@@feldspar3858 Em started out being fun too. Because they existed, he was able to get his start, and then he evolved. They both have their place in history, I think they will last just as long as each other. Why does it have to be a competition?
The fact that he didn't know who they were and didn't know they helped start rap and didn't know that there were white rappers in the '80s. Don't applaud that seriously, if you're a student and a fan of the art you know

Beastie Boys are Hip Hop LEGENDS, flat out, but somehow still one of the most underappreciated rap groups of all time.
The entire second Beastie Boys album Paul's Boutique is one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time. It didn't sell nearly as many albums as their first album Licensed To Ill, but it has stood the test of time and the sampling alone on it is just in a class of it's own.
best videos indeed - what a golden age of the music video !! Sabotage - that 70s cop show reference with the donuts and bad moustaches - think of all the other themes they could have spoofed !!
Great thing about the Boys was that they ALWAYS had a sense of humor about their music, even when all the others were so serious (almost comically so) about theirs.
Yes, they never took the content too seriously (with some exceptions) but ALWAYS took the music (beats, lyrics, composition etc) top tier. The list of references (Rod Carew, Bill Lambeer, etc) and their choice of sampling showed they were always digging into old stuff and blowing the dust off.
IMO the absolute best Beastie Boys song/video is the one they did for Three MC's And One DJ. They did it live instead of using the studio recording, and Mix Master Mike plays the whole song with just 1 record and nothing else. It's ultimate fkn gold!!

Dude I love you and your appreciation for the 80s. I graduated High School in 86 and it was all great times man..I can't even tell you how awesome it was. Thanks Gen Z for accepting Gen X 😘
Beasties are the greatest Rap group of all time......How could you have never heard their music? Their biggest hit was "You gotta Fight for your right" And their first Album is listed as one of the greatest albums of all time (License to Ill) and honestly there is not a bad song on it. NOT ONE TRACK that doesn't hit
Beastie boys first album came out in 1986 and the whole album is fire. Their beats. Cadences. Rhyming patterns. Etc were way ahead of their time. One of the dopest hip-hop groups in history. Check out. Paul revere. Brass monkey. So watcha want. Sabotage. The new style. Sure shot. Get it together.
I think Polly Wog Stew from '82 was their first album but whether they were called Beastie Boys back then I'm unsure of. Too lazy to google it. However it wasn't rap but punk.
Beastie Boys are the ultimate party/club music for some 20 years. They always were bustin it and were a go to, to get people up and groovin. As for other songs to check out. Brass Monkey, like this one was a massive club hit for years. Shake Your Rump slaps and one was of the first songs to ever have a Bass Drop a decade before it became popular and is a record holder for most songs used to create a sample. 3 MC's And One DJ, is old school perfection and the official video is from its LIVE shot for MTV Music Awards and really shows their rap skills as well as seeing the DJ cut the track in real time. As for House of Pain, they were kind of a 1 hit wonder, there second biggest was Shamrocks and Shenanigans, it was a hit but not massive. They did have another track hit the top 100, but barely. Jump Around was just so big, it over-shadowed the rest of their work.
The Beasties had tons of hits. "So What'Cha Want" and "Pass the Mic" are the early 90s staples. In the mid 90's it would be "Sure Shot" and "Root Down". In 1989 it would be "Shake Your Rump", "Hey Ladies", Shadrack" and "Looking Down the Barrel of Gun". 1986 would be "Paul Revere" (no video) and "It's the New Style". They have a lot more than that though. After 1987 they started branching off from main stream hip hop so I think a lot of rap fans missed the bulk of their later work. House of Pain has a track called "Shamrocks & Shenanigans" that was around for a bit. The sleeper was a track they did for the Judgment Night Soundtrack called "Just Another Victim". It was a joint-track with the hardcore band "Helmet" and is one of the dopest cuts House of Pain ever put out. It starts would sounding like a hard-core metal track and then turns into a hip hop banger half-way through. It's one of the craziest cuts ever.
It makes me so happy to see the younger generations discovering the Beastie Boys. I saw them four times live in the mid-90’s and that energy was off the charts! You can really go on a journey looking up their lyrics and learning so much about how Gen X grew up based solely on the references they make and the music they sample. I would highly suggest checking out Pharcyde and a Tribe Called Quest as well. They did some collab work with the BBoys. I definitely feel lucky to have gone through that time with the groups, it was an amazing time for music and creative exploration.
