    Lots of people talk about Tecumseh's blowing up all the time. I heard that if you never over-rev them, they work fine. And I would have to agree. Our 11HP SnowKing motor on our Ariens has never ever let us down, and always starts perfectly in the cold. It's probably around 25 years old by now

      Yeah and they don't change or add oil too, all they do is whine when they blow. Had snow king engines that were 40 years old and still ran fine.

      @MichaelMosesHammer 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I like them too Jake! I also never had one throw a rod. The ones that do are " Abused " and have very poor maintenance. I checked my neighbors mowers he uses for his lawn care business last fall. He uses Honda's for his hand mowers.
      Not one of them had any oil showing on the stick. I told him this, and he said he did not care. He said when they blow up, he will get new ones! Must be nice. ha ha.

      Maintenence is the key. I don't have a problem with them either.
      Well except when someone brings theirs in with no oil.
      At least I have a good used parts supply.

    Always check your oil before each start up folks. Pour a little bit of Marvel Mystery Oil in it aswell. I've been running the same engine for 20 years. Doing these simple check ups before each start will save you big $$$$ in the long run.

    In all honesty Dony, I service probably 50 snowblowers a year to include oil....belts...new augers and impellers...carb rebuilds...ignition...everything you can think of. And in almost 40 years of working on these the "blown up" Tecumseh Snow Kings I've run across all had these 3 things in common: 1-owner abuse to include fiddling with the governors and running highly excessive revs....2- oil never changed....3-Ran very hard on low dirty oil. The flat heads are wonderful engines.

  • @rm42749
    @rm42749 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Lot of talk here about running the engine at less than full throttle. That is a mistake since it is designed to run wide open. Running at half or three quarters puts strain on the engine because the eng doesn't achieve enough torque to properly operate. Read the manual!

  • @JmanRx81
    @JmanRx81 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My 10hp Tecumseh did that exact thing after FINALLY getting it running with a new carburetor.

  • @wbgator1
    @wbgator1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    That kind of thing is quit common around here as well. No bearing on the crank where the connecting rod goes on is part of the problem. I experimented on one several yrs. ago. I used JBweld to join all the pieces that were broken out and then put a layer of JB on both the inside and out side of the engine. it worked wonderfully, the engine is still running today and I have done several more since.

    I like Tecumseh engines. I find them easy to work on and I've owned five of them, two of them SnoKing engines. I have one that was run low on oil and seized, I freed it up and I've been mowing with it for two years now. Good to see a professional that knows when its the motor's fault and when its not.

    • @PhildWithMalice
      @PhildWithMalice 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is worthy of a +1. Tecumseh gets a bad rap from those that don't maintain their equipment. I would take 1 Tecumseh that is properly maintained over 1000 poorly or correctly maintained engines of similar characteristics. I currently run 2 Snow Kings professionally and personally alongside with Briggs/Lawnboy 2 cycles for snow removal and 1 Tecumseh TVS series for my personal lawn mower. These engines are tough as nails and never lacking in power... as long as you maintain them.

    • @MajorHorstPower
      @MajorHorstPower 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I have worked on hundreds of small engines ( briggs, tecumseh, Hondas, clones, etc.) most of them are good to great engines. Of course you are going to come across a manufacturer defective engine here and there when the factory pumps out tons of them in a day. But for the most part, they all turn to crappy engines regardless of brand when a feller starts neglecting the preventative maintenance on them. Change the oil in them, clean up the plug and pull the cowl and blow the crap out the fins every once in awhile and they will take of you of a good long while! Take care everyone.

    • @CraigArndt

      Dave Horst Excellent post, I couldn't agree more.

    • @thomaserickson3043
      @thomaserickson3043 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly! People are quick to blame the product then rather than their maintenance and operational habits. I've been working on small engines for 20 plus years and usually what causes these engines to fail no matter if it's a Briggs Kohler or Tecumseh is A, not checking or changing oil and for two, revving them Full Throttle right upon Startup when they are still ice cold and the oil is still thick people are so impatient and don't allow them a moment to warm up especially on snowblower applications. So people should actually realize the real problem it's usually operator error not the equipment that's like blaming my pencil for misspelled words complete nonsense. I prefer tecumseh engines myself especially on snowblowers because they seem to start the best in the severe cold

  • @ElectoneGuy

    That third blower (Noma) is what I have except it's the 8/24 model with a plastic discharge chute. It got quite a workout this year, but is still going strong. Best thing I ever did was change out the Champion spark plug for a NGK and now it starts and runs so much better. I do yearly oil changes in the springtime and general lubrication of all parts before it goes to bed for the summer.

  • @PhildWithMalice

    This video strikes a chord with me. The failures shown here are not because of a design flaw. They are of the owner's negligence. Tecumseh Snow Kings have a soft spot in my heart. Never have I owned a series of small motors with more hours and fewer failures than these. I've been through 10+ feet of snow chugging along without a care in the world,15+ hours of continuous use with almost no breaks for days straight, bitter cold that dipped below 0F and never had one major failure. I've never had a group of sub $1,000 engines earn me $100,000+ before or since. RIP Tecumseh, I will always miss the Snow King not being on new equipment.

