Wow Matt really gets iron man. He understands that another layer of Tony Stark’s PTSD is a lack of control. Tony always has to have control through plans and order HE agrees to. We know that comes into play later in other movies.
HonestHedgehog Life - I love Tony’s ark in terms of his leadership. Look at how he must control everything in Iron Man 1, gives Pepper control in 2, letting Cap lead in Avengers 1. Then later how he opens up to a certain protégé, his handling of a team of guardians, and probably so many more. Holden is right, greatest character arc.
He makes a super interesting point about Tony's anxiety being because he's realised he isn't in control all the time. Think about how that line of thinking would play into his decision making in Age of Ultron and Civil War.
SPOILERS - Don't read this Matt! Or anyone else that hasn't seen Age of Ultron! It absolutely does come into play but it's not really fully realized until Scarlet Witch makes him see all the Avengers dead so ya that was a very good pickup by Matt.

Warren Taylor yeah that’s why he was obsessively building so many suits in this movie, so he could try to regain a sense of control after seeing aliens invade earth. It’s like he said to Pepper “I’m a man in a can... so I come down here, I do what I know, I tinker.”
Not that surprising really considering that the mcu is on average better, and definitely more cohesive. I feel like the mcu movies are at worst ok, while Star Wars has the prequels. I know some people like them, but they're just hot garbage to me, and I say this as a life long fan. It is cool that he likes them though, and also kind of funny how Matt loves Iron Man while Holden stans for Cap.

@@joelhatswag7838 imho the prequels went from absolute garbage (TPM) to horseshit (AOTC) to average-good (ROTS), while the prequels went from average-good (TFA) to fucking awesome (TLJ) [YES. Last Jedi is my 2nd fav star wars movie, deal with it!] to bullcrap (TROS). So it's really hard to say wich saga i liked more. The one with a promising start or the one with a average good ending. I think i prefer the prequels...because TROS really gave me cancer.

Chewbacca mourning Leia is one of the most emotional moments in all of SW. I don't think 3PO should have gotten his memory back after being wiped. Would have made it carry more weight. The ending with Ben was stupid. So was the Palpatine twist. But eh. Still better than Jar Jar. Lol!
Actually Matt nailed it about Tony’s PTSD. Yes it’s the alien invasion and especially going through the wormhole that was the catalyst but it was the realization that things are so much larger and probably more dangerous than he realizes and can control, which intimidates him and causes him to try to hopelessly gain control and create suits for every situation, trying to get that control again, and only by letting go of this obsession of his can he overcome, or rather, learn to live with his PTSD. Of course, the fundamental thing that Tony can’t change about himself at this point is that he wants to save everyone and will do too much for it, which is why he acts the way he acts in Age of Ultron and Civil War, not to give too much spoilers. EDIT: Also if you guys take a break after Phase 2 you should watch Superman Returns

Winter Soldier is objectivly one of the best movies marvel has ever made. I don't see the time Matt isn't gonna like this. He is not into Sci-Fi and too much Fantasy. Winter Soldier is very grounded, dark and intruiging. Even I, who didn't like Cap in his first movie and Avengers love this movie.

