Imagining how travellers would have to speak foreigner language with somebody, how hard it could be to find place and maybe food. So you can help them. And it works in both ways if you want to go somewhere like this guy.
Indeed. I want to go and do this, and it’s easy for many of us including myself to leave comments saying we will ‘now go out and try and explore the world’. But honestly how many of us will end up just forgetting about it or letting the easy route come to us instead and not bother at all, making all of our words hollow. I’m really scared that this will be the case for me. I’m trying to say yes a lot more than I used to, but when it comes to things that require a lot of money, longer working hours or possible language barriers, it really is easy to become demoralised and just let it sink into the back of your mind and continue on as usual, only for that feeling to repeat again a few weeks, months or years later. I only hope I can do even a little bit of this while I can. What will really happy, only time will tell for all of us.
Old person here.......who can in fact confirm this. And it's really depressing when it hits you that you had one life, one shot and you wasted it. Wasted it out of fear of what other's might think of you, of failing, of being wrong, of being alone or from letting others talk you out of it and the mistake of always thinking there will be more time. And it hits really hard when you see other people living the life that you could have.
I am a Japanese girl and I started to travel when I was 19. I've done hitchhiking alone over thousands of kilometers. I use couchsurfing and do work exchange at times. It can be scary at first especially if you are a solo female Traveller. But once you learn how to choose a right host to stay with, right driver to ask for a ride and trust your gut feelings.. You will enjoy this way of traveling. Stay wild and Safe travels!
Hey I saw your comment in a ted video about traveling world I mean how do you do it without visa like without passport of other country how do you cross the border
I'm almost seventy years old And still have that itching in my soul to go places and meet new people, did a lot of traveling in my life (40 countries in 4 continents)my advise to young people, don't let life pass you by,you only live once and after thirty, time goes by so fast and never returns.❤
this resonates with me and as a boy who is turning 35 in a few months i cannot stress how much i've been thinking about this... and i call myself a boy because i have not lived to my full potential! call it a midlife crisis.. im calling it a midlife revelation...
Just a small note. This is all wonderful and amazing, but as a woman most of those choices are a very real threat to safety... it's not even a matter of "you can do it if you are careful" because there is no way to calculate in advance what situation you will be in. Very happy for those who have the chance and priviledge to experience this. Be also mindful of more fragile people on your journey :)
Hmm, yeah to a certain degree. It is risky and unpredictable for everyone though, it’s just a matter of weighing the risk against the possibility of adventure. No one can tell you exactly how dangerous it will be and it’s a very personal choice you have to make before you go on an adventure like this. But I don’t agree that you “can’t do this” as a woman, yeah maybe some things are more risky as a woman, but to be honest I wouldn’t sleep in a park as a man either. You can still find a way to have an adventure, where it’s worth the risk for you. My point is, being a woman is one factor of many in a very complex equation, if you wanna go on an adventure, just find something you’re comfortable with, if it means traveling with a friend, traveling a bit more expensively to sleep in hostels instead of on the street etc. there’s lots of ways to still have an adventure.
@@Jon-Jon-Jon-Jon exactly. I wouldn't sleep in a park either. Indont hitchhike. But I have a isrelian female friend who hitchhiked in guatemala amd mexico and is not in Argentina amd hitchikes. I just bus a cheap bus/shuttle ticket. Being a female def gives another variable but it's just that, another variable. Not an end all be all its impossible to travel alone now bc I know tooooons of solo female travelers who travel like I do (shuttles and hostels or coach surfing)
After watching this video 3 years ago my best friend and I had traveled for 6 months across Europe starting with 15Euros. It was the best decision I have ever made, so many new insights, so many new people so much kindness it was awesome. It had the greatest impact in helping me find out who I am.
I'm just scared of the Scandinavia it can be pretty expensive and cold, so sleeping in tent can be hard. It's quite the challenge, but I'm willing to tackle it
I am hitchhiking around the world and I film my journey daily I have hitchhiked across 50 countries and counting if you want to see daily videos of my journey or want to help me edit my videos into a movie

