Continuing to love this truck. Since this video was made the drivetrain has been fully rebuilt to stop oil leaking everywhere and get rid of vibrations. All the old rusty floppy springs and shocks were replaced so it no longer sways so much or bottoms out suspension. Exhaust leaks are fixed and fresh coil make it peppier yet quieter. And the brakes work properly because they aren't full of oil. We ran it in 2018 and 2019 Colorado Gambler 500 as Team Killer Rabbit and done about 8000km offroad. Flopped a second time too.
The locking diff's on these vehicles is an absolute engineering masterpiece. There is a video out there showing it. Worth a look if you like your engineering. The whole vehicle is full of great engineering. The chassis is basically a long tube down the center with the prop shaft inside it and diff's at each end. Full independent suspension, portal axles, etc etc. The later vehicles had a VW water cooled engine.
You are right but it's a little ironic when you mention VW. Why? Well the mastermind behind Pinzgauer was mr. Ledvinka jr. he came to Austria from Cezhoslovakia after soviets invaded a country and his father was the main constructor in Tatra before WW2 and his Tatra T 97 was actualy a car copied by Ferdinand Porsche to became a VW beatle. Pinzgauer was made in Styer Puch company later Stayer Benz Puch (Today Magna Stayer) (also a birth place of Mercedes G or Puch G) in city Graz Austria very near Arnold Swarchenegger home vilage the name Stayer come from the region (devided betwen Austria and Slovenia) and the name Puch come from the founder of this company and he was from Slovenia the some country as Melania Trump and all three are from Stayer region
Great comment. I will research Mr Ledvinka. I knew there was some link to Tatra because of the similarity in the tube chassis design and the locking diffs. For anyone who is interested in 4WD and locking diffs, go look at a video called Pinzgauer Driveline Operation. This is an engineering masterpiece. I can't speak highly enough of the design. It has never been bettered. Hats off to Mr Ledvinka Jr. Like many in history, never got the recognition he deserved. Thank you for sharing.
You are welkom Czech were quite unlucky back in time first they got invasion from Hitler and then they got soviet dictator Stalin and almost all high tech know how for comercial use was doomed. Btw: If you look for Pinz you can also look on the region from the former Yugoslavia they have quite a lot of them because it was used by Yugo military with another Stayer Puch product namely Puch G.
This truck was designed by Erich Ledwinka, son of Hans Ledwinka, who invited the Tatra concept with central tube and independent portal axles. So the Pinz is very similar to a Tatra truck.
And the bigger brother of the Haflinger, which up until recently I had. A great little offoad vehicle, but oh so slow on the highway (76kl/h) on the rev limiter.
The Pinzgauer can also be seen as the spiritual successor of the Tatra 805. They both have the same roots and were developed and produced for the same tasks and essentially both are the brainchild of Hans Ledwinka (the Pinzgauer also designed by his son Erich Ledwinka). The off-road capabilities of the unique chassis design are highly praised and while the Steyr-Puch Pinzgauer is no longer produced, they will remain in service for decades to come. Tatra still produces heavy off-road trucks that make use of a central load-carrying tube and axles with independently suspended swinging half-axles for civilian and military applications.
Brings back memories of my days in the Swiss army. I was driving the same style Pinzgauer, but not with the antenna equpment. Compared to other old style Swiss army vehicles I used to drive the Pinzgauer was extremely light to steer. We had big 4 by 4 trucks without power steering. When an officer ordered us to practice parking for two hours straight with those monsters you thought that your arms were about to fall off. Missed good heavy duty offroad tires on this one.
Thank you for making this video. It actually addressed some of the info I couldn't find in my research trying to find/buy one. I've been in love with these things for the last 7 years since I got to drive the 712k version in a Safeway.
We extensively used these when I served in one of European armies. The thing just keeps going. Very little maintenance. As durable as Puch G (or MB G-Wagen just stripped down military version). Those two are the most rugged vehicles I experienced.
I used to drive a 67' VW microbus in the Sierra Nevada's. It also had 13" of ground clearance with rear portal gear reduction hubs. It would go anywhere and I hauled a lot of firewood in it!
4wd some WOW - sooo much missing knowledge! And at the same time do loud. The usage of this vehicle is correctly mentioned in the vid. The it's NO part similar to VW or Volvo and of course NOT made from these companies! It has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with LTs. This is a “Zentralrohrrahmen“ chassis! Similar to Tatra - completely different to all letter frame style trucks. Haven't you seen the IFS in front and rear working? How can this compare top solid axles in Volvo or LTs?
Wow, what a 'rig',...I've been wishing I could get one of these for years,..but to see it here on TFL only makes me wish that much more! Roman get's to have all the fun,..good thing too, because he's the one with the camera and this way, we all get to see how it goes.