Because if you know about pacing, story, themes and plot Winter Soldier is obviously way ahead most other MCU Movies. I like what he said about his PTSD coming from not having control. The reason he made so many suits in this movie is so he has a suit for any situation because he was so paranoid another force wouldn’t be too strong for him like in Avengers
Honestly with all the psychological stuff that Matt clearly loves I’d honestly love to see Matts thoughts on the batman Arkham games as the third has some really great insight into fears and the joker and batman relationship but so far I’m happy with how Matt has been with these movies here he thinks it’s decent not the best not the worst just great. Glad to see how open Matt has been with these movies it’s nice to see him enjoy the things I enjoy so thank you Holden Matt and Jenna for this experience in this series👍
Don't want to spoil anything, but you were dead on about Tony and control. He gets PTSD from the hole cuz he then realized the universe is much larger and there are threats he won't be able to address every time. This comes into play in later movies.
It’s so cool to see someone feel the same way about these characters as I do. Although I love both Cap and Tony, Tony has always been my favorite because I feel like his story arc is much more compelling than Cap’s. I started where Holden did with both of them, immediately loving Tony but taking a bit longer to warm up to Cap. So fun to see someone taking the same journey as I did. It’s almost like getting to do it all over again.
Movie recommendation- Arrival with Amy Adams and jeramy Renner (hawk eye) it’s slow but the impact of the story I think he would love. Not to crazy in action or colors or in your face. It’s one of my favorite movies !
Love how Matt is taking the side of Iron Man so early on. There is so much in store for you with his arc, you are seriously going to love what's coming up
I think it’s good that they went in to this movie with no prior trailer or comic book knowledge bc they didn’t know that the mandarin was supposed to be this major bad guy for iron man and everyone was let down. I went in with circumstances similar to Matt and Jenna’s and I loved this movie. It wasn’t until afterwards that I realized that people hated that twist. Great video!!
Agreed/disagreed on the twist. The Mandarin in the comic books is so over-the-top and insane & evil that it would have been very difficult to translate to the screen. This was much easier to swallow and comprehend - here it's not about the mustache twirling, it is about the money. I loved this twist in the movie, because it was hilarious and Ben Kingsley was great.
@@elimgarak1617 I actually completely agree too and I never really understood the criticism. I really enjoyed the way the movie handles the Mandarin, and the genuine feeling of surprise in the theatre was great.
As a movie it's a great twist. Though the reason everyone hated it was for two main reasons and one bonus reason. 1. It would be like Superman getting ready to fight lex Luther or Batman getting ready to fight the joker and then we find out that neither of those characters exist in this timeline and were creations of just some random nobody with frankly generic superpowers(at least for marvel). 2. The thought that were never gonna see the actual real mandarin fight iron-man. I mean the Mandarin is coming in Zhang chi, but it's not gonna feel the same without iron-man. I mean this is comics dieing is like a broken leg, but still. Bonus reason, the original version had the female scientist be the real mandarin and some people liked that more cause it would of given the MCU it's first real female villain but it wasn't done for executive and toy reasons.

This is one of my favorite MCU films and I'm really glad that Matt enjoyed it! Everything that Matt pointed out about Tony's mental health and the possible reasons for it's decline and problems are very plausible. I think that having a lack of control over certain situations (Tony seems to be very Type A, despite his sometimes nonchalant personality) is truly the driving force behind his decisions and fears in the future. Can't wait for the rest of Phase Two, great start!
Not necessarily unfairly, it is just that they put the blame in the wrong place. The movie has its problems, but none of them are directly related to the mandarin. It is just another Ironman movie with is overly complicated regarding the Villian...and I am talking about Killian here.
Gotta tell ya, your "Friends" way of looking at this films gives me an entire new way of looking at these films I already love. You have a good thing going here and I appreciate all the perspectives. They make you look at a film such as this in a whole new way. Keep up the great work.

Honestly, i agree. Especially when he comes back from the battle from Thanos and how he tells Cap that he "lost the kid"... seeing Tony completely just at the bottom. Well said
He recovers from it here, and then the subsequent movies just brought it back for no reason and never allowed him to grow past it, thus ruining his arc.
Its great to see the connections to the character arcs, a lot of fans seem to see the films individually and not as what it is and thats a 22 long episode tv series every film blends into the next. Its great that you are watching them in order and so close together so its more like watching a weekly tv show to get the full effect of how it was meant to be watched
Iron Man 3 still pisses me off. I went to see it opening day - SO hyped to see the Mandarin and to see War Machine kick some more ass - and I hated it. What made it even worse was that I _didn't_ go see Jurassic Park in 3D in favor of seeing this opening day; what I didn't know, was that it was the last day they were showing JP. So, I missed out on seeing my favorite movie of all time in theaters just so that I could see... this. One of the worst movies in the MCU.

