I have a question. Why is it that Athens and their empire is so consistently depicted as blue, while Sparta and their empire is depicted as red? Why not the other way around?

It went surprisingly well. Persia got scared to even send their armies to Greece. They mostly sent money and diplomats after that. It’s more that pissing off a bunch of Greek Polis’ is dangerous even if you’re Greek.

10:27 this is essentially my favorite moment in history. "The final Athenian ship was still making its way home, pursued by the Peloponnesians, who were already singing the chants of victory. A merchant vessel happened to be lying at anchor in the deep water off Naupactus; it became the device that produced a stunning reversal. The lone Athenian ship, instead of racing for the protection of Naupactus, whirled three-quarters of a circle, using the anchored merchantman to protect its exposed side as it turned, rammed the leading pursuer, and sank it. The Peloponnesians, believing the battle was already over, now fell into complete disorder. Some ran aground in ignorance of the waters. Others, stunned by the sight, put their oars into the water to stop their ships and wait for the rest of the fleet- a terrible mistake, for it left them motionless und helpless before a moving enemy."

This lone Athenian ship Tokyo drifted around another ship and 270 no scoped the enemy. What a fucking legend. Completely tilted the Peloponnesians and made them ragequit.

John Henderson a forced democracy is, essencially, a dictatorship. US's role throughout the XX and at the beginning of the XXI was and has been similar to that of Athens forcing democracies all around. Though, a foreign puppet democracy is nothing but a dictatorship enforced by a greater power.

Rome was a Republic, not a democracy.
The Athenians actually were very good at land fighting. Thier problem was that they were bad at leading allied armies, whereas that was sparta’s greatest strength. So while Athenian soldiers could stand toe to toe with Spartans, the couldn’t keep thier allies from
Running off or attacking out of turn. The Spartans on the other hand had a long history of commanding alliances. And though the Spartans originally were no match for the Athenians at sea they eventually developed new sailing techniques that allowed them to outclass the Athenians at thier own game (at least in narrow waters)

Thanks for talking more about this! I was supposed to learn this stuff last year, but my teachers sort of forgot. So my geography teacher had to teach maps, climate, vegetation, the fall of the Soviet Union, government and economic systems, Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, and apartheid. She didn't get to spend much time on this, so thank you for making this video!

I've got to say - out of all *Blue*'s videos on the channel, this one is my favorite so far! Nicely organised and presented, it obviously took tons of work.
Of course, with such a broad subject, leaving several things out was inevitable (fingers crossed for part #2 ;)
A couple of things which I feel shouldn't be omitted:
1) 1st & 2nd Greek colonisation (very different from modern-era European colonialism, and very different from each other), including vaguely related subjects such as the (earlier) Dorian migration, Magna Graecia etc. Those movements of populations, besides explaining and showcasing the Greeks' reliance on maritime trade, had a tremendous overall impact (cultural, political, economic), and set the stage for many of the later classical-age events (several of which are mentioned in Blue's videos). Plus, it's quite amazing to hear how far-reaching the 2nd colonisation was: Spain, Egypt, the Black Sea. Marseilles, the oldest city in France, famously started life as a greek (Phocaean) colony.
2) The fascinating, slow march of the Athenian society towards radical democracy - Solon, Cleisthenes, Ephialtes, Pericles. Plus Peisistratus, who was a tyrant, but also a pretty cool guy.
3) Alexander _the Great_! (Blue, I know you dislike him for some reason, but he really was an incredible political and military genius - he rightfully earned this epithet).
Just a couple of ideas for future videos :D

With the rather abrupt, yet relatively satisfying, ending to the CW show Reign, I have many questions that have formed, and are still unanswered, regarding the significant historical events of Spain, England, and France, specifically pertaining to the time that Mary, Queen of Scots, moved to French court at age five, to the time of her death at age 44, as well as how accurate the show portrayed the time period. I hope I don't stand alone here as this is also the time that Elizabeth I of England brought on the Golden Age, as well as the Age of Exploration. Words could not say how happy a video like this would make me! Either way, however, you guys have amazing content, and it's great to see a community of people that share some of my interests! Keep up the great work guys! :)

Great video. To supplement it, there's a fantastic book called "The Hemlock Cup" by Oxford professor Dr. Bettany Hughes. It primarily revolves around the life of Socrates, but Hughes at length discusses the history of Athens, and furthermore, Greece. It's a great way to get a look into Ancient Greek culture and history (she discusses Megara, Potidiaea, Amphipolis, and so much more), as well as the life of one of the most famous Greek philosophers. Highly entertaining. I read it along with translating Plato's "Apologia". Great pairing. I highly recommend this book. :)

A whole video on "the anabasis" would be awesome! It's one of the greatest adventures ever in human history in my opinion. Supposedly the film "the warriors" is based on this expedition. Anyways, just a suggestion. I think there's enough material in that story for a full video.

It really is amazing that what would eventually evolve into most of what we consider Western culture came down to one final desperate battle on the ass end of Greece and was won with a bit of foresight from a single man and the badassery of one city who was disturbingly militaristic.

I have to say, jerk move or not, I am kind of impressed by the Athenians (from how I understood it) basically scamming their way into having an empire. That's some sneaky stuff.
