Great channel, subscribed. I own both C70 and R5C. I love them both...for now. They have shortcomings so when a better deal comes out I'll upgrade for sure. They are not the perfect camera we've been waiting for, but once you sign up with Canon most def you can expect that your next camera will miss crucial features too. Almost every modern camera can deliver professional products in the right hand. Comparing them is tricky, I believe many times people aim for a straight answer: 'Ok, so which one's better?' because they need to have that only one body, that investment that lasts for sure for 5 years or so. To be honest from a filmmaking point of view it is kind of funny. There is no such camera, there never was, and will never be. Every gig requires different features. IBIS, AF, small body size, exposure tools, high megapixel, SDI, timecode, XLR, full HDMi, viewfinder, external monitor...you won't need them all the time, and certain things you can live without while other shooter find the lack of those features dealbreaker. So it always depends WHAT IS IT YOU INTEND USING IT FOR? If you still want all features in one body it'll cost more money and it'll increase the size of your camera. No way around this. This is a continuous journey. 5 years ago nobody asked 120 f/s in 4K or 6K RAW while today people find these features more and more minimum requirement. So it's a constant state of existence: buying a new model to upgrade to 'new standards'. Right now the C70 has the edge over the R5C when it comes to 1. small RAW file sizes on cheap SD cards, 2. XLR for interviews, 3. built in NDs that dont require extra mounts or screw-on filters, 4. bigger LCD which is almost never gets mentioned while we all need to frame the image right...right? 5. full HDMi and 6. battery life which is super crucial if you are a one-man band. All of this already in the body!!! No extra tool needed! No extra mounts! So for a run and gun doc style or more than an hour long shoot right out of the box the c70 is unbeatable in this price range in the Canon ecosystem. In the same time when I need to grab quick high quality B-rolls, shoot somewhere where you can't or not allowed, need to travel and jump out of the car to grab a shot, taking a tiny camera out of your bag with all the exposure tools C70 has, taking industry standards high quality photos with the very same small body, with with a RF-EF VND mount the R5C is clearly a better choice. Even if I have to have 2-3 extra tiny, cheap batteries with me. That is still hours of footage!!! Small size is the R5C's best feature. I'd rather not ever rig up the R5C because that's the best feature of it, but on interview sessions rigging it up for B-cam is super easy. The mid-option is a simple PD charger on the body. Not the FXLion, no, a simple PD bank. Quick shots in high quality with the right codec. 5D mark IV, EOS R, EOS R5...none of them had the 4K Log footage xf-avc or 6K RAW LT without overheating...so the R5C is clearly a step-up. And to be clear no it's not ok that it costs $4800, no it's not ok that the cinema OS drains battery, no it's not ok that it has micro HDMi. We don't have to buy it. Free choice. Canon. Love and Hate. Thx again for the great review.

The R5 comes so close to the perfect hybrid camera! The omission of Clog2 is the biggest miss with this camera and ultimately led me to cancel my pre-order. Canon is hilarious when they explain why it isn't in there because the sensor isn't rated for that much DR, but at the same time will say, "but you can access Clog2 in raw." Aside from that and battery life, this camera ticks SO many boxes. Great video dude!

Dang that is so expensive... I would say tho, I think this is the first true hybrid camera in that it feels like buying two cameras at the same time. When I was trying to decide between Sony A7siii and Canon r5, I ended up going with canon because I needed a photography camera too. I told myself if I got the a7siii I would also need to eventually buy another camera for photo. In THAT specific world, for me as a 50/50 user, it was "cheaper" to go for the r5. If we think in terms of r5c being a pro photo and cinema, then it is "cheap", but that's it! hahaha. With that said... would like to upgrade to r5c one day. Not because its way better the r5, but the video image almost looks as magical as c70! the c70 magic is real

Great points Mike! Yes, if you need pro photo and video then the R5C is amazing and is essentially two cameras in one. And yes, the C70 sensor is magic.

Great video Josh! I mainly film myself, and therefore need to control the camera remotely. This is very easy with my Sony A7IV. I connect with a monitor app on my mobile, and with that I can check exposure, white balance, and change aperture and iso to my liking. Is there any way of doing this with the R5C?

Hi Josh, enjoyed this vid too. The fan thing put me off a bit also, glad it's not just my camera. I think the camera should be able to run without the fan when shooting in certain formats. If the R5 can shoot at 24 fps in IPB without ever overheating, then they could allow for a fan-less option here too so you could save on battery when shooting vlogs and stuff and essentially it'd operate like an R5. By the way, did you sell it?

