    I wish Tec still made stuff, they were my fav back then. I have a couple old Craftsman mowers I stored that have very low use, Tec motors. LEV195 I think. One day they will be great again.

    Only had to replace the pull start cord on my techumseh vantage 35 I've owned it new since 2004 . since 2012 been a bit fussy looking after it a lot more like changing the oil more often and giving it a proper clean after use and sharpening and balancing the blades it's good to see what they look like inside without taking mine apart

    The older Tecumseh's can be the easier to bring back but when you get them so neglected like you said then its a pretty poor chance that they come back.

      I have a question i want to use a 3,5hp Tecumseh Engine in a Board Track Racer the Engine is over 20 years old so does It have a plastic gear to Drive the valves because im thinking about taking the Gouvernor out for power

    So you have: ignition coil, spark plug, carburetor, pull cord assembly, engine shroud, gas tank and fuel cap, governor spring, and flywheel with key. A good parts haul! :D

    I have never seen the inside of a Tecumseh before. At least the cam gear was metal. I agree Tecumseh engine aren’t great, the older ones were good. I had one used 1973-1998
    And 2001-2016 ( rod nocking)
    I have never had a mower come back yet that I had fixed and sold.
    This year mostly
    briggs ( mostly fw key issues)
    No Honda’s
    4 kohler ( all carb issues)
    1 Tecumseh (crank seal still finding time to fix that)
    1 powermore (carb clean)

      D Fields me either, I always fix them like they’re my own. sometimes they are. Sold aToro self propelled last week for $95, customer was trying it out and traction cable broke on the test drive. Put a new cable on, cost me $15.00, he’s happy. Didn’t charge him. Bet I have a customer for life, and all his friends, too.

    Got a 98 Tecumseh on my mower..still going reliably and strong and I love the little thing. It does have a certain rod knock now though - so I think it's days are numbered..

      Mine knocks and smokes on startup. I figured out it was oil leaking into the cylinder. Now I keep the front wheels off the ground with a log when stored. No more smoke and knock. I hope this helps

    I have 5 of these Tecumseh's powering various types of equipment, from an ice auger to riding and push mower's. Also rescued a 45 year old Tecumseh V60 pond pump from my Uncle's farm. These things sat out side floating in water night and day during the Summer months for years and when I picked it up years later it was not seized. Needs a carb and she will be a runner again.
    I have no issue's with Tecumseh engines. Why? Because I look after them... like most other people don't!

      The italian tecumses built by aspera motors a Torino have real bearings and cast Iron sleeve, this version is the best lawnmower engine ever built! The top for a 4 stroke kart! The lasts fon the 90s are crap who dont Last a year

  • @Buddycoop1
    @Buddycoop1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My dad worked for them. He said their winter engines were awesome. Tested in the U.P. and Canada. The mower engines were not very good. Keep the winter L-heads oiled and they last forever as Craigslist Ariens/Toro snowblower show.

    We've got a lawnmower with this engine in it that runs pretty well, but needs to breather replaced. It came with the electric starter option, and I can't pull the vanes off to get at the breather due to the plastic gear teeth around the edge of the vanes. I tried pulling the gear off with a gear puller, but the plastic gives enough to let the puller slip off without removing anything. How do I remove the vane?

    Heh, those Tecumseh's may be cheaply made but I've had better success with those than I have Honda GC series engines. Both working on them and using them.

    • @campbellpaul
      @campbellpaul 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with you about Tecumseh engines. For a low-quality casting they have exceptionally well-engineered and machined parts, and OEM replacement parts are abundant and cheap. They do suffer from carbon build-up over time which causes low compression and starting issues, from my experience, but they have a better oiling system than the Briggs engines, as anyone who has owned a Quantum is familiar with their tell-tale puffs of white smoke upon startup. I really have nothing against Honda GCV engines, but they are just a pain to work on and have no soul (just like the majority of their owners).

    • @MattsRageFitGarage
      @MattsRageFitGarage 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@campbellpaul I agree, I don't know why people have such a hardon over the quantum engines. They are good but nowhere near as good as the old 92000 series briggs. Even well maintained quantums seem to smoke and rattle after a while. Then the Honda GCV engines people think they have a goldmine when it's a cheap engine with a timing belt and no removable cylinder head and a crappy carburetor.

    • @campbellpaul
      @campbellpaul 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MattsRageFitGarage Yeah, you really have to be committed when you take the carburetor off a Honda engine. Almost like you should take photos of what you are doing in case you forget some strange appendage. I think the easiest carburetors are Tecumseh, even though so many people complain about them. I prefer the foam filters over paper ones, too, as you don't have to worry about accidentally not snapping the cover on perfectly, where dust can more easily enter through a poor seal.

    Where can I find that valve tool?

  • @jwayne777
    @jwayne777 ปีที่แล้ว

    The point of failure is the oil seal on top underneath the flywheel. It starts leaking oil then because of the large seal tolerance created it will suck in dirt and abrasive debris straight into the engine. First thing i do on tecumseh flips is oil seal change if you see crud on top.
    Then ignition coil and carb clean

    Had an almost brand new TEC that would not run right now matter what I did, turned out one of the valve stems was not machined down or probably the seat wore down, but it almost new so who knows, I dunno, but the valve would never fully close, little touch of the stem to a grinding wheel and it was good then.

    I hate working on Tecumseh engines, they run nicely but are a pain to work on.>Design engineered, not maintenance engineered. You are right, Tecumseh engines are not as durable as B&S. B&S are not as refined though. I'll take the durability any day

    What is the scrap price for an engine broken down like this into steel and aluminium scrap? Is it worth the time?

    • @hanksgarage_

      Not really it’s maybe a $1 and change per engine. Depending on scrap prices at the time. I do scrap my stuff but usually wait till I have enough to bring in.

    I think you are being too rough on ol' Tecumseh. I picked up 2 Toro's from the early to mid 2000's that run great. Have no idea how the previous owner's treated them. Toro used the lev series flathead on it's premium Personal Pace mowers throughout most of the 2000-2009 period and Toro certainly cares about its mower reputation. Still, I hear ya' when you say you have more "come backs" with Tecumseh. Don't know how to explain that.

      There are always exceptions to the rule, but by and far most people dont have good experiences with them regardless of personal anecdotes.
