My dude, I'm 48 and grew up on this stuff. Brings a tear to my eye to see you enjoying a group I've been digging since I was a kid in the 80s. Helps me feel young. I appreciate you!
For real!! 45 and it brings back so many good memories of when times were more simple. Makes me smile to see younger generations discovering the best music ever made!
One continuous camera shot, live in-camera, a Capella, no cuts, no auto tune, no fancy digital shit.: 3 MCs & 1 DJ. He activates them by scratching and they go back to lo-power mode when he leaves. Classic! PERFECT.
@@TheDylls Yeah I remember hearing that he and one other DJ, (I think Q-Bert who was also part of The Rock Steady DJ collective with Mike) were "asked" to retire from competing in the early to mid 90's because they would always win.
Yeah. Him and Q-Bert were the ultimate turntablists back then, and still are. They were asked not to compete again to give others a shot, I think they both became judges
RIP MCA. Happened a long time ago, but still gets me. These guys had a great bond, and it seems they all supported each other thru health struggles and yet also had a blast together.
The reason the Beasties were authentic was because of where they came up and when; in Manhattan and Brooklyn during the early 80's . They were originally a punk band but when hip hop started to pop in NYC, they were all in.
They where fire. Even though people laugh at them they where just three American Irish that created a more mainstream form of gangsta rap that would get more air time because they didn't try to be gangsta they just spit fire and created some out there music far beyond its time. I didn't hear gangsta at first being from the UK some one gave me a mix tape with this on it and I was hooked 80s was a great time
I was a big metal head in the 80's and still am, but I can say without any delay (see what I did there?..) is that Beastie Boys are one of the MOST influential bands in rap and metal. Without them, we don't have Eminem, Rage Against the Machine, Linkin Park, Korn, Slipknot who went on to influence many more. They blurred the lines of punk, Rap/hip hop and metal, something that NO ONE was doing at that time. They were brilliant. There's a reason they're in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.
I've listened to a wide variety of music all of my 53 years... and when "License To Ill" dropped I was ALL aboard... it accompanied 18 year old me on a drive from California to Wash DC... it's heartwarming to see someone so young appreciate the Beasties.
When older folks talk about their songs "back in the day", this is what we're talking about :D This was coming out in the beginning stages of hip hop and there's nothing like it nowadays.
Dude!! Beasties are the SHEET!!! 48 here and these guys are ALWAYS on the playlist. My hubs and I from time to time put on music and let it play through the house. And Beasties have their own playlist when we do that. It's some of the BEST times when we just jump around and sing our hearts out with them. Ofc we know ALL the words. It takes us both straight back to having headphones on, being early teens, and hearing them for the first time. RIP to the MCA. Always in our hearts.
The reason they aren't moving is there are no emcees without the DJ. No DJ no jam. Mix Master Mike is unparalleled. I watched this live on MTV as they did it.
B Boy's are foundational, they helped build Def Jam, Mike was so insanely talented! THIS is hip hop, no fancy cars, jewelry, dancers, just 3 MC's and 1 DJ. Just feel GOOD!
Only their first two albums, *License To Ill* and *Paul’s Boutique* came out in the 80’s. Their commercial and critical peak was from the early to late 90’s. For their first few albums, they rocked with DJ Hurricane, in ‘98 they began working with Mixmaster Mike on the album *Hello Nasty* onwards.
They were there at the start of rap in Brooklyn and lower Manhattan. They starred with Run Dmc in the 1985 movie KRUSH GROOVE, they were the first album released on DEF JAM RECORDS that they helped Rick Rubin start. They discovered LL Cool J, and had the first Platinum selling rap album, ever. They are the Princes of rap, right under Run DMC.
This is just a taste of all that was The Beastie Boys. Notice how Mix Master Mike only used ONE album for all the scratches? ONE. That is the origin of hiphop. Getting creative with what you had. The entire License to Ill album is worth listening to. They are experts at story-telling, much like Slick Rick, but in their own flavor. While you could spend years digging into the Boys, may I suggest trying Prince? Not rap. But a master at his craft (RIP). When I first heard The Beastie Boys, I was a cheerleader in middle school/jr. high. We had to ride the bus with the football team to away games. One guy had License to Ill, and I had my Walkman, so I asked if I could borrow it for the ride home? He agreed. I listened, and I was hooked. Bought the tape, wore out the tape, bought the CD. Keep in mind, this was the mid-80s. This song came out on a later album in the '90s. Got to see them live in '92 (Check Your Head tour), and they were amazing. You must hear "Paul Revere." At that concert, they started, "Now, here's a little story...." and tossed the mic into the audience. It was passed around as EVERYONE knew the words. They loved it, the fans loved it. A total blast of a concert! (RIP MCA, too).
Mix Master Mike was such a good DJ that he wasn't allowed at Scratch and DJ contests anymore because he would win each time. 😮 RIP MCA...that voice brings tears. I was 16 and we passed around music on cassette tapes. A friend's older brother had the best music and we would all make copies of his latest vinyl purchases using blank cassette tapes. First Beastie Boys album I had a copy of was Paul's Boutique.
At the beginning, when the 3 MC's are just standing there waiting, that's their way of saying that without the DJ there's no show. At the time, their DJ was Mixmaster Mike. He's worth checking out all on his own, long and storied career. The Beastie Boys worked with some amazing talent.
As someone who has been living hip hop since 1974, it is always heart warming when someone from the younger generation discovers an element from "the family tree". 🥰 REAL hip hop... live, straight to tape..."with no delay" 😃