    • @1575murray
      @1575murray 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are correct. I have a Toro 421 with a Tecumseh HS40 engine and it still starts easily and runs well after 40 years of use. Most of the connecting rod failures are caused by either running low on oil or running at excessive RPM.

    Hey Don, what's your favorite type of motor oil? I find myself partial to Shell Rotella because it has a lot of zinc in it, and that's good for these small engines with flat tappet valves. I've been considering switching over to royal purple only because the guys that drive air cooled Harleys love that stuff, but I don't think it has as much zinc or moly in it...

    • @PhildWithMalice
      @PhildWithMalice 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've switched over to the Amsoil 4-stroke series or the Z-Rod (for high zinc) myself. The Rotella seems to sludge up a bit on air cooled designs with my use. It works great on my water cooled Kawasaki however. High zinc really isn't needed unless you have an older engine (back in the leaded fuel days).
      The motorcycle guys around here seem to be switching to Amsoil over Royal Purple due to less cost for the same performance.

    • @donyboy73
      @donyboy73  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Phil'd With Malice Amsoil is a great product. Been around quite some time too. I am thinking about switching to it. I used to run it in a 1969 cadillac that i owned. I had the bypass filter kit under the hood also.The car ran very smooth with it.

    • @grrobinso
      @grrobinso 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      donyboy73 Hi Don, I'm really enjoying your videos. What type of Rotella would you recommend? I just picked up a new snow blower this winter and I want it to last a long time. Thanks!

    • @PhildWithMalice
      @PhildWithMalice 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Greg Robinson If you run in cold conditions (below 20F), use either Mobile One 0w-30/40 or Amsoil 4 stroke 0w-40. I'm running Amsoil 0w-40 in my 11.5hp Tecumseh and Mobile One 0w-30 in my 8.5hp Tecumseh. For Briggs and Honda engines, the 0w-30 works great and for the Robin and Tecumseh engines, 0w-40 works great. I have 2 Tecumseh snow throwers and the 8.5hp gets Mobile One 0w-30 and has about 300 hours on it and my 11.5hp gets Amsoil 0w-40 and that has nearly 700 hours of the worst Lake Ontario winters can provide.
      I honestly would skip the Shell Rotella because it lacks the cold running capability of Mobile One and Amsoil. I love causally starting my 11.5hp with a half-hearted pull while watching my neighbors try to start theirs with the electric start.

  • @MichaelMosesHammer
    @MichaelMosesHammer 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    hey don. I sure am glad my 1975 ariens with 4HP tecumseh is still running good. It has seen a lot of snow over the years. I do change oil twice a season, and run synthetic 5W-30W. Castrol Syntec now. Years back had no synthetic. I think mobil one was the first I ever saw. It's never been rebuilt, and it huffs a little smoke under load on a heavy snow. I may just go head rebuild it this summer. I want to paint it all up anyway. thanks for all the great videos. michael.

    Well, now I know why there is a hole in my friend's snowblower. He was using it on a steep incline. Because there are two shafts on these engines, one for the auger and the other to drive the wheels are there replacement engines available or a conversion kit for off the shelf engines currently available with single shafts? Thanks for the education.

    I have a question about my yecumseh 9 hp. When running if I pull the dip stick air blows out. And when just pulling the pull chord I can hear air from from the dip stick. Is this normal? I have roughly 90psi on my compression test. No oily residue on plug and no smoke from exhaust.

    Never over rev your engines is excellent advice, the governor is there for a reason, to not only keep the rpms up when the engine is under a load, but also to prevent the engine from over revving. You should never modify or bypass the governor to make your engine run faster as catastrophic failure of the internal engine components will result such as throwing a rod. A lot of the time though it's not the user's fault, it's the engine's fault such as for example the throttle becomes stuck wide open, etc. Anytime an engine I'm working on over revs while I'm test running it I immediately kill the engine before any damage can result and diagnose the cause.

    Family and friends of mine take care of our engines and Tecumseh Snow Kings are tops. NEVER has one blown up since we take care of them and are they tough. We love the old Briggs for mower engines though. I think the Vanguard is the only good Briggs now if I recall. A shame people love the crappy Predator for $90 that are half plastic-----but blow up after six months and then you get a "new" one from HF. Sad that we've become a disposable society.

    My Tecumseh 8hp engine on my snowblower has two output shafts, one running off the camshaft, these motors are becoming VERY DIFFICULT to find parts for where in live in Pennsylvania. Don, do you have trouble getting parts for these as well? I'm afraid if my engine goes, ill be shopping for a new blower because a single output shaft will not work on my Ariens snowblower because of the drive belt configuration. So I take good care of it. I have it running at Max rpm of 3500. I only use full throttle when necessary.

