In reality, they crossed so many genres, there really isn't a label for them. They started as kinda punk, morphed into hip-hop and ended with a blend no one has been able to match. They were a rare magic we were fortunate to be around for. They are definitely GOATs! ❤
Most bands would be lucky to have one MC of this quality. They had three. Most bands would be lucky to have one DJ or producer of this quality - they had Rubin, DJ Hurricane and Mixmaster Mike - not to mention Mario C. And they played luve instruments too. And could play punk, jazz, hip hop, and anything in between. There's a reason they're beloved, and its funnily enough, not any of that: they spoke about what they knew, and they never pretended to be anyone other than who they were. And they were humble in a genre that didnt encourage that even then.

Old Xer here, in the 90s MCs strove to sound like no one else and write the "illest" ryhmes. BBs were successful but that competition to top what came before and it seemed to rise to a new level often.
Even during that sad time when Hip Hop and Metal wasn't really compatible, and the fans of each genre hated - or at least pretended to hate - each other, Beastie Boys were among the few transcenders of genres, that we could all agree kicked ass!
If you watch the thermal camera shots carefully, you’ll see that the Beasties were literally playing all the instruments of the backing track. Guitar, bass, drums, and keyboard. Who else can you think of that does that in hip hop ? Not. Many.
Beastie Boys play many instruments in a lot of songs, no doubt. But in this one, the beat is sampled from Southside Movement and the organ is played by Money Mark. There’s a bunch of other samples in the mix. Just clarifying.
The Beastie Boys play the intruments you hear...guitar, bass, drums, and keyboards, so they can create their own effects even without sampling if they want to.
I remember the year this came out there was a LOT of me and my boysvat parties jumping up and down in unison to this, then the track finishes and we put it on again 🤣
This track blew my mind when it dropped. The drums are crazy! The story goes that Mike D put a big, long cardboard box tunnel at the end of his kick drum. He played the drums and Mario C mic'd it up. They were sampling their own live instruments a lot in these days. Putting their own sounds into EMU SPs and Akai MPCs. The Beasties were real pioneers when it came to creating sounds and this goes all the way back to the License to Ill days with MCA making tape loops, running stuff in reverse, etc. They were heavily involved in the process but were also lucky enough to surround themselves with great engineers like the Dust Brothers and Mario C. A lot of people just see them as rappers but they were heavily involved on the beat making end and played their own instruments too.
Believe it or not, the Beastie Boys are the ones who introduced LL Cool J to the rap world and made him who he is. They introduced him to DEF jam records, and the rest is history.
I grew up on the Beastie Boys because of my dad. My personal favorite album is Paul’s Boutique. What’s interesting about this album is that it didn’t do as well as License to Ill (which is one of the best selling hip hop records of all time). But it’s their most critically acclaimed album. The reason is because when they were recording License to Ill, they were signed on by Def Jam Records. When it came time to make their second album, Def Jam wanted to control their music too much. So they said nope ✌🏻 and signed on to a different record label after that. I always respected they didn’t sell out. No doubt about it. At this time, in the early 90s, the Beastie Boys were the premiere trendsetters of youth culture. Those of us in high school at the time remembered their antics in the 80s. The hippest among us remembered and still played their groundbreaking masterpiece Paul’s Boutique. But Check Your Head was the Beasties at their coolest. And you’re right, they were, at the time, who we wanted to be. Worldly but down to earth. Fun as fuck but serious about the right things. I always likened them to the Beatles of my generation in terms of their ability to be right at the forefront of the moment culturally.
Ohhh we can turn you on to so much stuff, young friend. Great musicians, iconic songs and videos - so much to share about music and music history. And WE LOVE to bring y’all onboard! ❤
I remember working in a club in LA when this song came out - feels like yesterday but nearly 30 years ago! Whenever this song came on.. just fire. You had to stop and move.. it just has so much swag.
This song was released the summer after I graduated from high school. It was such an amazing time to be that age. Still hasn't been knocked out of my top rotation. Shoot...I'm still crushing on Adrock 32 years later.