This video is the reason why I’ve traveled so much the last 5 years. Really opened my eyes. Tom is right, your friends and family will tell you that you’re going to die if you travel alone but that’s just the media trying to scare you.
i watched this video when I was like 17 or something, the concept of traveling the world seemed so distant and amazing, I saw a comment that said "the idea of not traveling the world seems more crazy than traveling it" 23 yo currently watching this from brazil, next week to Chile, life is great ❤
This video is so inspirational. As a high schooler there is a lot of pressure to figure my life out and get a job and career lined up. This is my dream life and I am dreaming of doing this.
+M1X3R I'll tell you one thing 'growing up' the way teachers tell you your supposed to is bullshit, have you ever seen or heard of a person who went straight from school to work and lived a happy life? No, they usually die with many regrets. There really is a line between having enough money to be able to afford things you want and having enough time to actually DO the things that you want. Its all about finding the balance thats right for you, you cant have one side without the other, it just wont work. The weird thing is i wonder why anyone ever uses the phrase 'grow up' or 'what do you want to be when you grow up' like they do anymore, its such a depressing way to look at life
It is the worst , i can't even dream about what he does simply because i have a lame passport , you guys living my life dreams and feeling its not that good

" Indians didn't warn me about anyone....I don't know" That statement......that statement right there made me a little bit proud of being an Indian when I heard it.....just a little bit.
I met many hitchhikers/backpackers while my overland journey across Asia, and surprising, few of them mentioned your name and this particular video as an inspiration or a reason to start their journey. You are one of the reasons I also decided to try hitchhiking. I'm revisiting this video after 3 years now. There is something so inspiring in this video and I really needed it now. Thank you Tomislav. Stay happy wherever you are ❤️
Tomislav is absolutely right about everything! Last Summer I spent 3 months cycling across all of Europe. It was such a joy, people were so awesome, I made good friends, and I have so many amazing stories. When I got home everyone was excited and for 2-3 weeks I told friends my stories, but pretty soon they get tired of your stories. When I travel I feel alive, I feel like a rock star. When I am home I feel like a everyday schmo. Just another face in the crowd. For me there was some post travel depression. I did NOT expect that at all! It was only when I began planning for my next adventure that I began to feel alive again. I learned a lot from my trip. I learned that I can live without a TON of stuff. Everyone is obsessed in US with getting more and more stuff. Screw stuff! Give me adventure and the open road!
YESSSSSS! It's so true!! What you said about the post-travel depression is spot on. I feel like my life is on hiatus in between trips. I love traveling so much that even when things go awry I'm still happy. When you're at home and things go wrong does it get to you? I get so pissed and stressed yet if they happened on a trip it doesn't bother me. I wish I could always be the person I am on vacation. I like him a loooooot better
In less than a month I'll be trekking around Europe. As a 23 year old woman, I think I'll opt for hostels rather than coach surfing or hitchhiking but I look forward to all of the people I'll meet
No offense Paige but I really think its safer for you to stay in hostels than coach surfing. Hitchhiking can be dangerous for both men and women. Travel but use your common sense. Good luck Paige.
That's it. I decided. I don't want to live my whole life as a slave, working for the governments and corporations, feeding the machine that is the system. I don't want my life to be a constant grind for money, achieving "success" by working, working and working until my muscles give up and forgetting every single day of my life. This video and You, Tom, inspired me greatly. Just thinking about all the people I can meet, all the adventures I can experience, all the sights I can see gives me that happy feeling. But the first step to succeeding in this is... getting all the Visas :D
It's sad how most of us have already spent maximum percentage of our lives at particular places, with particular people with never changing perceptions of things around us and died. If you're alive you gotta head out. This has to be one thing you do before you die. Life would be more meaningful and hope I get to make it someday.
3 point summary 1. The world is safer and more welcoming than portrayed. 2. Embracing minimalism makes travel affordable and enriching. 3. Human connections create meaningful and transformative travel experiences.
In about 1984 when I lived in New Mexico I picked up a older couple from England who were hitchhiking around the world. They had already been across Canada and down the US West coast and throughout Mexico. He had his retirement pension sent to banks along their way. They were on their way back to Vancouver and were then flying to Fiji and Australia. I never heard from then again but they sure expanded my concepts of what is possible.
I do travel around the world for 3 years and also hitchhiked in most of south east asia and all this as a solo female traveller. Never had any problems, never felt unsafe. Just go out there and you will see our world is a better place then media or people with non travel experience will tell you. Enjoy your life 😁
And 99.9% of the time you will be just fine, and People You Meet will be good and kind to you, but it only takes one Ax Murderer to ruin your day. Although rare, they do come along once in awhile, so watch out.
22 years I was homeless. I was a busker, a fisherman, fruit picker, chicken farmer, tobacco grower etc, I traveled around and around Australia, by car, bicycle, moped, bus, train, hitchhike, walk etc. I collected cans, went metal detecting for coins....I camped on a remote block of land until Chris Hemsworth bought it for millions!
How many of you are watching this. And feel imprisoned by your current existence? Your 9-5. dead end. Your hated routine. The "same ole same ole" Scientist did research on the probability of a person even being born and it is 1 out of 400 TRILLION!! A rare occurrence . Why are we not using this gift to live happy? Well. I've been rotting away for 2 decades now. Thinking there is so much more to experience besides my sheltered little world. And im gonna sell everything. And travel. In one year i will be able to take the leap. I can always come back to my dead end life. But the pain of sitting here watching the world go buy, and CHOOSING to live in depression has finally taken its toll on me. I haven't really lives since my 20s. And i can no longer abuse this gift of life i was given, Good luck to all of you. And remember. CHOICE is your most powerful weapon
D P I’m the same way. I can’t work a job and live in the same old town for the rest of my life. I’ve went through 6 jobs in the town I live in because as soon as I get a little bit of money saved I quit and go travel for a few weeks.
Late reply I know dude, but you are 100% . There is absolutely no point in Living a life where there is no progress . If you want to take a year out fromyour life get saving and pack a bag and go . The worst thing that can happen is you get a better perspective on life and what you want . You could live in a bubble forever and get no further. So yeah have you managed to get going???
I'm doing this right now. I'm a 32 y/o artist, I finance my trips by doing portraits on the way. 10 countries so far, started in February, been hungry, lonely, homeless but I'm still going strong!
4 years ago somewhere around this time of the year I found this video and after watching it I got inspired and did excactly what Tomislav said and I hit the road I left on February 2016 and was traveling in Asia and Australia for almost 3 years, and that was the best decision that I ever made in my life. So please don't be afraid of the unknown and just hit the road!