I had the R5C for 4 days on loan from canon to test…
Being an r5 user i was super curious to see the comparison from the r5 to the r5c.
All things aside with the obv quirks that everyone is talking about. I ran in to two issues that made me pause on purchasing the r5c
    • there is no 1.6x anamorphic de-squeeze. Hopefully it comes with a software release.
    • a big issue I had with the camera while using the S&F function. My workflow consists of 24/48/120fps so the fact the S&F was incorporated to access those frame rates was a big deal to me. When using an atomos ninja v and s&f, the signal that was being received by the ninja from the camera kept defaulting to 4K60. I couldn’t resolve the issue in the time I had but tried everything both on the camera and the recorder. When s&f was off it worked fine.
    • lastly the autofocus on the camera side of the r5c should have been mirrored on the cinema side. When they do that I’d consider purchasing.
For now I’ll be watching the software updates.
    Great video… just sub’d.

The battery life is disappointing but a simple external battery solves it. I got the Nano One and can shoot most of the day without swapping batteries and it's very easy to mount the battery to the camera with a simple cage. Works USB or via the DTap. When I got the camera I heard the fan noise you mentioned but you can only hear it when you put your ear up to it. I luckily bought the camera before the price jump.

Canon will either give you a video camera OR a photography camera. With this camera (and the 4-5k price tag) you get a Frankenstein that can't really be taken seriously on a set for either. I've learned-the hard way, that DP's will ask you what system do you have (Canon, Sony, Red, etc) and if you mention Canon for a video gig, YOU MUST have C log 2. It doesn't matter if you are applying for a secondary camera job or b roll or "behind the scenes" footage. All Log footage must be the same if you want to gain returning industry clients. You are better off with a Sony with S log color science on a Canon set than a Canon camera with C log 3! It shows your level. They wont say it, but the camera world is one of snobs and purists. I'll just rent my bodies from Canon. Editors don't like mismatched footage either.

Hey Josh you hit it on the head... As you know I was reviewing several cameras, finding a more run-n-gun camera for my Canon Cinema EOS C70 and Canon EOS R3 setup... Reviewed the gh6, looked at the X-H2S, the Canon EOS R6, R7, Panasonic S1h, and the R5C Hard -- but the negatives you listed is why I didn't get it... It just isn';t a run-n-gun camera. It requires rigging up. And by the same you are done you spent as much as a Canon C70 or more and you have a more junky pieced together, larger camera.... trust me though, I could have. It was in stock here at my camera shop, set aside. ready to go a couple weeks ago.
However, horrible battery life, no IBIS, the big Canon Lenses, the expensive lenses, the limited Lens focal lengths.... all huge negatives. So I passed and opted for the Sony Alpha Cinema FX3... its just a way better pick-up-and-go all on fronts.
Now I am looking at pairing it with an A1, which will be my next camera so I'll have a large setup c70. and R3 and then a small setup the fx3 and A1.
That said, I thought you mentioned you sold the FX3 and didn't have it anymore?
Also here is my V2.0 petition to FX3 at Change.Org. it's been making the rounds through the camera groups, Sony Alpha Twitter, Sony ProSupport, and Sony's Alpha team have all been contacted about it.
Shamless plug, but anyone reading this, please sign and spread the word!

Your assessment is spot on. I've had my R5C since launch and I couldn't agree more. The poor battery life when switched to video is no joke, and the camera pretty much sucks the same power whether recording or not so the already poor record time when on internal power can become virtually unusable if spending serveral minutes in "standby", configuring settings, etc. That said, for somebody who needs/wants a small lightweight hybrid camera where video and stills are equally important, the R5C currently has no equal. Depending on plans, I'll sometimes pack a small USB PD brick, which still beats carrying two cameras. IMO, the R5C loses it's appeal if needing to rig it out -- I can't image shooting photos on a rigged out R5C and IMO better off with something like a C70, Komodo, etc, if just for video. But that's just me :- ) Whatever the case, thanks for the no nonsense down earth reviews and please keep up the great work! Subscribed.

Hey Josh, good thoughts and review. I had the R5 and it heated up in photo mode shooting my daughters Volleyball game in a very hot Texas gym. Nope. It took great shots and photos but I'm a guy that gets to the airport really early so I don't stress. It was not a pro camera. I happily paid the extra and dealt with the wait for the R5c just for video menu (C70) and fan alone. Everything else are bonuses. I love this camera. I was thinking about trading a C70 for another R5c but I found out I'm gonna be shooting a weekly show featuring an exMMA legend. So, I'm gonna keep the C70's as A/B and the R5c as an everything else camera. I figured out a really cool way to shoot on a Gimbal with the R5c that I haven't seen yet.

Since you can record video in photo mode, when you hit the record button in photo mode, it defaults to the C3 setting. I wonder if you had that C3 setting saved to a format that overheats? Good review. As someone who shoots on a Bmpcc 6K and RED Epic the battery life isn't a big deal cause I am used to rigging cameras up. Clog2 and Clog3 are identical from middle gray and up so not having Clog2 is fine with me. Don't care for ibis or autofocus on the video side. Although not having ibis on the photo side is a con for me because I like doing street photography at night. That being said as time goes on, more and more of these cameras will have all these advance tech that it basically does all the work for you and you'll have a bunch of people that dont know what they are doing.

