It's tough for drivers to deny service, even if they think they probably should. They may have driven miles to get to the pick up spot and if they decide not to take the ride, they get no pay.
I used to drive and the worst thing was when you'd get to the pick up point and the rider would have a small child with no baby seat. It would put you in the position of leaving a young mother stranded and no pay for you, or you break the law, putting yourself at great financial risk should something happen.
This happened to me several times and I would always refuse service, leading to an angry rider.
Sometimes these situations are no win, unfortunately.

For me, I always thought it was weird that when I got into Uber's they would just say: "Are you Patrick?", and I'd just say "yep", an they were cool with that. Me saying yep proves... absolutely nothing. They've got the whole pin system now which makes sense, but it was crazy how little verification there's been historically.
I never really felt unsafe getting into an Uber because like you said, I just have to check the license plate and then I know that you're the right person.

I'm a young(isn, lol....eh, I'm getting old) woman living in a very large city, and I've taken a lot of Ubers (not even just in the country where I live, but other places too - and yes, all over the United States). I have NEVER spoken to a cab driver like that. Ever. In fact, I always make an effort to be nice and friendly.
It's not that hard. I manage to do it even though I actually was assaulted by someone years ago (not an Uber driver though), and even with the trauma from that experience, I've still never found it unnecessary to be rudely suspicious of my Uber driver.
If you're that worried about being kidnapped or assaulted, just make sure that the guy matches his picture, and that his car is the same make as the one your driver is supposed to have. The Uber app gives you a description of your driver's car, their name, and their photo. A potential attacker isn't going to match all these details.
That being said, I don't think the woman was a bad person - she was just following trends, and I think she realised what she did wrong what you pointed it out to her. We all make mistakes. What matters is how we react when we realise that we're in the wrong, and she reacted fairly and maturely.

Agree, I think the friend was being rude and a "Karen" but they also seem to be drinking by how the friend was slurring her words. I don't think they should be talked to that way by a driver for a company that specifically gives people rides. And as she says in the car, customers are told to ask the driver if they know their name. Both the driver and passenger were initially rude to each other, in my opinion, but the driver should've been a little more courteous no matter what. He is providing a service to paying customers. Asking if he knows her name isn't that rude and if I was spoken to by an Uber driver that way, I would've cancelled and asked for another driver or go with another company.