I think its because it kind of feels like a side story. They started connecting the MCU and this one just feels like it doesnt really connect besides Tony's development.
In the last mcu video we saw Jenna and Holden eating popcorn and Matt eating something green like a salad but in this video there all eating popcorn this is further symbolising matts transformation into a nerd from a gym person
I‘m agreed with Matt, I actually love Iron Man 3 people say is bad because of the villains and stuff but I think this movie focuses on his humanity and how he deals with the fact that there’s thing bigger than him out there while him being just man in can trying to save the things he likes the most.
All you need is a likable group of people and the simplest concept can be entertaining. I like these videos. They help me try and remember how I felt my first tine seeing all of these as a young adult. Good stuff.
Matt, you had the same amount of appreciation for this movie that I had. IM3 is somewhat the “black sheep” of IM movies, but there’s a lot of depth to it that I appreciate you saw in it.

I really like Matt’s observation about Tony’s control problem. I think it’s an important part of his character ark and not a lot of people would notice that at this point of the MCU. I love Tony’s character and his journey more than any other character in the MCU and can’t wait too see Matt to find out.

loving having matts view on the mcu and his unique viws and btw don't worry about going straight into phase 3, we understand that breaks are required and it helps to not get burnt out, especially for matt, because he may get burn't out for this kind of movie and not like certain movies just because of the back to back reactions
Looking forward to more of Phase 2 - glad to hear you're all doing good. Matt seems to be coming around to these films, I think a big draw to them is just getting to know and love the characters, even if an individual film isn't great you still want to see what comes next for these characters.

I agree 100% with Matt about all the PTSD stuff. It wasn't just going through the portal in the sky, it was the fact that he really had no control ("I want a suit of armour around the world", Tony in AoU) To adress what's memorable about this movie, none of the action. What REALLY makes this film shine is how deep we get into Tony Stark's character. My memorable moments include his anxiety attack (showing he isn't as invincible as he pretends to be) and his final quote of the movie (cba to put it all here but basically saying without his armours and stuff he's still Iron Man). Those moments were just as impactful to me as any action scene

Honestly I’m not so sure TWS is going to be his thing. He’s not going to be a huge fan of the unrealistic parts of the movie. I don’t want to spoil the things I think he’ll dislike in case he reads this tho.
I agree Tony has a huge character Arc. he goes from the rules don't apply to me and I can do whatever I want, to swinging clear to the other end of the spectrum and feeling like they have to have complete oversight and be dictated to what they need to do, and then comes back and settles in the middle by the end. It's an amazing ride! One that takes most people decades to grow through.
Matt was right about the origin of PTSD of Tony. He's afraid that thing won't be in his control all the time & the fact that he feels hopeless, helpless at times.

I started where Holden did with both of them, immediately loving Tony but taking a bit longer to warm up to Cap. So fun to see someone taking the same journey as I did. It’s almost like getting to do it all over again.
Movie recommendation- Arrival with Amy Adams and jeramy Renner (hawk eye) it’s slow but the impact of the story I think he would love. Not to crazy in action or colors or in your face. It’s one of my favorite movies !

I think it’s good that they went in to this movie with no prior trailer or comic book knowledge bc they didn’t know that the mandarin was supposed to be this major bad guy for iron man and everyone was let down. I went in with circumstances similar to Matt and Jenna’s and I loved this movie. It wasn’t until afterwards that I realized that people hated that twist. Great video!!
Agreed/disagreed on the twist. The Mandarin in the comic books is so over-the-top and insane & evil that it would have been very difficult to translate to the screen. This was much easier to swallow and comprehend - here it's not about the mustache twirling, it is about the money. I loved this twist in the movie, because it was hilarious and Ben Kingsley was great.
@@elimgarak1617 I actually completely agree too and I never really understood the criticism. I really enjoyed the way the movie handles the Mandarin, and the genuine feeling of surprise in the theatre was great.

As a movie it's a great twist. Though the reason everyone hated it was for two main reasons and one bonus reason. 1. It would be like Superman getting ready to fight lex Luther or Batman getting ready to fight the joker and then we find out that neither of those characters exist in this timeline and were creations of just some random nobody with frankly generic superpowers(at least for marvel). 2. The thought that were never gonna see the actual real mandarin fight iron-man. I mean the Mandarin is coming in Zhang chi, but it's not gonna feel the same without iron-man. I mean this is comics dieing is like a broken leg, but still. Bonus reason, the original version had the female scientist be the real mandarin and some people liked that more cause it would of given the MCU it's first real female villain but it wasn't done for executive and toy reasons.
@@elimgarak1617 Would the Mandarin be really over the top when you have villains who are over the top that turned out to be successful. Also they didn't want to use the real Mandarin due to a marvel involvement with China.