I'm surprised that you mentioned about the fan noise, which all other R5C users didn't mind. Coming from Lumix S1H, the fan from R5C is annoyingly noisy to me. What's surprising is that the fan runs pretty noisy even without shooting, as compared to S1H which really manages the fan speed well, which I've only heard the latter running it only when shooting in open gate mode for too long.

Your summary brings up a good point. As the amount of camera gear l own (camera bodies, lens, tripods, gimbal, rigging and accessories) what l purchase changes.
You have dedicated cinema cameras, dedicated smaller, more nimble cameras etc so of course a camera that does everything well (like the R5C) but not as good as specialized cameras used mainly for one thing will before better in their specialty. Essentially you have a full size snap on tool cabinet of tools so the likelihood of someone like that preferring to use a Cresent wrench is not so great.

Hey, Josh! I really enjoy your channel especially because I also like to change things and try, my main camera is a komodo and it will probably stay that way for a long time, I had a7s3, s5 and now I'm testing for about a month R5c, and I have to say that on the one hand I'm surprised by how many options it offers, personally I don't shoot much so I don't appreciate the photo quality,
I specialize in shooting in the automotive field and lately I'm just comparing raw LT 6k s35 from r5c vs komdo 6k, at first glance very similar and usable but the size of the sub files in raw in 6k is very similar at the lowest quality and the R3D codec is a completely different universe than Canon cinema raw.
Another thing is that when you consider the minimal cost of using the r5c for full video (cage, v-mount battery, cards etc.) the price is very similar. I'm faced with the decision of whether I actually need it :)

I get you can shoot clog2 in raw but would be much more manageable to have the option for the other codecs. • @RayValdezPhotography

I am thinking that the cinema side software helps with the DR. I seems like canon might seperate its photo and cinema divisions and they handle image processing in their own ways. So they know how to squeeze DR differently. This camera has wide DR something that is never on a stills camera.

Good thoughts after a fair test time. I was fired up about getting the camera and now I've cooled a little on it. I'm still getting good mileage out of my C200 and mostly shoot video so not sure it the R5C is the right move. Still figuring it out. Thanks for your information.

Great review, and good explanations. That said, I love R5C image and for me that kind of supersedes everything. I've used it in a variety of situations, corp interviews, stationary cam for another angle on live dance with extreme lighting conditions, and I can say the images it produced were spectacular in different ways for each of the environments. Yes, there are definitely work arounds needed, but on a tripod those are easily achieved. I haven't used it on a gimbal yet because I've never rigged out a camera with external battery in that setting so that's gonna be a challenge when I eventually move in that direction, but I'm very happy with the image which ultimately is what I was looking for. It kind of sucks that canon hasn't made the perfect camera yet, but this is good enough that I'm willing to do the work to get it to where it needs to be.

As a dude fom the old skool days (Canon XL1) I appreciate everything u r saying and why it is important but I do fear we have a generation which is so gear focus and spoilt for choice that it has become the battle of the toys. There is more content on what gear to buy than how to use the gear. The rise of the channel that is picky about gear. This camera is not perfect, but honestly even if i was someone would take issues. And we have so much choice that it is actually killing the art. We cannot wait to find issues with small things and why it needed this or that. And everyone and their dog is on the bandwagon. Someone is bummed about no Clog 2, I have to go and see what their work looks like if they can be so picky. Another is worried it has 1 stop of DR below the C70 --- r u serious? I agree with ND filters but which one do you want Small camera or NDs?

If you could only have one for video, which would you take Canon C70, R5c or FX3?

    • @Josh_Sattin

I can only speak for myself since everyone's use case is different. As of right now, I would take the FX3 since I am mostly doing TH-cam stuff and I am in front of the camera. If I was behind the camera most days, I might chose the C70. They are all such great cameras. It really depends on what you are using the camera for and what lenses you need.

  • @AndreeMarkefors
    @AndreeMarkefors 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Not seeing the higher DR in the C70 that gets mentioned here and there. It almost seems like that camera's consolation price after the R5C got announced. The C70 has got a DGO sensor, so it feels like people "know" that "surely, it's better??" But I'm not seeing it, looking across a few reputable reviews.
And if someone would be able to show it to me, I'm sure it's almost on a theoretical level.
The R5C's biggest problem in my mind is the small size of the camera. Should have been a C70 body (with NDs), or at least an R3 'compact full size'.

I am still holding out that the battery issue will be resolved in a firmware update, it feels like this camera got rushed out and seeing some of the other cinema rumours, I think there is going to have to be a change to that side of the OS. If the R7c is real then I think it will have to.

This should have been the original R5. Smh. Kinks should have been worked two years ago. The fact that the battery is still not up to par at this stage is incredible. And they did not use the auto focus from the original R5. I love Canon but they cripple cameras - intentionally - to compel you to buy the next new crippled version of a camera a few months later. Such a disservice to their fanbase.