Listen to some of the very old rap, like Whodini, 5 Minutes of Funk, Friends, some old R&B like Heat Wave, Always and Forever, maybe some Roger Troutman/ZAPP, Computer Love, More Bounce to the Ounce, Midnight Star, Slow Jam.... So much great music from the 80's...
Dude, good for you... I like the appreciation you have for the timeless style and sound of the Beasties. I also love the comments you had about the music scene these days and you presented a somber and free thinking opinion on the way things are heading creatively. Subscribed!
90’s was the best time in music and yes I’m old and biased, also worked right next to a record store and got to grab new releases in hand every week didn’t miss a thing. Miss those days.
Check Your Head got slightly more love than Paul's Boutique when it came out. Pass The Mic was the first single/video released before this one at the time. In Philly in 1992 Q102 played top 40 pop and would play a new release in the evening called 'Q It or Screw It'; this was overwhelmingly voted to Screwed It. It would've been played on MTV's 120 Minutes on Sunday night. The video for Sabotage from Ill Communication is what really relaunched the Beastie Boys back into mainstream popularity. Dude working the register at Sam Goody didn't even know they had a new album out when i bought the cassette back then.
Your comment about gen z was interesting to me. I'm in my 30's and after going back and digging through older music, I found there's lots of non-mainstream/commercial stuff that I missed out on cause I didn't dig hard enough. I would bet money there's tons of gen z music of all genres that isn't about getting money or clappin' cheeks but you're gonna have to dig for it, and it will be all the sweeter when you find it.
You seem very wise for your age, bro. Keep it up. People like you will be the hope for your generation to break out of conformity and be creative and introspective again!
That sound is Adam Yauch (MCA) on the bass guitar, Michael Diamond (mike D) on drums and Adam Horowitz (Ad Rock) on guitar., with Mario C. on the keys. You are hearing musicians, not just samplers or cheats.
I’ve always been a Metalhead mainly. But I listen to the Beastie Boys, Tupac, and NWA. Beastie Boys did an all instrumental album called In Sounds From Way Out. It’s only about thirty minutes long. It’s awesome.
I see you've started down the Ren rabbit hole, yay! To complete his guitar/rapping/story telling, The Tale of Jenny & Screech (& Violet) full story should be next. For Ren straight up rapping, The Hunger is sooo good. He's just killing it. Also great is his rap song Power, but it's got a feel good sound/vibe. You can check out his band, The Big Push playing on the streets, too. Their performance of I Shot the Sheriff, Road to Zion and Hip Hop is fire. Then you'll have the full picture of who Ren is 😁
I was in high school when Licensed to I’ll came out. You had it exactly right, I was wearing adidas and ringer t-shirts every day. The Beastie Boys are icons that will stand the yeast of time.
You should check out the speeches LL Cool J and Chuck D of Public enemy made, to induct the Beastie Boys into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. They both know and respect the band personally and what they have to say about BB is really amazing.
This came out in my high school days where I was heavily skateboarding , partying and having an all around fun time ! I would put this in my soundtrack to my high school daze in the 90s lol ! And is it just me or does it seem like the Beasties were dosed up on shrooms or the like for this vid ? You can see them all cracking smiles like the perma-grin you get on hallucinogens . Plus the vid is trippy as well haha !

These vocals were recorded on a hello kitty toy mic.
These boys were bloody brilliant… funny… and creative as hell
This is an example why Gen X thinks all new music is garbage. Can't blame them, or argue, when they had groups like this.

Been listening to it since it first dropped

It’s why the Beastie Boys are considered some of the Godfathers of Hip Hop and legendary MCs to true Hip Hop Heads

Or.. we haven't evolved that much
It's one of their best imo. Still goes hard after all these years.
That beat is so unique and stays with you well after you leave it
Agreed 100% I still hear it, in my head sometimes, for no reason.
Then I remember why.
This song is very underrated
I find it impossible not to start grooving to this song regardless of what else I'm doing.

The Beastie Boys, besides their artistic achievements, developed a lot of technology and technique that is fundamental to hip hop today.
