One of the best things I've done at the end of my garage sales is to offer items for free. Generally I hold sales on Thurs and Friday all day, then on Saturday from 8-12. I run an ad that at 2pm everything is FREE. I also put up a big sign that says EVERYTHING FREE. Between noon and 2 I just pull inside any items that I don't mind holding onto for the next sale. It's amazing how much people will haul away for free. And much less for me to haul away to donate.

Yes! Set a box or table out of all the FREE items towards the end so you can get them gone!

Have a meal plan for the host(s). You do not want to scramble for lunch on the big day. Nor do you want to have to start cooking dinner when its over and you are exhausted. If you decide to do take out, order ahead and designate somebody to go get it. Use your crockpot. Do not be distracted and Hangry. Figure out shifts so people know when they will get a break.

my best advice.... if you are spending the time putting signs out.... WRITE BIG!!! nothing worse than a sign out that you can't read the sale date!

One tip..put your garage sale signs away after your sale..nothing worse then wasting your time following a sign just to find out that there isn’t a sale:)

You will sell more if you price everything with stickers and signs. People would rather pay a little more for an item, than have to ask you what every item costs. A lot of them will actually walk away before they have to ask you the price, especially if they’re interested in multiple things.

Becky you are spot on with ALL your tips. You took the words right out of my mouth. I have had many, many garage sales and prepared, planned, advertised (use all free apps and online platforms - I have used 3 different craigs list accounts and changed up titles and pictures to reach broader audience), bright, large and easy to read signage, "staged" like items, clothing hung on retail rounder rack (I bought at a garage sale YEARS ago for $8), priced ALL items, have everything ready to go first thing in the morning - early birds are inevitable (especially if you advertised properly WITH pictures), fanny packs on, shopping bags and packing materials, ready, set, open the garage door, turn on the lights and put on some nice easy listening music to keep your shoppers there longer. I have done neighborhood sales, multi-family sales, single sales, and finally a BIG MOVING sale in 2019 after 20+ years in our home and empty nesters. This was our final sale as our new neighborhood does not allow garage sales, which is fine with me because they're a lot of work to be successful. I only had a sale if I thought I could make at least $500 since they are so much work, so quantity is a must. People love 50 cent and $1 dollar items. I hate clutter and "storing" items forever so I usually had at least one garage sale a year. Before online selling was a thing, garage sales is all we had to make money on our stuff. Since moving in 2019 I have sold tons more on FBMP, Ebay & Posh. I just can't keep things I don't use or like anymore. Just keep selling!

You’re right - garage sales are SO MUCH WORK, so it’s worth doing the preparation it takes to make them profitable. It’s so cool to hear about all your garage sale experience!

I changed the way I do my annual sale last year and I actually naturally did many of these tips but in years past I did not. The quality of my items were the same and many from the year before b/c I knew I had so much money sitting there.
In 2022, I only marketed for like 2 days prior. I was unorganized. Clothes not sorted. Boxes too low on ground. Didn’t price everything and didn’t put into categories. And fell short of really seeing what big items I could lug out and only placed those in the ad but not outside. Thinking people would ask about it. 2022 made like $50. 2023. Made over $700 with the same stuff.
And I sold clothes for $1 a piece. Shoes for $2. Brandname- like Uggs for $5 and leather jackets for $10.
While we made a to. Of money in 2 days-
The real joy came from seeing people astonished at getting amazing deals and so happy with stuff we just classified as junk.
I donated the rest after moving everything to $1 and posting an extra few hrs for people to take advantage of that- I had people RETURN for the $1 sale.
I also did stuff a bag for $5.
In planning mine for this year now. I usually do it this weekend (Memorial Day) but I’m going to put more time into getting everything out and hopefully do even better!!!
Ps. We were only a family of 7 and not a multi family sale.

After living in a home for 29 years, I am downsizing to a one floor, 2b/2ba which is awesome. Notice I said 29 YEARS. I have stuff, it overwhelms me daily trying to figure out what to do with it......until now!! My friends convinced me to have a yard sale (construction for a sidewalk on my street so can't have it here) at a Senior Center nearby. I regretfully said okay. Long story short, your post helped settle my monkey brain to think clearly, put things in perspective, and an idea of how to get rid of as much as I can. I THANK YOU FOR THAT!!!! I'm also going to make $5 Grab Bags.....no trash but little things like clippers still in the package, notebooks, etc. Well worth the $5.

Hi Becky, I just want to thank you for your tips! It’s been many years since I’ve had a yard sale. I heard my HOA are inviting our community to join in a rummage sale in our clubhouse I got excited to Declutter! I reserved 2 eight foot tables. Then I looked on TH-cam and found you for the 1st time. We went from the garage to the kitchen & clothes closets & packed boxes as you suggested keeping like with like. I got tags on most everything and added info on electronics etc..I also priced much lower then I originally planned per your instructions, this REALLY worked! 🙌🏼 I also had lots of my Mother’s custom jewelry as she passed almost 2 years ago. At first it was hard to let go…however when I saw the joy in the people’s faces walking away with an affordable treasure I felt my Mother would of been happy too! One last thing your tip on greeting people with “Good Morning” really set the tone for people to linger longer and buy more! I can’t thank you enough!
    💸💐
    Best wishes, Silver 🙏

Thank you, this video is so helpful! It’s been a while since I’ve done a garage sale & I’m trying to get one together, so very timely!
One tip to others: if you have many items of a specific size or brand (vintage Abercrombie size M/8 for example or Lane Bryant size 18-20/2X, put that in the ad so people whose size that is will see it & come get it!