I owned a 710M for nearly six years. Expensive to repair but what a vehicle! Like owning a VW bus on steroids! Air cooled motor, lockers front and rear, shift on the fly and high and low range. Ten man troop carriers these things and they work! I drove mine all over the country when I owned it. Had a license HUMMTHS for years. I slept in the back which I converted to a bedroom. It was the best thing for serious off roading and went and did things my Land Cruiser simply could not do. I had a military trailer that really could off road large hauls of firewood through serious muck. Sold it when I sold my property I had it for. The suspension is the best thing about them. Absorbs easily the toughest bumps and you are in comfort and feel quite in control! People had trouble keeping up with me so they always made me go last. Bored being behind people getting stuck that you can breeze right through but otherwise great rigs. Mine was a 76 Gas engine. Loved it! Gotta watch for leaks that ruin the brakes at the wheel cylinders but otherwise pretty much maintenance free.
I love my Pinzgauer. They show up in movies once in a while, Thor and Jurassic World they get some screen time. They have some limitations due to lack of articulation but are still impressive off road.
This video shows what an insular country the US is. Around the world this vehicle is famous for its off road ability and has been known for that for 40+ years.
With today's extreme weather events I feel there's going to be a resurgence of such simple, practical, no-nonsense, go-anywhere vehicles. Inexpensive box-shaped body, low power, high endurance engine, square vertical windows not likely to be damaged by hail, very capable 4WD drivetrain and plenty of space inside to carry people and goods. Seriously, this is how a rational vehicle should look like. No hot rod but will get you home even if there's no road left.
6:58 - Actually, they did extensive crash testing with the Pinz, with documentary footage showing 30MPH frontal impacts that deformed the bumper, but left the rest of the front end unscathed. The frame is so rigid, it doesn't collapse like a vintage VW bus would. Certainly wouldn't be comfortable for the occupants, but they'd still have their lower limbs intact. Having said that, you get going fast enough, you can destroy anything in a crash...but these only go about 60MPH at the top end.
Parts are easy. I replaced the entire front floor that had rusted out with new. These were military and companies in America have bought huge surplus parts. swissarmyvehicles in Arkansas has pretty much everything, and expeditionimports in Cali have a lot too. Some parts are expensive (Carbs!). But the ones you break like bumpers are super cheap.
A buddy of mine in Flagstaff had a 6x6. Thing was awesome off-road. He drown in Lake Powell back in '12. Not sure what became of the Pinz. I *think* there was a company in Prescott that was importing them.
Thank you, very informative interview. It seems like a great alternative to side-by-side or UTV. If just an off-road novelty - not a highway vehicle, how will they fare now with H1 humvees flooding the market as they are phased out of military service
Volvo C202 and C303 got almost the same design and was built in the 60's and 70's, the C202 had the 4 cyl 64 hp B18A engine from the PV544 and Amazon whilst the C303 had the 6 cyl 130 hp from the 164. Both 4x4 and 6x6 were built + a 8x8 prototype
Went to a gun show when I was about 15 and there was 2 of these there for sale. One 4x4 and one 6x6. First time ever seeing one and knew I wanted one! Both going for 12k and 12.5k. I know I'll never see that see that good of a deal again.
All this is true, but I'm not that concerned with speed. I like the extra traction and stability and the extra capacity and towing. I'll take the any of the cons of the 6x6 for its pros
I'm currently building a fireplace big enough to hold a Pinzgauer sized stocking and hoping I get it finished in time for Santa's visit on Christmas Eve.
2:23 romans face after after the comment of the man preferring his 4runner over a jeep. It was at that moment that roman realized, jeeps are for boys who want to look the part of being offroaders, and have money to waste, spending 50% of what a jeep cost just to bring it up to par of being something that can be considered realiable and capable. Where as 4runners are for men who want to actually make to anywhere in the world and back. Without failure, modification or alterations. Straight off the production line.
LOL the army uses theses things in my home country Venezuela. They even have some with rocket launchers. Now on serious note they also sell them for pennies without the guns because they are to expensive to maintain.
Come smell my Pinzgauer. I have the troop carrier version so it seats on both sides in the back and a canvas top. If you want to turn heads get One and drive it through the city. Also there is nothing more easy to parallel park then a Pinz because of how Ridiculous is it’s turning radius.
Come on guys, you forgot to mention Mr Ledwinka.who designed the Pinz....you know his dad designed all those cool Tatra cars and this chassis tube system.
Its awesome in snow with right tires. But you don't want to use where they use mag chloride or salt on the roads because rust is the enemy. Also very short wheel base makes it easy to go sideways when sliding. Being aircooled means it only has uphill heat. Downhill you freeze. My aux heater is broken.

