    Beautiful clear blend job. This really saves alot of time and materials. The guy that used to work for me had worked for Mercedes in their paint shop. They did it the exact same way. Thanks for sharing this information. Take care.

    This was great and it cleared up a lot of my uncertainties seeing how you used sanding to make the blend look smooth. Thanks!

      Good job well done.
      Basically what your saying is only use top coat on the repair area, not on the blend area?
      On the repair you used 500 then 800 and so on...
      In the blend area rather than using 1000 could you not of used 3000 all the way to the blend area?!?

    A great explanation of much derided process, when done correctly like this the results speak for themselves. As you say Gabi think out your process before starting the repair, know where you want all stages to be and using good gun control be precise in relation to your prepped areas. Keep up the great work, feliz ano nuevo hermano.

    Thanks great info and ill put the info to use. I need to dust in some poly clear where i sprayed it a little light or not at all on base with hardener. I plan on using the cardboard method for a soft edge and wet sanding the over spray. The clear is now 24 hrs old. Ppg says you can topcoat with scuffing after 24. Like any time whole panel or can you spot? Well see. Full restoration 66 chevelle on my channel whole rest of the paintjob is really good other option is a full wet-sand reclear. This car wont see more than 10 days outside a year. Great stuff thankyou for all your videos i watched and how they help build confidence. A 66 chevelle is a big canvas!

    So....
    800 grit on repair and base paint area.
    1000 grit on transition area where clear coats ends and 3000 grit area begins.
    3000 grit area and edge of the clear coat is covered with blender.
    Absolutely no base on the transition and blender area.
    I think I got that correct? I have a small bumper repair I want to DIY. This video definitely helps.

    Why not just west sand the spot use a fine line paint pen to touch up and polish the area to help blend? It wouldn't be perfect, but it wouldn't be noticeable on a scratch so low. You would have to be low and within a foot of the car to even notice. That's a lot of prep work for something so small

    In the shop where I worked to learn paint and body we did what they called a “ burn “ very similar to what you did there but we didn’t use blender , the problem we had with a burn was after it was buffed our it looked great but a few months later the blend area would show back up .

    • @MOTIVATEDPAINTERS
      @MOTIVATEDPAINTERS  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +MrFireman164 right yeah. Blender helps with that

    • @fwh79FOXR6
      @fwh79FOXR6 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No it doesn't... the blend area returns because the clear melter/blender solvent has no UV protection. It will fail sooner or later. Do not do a repair like this if you work at a shop that has a lifetime guarantee. This is how you repair a 15 year old junk car in a driveway. Not the way a newer benz should be repaired. Turnout great, but it will end up failing over time.

      You're welcome. I hear ya man... been in the industry for 20 years, painting for the last 14 years now. Gotta love the... shop management, owner(s), fellow employees, insurance companies, customers, paint or material reps, missing time on the sheets, insanely low labor rates (by the way... I love how used paint thinner is classified as "hazardous waste"... where is my HAZARD PAY??? Keep breathing that poison!), being told I can "make it up in volume" when I explain that there is not enough repair time on a sheet, hearing about how a customer has run out of their rental and need their car back asap (like it's my fault that they didn't get rental coverage... way to be an adult customer with no rental coverage), cycle time, MATERIAL COSTS (I don't set the pricing on materials... sorry guys, I just paint the car), how I need to come in early and stay late (which bodymen almost never do, which is also usually WHY the shop needs me to stay late. Bodymen love to bring cars over on thursday and friday so... I can just stay late to make up for their short comings concerning time management while they go home to their families at 5:00), and all the other things you can't control/constantly lose money on that are not your fault, even though everyone thinks it is. Oh yeah... and you have to have the artistic TALENT to paint a car without messing it up on top of all of that! You did a great job in this video and I hope you are being taken care of where ever you work. Happy holidays to you and your family and good luck to you in 2018. Sorry about my rant... this industry really knows how to make my blood boil some times. I'm sure you and many of your subs know exactly what I'm talking about. But hey guys... any monkey can paint a car.

    Hello Mr. Merino I have been watching your videos for some time, great information! Perhaps you can answer a question for me. I am trying to figure out how to touch up some custom stripe work on my car, the base color is red obsession and the stripe is pearl white both are GM colors. I have sanded the damaged area with 600 and the surrounding area with 1500 and further out with 2500 grit. How long should I wait once the base is painted to tape of for the stripes?
    Please let me know! Thanks!

    you need to fade out the clear the same way you fade base if you stop the clear in a line eventually as the paint gets older you going to see the clear line. how i was taught from ppg,sikkens an penta paint seminars is you need to fade out the clear the same way how you spray the blue.you put your two coats of clear normal but you fanning out the clear edge you not stopping at a line .then you mix enough clear hardener ,reducer add the same among of blender to the mix clear be like 1 to 1 mixture by doing this you thinned the clear down you then fan out the clear edge again then you take fade out thinner an just fan out the over spray of the clear. not sure if you understand this way but all this can be done an you not even crossing the corner of the bumper doing this way years now with no clear line. i use sikkens SRA FADE OUT THINNER AN SIKKENS BLENDING AGENT

    Gotta say, thank you for your effort. I dont understand how it makes sense to do such a big blend on a car a $100,000 plus AMG. Lets say the owner is stupid enough, and someone has lied to him, and convinced him a blend is the same as doing it properly. Then his got to be stupid enough to convince, to be happy with a touch up. It actually would make more sense. That only needed the smallest touch up paint. Mix the base, put few coats of clear, obviously with harder, quick sand, and buff. The fact that the rear bar will never match were it now meets the body due to it being painted edge to edge, is a bigger problem than having a smalltouch up. You showed so much technique and finesse, to blend in a bar on an AMG, im sure you could of done just as well with the colour match touch up. Usually, in this case, the customer is told that the whole bar is getting done, we will paint your car in a booth and bake it, hence why its going to cost you so much Sir, and they pay what it would usually cost to remove, paint and refit. " :) So a simple touch up, isnt going to make as much money as putting the whole car in a booth for a blend job.

      +zay gomez hey brother I usually look at the chips and go from there. I have a playlist on white pearls you might find helpful. I rarely tint them but just look for the best chip. But if you are having issues with it beeing to bright you can leave half of the white out if the formula and go from there.

  • @jamesfields6835
    @jamesfields6835 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Why? On the car with a clear blend?why not take it off and paint the whole thing? I get the cost but the quality will be 100% ppg will not guarantee any clearcoat blend. And they are 100% guarantee to fail over time.

    • @johnp82
      @johnp82 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why exactly do they fail? I read somewhere that as long as you keep the base coat overspray away from the blend area and make sure the clear coat is fully cured before buffing, then it will never fail.

    • @jamesfields2079
      @jamesfields2079 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do what you have been told to a black car on the bumper or pillar. Wherever. If you blend the clear and polish it out it will look great. But over a few months/ year the clearcoat will fail. Uv protection is obtained by mills. You thin out the clearcoat you thin out its life span.

  • @johnp82
    @johnp82 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've heard that a clearcoat blend can start to become visible a few months/years down the road. Is that true?

      Wow thanks for the quick reply, you’re awesome! The whole car is wet-sanded to 2000G and the blend will be sanded to match, then compounded together. Should I bother with blending spray at all? Thx so much for your valuable time..!

    • @MOTIVATEDPAINTERS
      @MOTIVATEDPAINTERS  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes you should but you can always do a test panel on an old part and see how it would work

      I couldn’t get blend spray so I used reducer with your technique, it worked out really well and will finish perfectly. Also I never thought to purposely blow away from the repair with both base and clear, what a difference! Thanks again man