ABP - Always Be Pricing. What do I mean by that? AS THE YEAR progresses and you find things you want to sell - have 4 boxes READY to go marked with the words "Garage Sale". When you come across an object you want to sell and PRICE it...and put it in the box. When the sale hits, your boxes are FILLED and READY to go. Prepping for a garage sale is a year-round event - not something you do the week before.
And yes - I also do "fleas" too...so I am ALWAYS ready to go and my boxes are always STOCKED and bursting with stuff I want to get rid of.
Another tip - Collectibles don't sell as much at Garage sales...but they do SELL at Flea markets. General yard sale stuff typically only sells at garage sales.
I do agree....I am up at 5:00Am and I pre-set 99% of the sale the NIGHT before. I am usually ready to take money by 7:30 or EARLIER. EArly-birds are chomping at the bit to spend their money....and I'm happy to TAKE IT.
Here's the most important tip - IF they are looking at something expensive - BE ready to take Paypal. At the fleas, my sales have doubled as of late simply DUE to the fact that I now take Venmo, Paypal, etc.

Great tips as always! One more: If you have a lot of glass/ breakables/ "delicate" items that should be handled with care, please don't crowd those on a small table, shaky surface or really low to the ground etc. That would be a disaster waiting to happen. Don't ask me how I learned this one LOL

I love garage sales! Hosting them and going to them.
Totally agree with the price your items tip. I almost never buy things without prices and if the entire sale is unpriced I just say thanks and leave pretty quickly. Also, this sounds counterproductive, but don’t have your items TOO organized. Keep everything nice and easy to sort through and see, but not so neat that people feel weird digging through it. I went to a sale once that it looked like she folded everything with a folding board and had the clothes on top of each other like a store. They were on narrow shelves with not much space between them and I didn’t feel comfortable messing them up enough to actually see what they were. They also had the rolling rack overstuffed so you couldn’t flip through the hangers to see in between. It looked beautiful, but not shoppable!

    • @beckyparkco
      @beckyparkco  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

This is such a good point too! You want your garage sale to be SHOPPABLE, so a little mess is ok, and hovering over your shoppers is a definite no no lol

One tip.. cheap money to make change with in a safe place and also keep the money that you're making in a safe place and keep track of the money that you're making you might need some of it to turn around and give someone change..
As far as things you know you should part with if someone makes you an offer lower than the posted Price consider the items that you got for free that you put out which sold..
And/or how well you are doing in making that sales agreement.

Great tips Becky! My neighbor & I held a yard sale last year & planned it on the Friday & Saturday before a scheduled pick up from Purple Heart. It was so nice to be able to box up the unsold items on our porches & have it wisked away on Monday. Our sale was fairly successful & we each only had a few boxes for pick up. It was so convenient to plan it that way!

12:38 ? You must live in a place that allows people to put up a sign somewhere other than their own yard. Garage sales where I live are practically shut down. You can't have but one sign, you can't have more than like 2 or 3 sales per year and you can't have more than one sale in 3 or 4 months. And you have to pay the city for a permit.

Great tips and thanks. I live in a big city and many of the streets turn into sidewalk sales. I don’t usually go to them bc mamy go there to sell stolen items. But I neede a few things and didn’t want to pay retail last weekend and found those items and used and not stolen from the store.
It was not very organize with over a hundred sellers tgat didn’t have to pay a fee and technically illegal but the police turn a blind eye to.
So if you look carefully, out of the 100 sellers, you might find 5 to 10 items that’s going for much less than it’s worth. I saw a few pairs of women’s Manolo Blanik, Helmet Lamg New sweat hoodie among the adidas and Puma new clothing.
So that’s my take on city street sales in my city and not the suburban garage sale. Also, many in the city are low income and struggling and not just make money to be able to pay for their kids ballet classes and more in survival mode. Hard times for many that are stuck in the city and don’t have the means to leave.

Where do you get small denomination bills for your garage sale?

      Your bank.

@@sonyasonya9047 Bummer, I use ALLY bank and there are no in-person banks, only ATMS with larger bills. That's ok, I'll think of something.

When I have a garage sale, I always have a cooler full of ice and canned soda/bottled water for sale for like $1 and some individually packaged snacks like little Debbie’s for $.50. I always sell Tim’s of that type of stuff at the checkout. Or people who didn’t buy anything else will stop and buy those things.
Also I live in a lower income area. So I have my garage sales at my sisters house because she lives in bougie neighborhood lol. I can ask a bit more for things and there tends to be less bargaining on prices.

@@beckyparkco some TH-cam videos offer hi good morning. so the transcript on TH-cam can be turned on in your settings. so basically it is the written word of what the narrator is saying in the video. 😀 great video btw !

Advertise? Are you kidding? I live in a small town too and just putting out signs the same morning we get totally overwhelmed with mobs of customers. I wouldn't want anymore!
The worst thing is having dozens of people mobbing you with questions and offers etc. all at once. Way too stressful.

Check in your community to see if charities will pick up your leftover items. In our community Restore (by Habitat for Humanity) will pick up.

Maybe this will tell me something new, that isn't just common sense like tip 1, 2, 3, 4
Combine with others, keep track of what belonged to who, advertise with signs and online, put up signs, nope...
Hang clothing on sturdy rack or box it..
Don't throw stuff on the grass, lol..
Someone needs to do videos on how to make interesting videos with NEW information..
    Just my opinion..