    Hi donyboy73, I have a story to tell you. I used to have a Chinese made mini bike 2.5 hp. It had engine failure too, but not because of a broken connecting rod, but because it overheated a lot and forced to run overheated. How it ended was the engine was making a similar clacking noise and no compression but at least the internals were in good shape

    My dad have a lawntractor with an B&S 12 hp PowerBuild engine on it, its a realy good mower, but in my opinion, the engine doesn't run properly. if the engine runs stationair, en you give full throttle, it dies. but if you put te gashandle in choke, the engine will revv normaly, so I say to my dad, give it more petrol, so we did that, but than te engine say at stationair, even at full throttle, plof, plof while it runs.
    is that normal? or is our carb death? (i have it cleaned up several times).
    and, we have a Toro lawnmower (i think) 5.5hp B&S, and sometimes it smokes really bad after a cold start, what is it? (he uses oil, sometime much, sometime less) (sorry for my bad English, I'm from the Netherlands ;D, excuses)

    Dony:
    You said in this video that you should keep the oil in a Tecumseh within the hashed area if the dipstick, but when you check the level, do you thread the stick all the way in & then out again, or do you just put the stick against the top of the threads & pull it back out again? I have heard both with regards to my '71 Ariens with a Tecumseh & it could cause a wide variation in oil levels.
    Thank you.

    I have a stiga snowcube and the motor blew out all the gaskets at the same time , what i found is that the crank ventilation frose in the line betwen the valve cap and the carburator. I found out that the ventilation dont get vaccum from the carburator and the air is standing still in the line , this is becourse that the motor do not have a airfilter. After i put all the gasket back in their placeses and i used it for the rest of that winter . The next easter i changed the motor to a Honda with a airfilter and it have worked just fine with the new motor for several years now , this year so far there have been no snow yeat but i'm reade for it , fealt sorry for the people in newyork were it came so much at the same time. I am disabled so I have my son use our Ariens 32 inch 13hp snowblower to do the work. He had a friend borrow it and he put regular bolts where the shear bolts go. It screwed up the augur section . I think it is as bad as a blown engine. He is paying for the repair but the part is on backorder and we are to get 14 inches of more snow. Right now we have 3 feet . We have more snow than I can remember for 20 years. The other thing I wish I could get are chains for the wheels . Down here there 100 bucks for a set. And being disabled I can not afford them.

    Hey Dony, why is the spark plug on top of the valves instead of the piston. I have been wondering this ever since I took the head off my tecumseh engine.

    • @googleplusisdead
      @googleplusisdead 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not a Tecumseh engineer, but contrary to what's usually explained, the fuel/air mix does NOT explode (that would be detonation, NOT a good thing), but burns VERY fast, so there's actually a flame front from the plug through the cylinder. I'm assuming they discovered that was the best place for the flame to start for maximum effect.

    Hi Dony, I sure could use your advice, I have a 2003 MTD Snow Blower with Tecumseh HSSK-50 5hp twin counter rotating shaft engine. It still looks like new and was always well maintained and properly winterized...HOWEVER...two winters ago it started losing power. The machine has maybe 30 gentle hours on it.
    Just the other day I pulled the head and when I rotated the piston down from TDC I noticed heavy gouge marks in the cylinder wall...it never burnt oil or smoked. No busted piston rings and the piston ring lands and skirts are perfect! Crank and rod journals are like new!
    So, how can this cylinder be fixed? The block is no longer available, a .010 over size piston and ring set is available but I'm not even sure a .010 will clean up the bore,...AND...when I took the block to a machine shop I was told the cylinder can not be bored as the aluminum is treated with a nikasil hardening process and when bored the hard nikasil is removed...so why offer the oversized piston?
    Not that one is even available, there is not enough room between the cylinder and valve seat for an iron liner.
    So, even though the insides of this engine look new...are there any options to fix the cylinder or, is the engine just junk?
    Thanks for your advice and hopefully some options.
    Regards, Ray

      I wouldn't be surprised if most customers after hearing it will need a new engine just say forget it.....keep it as the diagnostic fee and run out and just buy a new one. Probably vowing not to buy the same brand so keeping the old one for parts would be pointless.

    Down here in the states people like the 212cc / 6.5 HP Predator engines from Harbor Freight for replacements. Usually you have to enlarge the main jet slightly for the colder weather. They are good for replacing up to an HM80 and / or for up to a 24" blower. Best part is they are dirt cheap at $100. You might get by with something from Princess Auto up there.

    I have to laugh when people sit and blame it all on Tecumseh Engines. The funny thing is no engine is going to last you if you never change the oil or maintain them. I don't give a crap if it's a Briggs Kohler or Tecumseh , if you don't change or check the oil guess what's going to happen I've seen just as many blown up Briggs & stratton's, even Kohler as Tecumseh due to the lack of checking oil and maintenance. I've been working on small engines for 20 plus years and ignorance usually gets expensive as seen here. IMO I much rather tecumseh on snowblowers because they always seemed to start the best in the severe cold and I have never once had one blow up on me and I run them pretty hard. It's amazing how long things last if you take care of them rather than blaming the equipment. Usually most engines say right on the side of them what weight to run for oil in the temperature range you are operating it it's not rocket science people. Another thing I see a lot of people making the mistake of is starting them when they're ice cold and revving them full throttle right away when they're still cold and the oil is still thick, you can't do that until they warm up and the oil begins to circulate better. That's another reason why these engines fail and not just Tecumseh Engines either so get that nonsense out of your head.