You gotta do ‘3MCs and 1 DJ’!! The Beastie Boys are in the Hall of Fame, they are iconic and the Dj- Mix Master Mike won so much at the DJ competitions of the day, that he was asked not to compete anymore. Great tune! Old school hip hop. Also a lot of other rappers, including Eminem, have given their respect to the Beastie Boys. Awesome reaction- thanks!
My favorite band of all time, hands down. Punk rock, hip hop, groove. I love it all! I can't believe there are people who don't know them. I feel old...
7:45 House of Pain was pretty much a one hit wonder, but the Beastie Boys discography [starting with their debut in 1986] contains several popular songs that got a lot of play on both the radio and MTV. They stopped making new music after MCA (Adam Yauch) died of cancer in 2012.
Beastie Boys is all about having fun and never taking the lyrics too serious, they just some fun loving comedic boys who could spit some rather great rhymes for the time
They were the first "legitimate" white rappers on the scene. 100% credible and they were signed to Def Jam, which alone said that they were official. Their shows brought a zany, rock&roll attitude to Hip-Hop at the time. Their aesthetic and humor was different from what rap fans were used to seeing and hearing up until that point. This video reminds you of Power Rangers because The Power Rangers was inspired by Godzilla movies. There was no Power Rangers when this video dropped. The Beastie Boys would have grown up watching Godzilla movies and it would have been their inspiration for the style of this video. It's a Japanese cinema aesthetic that started 100% with Godzilla. I think at the time, audiences appreciated The Beastie Boys because they were true to themselves as New Yorkers and weren't trying to copy the style of their Black Rap ancestors. They were definitely inspired by the rappers before them, but they put their own unique spin on it and it was authentic. They could spit and their voices were perfect for their content. Thanks for posting! You should definitely check out "Paul Revere", one of their best joints. Many more...
Yeah, this dropped in 98, so the Power Rangers were around, but I was basically saying that The Beastie Boys are my age, so this would have been a Godzilla aesthetic for them, that we grew up on. That was the aesthetic that pretty much popularized the aesthetic style of the video. However, given the popularity of The Power Rangers I can also imagine the director drawing inspiration them too.@@Leathal
They make great music along with videos that are fun to watch. They have fun with it and it comes across in their performance. Check out Sabotage, both the studio video and live on David Letterman. In case you didn't know, they also play all the instruments. Also see Three MCs & One DJ and What 'Cha Want. Thanks for posting!

Oh man, this brings back good memories. We used to breakdance to the beastie boys. Cool seeing you hear them for the first time. Rap royalty right there.
I grew up on the Beasties in the 80s. They were rapping about sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll then (after starting out as a punk band) in the 80s, and they switched to different topics in the 90s, when they were embraced by the alternative rock community as well as the hip hop community. They also started playing guitar, bass, and drums again on some of their songs in the 90s. Standout Beastie Boys songs include "Paul Revere", "Slow and Low", "Brass Monkey", "Hey Ladies", "Shake Your Rump", "So Watcha Want?", "Sure Shot", and "Sabotage". Their musical output stopped by 2010, after founding member revealed he was fighting cancer. He sadly passed in 2012, ending the Beasties' 30+ -year run. They will always be considered innovators and pioneers of hip hop, as well as opening doors for many white rap artists.
Beastie Boys originally were a Hardcore Punk band from Brooklyn NY. There is a Podcast called No Dogs In Space which does in-depth histories of bands that were the pioneers of their genre and they have a 6 part series on the Beastie Boys. Rick Rubin created Def Jam Records with Beastie Boys and Run DMC as his first signed artists.
This song is from ‘98! But BB was active from 1981 to 2012. My Dad was a HUGE fan, so BB was part of the soundtrack of my childhood 😂 Listening to them is so nostalgic.
This song was actually made in 1998. They got very good songs that are from the 80s. I should know I’m 47 used to listen to the beastie boys all the time. Great reaction keep doing your thing brother one big love.
God I LOVED this album in high school… I had the incredible opportunity to see Mike D play twice in Austin in the early aughts before the plan crash that took Adam. This guys are ICONIC.
These dudes are on the Mount Rushmore. Probably the greatest really. I can't think of another group that did or could do what they did. This so far into their catalogue. Three MC's and one DJ should blow you away if you don't know. Rest in peace Adam. Until the day I die and if you knew how heavy my taste went you would just shake your head.
