    Man. I just logged in to say THANK YOU. The secret small screen!! I replaced the carb on my mower because nobody could figure out what was wrong. It worked for a while, and started to surge again. Same issue, nobody knew what was wrong. Today after watching this, I checked the screen and it was packed with debris. Cleaned it out, and now it runs perfectly. Saved me so much stress/trouble. Thank you buddy.

    I have an MTD Ride on mower in Australia and my mower was doing the search thing when warm and stalling. So I had pulled the drain plug blot on the bottom of the bowl and the fuel was clean and I was all most at the stage of taking it to get looked at by MTD Service Center and found your video showing that there is a little screen on the back side of the fuel inlet at was not on any diagrams.
    thank you so much I cleaned this out and my mower is running like a dream again.

I had NO idea that this little screen existed. I ended up replacing the carburetor and it worked right away. I had the same problem I did the same thing you did in this video. However I did one thing different, From the gas tank I used a longer gas line. This way the filter hangs down lower than the carb. The gas has to travel up the top of the filter and upwards toward the carb. I ran it this way for over 2yrs now with No problem. And it makes the filter easier to get to. Dumb luck, I blew that screen out, lost it, good to know I did not need it any ways. Awesome video !! thanks

    Thanks Don, at first you would think it was the coil because the trouble started after warm up, but I guess the automatic choke kept supplying extra gas until it completely warmed up and then it slowly started starving for gas.
    Interesting how this can happen.
    I imagine that it it was a manual choke the trouble would start as soon as you shut the choke off.

    I always remove the internal fuel filter from automotive carbs and install a quality inline fuel filter instead. That inline filter will handle more dirt and is much easier to change than those little internal filters.
    Same thing here. An inline filter will take a lot longer to block up than that little screen.

    thanks for another great video. I repair lawn equipment as a after retirement job. Learned so much from you and am very grateful for your efforts. I have a client with an older 2003 snow blower with a Tecumseh HMSK 105 engine. She is a 70year old widow and deals with a 450 driveway. Her machine runs for 30 to 40 minutes and then dies. It's usually at least 300 ft from the house. I suspected the gas cap and the ignition module. Let it run this fall for 30 min with a spark tester on and it performed as she predicted. I loosened the gas cap and checked the spark which was good. It would not start but started and ran great after 15 min or so. Your thoughts?

I cleaned it 3 different times and it would run for a while but started sugeing every time after runing about 15 min or so. As I said I ordered the part in early june and it took till the middle of August before the part arrived. They clamed it was on backorder. I went out and checked the old carb after seeing this vid and sure enough that darn screen was plugged. At least I now have a replacement carb if something else happens with it.

    That machine is so new I haven't even seen them around here. That engine is surging like a bull on steroids! Sure sounds like a fuel problem like it was burning on fumes for sure. I tell you what, I don't like that the battery is already dieing, there should be at least 30-minutes of reserve in modern 12-volt tractor batteries. Yeah, MTD thinks they are improving things by adding that screen in there but its better to have an inline fuel filter, I like the big transparent ones, they work good. Excellent repair Don! :)

    The OLD MAN at Eliminator Performance: saw your original hidden screen video, so this was a great update video on exactly what happens when that screen gets plugged up. We have seen a lot of carb bowls with fine grass clippings plugging up the main jet so if there is room we always add a fuel filter and if possible one of the paper elements since the red and white screen filters are 75 and 150 microns respectfully and the paper filter you installed is 7 to 11 micons i believe which should prevent further issues.

    • @kenhilson786
      @kenhilson786 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Will 11 microns give enough flow on a gravity feed?

    • @waynestefinashen239
      @waynestefinashen239 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We have used the paper element fuel filters on many pieces of gravity feed equipment without issue. Just make sure your fuel tank is clear of any debris that may restrict the amount of fuel that gets to the filter. We would also suggest back purging the fuel line with air to clear the filter in the fuel tank or changing out the fuel tank filter or cleaning it if this is possible.

    Our 25-ish year old craftsman lawn tractor has that style of filter and it doesn’t have a fuel pump, we haven’t had any issues with it, but I have seen some lower cost machines have issues with them

  • @nelsonthekkath4830
    @nelsonthekkath4830 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Once I had tough time to find the reason for same issue. The issue was., on a Briggs and Stratton engine, the solenoid was the culprit. There was a rubber button was at the end and it was loose. While check the solenoid, the tightness of that rubber on the moving link won't be noticed unless we pull it by finger. Since it is very fragile just check it by touch and clean it by spray by carb cleaner make it functional. It took my lot of time to find out.

    Nice! Thanks so much for sharing your experience and knowledge. My JD twin-cylinder lawn tractor already has that type of filter so I think I'm good there and I assume the carb has no screen. (has run great for 8 seasons) However, my Troy-built pressure washer has consistent issues where the jet in bowl bolt gets plugged up. It's a yearly chore to remove the bolt and clean it out. Could the paper filter be used to help prevent this? (I haven't paid attention to what type of fuel filter is used - I've never changed it anyway and it's about 5 years old. Maybe it's time? lol)

    Awesome video Dony! Appreciate it. Very well laid out step by step! I would have been totally fooled without your knowledge!! PS, why did it not run poorly from the startup cold in your opinion?

    • @donyboy73
      @donyboy73  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      because the carburetor bowl had gas in it but it couldn't supply enough fuel to it when engine was running

    It's seems so worth it to spend a bit more on quality. So much more serviceable. Just even getting that carb off the machine was ugly. The Kawasaki engine on mine is so easy to work on. Also has proper pump and filter. Never had a carb issue in over 7 years.

    I bet with the symptoms it was having and you seen it was a Powermore engine you knew exactly where the problem or part of the problem was. Do you ever get any outboards in your shop being where your located? Good video. Thanks Dony

    I have a ride-on lawn mower that runs great for about an hour or so. Then it will starts to sputter and stall. I have to let is sit for a short period and then start it up again and it runs fine. I maintain it and know the gas is good, carburetor is clean, spark plug is good, air cleaner is clean. Just don't know why it runs great for a length of time before sputtering. Any suggestions as what to check?

    Hi, good video. BTW, do you know if the torque specs are available somewhere? I have had problems with over tightened bolts and ruined threads too many times and therefore I'd be interested in to find correct specs. It's hard to explain to some inexperienced customer the hand feeling but would be easy to say the exact torq setting.

    Mine Troy Bilt started doing exactly the same thing surging and quits after 10-15 seconds. Replaced the carb with an OEM carb, new oil/filter new spark plug new gas, new fuel lines and filter. And it still does he same thing. Ugh!

  • @davekri1662
    @davekri1662 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    why surge only when its warmed up. you would think a clogged filter would affect it regardless of temp.
