      A lot of disasters befall experienced people who get complacent and fail to prepare for anything other than what they planned for occurring. Proper planning is a balancing act between being prepared and being overburdened. A lot of people stop carrying too much stuff, e.g. a medical kit, because they haven't had to use it much and get caught up in ultralight mentality and overconfidence in their ability. I haven't had to use my seatbelt in a while but I always wear it. The ol "everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face" addage applies to the outdoors.

    Yes...yes...YYYES... Once again such a great tip for bushcrafting... Since I've seen so many dudes breaking theyre knives batoning wood, thinking that a thicker knife shall stand the vibrations of the wood or stone hammering, and with a lack of knowledge that some metals do not stand the vibrations between the tuked blade in the log and the hand grip by haveing to tight, and so it gets broken in the weakest point... That this videi tip it's GEAT... Thanks Immler

    I haven't tried this yet but have you considered starting your split with the saw. Just cut a notch in the wood and use the wedge to split it. I'll have to try it myself now but if it does work it could be a much better option than trying to baton with a slip joint.

    • @danmorgan3685
      @danmorgan3685 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I tried it and it didn't work. Their was no crack in the wood for the wedge to "chase". I'll try again but it's not too promising.

    • @batswithsass3754
      @batswithsass3754 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've used it for 6 in logs and it works fine for me, you just have to make the wedge very thick at the top and taper very fast at the bottom. If you do a traditional wedge thats fairly slender the whole way it won't split that well.

    Was just wondering how you were doing yesterday! Great to see another useful video. The wedge is a very old, yet very powerful and versatile tool. Take care.

    Looking at the offset wedge and thinking 'crank out a few dozen more of these and we've got the makings of a wooden jet turbine engine'. Then I put down my drink.

    I love your videos...you are top-notch...but I have to ask...I like the hammer...but why wasn't it chamfered
    in the same manner and for the same reason as the wedges???

    • @FelixImmler
      @FelixImmler  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It hould be chamfered..you are right!

    You have probably heard this already but just in case as a tip! At 1:11 you hammer the wedge in so that it ia pushing the wood fibres of the mallet head apart, wanting to split the head. By placing the wedge so that it is 90 degrees offset from the grain direction of the mallet head, it is much stronger!
