This is the greatest video. It is a pity that Dony did not write it down 6-7 years ago. At that time I repaired my craftsman. With the help of the video from Dony I replaced the camshaft. And with this video, dismantling any engine on the snow blower is just a holiday. Learn from MASTER! Thank you very much.
Great video Don. Would love to see you do a re-engine video of something like a Tecumseh to a Harbor Freight Predator. There's a bunch of them on TH-cam, but none of them have the attention to detail that you put into your videos.
I'd like to second that motion, Even if it is a year later.... I just did a full rebuild of a Tecumseh Snow King, but it took quite a while to secure all the parts.... Its a shame because the Snow King is a great engine, and the blowers they were installed on are normally built well, with lots of life left in them. The problem is finding the proper replacement engine that will be just drop in and go... Would love to see a video on re-powering a Tecumseh snow king powered blower with a good quality & readily available engine.
I could be wrong but it seems that Tecumseh engines have more torque for comparable size engines. I've had a couple Ariens snowblowers that had Tecumseh engines. They seemed to have more power!
@@taftr I don't know. I have a twenty year old craftsman snowblower with a 9hp tecumseh. If it has a hundred hours on it I would be surprised. The rest of the machine still works well but has surface rust on it. The bucket is bent in on both sides even though I straighten it out every year. I did replace the carburetor this year with an aftermarket one because it was leaking gas just sitting there. My point is that the last thing I expect to go wrong is the engine, it's better than the rest of the machine.
Most Tecumseh blows a hole behind the starter and do so from over-revving. The throttle stay stuck wide open and BOOM she goes. Keep the throttle linkage (between the carb and that red button) squeeky clean and well lubricated. I think it is assembled with rivets.
Just completed an engine upgrade (from 7 to 9 hp) on my trusty old John-Deere. What seemed a challenging project turned out to be a quite easy process thanks to your clear and complete instructions !
I have a Murray Blizzard 27" 8HP dual stage snowblower with a Tecumseh engine. Looks almost identical to that engine. I bought it new over 11 years ago, runs like a dream! If the engine ever dies, I'll try and find a new engine for it. Now, thanks to the small engine guru, I know how to replace it!
wow that did look pretty darn easy Don ! Having a good replacement unit made that swap out a breeze :) Side note , I did my 42 ariens deck rebuild yesterday. I could not find a "how to video" anywhere, so I went for it . Ugh the one tip I now know that you would have laughed at me and said " well of course , do that first Bill". "Remove the spindle pulley nut " !!!! "Because Bill if you don't and you snap off the 4 spindle bolts , you have nothing to hold the spindle from rotating "!!!!!! Doing it all single handed was frustrating , it would not have made for a good video , ok a how not to do it video , ha ha !! So I mounted 2 - 2*4's to a wooden table , just wider than the mower blade. Lifted the deck over and placed the free spinning spindle in the home made wooden slot and with a breaker bar , it worked. whew. Did the smarter method on the second spindle , went on and off easy . Changed out the 2 old pulleys with bearings ( much smother spinning than the old ones) . New belt. Pumped in some grease to the new spindles and went off to mow meadows for 4 hours. The spindle mistake added lots of time and frustration , drats. That is why I really enjoy the time you take to make and share your knowledge from your shop life . I always learn something new from you . thank you Don. 2 questions, the 4 each new spindle bolts where 3 line on top . Should I go buy 4 or 5 line bolts now and swap them out ? This might prevent the break off situation in the future? 2nd should I grind off the small length of spindle bolt threads sticking past the bottom of the spindle plate ? Would cutting them flush make removing them easier if spindle service is needed in the future? thank you , Bill "deck smarter now" ha ha
Esti, tu fa bien ca! I love your videos, I think I watched them all, but this is my favorite so far. I have, almost, the same machine with the exact same problem. It's in such good shape that I really want to get it going again. Now, I just need to find a fresh motor.
I found a piece of pipe and made my own 1'' adapter. It worked like a charm. .. Now doing a swap 6hp to 8 hp. Nothin lines up. Have to drill new eng nut holes. Damn the price was so cheap. I couldn't resist... Hoping it works out...but it's too early to tell...Everything is different,, so crossing my fingers on this one...
I stopped using white lithium grease on snowblower friction disk hex shafts. That stuff was hard like a crayon like substance on all 3 of my blowers when I pulled them out for the season this past winter. I had to pain stakingly clean that off and use a small pick to get it out from between the carrier and hex shaft, my shifter would not budge prior. I use a softer grease now, that stuff gets sticky and hard down here in the states in the summer months.