This is one of my favorite MCU films and I'm really glad that Matt enjoyed it! Everything that Matt pointed out about Tony's mental health and the possible reasons for it's decline and problems are very plausible. I think that having a lack of control over certain situations (Tony seems to be very Type A, despite his sometimes nonchalant personality) is truly the driving force behind his decisions and fears in the future. Can't wait for the rest of Phase Two, great start!
Easily the most underrated MCU movie, definitely in my top 5.
I've come to find this particular series as the most anticipated I've been for someone's videos. Thoroughly enjoy seeing how they react to the movies.

I always thought Iron Man 3 was unfairly judged by comic fans.
Not necessarily unfairly, it is just that they put the blame in the wrong place. The movie has its problems, but none of them are directly related to the mandarin. It is just another Ironman movie with is overly complicated regarding the Villian...and I am talking about Killian here.

Age of Ultron is funnier than the first avengers so he probably will enjoy it
Age of Ultron had a lot of great character stuff, the interactions between the avengers was sublime. The plot and climax... Not so much.

He recovers from it here, and then the subsequent movies just brought it back for no reason and never allowed him to grow past it, thus ruining his arc.

Its great to see the connections to the character arcs, a lot of fans seem to see the films individually and not as what it is and thats a 22 long episode tv series every film blends into the next. Its great that you are watching them in order and so close together so its more like watching a weekly tv show to get the full effect of how it was meant to be watched

Iron Man 3 still pisses me off. I went to see it opening day - SO hyped to see the Mandarin and to see War Machine kick some more ass - and I hated it. What made it even worse was that I _didn't_ go see Jurassic Park in 3D in favor of seeing this opening day; what I didn't know, was that it was the last day they were showing JP. So, I missed out on seeing my favorite movie of all time in theaters just so that I could see... this. One of the worst movies in the MCU.

I think its because it kind of feels like a side story. They started connecting the MCU and this one just feels like it doesnt really connect besides Tony's development.

I‘m agreed with Matt, I actually love Iron Man 3 people say is bad because of the villains and stuff but I think this movie focuses on his humanity and how he deals with the fact that there’s thing bigger than him out there while him being just man in can trying to save the things he likes the most.
So he likes: Iron Man, Avengers and Iron Man 3. From the movies that we had. Just like me😂
All you need is a likable group of people and the simplest concept can be entertaining. I like these videos. They help me try and remember how I felt my first tine seeing all of these as a young adult. Good stuff.

I really like Matt’s observation about Tony’s control problem. I think it’s an important part of his character ark and not a lot of people would notice that at this point of the MCU. I love Tony’s character and his journey more than any other character in the MCU and can’t wait too see Matt to find out.

Matt seems to be coming around to these films, I think a big draw to them is just getting to know and love the characters, even if an individual film isn't great you still want to see what comes next for these characters.

I agree 100% with Matt about all the PTSD stuff. It wasn't just going through the portal in the sky, it was the fact that he really had no control ("I want a suit of armour around the world", Tony in AoU)
To adress what's memorable about this movie, none of the action. What REALLY makes this film shine is how deep we get into Tony Stark's character. My memorable moments include his anxiety attack (showing he isn't as invincible as he pretends to be) and his final quote of the movie (cba to put it all here but basically saying without his armours and stuff he's still Iron Man). Those moments were just as impactful to me as any action scene

I agree Tony has a huge character Arc. he goes from the rules don't apply to me and I can do whatever I want, to swinging clear to the other end of the spectrum and feeling like they have to have complete oversight and be dictated to what they need to do, and then comes back and settles in the middle by the end. It's an amazing ride! One that takes most people decades to grow through.
Matt was right about the origin of PTSD of Tony.
He's afraid that thing won't be in his control all the time & the fact that he feels hopeless, helpless at times.
