the other hand is mostly just making sound come out of certain speakers in different volumes. So, you can't really route stuff to other programs with SoundSource.
SoundSource is for convenience in daily life.
Loopback is for streamers, audio recordings, or radio show producers and the like.
@@ChrisSpiegl спасибо!)
How do I uninstall it?
Rogue Amoeba has a help page for that: rogueamoeba.com/support/knowledgebase/?showArticle=ACE-Uninstall&product=SoundSource
this is the reason i go back to linux and give my 3 days old macbook air m1 back
Thanks for another interesting tool review Chris👍 can this do the following? To send a music signal simultaneously through two ports (let’s say headphone output and a USB C) where one is low pass filtered and the other is high pass filtered?
I don’t think so - you can reroute sound but not into multiple outputs. To achieve this you’d need Loopback by the same company. However, inside loopback you can not add effects. For that you’d have to use Audio Hijack.
I am using this combination of tools for a few use-cases and maybe I’ll do a video about that sometime as well.
@@ChrisSpiegl thanks for the feedback Chris. I was essentially wondering if it could do the functionality of the miniDSP 2x4 HD (link below) which is a versatile little machine and quite popular among the audiophile and home cinema community. Looking forward to your related reviews👍 www.minidsp.com/products/minidsp-in-a-box/minidsp-2x4-hd
@@hireality don’t think that’s possible. And it makes no sense to try and setup something with Loopback and Audio Hijack at that point because a) you probably don’t get the level of quality compared to that device and b) the device costs basically the same as all these pieces of software combined. 😅
@@ChrisSpiegl you are absolutely right Chris, correct assessment. Keep up the great work👍
What about picking specific input/output settings for a particular application that doesn't allow you to physically go into settings to pick them yourself? For instance: In my Mac I downloaded the Playstation remote play application which allows me to play the Playstation remotely on my Mac but the app itself doesn't allow me to go into settings and pick my own input/output.
The Soundsource app does provide options for each individual app that is currently producing audio output. You can individually change the volume and also the output that the app should be routed to.
I can't confirm this for the playstation remote but for Chrome and similar programs I have used it and it worked.
do you have a discount code for this app?? thanks
Sorry, I don't have one for this app. If I get one at some point, I will put it on the page: crsp.li/SoundSource
@@ChrisSpiegl thanks anyway
@@ChrisSpiegl I will use that link to give some commission :)
@@ChrisSpiegl done! now just shall enjoy the app... thanks
@@joasegovia9427 I think with Rogue Amoeba, I don't make any commission. But it's easier for me to link this way 👍.
Para Windows?
bruh 50$ is insane though. i m all for paying for my software but I just wanna control basic audio settings. like this amount of money is comparable to some of my professional lvl apps like Clip studio paint, affinity designer or Procreat. not paying that for a feature that should be standard to begin with.
in comparison to these pro apps provides a very limited service. feels like a ripoff
10$-20$ would still be expensive but more justifiable.
Help me On Mac Ventura I can't find the "Allow" option in "security and privacy" to enable this app.
Please talk to the Rogue Amoeba support for this.
Can you usse it to change sound level for external audio interfaces?
Not sure what you're specifically asking about. This tool can do a lot of things and one of them is change the volume of your system as well as individual apps.
is there any similar app to this but for free?
You can take a look at: th-cam.com/video/v2Jn9V4ovHk/w-d-xo.html
The video is a bit outdated, but gives an overview of the application. You can then check out the github page or website linked in the description of said video.
Soundsource is $40. I just want a very simple global equalizer. Fine. I'll compile my own app.
Where do you have all these effects from?
I use them in my everyday work with Podcast editing and more.
@@ChrisSpiegl how can i get these effects?
@@freakern These are the main effects companies I use effects from:
iZotopes: crsp.li/iZotope (De-Noise, and many other cleanup features)
FabFilter: crsp.li/FabFilter (EQ, Limiter, Compressor, etc.)
YouLean: crsp.li/Youlean (Loudness Metering)
Some others are random free plugins I have downloaded over the years.
Dare I ask if you guys are still able to answer a related question ! .
If you have questions about the software, I'd recommend reaching out to the team at Rogue Amoeba… if you have other questions, you can join my Telegram group: crsp.li/tgg
Does it support Discord individual volumes control???
Not sure what specifically you mean? SoundSource can make the general sound coming from Discord louder or less loud.
@@ChrisSpiegl thanks
beautiful program but the price is outrageous.
It costs 50usd :(
That is correct, but to some it is worth it.
Alternatives are available, but not with this level of features and quality.
I don't like the fact that we need to downgrade security to get this working.
What do you mean? I have a new installation and I did not have to "downgrade security" in any way.
@@ChrisSpiegl I mean this. i.imgur.com/pTpV3A6.png
@@ChrisSpiegl I mean this. i.imgur.com/pTpV3A6.png "Reduced Security" sounds a little drastic and misleading to me. Is it safe?
