  • Sky Saxon documentary. The story of The Seeds' Sky Sunlight Saxon, his stay in London and the recording of the 'Transparency' album in 2005. Sky wanders out of Goldtop Studios at Jungle Records' premises, onto Chalk Farm Road, and into sympathetic clothes and record shops in Camden Market and Inverness Street. Sky is interviewed at length, along with producer, Spacemen 3's Sterling Roswell. From the DVD (along with a live gig) that accompanies the CD.
Documentary produced, directed and edited by Harry Deansway & Chris Hall.

    The Sixties psychedelic garage legend:-
    * Veteran Sky Saxon who influenced The Doors; the punk scene; and was at the heart of psychedelia * Studio album recorded in London in 2005; his first for many years. * Backed by members of BARRACUDAS, SCIENTISTS and SPACEMEN 3. * DVD is a live show of 15 songs incl. original hits plus this 26-min documentary & interviews.
In 1965, former rock’n’roll singer Sky Saxon formed THE SEEDS. Their biggest hit, ‘Pushing Too Hard’ took a year to reach the US top 40 in 1966, but was followed by further US hits ‘Mr. Farmer’, ‘Cant Seem To Make You Mine’, ‘One Thousand Shadows’. Their two 1966 albums ‘THE SEEDS’ and the more adventurous ‘A WEB OF SOUND’ were an undeniably simple but nonetheless brilliant blend of British and blues influences, leading to comparisons as being ‘America’s own Rolling Stones’
These raw and simplistic records with Sky’s idiosyncratic vocals, Wurlitzer combo keyboards and fuzztone guitar became to epitomise the phenomenon ‘Garage Rock’ and a decade later influenced punk, but the Seeds soon surpassed that label. In 1967 they coined the term ‘Flower Power’ and were at the centre of the new psychedelic scene. Hanging out with the Mothers of Invention, Captain Beefheart and The Monkees, Sky’s new compositions like ‘March of the Flower Children’ and ‘Travel With Your Mind’ on the ‘FUTURE’ album contained acid-tinged playful whimsy, and like the Beatles they innovated with Eastern-style instrumentation.
At this point in their success they headlined over bands such as The Doors (who built both their vocal & keyboard sound upon the Seeds style), Buffalo Springfield, The Byrds, The Kinks, Vanilla Fudge, The Supremes, and split the bill in New York with Jimi Hendrix. They cameoed in Jack Nicholson’s ‘Psych Out’ movie, sold out the Hollywood Bowl and mega-success seemed around the corner.
Later in 1967 Sky released a blues collaboration with Muddy Waters ‘A SPOONFUL OF SEEDY BLUES’ followed in early ’68 with The Seeds ‘RAW & ALIVE: MERLIN’S MUSIC BOX’, a live album showcasing the band to be a powerhouse, but shortly after they disbanded. Since then Sky changed his name to Sky Sunlight Saxon and occasionally resurfaced to release a solo album, whilst always remaining true to his 60’s principles.
The Seeds’ huge influence is demonstrated by the many artists who’ve covered them, including Garbage, The Ramones, The Damned, Pere Ubu, The Dwarves, Residents, Cabaret Voltaire, Pretty Things, Billy Childish, Johnny Thunders & Noel Gallagher.
In 2004 Sky Saxon resurrected The Seeds to tour UK & Europe with Arthur Lee and Love and on their own, and recorded the ‘RED PLANET’ album in America.
Sky recorded a new studio album ‘TRANSPARENCY’ in 2005 and filmed a DVD in London with members of The Barracudas, The Scientists and Spacemen 3, issued as a double package release in September 2005. Sky Saxon & the Seeds toured his last tour of Europe from August through to October 2005.
Sadly, Sky Saxon passed away in June 2009.

When I ran a record label in 1977, Sky Saxon somehow got my home phone number (possibly from Greg Shaw) and used to call me for a chat, usually stoned out of his mind, but a lovely gentle man. He would talk for hours, which wouldn't have been so bad because he was calling from the US, where it was early evening. The only problem being, that the time in the UK was 2 am. A true legend. Sky Saxon. We owe you so much.

We recognise that Sky! He would talk for hours and hours and hours; you couldn't interrupt because he was so entertaining and continuous and on and on and stoned and convoluted and dedicated and magical and story-telling and philosophising and deep and stoned and immaculate and meaningful and on and on and on and on... Loved him!

The Seeds were on a short-lived American TV show called "The Mothers in Law." My Ma, Dad and my grandma watched that show with me. They dug The Seeds. Sky took a psychedelic stroll, and he never came back. Sky Saxon (RIP)

You meant The Byrds, with a -y, because there was another band in the UK called The Birds, featuring on guitar a young Ronnie Wood. A Mod band.

I was at that gig, and they tore the roof off. You can't really tell from the clips here, but the pick-up Seeds were passionate and dynamic, while Sky was cool AF. He never fluffed a number, he nailed it. It was righteous. I remember thinking at the time, this isn't nostagia, or "like" being back then, this is very much the real thing, happening right now. It was a hell of a set. He may give you the impression of a dandelion on the breeze, but he never missed a beat. He knew people were gently mocking, but fuck 'em, he didn't rise to their stupidity. RIP Sunlight.

I was surprised to learn that even the Electric Prunes got to tour Europe regularly in the 1960s and they were popular. If the Seeds had gotten the same chance to see London in the mid-60s, there's no doubt in my mind they would have made friends with the Kinks, the Move, Small Faces, and Pink Floyd

Wrong. Vito Paulekas and his apprentice Carl Franzoni were (supposed) the ones who started the flower power movement. Supposedly, because (of course) it was all made up (and manipulated) by the military complex. As it happens with all things "rock-'n'-roll".