16:30 Really like the end of this talk when he talks about the not-so-rosy part of traveling long-term. Even if you keep on seeing all the wonders the world has to offer, it won't make you feel fulfilled all the time. You might find your happiness being mostly affected with the people around you, so it's good to invest in those relationships that matter to you:)
I have always found Indians to be more open minded and kind than the rest of us in general. Much respect for your people. As he said so well though, we’re all the same really. Don’t let our media and corrupt governments around the world blind us.
I love this, in the seventies, and I am a woman, I hitchhiked across the. US. It was the most wonderful experience I have ever had. I was relying on my woman's intuition, on whom I rode with. I heard great stories and in the end I had some great stories to tell myself. Stop being afraid and take a step forward.
I realised I come back here every few years, for no apparent reason. The first time I stumbled across this video, travel was light years distant to a kid who didn't even own a passport. The next few times, I could leap into nearby yet unknown territories, thanks to being in a gigantic country with diverse culture and experiences. Now, as I see this, I am 24, and someone who travelled 11 countries in the last 2 years, half of them completely solo, and taking away incredible memories and inspiring friends along the way. I realise that this talk by Tomislav Perko could just be one of the bigger pebbles that rolled into a profound passion for travel. Thank you very much.
My name is Simon and I'm a 21 french guy. Two years ago I saw this video and I was hoping to travel like that, but after dreaming, I was back to my sad reality : studies that I always hated. I was always saying to me that I will be happy later, but now I have to make sacrifices. And also, I was not ready to quit everything to hit the road, I think I was not brave enough. But now my mind changed, i'm ready to stop my studies because i hate it, and I'm completely ready to quit everything to travel the world. I'm super motivated, and I'm gonna do it in 2022. Before my departure, I'm getting ready : in my mind, in my family's mind, and I want to save a bit of money for visas. And through my journey, I want to prove to the world that we actually can travel the world without ever flying.
This video basically singlehandedly inspired me to travel, when I first saw it I had no idea what I was going to do with my life. Now, when I graduate, I am going to take my best friend and travel, first around the U.S. and then hopefully the world. I cannot thank Tomislav enough for inspiring me to do this.

