  • In this video, we’re showcasing our top list of monohull sailing yachts over US$ 250,000, with their average market price and special features. This will be the first episode of a four-part weekly series on monohulls, so stick around to see our top choices.
A monohull follows the original sailboat design with the classic single-hulled template. Monohull sailing yachts, in particular, are built to ensure optimum control over flat, calm, rough, or unpleasant water conditions. Although the popularity of catamarans has increased in recent years, the decision for some to choose a monohull vessel can be quite a philosophical one. Monohull yachts provide plenty of feedback while sailing, giving passengers a full sense of the wind, waves, and the environment around them.

As a sailing instructor I have the privilege of sailing different yachts. I would say that many names are missing in this list unless the list is about the cheapest for their size.
4 out of 5 would certainly not make it in my top 5. Missing:
The Scandies (X yacht-Najad- Hallberg, the last two are maybe too expensive for most but X is mid price and performance is remarkable)
The Italians (Grand Soleil- Solaris -Italia )
    More Germans (Hanse -Dehler)
The better French boats including all the aluminium marvels.

For me, the Jeanneau sun odyssey 440 is my current top of the list for my Next Boat, with some customisations, not expensive either, they become perfectly acceptable bluewater yachts, if they are not over Canvassed. Shoal Shaft is an acceptable 5'2", which is important for many areas plus 4 gently sloping companionway steps, and enough handholds for the companionway and to and from the forecabin, are cheap enough to get right. Yanmar diesel is direct drive too, Fir me, cheap but worthwhile customisations are replace all aluminium Mast fittings and Cleats, with 316 Stainless Steel, and behind the standard option Sorayhood, a custom 316 Stainless strong Rear arch, for Solar panels, a wind generator, plus the strength for powered dinghy Davits, along with a mounting bar for antennas, a bit pricey, but not too bad normally, with a Bimini to connect to the Sprayhood, as full Cockpit Sun Protection is critically important. If not going Bluewater, the Standard option Cockpit Bimini is perfectly acceptable. Another not cheap, but worthwhile custom option, is to replace the standard engine alternator (the 57hp engine upgrade isv orthwhile for this), with the Balmar XT 250 amp alternator, with over 100 amps at tickover. Worth having even with Solar and wind, to help get the maximum charge cycles out of batteries. tankage changes needed for bluewater imho, are reduced Water due to Watermaker, and more diesel to increase range with Yanmar's excellent fuel economy at sensible engine loadings. I'd go for the 3 Cabin layout and strip out the port aft Cabin, so as not to get the lazarette straight into the Workshop 2 Cabin version tbh, as with lots of electronics plus the main large House battery bank in there, I want to keep any water ingress impossible via that route tbh. Other than that, and a full shakedown Cruise to ensure everything is working as intended, followed by a full service and checkover, the Boat should be ready to head anywhere. PS, no Generator or built in air conditioning for me, though forced air heating species like 2 Cabin version would be handy to beat Condensation. AC for me is 2 x portable AC, cheap and effective, with dehumidifier mode. One front of Cabin by galley and foreberth, the other by the Stern Heads to give full coverage below decks. both easy positions for drainage of water output into the heads etc.

Excellent choice! Love reading about the reasonable customisations you specified here. Perfect bluewater setup.

Something interesting, and much more significant about Jeanneau Boats 12 metre and over, is they are Bureau Veritas Certified (much like Lloyds Certification ) and far more important than CE ratings (CE really is bad news when it comes to anything Standards related, sad to say) . I'm waiting to find out if another option on my top prospects list, the Dufour 470, is also BV Certified. I think asking about BV Cert of any European Boat Builder Boat Model, is probably a very good idea tbh. Best Wishes and Fair Winds. Bob. 👍

I think you totally over looked Allures/Garcia yachts. The Allures 40.9 has an incredible aluminum hull, amazing interior, center board, twin rudders, big fuel and water tanks.... Fast, Strong, Safe. It's a true sailors/ bluewater boat and they start right around the 300K. Ultra rare to find one on the second hand market. That says a lot. They are the boat brand Jimmy Cornell uses to circumnavigate. The guy that wrote the world cruising routes book everyone uses.

I think a lot of people are missing the point that more Production Boats are Crossing Oceans and going "Bluewater" Successfully Today, than specifically Bluewater designed, very expensively built Bluewater Yachts. Properly prepared, and not necessarily expensively prepared, Production Bosts can, and frequently do offer Significant advantages over the non Production Boats. For example, and given most distance Cruisers spend 75% ishnof their time at anchor, or in Marinas or on mooring buoys, Very Comfortable and usable Cockpits, and great Comfort with good galleys, heads and showers below decks. Those making .Production Boats, have been making them for a very longbtime now, and if the unsuitable pile of Crap that some like to suggest, they would have gone out of business long ago.mRight ? Yes, many now copy the features introduced by Production Boat Builders, now why would that be ? Me? my last boat, and prior, wasvlong keel, and built like an outside toilet, but frankly a bit of a pita to actually live with. Next boat, a Production Boat, likely a Jeanneau sun odyssey 440. Will it be Oerfect ? He'll no, but no Boat Built Yet has been anythingnother than a Hull Full of Compromises. I'm going withnthe compromises I can live with Comfortably and Safely Thanks very much, with the Bonus it will be reasonably priced. Friends had Jeanneau Sailboats in the late 1980's Guess what ? They're still Afloat today, and they were nice to sail then too. There's a lot of irrational Sailing Snobbery around with does nobody any good at all imho, and tbh, it's probably contributing to a mentality that is keeping everything Marine related, Chronically Overpriced for what is frequently undrspecced Crap, waiting for Suckers in Chandlers. ☹️

Fair assessment and an interesting read. Some brands are of course more guilty than others.
