The X-Men theme is what's selling me on this as a fan of the 90s cartoon. Plus even though there are no expansions there's some custom content out there with new characters like Nightcrawler, Bishop, Cable, and plots like The Legacy Virus.
In the showdown, where does it say you have to do both objectives on a side. It says you put successes at the bottom until equal to players -1. So on left or right mission, you would only have to do one.
Hope you enjoy it, though Colin and I both didn't like it. he sent it to me for the review, cause he wanted it gone, and I gave it away a week or two later ;) - Mike
Thanks for the playthrough. I played solo last night and forgot about not having to complete the treat icons on the mission icons if I wasn't in that threat area yet.
Thank you for this very informative and simple to understand video. I just purchased the game (plus the mat) after watching this video. New subscriber here!
Rolling a pool of dice makes a lot more thematic sense for a Lovecraftian game than a Marvel game. Plus, in Elder Sign you use mostly the same dice pool every time and you lose a die from your pool each time you fail a task on an adventure card, so the tension continually rises as you work on an adventure card. It's no surprise that this game is currently sitting at a 6.5 out of 10 rating on BGG, while most good to great games typically range from 7.5 to 8.5.
Given that there are boardgamers on BGG that actually hate dice I trust their pretentious opinions about as far as I can throw Hulk. But I can see where this mechanic may not work for heroes. I will try it since I grew tired of Elder Sign and its awful rules. There is always ebay if it sucks
@@roflcopterplays3435 I recorded a review and should be posting it in a week or two. But spoilers - Colin didn't like it and sent it to me, and I don't like it and am going to give it away or sell it. So in short, some good ideas, but poor execution. This one is not recommended. - Mike
I knew it was similar to Elder Sign, but I also see a bit of Arkham 3rd with the scenario cards. Although this was the intro scenario, I was surprised how much the game snowballed. It seemed like the victories just kept compounding, but if you lost a mission, the setbacks would compound too.
Yeah, tiny text saying 01A seems silly, but there is only one card called. Avowed Dream, so it’s really a non issue… Just an FYI. During the last few turns you took, you could have still assisted a Phoenix. The rules (page 10) state that when a hero becomes the active hero, you can choose to be assisted or not. So you could have still had X24 assist Phoenix, which would have made it a touch easier. Not that you needed it, but wanted to bring this up in case a new player was watching, they would know that you could do this. Cheers and thank for the handy play through!
Thanks for the playthrough Colin. I was really looking for an in-depth look on Mutant Insurrection. I am still on the fence on this one. I have all the Elder Sign content and still wondering if I might enjoy this one enough to justify another purchase of almost the same game as ES. The dumbed down features don‘t really help this decision either.
The game is definitely easy. Playing through all 8 scenarios on normal I lost twice, by threat both times. The final scenario is cool and challenging though, but for a serious challenge you might need to be play on hard.
I really enjoy this game, but I agree that it’s more of a shell of game. An expansion or two could make this great though. The story/plot mechanics are fun. (And 3 heroes is almost a must for the game to be more fun.)
I play this game with my dad and have fun! I'm glad you won but I think you might have done the end wrong. The rules to us seemed like it was saying completing an objective gives you a token, not fully beating the mission. So playing with 2 people you only need to complete one line on each card. That makes it a lot easier though so maybe you are right!!
@@OneStopCoopShop too bad! It seems easier than elder sign, which is not bad. Elder sign, especially the story expansions, (Alaska, Egypt, the Deep) are extremely difficult in my opinion and while I like the story mechanics, luck is never on my side. That's why I enjoy the Arkham horror card game much more. If X-men is a bit easier I might get this one, even if it lacks additional expansions for now.
Asmodée/FFG are turning the MU into a games for simpletons franchise. Not a critique on those playing of course, but the games are so easy. Worst offender Marvel Champions where you are literally going through the motions to win, somehow they've come up with something even simpler. Pass. :/
@@OneStopCoopShop I agree, but I also agree with a comment you made during the video. Other (better?) games have been crying out for reprints and expansions. Your example is a good one, but look at the popularity of Runebound, Imperial Assault, Descent even Heroes of Terrinoth, all these examples require reprints. Outer Rim at least one expansion introducing a viable solo mode. All ignored, Asmodee are turning to the popular market, whereas FFG are/were known for producing immersive games with plenty of replayability. I bought MC up to Ant-Man, but it's just not challenging enough and repetative, when the only way to make it more difficult is to draw an extra encounter card, suspicion is that the whole thing was overlooked in the design. I'm even thinking of selling the whole MC collection but I'm holding out as I don't want to do it on a gut reaction. They would make a killing on reprinting Unbreakable Bonds for Runebound, I was one of the lucky ones, for all those that want a good solo experience you must have it. It is proof that they can adapt a game, as they did also with Fallout.

Totally glad you are excited for it!!
Looks rather simple, but the X-Men theme makes it a must-buy... Was waiting for a Playthrough of this since last summer, thank you 😁👍
Glad to help and I got you enjoy it!!!

Oh really? I thought each card had a success requirement. I will check!
I think you would need 1 success for each mission. You dont have to do both objectives to count as one success.
Saw the review, thought I would hate it.
Saw the intro vid, thought I'd consider.
Saw this, now I want to play

@@OneStopCoopShop DOH! thats not good. I wonder if in typical FFG fashion it takes two expansions to fix it.

I'm with you... I was hoping for more which could happen in an expansion but.... I'm not willing to wait ha! I think elder sign is the way to go!
@@OneStopCoopShop Agree again Colin, I wouldn't seperate from my Elder Sign collection for anything.
I sold my elder sign I'm a comic book fan . Depends on what genre you like and I'm Arkham'd out enough for me lol
You breezed through that so easily no problem at all barely even an inconvenience

I got that reference, Justin.
Re-theming your dice game with a superhero theme is TIGHT!
- Mike
I think having love connection is what made this easy. Both characters were rolling as extra die.
Cool playthrough. I have a question. If you assist with colossus on wolverine how do you get the 5 red die? The game only comes with 4 red dice??!?
I think you lose one then! So don't do it!!
@@OneStopCoopShop There was a ruling from FFG that if you cannot take a dice of desired color you choose another one you like.

When does the failure trigger? When the active hero finishes or both heroes? If the active hero triggers it, didn't you miss the trigger?
After all heroes activate at that mission!

Do you have the game organized by story and showdowns together?
Colin didn’t enjoy the game and culled it almost immediately, so I don’t know how he had it organized, sorry!
Is this game similar to thanos rising? If so which do you prefer? The structure (in terms of missions and Showdowns) like too many bones
I much prefer this game to thanos rising! You have scenarios and many more characters to play.
So basically Elder Sign but with Marvel
Yup! And a few changes like the assist and different dice
Could you play a different mission with the other heroes?
If I really liked it yes but i already put it on my sell pile sadly

Quite a brain dead game with 2 heroes. Even tiny epic series have more depth than this.
