Just got a copy of this the value is truly amazing 🤩 my legion is painted white and purple. Not all legions wore red , though a lot did. Auxiliary green would also look great on these Romans or pics all red hair tribesman so many painting options
My name is Maximus Decimus Meridias, commander of the armies of the north, general of the Felix legions, loyal servant to the true emperor Marcus Aurelius, father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife, and I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next
I remember I commented on an older SPQR video, and you said you would probably never play the game. Glad you got this on the table. Great stuff guys. Johnny, I need to talk toy you about your use of slang. We will confer on this subject.
23:25 It's more likely to be the other way around. Some Gaulish nations exported arms and armor to Rome along with a whole bunch of other metalworking products, so even in Caesar's legions there were probably legionaries using gallic-made equipment. Before Caesar started conquering Rome's own allies, a lot of Gaulish nations and multinational polities, like the Arverni Confederation, were allies of the Roman Republic (that's why "Vercingetorix" served as Caesar's contubernalis during his time as an auxiliary, before he was elected as a Vercingetorix (meaning, "commander-in-chief")). Caesar wanted to conquer the Gauls because they had a lot worth conquering; many tribes were very wealthy from long-distance trade and had relatively low militarized assets (due to lack of large-scale conflicts); compared to a specialized warrior-society like Rome in which almost every adult male was a warrior, instead of just the aristocrats.
Very possibly. As to why Caesar wanted to conquer Gaul, that is a while other complicated question. A big part of it was money. A bugger part of it was not wanting to go back to Rome to face trial and possible execution.
Table looked amazing. Scenery and animals and models were really great. I’m really interested in hearing your take on this game. It would have been nice to have had a recap. Music was great, too!
Another great vid for the miniature gaming community. Thanks heeps. I do wonder for historical purposes if the Romans at the time would choose a battlefield with a farm bank in the middle!? Obviously making it difficult for the Romans to move coherently, which I believe were a strength. Possibly the Gauls might begin defending a village or farmhouse.
You are right, of course. We deliberately set the board up like that. Like a lot of skirmish level games, it isn't much fun if everyone blobs into one big melee in the middle - we made a battlefield that prevents that from happening too early.
Great game, guys! Definitely the time period I know most about. Got this game when it released initially, but then segued into full blown Hail Caesar not long after. I'm not up to snuff on the changes, but it looks like it plays similar to the initital (version one) release. Thanks for the battle report. Might just have to dust this one off again.
11:35 and again at 12:52 you make your saves, which you reroll. but i thought the Pilum denied shield usage until they are no longer in combat. (page 27) "for this action and for every subsequent melee action the acting unit is locked in combat, the acting unit can not use any shields. the acting enemy unit regains the use of their shields once they are no longer in combat" so by that, the save re-roll wouldn't/shouldn't of happened? (im watching this as me and my friend are learning to play) so wanted to double check. 19:32 it states because you have a large unit, you get a +1 to hit. where can i find that in the book please?
@@ModellingforAdvantage thank you. I too had just started playing and was. Looking for demo games so just needed Confirmation on rules :) thanks for replying!
Beautiful scenery and models - I bought some of the same Hovel stuff when Infamy, Infamy came out, but unlike yours, mine remains sadly unpainted! Interesting game - I need to try this myself as I got the updated rules a couple of months back. I just need to paint up my Romans as I burned out painting Gauls last year and all ancients have been on hold since...
They behave like real romans , they even steal the chickens of the poor gallics . The Gallic house is great . Like this video .Remember me my recents videos about the Siege of Alesia .

Early legions are in a range of colours, but I think post Marius they go for red or white because its cheaper. Generally..

Like any skirmish game, if you choose the right scenario, ir plays well.
Most of what I say is just a place holder for an actual word with a meaning.

I think I will like this game. Great job! I'm painting the Romans as I watched this game. Thank you for sharing this report. Take it easy guys!
It definitely can be a lot of fun.
great looking table, love it!
Most kind!
Loving the music gents never played this so looking forward to it
Yeah, something a bit different.
Recently discovered your channel, really enjoy all the content. Keep it up!
Welcome aboard! Glad you like it.

Thanks! Will do!
I'm fairly certain it says casualties get removed from the front of melee combat
Great game. Look forward to the campaign 👍
You and me both!
Tribute in chickens 🐓 lmao 🤣
A true currency of real value!
Great game. And loving the table 😁👍
Thanks mate. Jonny B done good with those Hovels buildings I think.
Very good report guys. Really enjoyed watching this. Poor old romans though. Love the chieftains name to. Velux skylight 🤣👌
Thanks... still working on a name for a second hero as we progress through the campaign.
Looks like you guys had fun. I bought the starter set but have not played it yet. Need to get the Romans ready
It is not a bad little game. Just like with any skirmish game, try to make sure your objectives encourage spreading forces to avoid mid table blob.
Great game and nice table. Nice paced game as well
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it.

I think they made a few changes to the system, but big changes to the points to offer better balance.
great battle I would like to see you do it again with your "house rules" I can't wait to get mine painted
We will continue to tweek the rules as we move forward with the campaign.
Good set chaps well done
Thanks 👍
Been looking forward to this. Thanks for sharing. If there's a campaign system I would love to know your thoughts on it.
The plan is to play a campaign - it seems to have an anti-snowball mechanic. We shall see.
Cracking game, need to look at these rules again, seemed to fly along 👍🏻😁
We rehearsed a few games to be a bit more practiced with the system when we filmed but it is fairly easy to get to grips with.
@@ModellingforAdvantage 😊 i did think wow! You’ve really nailed these rules on 1st attempt

This was our very first game so there wil lbe mistakes - pilum does work as you describe. The +1 to melee checks is in the large units section p.19

Yes, together they're morally disadvantaged.
Roman's love their parthian chicken
Oh, they loved the Parthians....
Just had my first game of SPQR last weekend and loved it
Glad to hear it mate - what armies did you play?
@@ModellingforAdvantage I played Athenian Greeks
Hey. Can anyone tell me the materials you use for that floor on the board? Thanks
Hand built - we made a video about it here: th-cam.com/video/UKQwgwPQtw0/w-d-xo.html
@ModellingforAdvantage thanks and what is the flock youre using?
Nice battle

I'm a bit confused. Are these Gauls or Celts?
I used the terms rather interchangeably. These are Gauls.
Table very nice like the village and livestock. Realy add to the game .
Thanks, we were really pleased with the board.
