I stumbled into a surplus US army wool blanket a few years ago. I believe it was probably from the 60’s to 80’s, but not sure. You could sand wood with the thing, but it’s warm and actually treated to be highly water resistant. Blew me away when the kids spilt soda on it and it just rolled off. Man I wish I bought a few

Turned out petty good. My self I would have done a folded seam around the edges to give it more strength from freying and too make it a bit more ridge around the the edges. Also whip stitch the button holes to keep them from freying also. Wool is made up of fine hairs and they will frey if not reenforced. A bias would have reenforced the side seams as well. These little extras would make it last much longer from wear.

There's a few more refinements that could be made that, I'm sure, our man Felix is aware of too but my understanding of the video was minimalist type of build. We used the largest hoodie I have for a pattern to make mine and made it slightly larger for outerwear. The seams are serged to prevent fraying.

That was another great video. I have seen Lonnie on the Far North Bushcraft and Survival channel make one of these, except he used a sewing machine, so that means your DYI is much different, since it just uses a SAK and a blanket. Anyone who wanted to try this, but didn't want to risk ruining a wool blanket, which is quite costly, even as a military surplus item, could experiment with one of those cheap spun polyester micro fiber fleece throws that are available in almost any big box store. They have a spongy, thick consistency that is very close to a wool blanket that doesn't unravel when cut and are very inexpensive at the end of the winter season, I think it would provide some experience before diving in on a wool one. By the way Felix, you could have just pinned your hood together at the stitch line rather than the cut line and with a few more toothpicks you would be better able to judge how the hood would fit your head. You made it work, but seamstresses usually pin and try rather than sew and hope. That is a beautiful place to do your projects. I'm jealous.

For all the people in the U.S. who like to wear hoodies for casual or outdoor wear, this is fantastic. Now I need to take some of the survival blankets I have from the surplus stores and make myself one. My only modifications would be the following:
Long sleeves with wider cuffs for layering reasons, complete with tie off toggles so when you roll the sleeves up you can make it into a short sleeve version. The cuffs would also have draw string synches to help keep heat in when not rolled up.
Not sewing all the way down on the main body and leaving about 3 to 5 inches for mobility reasons around the hip area.
Adding a draw string synch for the hood, incorporating a face mask on a toggle on the inside to use for windy/ cold situations.
Using the extra bits left over for making pockets, adding shoulder padding or a mantle to aid in extra weather protection, and belt loops for if you need to belt up the bottom for heat retention.
Pocket toggles. Because losing your gear during a hike while the weather is inclimate sucks.

Love it. Put a slit or start stitching a little higher to have A little more mobility below the waist. Love the design in the simplicity of making it.