Don't you have to be teaching certified before you go? I'm going to be surviving on my $683 a month social security by going to ATM machines. Can I do all you mention on that amount? As an American you went to places like Iran and all was okay? I hope to travel all over the world but wonder if customs in various countries want to know how much money you're traveling on, and if you have a means to return to your country, like a universal airline ticket of some kind. Is that true? If I like a place I might live there for a long time, or even maybe not ever return "home" again to the US. I don't own anything, just a few things to store maybe with a friend, about 3 or 4 plastic totes full plus my bike and my guitar and banjo, then leave. Thanks for your encouraging comments.

In the 60's I hitchhiked across Canada and the USA, then around Europe, then overland to India, then through East, Central, and South Africa, then motorcycle from Canada to Panama and back, then Kombi van working around Australia. Chance meetings along the way led to a career in the oil exploration business that kept me travelling from New Guinea to the North Sea and from Alaska to the Amazon, now settled in Australia. That was before the days of couch surfing or even packpacker hostels, so slept real rough most of the time. Never had any problems with safety. What a fantastic experience! Hardest part is to start out, then just keep going and it'll get easier and you'll get somewhere.
@@danielwhyatt3278 same here i want to travel to california in usa next year
Old person here.......who can in fact confirm this.
Not just 20years from now. Dude, I’m 25 and I’ve got several things I’m disappointed I didn’t do or at least try doing in my previous years
I am a Japanese girl and I started to travel when I was 19.
That sounds amazing! Wish i could do it too in the future! 😊

Hey I saw your comment in a ted video about traveling world I mean how do you do it without visa like without passport of other country how do you cross the border
I'm almost seventy years old And still have that itching in my soul to go places and meet new people, did a lot of traveling in my life (40 countries in 4 continents)my advise to young people, don't let life pass you by,you only live once and after thirty, time goes by so fast and never returns.❤

can u give me a idea how to survive in tourism industry.Right know I am zero
this resonates with me and as a boy who is turning 35 in a few months i cannot stress how much i've been thinking about this... and i call myself a boy because i have not lived to my full potential! call it a midlife crisis.. im calling it a midlife revelation...
Hey what about the passport or visa things guys
You need money for those.
Damn, that's sad :(
I know women who back pack alone across the world and hitch hike and coach sirf.... not saying it isn't harder and more risky but some girls do it too
Hmm, yeah to a certain degree.

Give me adventure and the open road!
chris meadows how did you do it
I plan on one day travelling aswell, just need to figure everything out first
that's a great idea to travel europe
screw stuff ...get experiences ..ur so right
Paige T, Good luck with your travelling.
How did it go?

No offense Paige but I really think its safer for you to stay in hostels than coach surfing. Hitchhiking can be dangerous for both men and women. Travel but use your common sense. Good luck Paige.
Best of luck, I plan on doing the same.

This video and You, Tom, inspired me greatly.

It's sad how most of us have already spent maximum percentage of our lives at particular places, with particular people with never changing perceptions of things around us and died. If you're alive you gotta head out. This has to be one thing you do before you die. Life would be more meaningful and hope I get to make it someday.

3 point summary
"No matter how long you wait, the right ride will come" :')

Yeah , seems like he loved India
Depends on the road. If there's just one car that passes you every hour it would be a long wait.