Oh....such a great video! I have the same engine in my snowblower and now I’ve learned how easy it is to swap out the envy, plus perform good preventative maintenance based on your tips.
I love your videos. They are so helpful .Well watching your videos i was able to change the worm gear on my snowblower.KEEP THE VIDEOS COMING I WILL KEEP GIVING YOU A THUMBS UP.
I have a MTD snow-thrower with a Tecumseh Snow King engine that was manufactured in 1991 and it runs as good as the day I purchased it. Sad that Tecumseh is no more it was an awesome engine.
Enjoyed the video. Good job. I watched your video on repairing my string trimmer. As I was working on it my neighbor stopped by while walking his dogs. “You know how to work on these? , Maybe you can get mine started? Now I have another one to work on!!!!!
If more people changed and checked the oil on a regular basis, an engine swap would not be needed! I have a JD1026 dating back to 1986 with a 10HP Snow King and it gets more attention than my 4x4 and is still near showroom condition. These engines also have tons of power if maintained properly so carb cleaning and adjustment is essential! Great Video Donyboy!
Nice job Donny and quick. I have to change an engine for my cousin, he has a Troy Built that he left out in the rain and snow for a few years and now the engine is seized and will not turn at all, I tried with a pipe wrench will not budge at all. I think he may have run it with not enough oil myself. Good job buddy.
I threw a rod once and the piston was seized. put some "deep penetrating catalyst" on the piston head and let it sit overnight and it slid right out. still had to replace the engine (discovered a crack in the crankcase) but I learned a lot about the fiddly bits.
Al b I put a harbor freight 301cc predator on my ariens 1128. Made it through a third, maybe fourth tough maine winter so far. I also put an adjustable high speed jet Needle in for cold operation without any heat shrouding. Left air cleaner in.
donyboy73 hey Dony, ever seen a centrifugal clutch that has “ribs” in the center bore? Using an old Honda GX240 max to build my son his first go kart and and ran into a problem with the crankshaft. The Honda is from an old porta-mole boring system. Any advise on what I should do would be greatly appreciated:)
Will a an older engine mount on a newer one I have 3craftsman snowblower one is almost new but the engine has plastic parts inside I can't get it to run but I have an older 24inch craftman an the engine runs great just the rest of it is worn out I'm thinkin on swappin engine just not sure if the engine mounts are the same and will the pulley line up the pulleys I believe are different ones a v belt other is flat one but it's the engine mounting studs I'm more concerned with I could go mesure it just haven't got around to it yet to many projects on the go lol
Hi, Don, I enjoy watching you videos, I do have a question is it possible to swap from a briggs engine to a Tecumesh engine its a snow king as its often refered to?
Those other hole in the frame, can they be used to mount a higher HP engine? I have a 10Hp eng with a 90mm bolt circle, I wanted to drop in a 20Hp engine that has a 130 to 170mm bolt circle.
Where can I buy a replacement engine for a yard machine 26” I don’t care about the brand just the exact one you have in the video is the one I need my blown engine looks exactly like that identical
Very familiar project, about 8 years ago I swapped out the stock 5hp on my Craftsman that was under powered with an 8.5 Tecumseh I got on EBay, very simple ! The challenge was the dual output. Is there a new dual output option for this machine?
It's hilarious how people say "why aren't you torquing the bolts, you have to". When you work with torques every day you can tell after so long how tight the bolts should be with just a ratchet. Just a question from an amateur, why is it that the motor seems like it is misfiring while it is running? I know they all do it. Great video Don.
You'll have job security as long as people use machines until they stop running from neglect. Check the oil, don't check the oil. The choice is yours as a consumer.
Hey Donny! Long time lurker and great vids, but if I could ask a simple question? I have a B&B MD1024 thrower and it sat for a year with water in the tank and now is nasty. I removed the two studs holding the bracket but it won't give it up. Is there a stud/nut/bolt I'm missing or any suggestions? Any help appreciated. If worse comes to worse I'm just going to drain, in line filter and put cleaned carb back on.
Just wondering if I need a new engine for my Cub Cadet 524SWE that does not run. When I spin the engine with a drill & socket it used to spin freely (but would not start) now it spin freely at first then the engine locks up with a tight spot and turns the drill out of my arm.