😂 Damn man! I saw them perform this track live with A Tribe Called Quest at the Cleveland Convocation Center. It was insane. The talent at that show... Q-Tip and his crew were on fire too but the B Boys burned it down and Mix Master Mike is absolutely for real. The whole stage was a big turn table so they all faced 100% of the audience 100% of the time. It was sick. I live that you're discovering them. Keep going brother.
TBH, I am jealous that you are just experiencing the Beasties my dude. I am 46, from the NYC area and watched these guys evolve over time. Yep, I love my Jewish boys from New York. Seriously the best rappers on the East Coast, hands down. Rest in peace to Yauch. Whatcha Want is awesome. This is brilliant because it's just the DJ and them.
They changed the game. Paul Revere is their best in my opinion. Another unique group that smashed stereotypes was the all black rock group from the 80’s In Living Color. Check out their song Cult of Personality 🔥
Yeah check out Living Color (no "In"), especially Cult of Personality. Another black brother that rocks hard is the lead singer of King's X! Check out anything from their first 3 albums.
In the 80's and 90's, we lined up at the record store on the day a new album would drop. So, "hearing this for the first time"... was the event. You wait in line, buy the new CD (usually split 3 ways with your crew", then you rush home and jam and party.
o you asked, I never heard THIS before, but when I first heard of the Beasties Boys it was "You Gotta Fight For Your Right to Party" video when I was in high school. It was an anthem in my small California town. It brought them to the main stream. There is a part two that's hilarious.
I cant forget Beasties, I got my first car, put a good stereo with subwoofer, got the Hello Nasty tape for Christmas, cruised around bumping it The Move and Intergalactic over and over.
Well, you say three guys that made a super group. That makes it sound like they were famous before they came together, which they were not. But they were unique, prolific and will never be duplicated. RIP MCA

Mix Master Mike is a f*ckin LEGEND! Shit, LL COOL J even said, the Bestie Boys discovered him and without them, he wouldn't be here today. They're some of the originals from the start of rap.
As a massive Beasties fan - Gen Xer it makes my heart sing seeing you find the REAL DEAL and old school hip hop. I love Gen Z...good taste yo. ALSO MCA f'life!
I was 12 when Licensed To Ill came out in 1985 and my best friend and I were instantly hooked! I wore that cassette tape out that year and it was playing in my Walkman every time I was in the car so that I didn’t have to listen to what my parents played on the radio. I had a poster of the Boys in my room and I even took it to college with me and hung it up in my dorm room 6 years later because they were still kickin it root down 💯‼️
Yes!!! I grew up in the 80s, I got the see the birth and death of hiphop in my life. Beastie boys are God's in the game. The came out in the 80s, they weren't a super group per say, they were 3 friends who grew up in Brooklyn who loved hiphop, punk, jazz and their albums reflect that. You gotta check out beastie boys and q-tip's song get it together.... shit is ill! And their DJ isn't white either he is an S.A.! 3 jews and a Latino! I love it!
If you really want to see a legendary live performance you should check out at least the first 15 minutes of their live in Glasgow 1999 for MTV. Mix Master Mike opens the show with a full turntable rig and once the guys hit the stage they just go hard on a medley of old school stuff. At one point a drummer comes running out, MCA grabs a bass, Ad Rock grabs a guitar, and Mike D jumps on the mic where they proceed to rip through a hardcore song of theirs. They taught some of your favorite rappers, favorite rappers, favorite rappers the importance of a fantastic stage show. All their late show live stuff is great, too. Check out them playing “Watcha Want” with The Roots as their band. Pay attention to what Questlove says about them. Also, if you don’t know who Questlove is theres a problem.
This is one of my favorites from them. I saw them live several times in the 90s. For me, top 5 greatest group of all time. Their influence and eclectic style is on point. They played their own instruments and they were funky AF. Originals.

"I didn't even know they HAD censors in video back then"
I aged into a shriveled husk when that hit my ears.
😂😂
BRO this was 2004 lol 80s??? Cmon now!
At 51 yo I still cruise with the window down burning a doob jammin' Beasty Boys. Great reaction, been a fan since '86.
As a massive Beasties fan - Gen Xer it makes my heart sing seeing you find the REAL DEAL and old school hip hop. I love Gen Z...good taste yo. ALSO MCA f'life!
They were the funnest show to see live. The energy, the vibe.. it was always incredible.
1999 MTV in Glascow is a great example of them killing it live
It's all done on one turntable
I was 12 when Licensed To Ill came out in 1985 and my best friend and I were instantly hooked! I wore that cassette tape out that year and it was playing in my Walkman every time I was in the car so that I didn’t have to listen to what my parents played on the radio. I had a poster of the Boys in my room and I even took it to college with me and hung it up in my dorm room 6 years later because they were still kickin it root down 💯‼️
Right??? They are super talented and totally unexpected ! Who would have guessed?!
You know they play all their own instruments, right? There's an old Letterman clip of then doing Sabotage live. I couldn't believe it when I saw it.
Saw them live for the Hello Nasty tour. They are all terrific musicians as well as MC's
Originals.
Best time to be young 80s-00s😊😊😊😊
Now you gotta see "Paul Revere" and then "No Sleep Till Brooklyn"