This is the most entertaining TEDX video seen by me...!!!
You rock: Tomislav
& I hope nobody tried to kill you here in India...!!! :)
+Xitiz Pugalia thanks, and no - nobody tried to kill me in India :)
+Tomislav Perko We are friendly people :) Glad you liked it here :)
+Tomislav Perko Im glad! Im an environmentalist and I think Im going to go and travel with a purpose, but i think i will be stoned and laughed at.. misunderstood... What do you think? I want to actually go and volunteer everywhere on earth...clean it up as much as I can..
Parikshit Chitnis I was stoned most of the time too :p
I meant it literally stonned. Like people throwing stones at me. But yeah...your comment also makes sense.. Might as well be "stoned".. Haha
First world privilege of holding strong passport. You can go easily to any country of course paying Visa fees.
For us, having developing country's passport. We have to show bank statements, hotel bookings, round trip flight and other 10 kg of paperwork because people fear we'd become illegal immigration.
Edited:FYI, if we want American or EU travel visa as Myanmar traveler, we have to show business and 100k USD in the bank. You're welcome!
on top of that let's see a brown guy with a beard get a ride for free!
So true
Bro sorry to say but 3-4k$ is enough for bank statement for getting visa and all other part of document is true.
@@alwayssporty8102 $3k-4k doesn't exactly count has "'having no money"'. Plus, many people from developing countries don't have $3k-4k just lying around in the bank.
@@arhamfarman6364 you didn't got my point he exaggerated and said we need to show 100k$ in bank statement but that isn't the case 3-4k$ is more than enough although 2k$ is enough to get a visa approval.
I’m over 60 female. Traveling the world volunteer work at beautiful resorts, houses, Asia, Europe, teach English, pet sit, best time of my life, where ever they tell you not to go I GO. And I left the jet set world behind. This is more meaning than anything. Next place Mexico to rich beautiful safe areas, take my dollar there, and be rich. More gangs in Oakland than other world. Oh and they all have education and speak 2 languages outside the USA.
elana vlahandreas in advance, welcome to India if you will travel, must travel ..... It is said that if you ever wants to travel whole world in one country then travel India. You can find whole world in India. . . .idk famous person said this about India.
Hi Elana! I am 64 but bad back problem and can't stand in front of a class without soon my back hurting a lot. Can you teach sitting and standing often? Thanks for your encouraging comments.
elana vlahandreas - Hi Elana, I'm the same age and would love to do what you are doing, but I feel it's too dangerous. Why don't you write a book? I'd be the first to buy it! Good luck with your travels✌
elana vlahandreas ROCK ON MAMA! You’re an inspiration to ALL generations! ,)

it's hard for me to live this long awaited dream .. my passport "Iraqi" sucks I need a visa for everything , my religion "Islam" makes alot of people uncomfortable or even a potential threat and being a female makes me an easy target if I travel alone .. the only way to do it is to share this journey with someone .. so I'm waiting for the right person to come :) !

I’ve listened to over 50 ted talks, but this is my absolute favorite of them all. Maybe it’s because I love to travel, probably.
Really good you deserve a big applause👏👏👏
Just makes one realize, there is beauty, in everything, everyone, everyplace and every situation. From the back of a truck with 50 people, to and old rail car on the floor. This video is about making do with what you got, not what you hope to have, sometime in the future, that may never happen. One of the most inspiring films on the You. Thank you.

Zack Tu Nan Zing Hang yeah that’s totally correct
I feel so sorry for females cause it's so much more difficult and constantly on guard cause so many men get stupid ideas when they find a lone female hitchhiking, so need to couple with a male partner..... It's heartening to hear that he can still do that style of travel these days. His tips and guide to hitchhiking technique are spot on. You need to open the gregarious and entertaining side of your self and it brings the same from others wherever you go. Go for it!
After 35 years of traveling, I can identify very well with coming home, and feeling that no one can identify with who you are or where you have been. I have never gotten used to trying to explain somewhere. I have been to, someone who has never been anywhere. The eyes glaze over and they just phase out. The only time that all changes is when I cross paths with another has traveled as I have done.
Indians are very friendly in nature and we love everyone 😍 🇮🇳
I'm Indian and I can, with confidence, tell you this:
Either a. Earth has two India's.
Or b. Either you, or I, have somehow managed to establish successful communication across not-so-parallel realities.
Either way, one thing is certain. The India you live in and the India I live in are COMPLETELY different.
