I was born in 1978, a centre-west province of China. I still remember clearly, when I was a little boy, my parents made around 100 RMB/month (15 USD)totally, and we do not have much meat to eat, at that time, almost everything can only be purchased by certain kind of ticket, without ticket, without purchasing. After not many years, I was able to study overseas, and I had lived in western world for few years. Our family can afford overseas holiday annually nowdays, we could do almost everything we want. This is what have happened on me during past 40 years. And if there is so-called brainwash you western people criticized, I thought its my personal experience has shown me the reality. China is not perfect, we still have so many problems to solve, but who doesn't. As human being as whole, I think we really need a better understanding between each other, never judge somebody base on your experience, since that is not your life.

As a Chinese that born after 1990, I agree with many of the points in this video. He pointed out a lot of ideas that I think(I think it is most of us ).We know we have made a lot of great thing, huge economic growth, the huge infrastructure projects, the second GDP in the world, but also we have many shortcomings, such as technology, poverty gap, and so on.The same is true of Western countries, they also have their merits and demerits, we should learn from the strengths of the West.Although the western country always talk about our freedom, our democratic and the people of china has been brainwashed, But I want to say, I don't think I have been brainwashed, this is my choice, I love my country.

To a large degree the globalization in China is westernization. What do Chinese young generations stand for, apart from being consumers? What can Chinese young generations contribute to the world?

Today nearly all people - not just working class - can afford a good smartphone and a decent service contract for it. And not just one per family - usually it’s one per person, even for the poorer people. I could go on and on about so many things that have raised the standard of living and the purchasing power of people in the last 50 years. It is huge.

Their discomfort do not come from the media as it is also mostly controlled by china nowadays but rather from the reality of how they are being treated by the Chinese government. The party always brain wash their people that HK people are disillusion seperationist and hate China. You mention how the British deal with it but that is in the 60s. Nobody think that is right and they did improved a lot and never happened again. You can't tell me China is at British 60s level. One of the biggest reason of the recent protest is from how the hk people are frustrated the hk gov only care about serving China instead of hk people and want to be able to elect its own governor, which China promised. Honestly I don't understand why people in China are so mad that hk is fighting for democracy. Every time I ask someone they tell me "one china" and I am like har??? Who said hk want to separate? Do the people in China knows those separationist are a tiny portion like a 100 people? Hk people get their perception of China's respect on the law from incidents like "My dad is Lee Gon" or Poisonous Baby formula. I know China is improving but the new leader seems to like tighter centralised control more than the last one. So it is hard for the hk people to trust China's law just now. He is totally right about everything. Having lived in China for many years I know this. In the end he poses certain questions with a positive attitude. I think there is a darker side to this "easternisation" though. The difficulties China went through "held it back". There are many similar examples of smaller countries who first went through civil wars and then had a dictatorship. Even though they experienced unprecedented progress during the dictatorship they were held back culturally and their systems were so outdated and incompatible with the rest of the world that when the dictatorship came to an end and they had to catch up they paid for it dearly. China has a unique culture but Its values and systems are not as special and unique as one might think. They are very similar to those everywhere in the world 1000 years ago. The whole world is moving towards a certain direction (and yes sometimes led by the usa). That is the only reason we are living in the most peaceful humane era of human history. China with its power threatens to bring a change that will take the world back to a society much more brutal than western millennials and especially Americans can imagine.

China was built by the global outsourcing phenomenon, tech transfers and the hard work of the Chinese people. The young American failed to mention that globalism and the U.S. as its main engine are in a freefall and are currently in the process of collapsing. The U.S. has become a nation built on debt and it's running out of time. Current asset valuations across all asset classes are being artificially inflated through debt by a financial instrument know as debt margin equity. The US has unfunded liabilities over 10 times the current size of its economy with a dying middle-class tax base. It's not a matter of if it will collapse but when? This will be China's real test as export markets collapse.

This is how the imperialists in the west think, this is in the basis of their mindset. They project their own colonial asspirations to others. This is why they are afraid of Russia and China, because they think that they would do them everything they were doing to other people on the planet.
I am from Serbia. USA bombed the Chinese embassy in Belgrade 20 years ago. Do you think it was a mistake? I think it was a message.
It is time to wake up! Big war is coming. You need to understand who your friends are, and keep them close. I can tell you that Serbia will always be your friend. We will never forget the support of your people. We might be small with a weak army, but we are very well positioned in Europe.

It’s sad that in this century China is being stereotyped as copycat / lack of innovation/creativity yet the truth is China had been the world greatest innovator in ancient times. They’ve invented many sophisticated things that we still use today like first seismometer (2nd Century while the first western description of the device was in 1703), mechanical clock (200 years earlier than the one in Europe), rocket (228AD) compass, movable type printing, textile, paper (it was Chinese who first use toilet paper & create paper money), Go Game (which much more complicated than Chess).....even football n golf games were first recorded in China.
PS : Su Song (1020-1101 AD) was a Chinese polymathic scientist and statesmen, many historians think that Leonardo Da Vinci was actually the western version of Su Song......

White upper-middle-class Americans may not notice a difference between Woodstock and Coachella, but for many other groups, there has been a world of difference. By the same token, there is a world of difference between the center and the periphery in China today. What are our metrics for success? How well we exploit and harm? How well we achieve within global capitalism? Do we think about our ethics as often as we think about our economics?

Middle class there see the real estate as the best investment available to them. They would buy an apartment on the edge of the city, wait 5-10 years for it to be worth 3 or 5 times more and spend that money on 3 or 5 apartments on the new edge of the city. As long as a lot of people keep comming to live there it is a good investment. When they stop there will be a lot of people with apartments they can't sell. Those ghost cities are usually satelite cities. They know that in ten years or so it would be faster for the people to come to the center of the city by train from another city than by car or public transport from its edge. Chinese have even started building those ghost cities in Africa. Just like in China, they are building a lot at the time and then wait for years for people to move in. Those are the long time investments.

I don't know how to make sense of this talk, he just throws questions at the audience, reinforced several steriotypes he said he is trying to break of the Chinese youth, and showed a bunch of economic achievements of China that everybody already knew. What is he trying to present ? I will say that he did think about the great changes witnessed and lived by Chinese Millennials, but he did'nt come to a conclusion of what impact does this had on Chinese Millennials and made them into what kind of person, instead, he throws the question back to the audience. Is he trying to inspire the audience to do the research that he is doing? I think he is . I don't want to think it this way, but if I didn't know better (that this guy is really nervous and didn't deliver what he wanted to), I would presume that he is trying to imply that Chinese Millenials is a group of spoiled, pressured to the verge of collapse, complacent jerks who know you(the west) better than you know them.

In the 2008 Olympics, China (population of 1.3B) defeated the US (population 300M).
In the 2016 Olympics, UK (population of 65M) defeated China (population 1.4B).
Kids grew up under the pressure of the full focus of 4 grandparents and 2 parents are bound to have issues. That's why mental health is an increasing problem in China today.
I'm Chinese and I used to teach in China. Kids there spend way too much time learning about patriotic BS and fake history. The line between real and fake is so blurred the kids don't see it as irrelevant. How is that not brainwash?