Thank you for alerting me to the fact that a lyric of this song is "I'll stir fry you in my wok." Being a 90s teen I know this song well, but never really got past yelling "I like my sugar with COFFEE AND CREAM!" As for other Beastie songs - everyone will mention Fight For Your Right - one of those chronically misunderstood songs. I have fond memories of a friend constantly playing Girls though.
Not only are Beastie Boys rap royalty, they arguably put on the best ever performance on Letterman in 1994 when they played Sabotage. Good to see Gen Z getting the 90's shit back in rotation. Another band to check out is Rage Against The Machine.
From turn table, to synthesizer to drums guitars and all other instruments they played them selves and crewted everything them Selves,, it's why they hold a historic place in music History
It's almost hard to believe that this came out 26 years ago and is still a banger today. They were one of the true pioneers of hiphop that paved the way for Artists today. Even Missy Elliots beats were inspired by Beastie Boys.
Beastie Boys are rap royalty. Eminem said publicly that without them, he wouldn't exist.

They will always be considered innovators and pioneers of hip hop, as well as opening doors for many white rap artists.
Dude, "Paul's Boutique"
That album changed EVERYTHING.
I was so lucky to see these guys live back in the day! Probably the best concert I’ve seen!
Never heard of the podcast. Subscribing now, thank you
@@KlingonPrincess happy to bring understanding of why music is important. You are in for a journey. Cheers.
90's epicness. I used to DJ with this song and it always went over well
🔥🔥🔥
This brings back some memories. This was in the top 20 countdown just before MTV stopped being about music.
This is where the influence came from for RENs : WHAT YOU WANT! 😏✌️🫶🔥🔥🔥🔥🎶💯 LOVE IT!
I would definitely come back for more Beastie Boys.
This song is from ‘98! But BB was active from 1981 to 2012. My Dad was a HUGE fan, so BB was part of the soundtrack of my childhood 😂 Listening to them is so nostalgic.
Dude..Beastie Boys are actual legends💪😎👍
Glad ya found' em
Beastie Boys - So What'Cha Want
Yes I was going to say that 😮
This song was actually made in 1998.
Ill Communication has to be my favorite of their albums- Sure Shot, Root Down, Alright Hear This, and Shambala are f-ing everything!
I'm so glad you liked it it's my fav. beastie boys
This is most definitely classic 90's beastie boys...they f@#kin rock
Thank you for alerting me to the fact that a lyric of this song is "I'll stir fry you in my wok." Being a 90s teen I know this song well, but never really got past yelling "I like my sugar with COFFEE AND CREAM!" As for other Beastie songs - everyone will mention Fight For Your Right - one of those chronically misunderstood songs. I have fond memories of a friend constantly playing Girls though.
If I’m not mistaken, this music video is homage to the old Godzilla/kaiju movies 👍🏻✨
I am genuinely envious of you. I’d love to have the experience of listening to the Beastie Boys again for the first time.
3 MCs and 1 DJ. Without a doubt.
I was obsessed with their song Looking down the barrel
This is the group that built the foundation of Def Jam Records
Not only are Beastie Boys rap royalty, they arguably put on the best ever performance on Letterman in 1994 when they played Sabotage.
Good to see Gen Z getting the 90's shit back in rotation.
Another band to check out is Rage Against The Machine.
Beastie Boys are like OG Def Jam, they're even in the 1985 movie Krush Groove. Hall of Fame GOATs. RIP Yauch.
OG’s. Beastie Boys! This is sooo nostalgic.
So what'cha want. Beasties at their best. And so many more. One of the best rap groups to ever do it.
It's great watching a younger generation hear songs new to them
A generational group of artists
Their rap repertoire is great. Love it. But maaaan, I love their funk album even more, "The In Sound From Way Out" is awesome.
I love it When young people discover the beastie boys
Always ahead of their time. 🔥 🔥
Beastie boys are legit OG true rap legends
Love Beastie Boys back in the day❤
The Beastie Boys were ridiculously creative. One of the most unique hip hop groups to ever exist.
This is by far their best tune love it
From turn table, to synthesizer to drums guitars and all other instruments they played them selves and crewted everything them Selves,, it's why they hold a historic place in music History
It puts a smile on my face when i see a young blood dig the tunes from the day
This song gives me a visceral flashback to high school that makes me feel emotional.
They have one of the Best DJ's ever
It's almost hard to believe that this came out 26 years ago and is still a banger today. They were one of the true pioneers of hiphop that paved the way for Artists today. Even Missy Elliots beats were inspired by Beastie Boys.
Rock and roll Hall of Fame baby...