VW diesel inline 6.
Thats our military offroader from austria! They are epic. And really fun to drive.

Lukas Vass :
Tantra is also Porsches Mother
Lukas Vass I see the tarta in it
And the bigger brother of the Haflinger, which up until recently I had. A great little offoad vehicle, but oh so slow on the highway (76kl/h) on the rev limiter.
Graz is the Detroit of Austria. Magna-Steyr builds Daimler-Chrysler products there and BMW. Puch has a big history of air-cooled products :-))))

This thing is amazing and I WANT ONE. More 4x4 footage next time please, I'd love to see it on the same track as lesser vehicles!
Same I need a pinzgauer
I have one for sale
Thank you for making this video. It actually addressed some of the info I couldn't find in my research trying to find/buy one. I've been in love with these things for the last 7 years since I got to drive the 712k version in a Safeway.
I want one so bad! Either a 4x4 or the 6x6 fully enclosed so I would have a dry place to sleep when camping. Just awesome vehicles!👍👍
We extensively used these when I served in one of European armies. The thing just keeps going. Very little maintenance. As durable as Puch G (or MB G-Wagen just stripped down military version). Those two are the most rugged vehicles I experienced.
This is great, way to show off an cool rig. This new off-road content is awesome, and I look forward to what you guys have next.
Pretty Sweet ..... loved the “she didn’t want to turn” .... you can put a price on vehicles, can’t put a price on the happiness they bring
I used to drive a 67' VW microbus in the Sierra Nevada's. It also had 13" of ground clearance with rear portal gear reduction hubs. It would go anywhere and I hauled a lot of firewood in it!
I love seeing videos like this. Keep up the great work @FLTRUCK. Also thanks for keeping other TH-camr's honest like Doug.
Pinzgauer is an Austrian Manufacter not a Swiss :)
Jan Heinrich well, it’s made in Austria, used by the Swiss, it’s just a VW LT35 with a Volvo c303 drive train
2:38 Well, the tail lights are embossed "Swiss Made".
Jan Heinrich There isnt a company called Pinzgauer. Its a type of car called Pinzgauer and its made by SteyerDaimlerPuch in Graz Austria.
The information is incorrect.
It's drive train was it's own design and the only connection to VW was the later water cooled models use a VW engine.
4wd some WOW - sooo much missing knowledge! And at the same time do loud.

Dang, not sure how I missed this one! I've driven a few including the 6x6 (and Unimogs) and they are a lot of fun.

One of the testdrivers was quoted: "the only thing to stop you in a Pinzgauer is the fear of the driver".
Awesome video, it's great to see you featuring more exotic trucks.
This video shows what an insular country the US is. Around the world this vehicle is famous for its off road ability and has been known for that for 40+ years.

Great little Truck! The New Zealand Army have been using 8 variants since 2006. Two fit in a C130 Hercules.
i’m pretty Impressed at it’s overall Performance off road

Still has the rifle clamp.
Drove the thing in the 6×6 version for quite a few months during my military days.
I've ridden in a Pinzgauer that towed a 105mm light artillery gun.. and they are awesome.
Adventure Tours in Lincoln, NH uses these. Awesome tour. Go for the off roading or take one to go zip lining. Also they are the 6x6 versions.
OMG! I love these vehicles! Please do more military-to-civilian reviews. At his price... Why aren't y'all considering the Pinz for an overlander???
Because the top speed is 60 MPH downhill with the wind
Downhill with wind at back you could actually go 70 and deaf.
And finding parts would be a challenge
Parts are easy. I replaced the entire front floor that had rusted out with new. that is REALLY cool!! great things come out of graz, and have for a long time.
I've lusted after these trucks for a long time, thanks for the vid!
It's not just driving like a Rally car, there were 6 wheel versions doing the Rally Paris-Dakar.
Great Video I love when yall take quirky 4x4s out for a spin
love this channel so much. will never forget the day I met them in my tahoe z71 at the goldmine hill
Austrian offroad awesomeness!
A buddy of mine in Flagstaff had a 6x6. Thing was awesome off-road. He drown in Lake Powell back in '12. Not sure what became of the Pinz. I *think* there was a company in Prescott that was importing them.
God I love this channel. Roman you are the only one that could have pulled that off. Like the unique content keep it up guys thanks
Pinzgauer was used a lot in ex - Yugoslavian army and is stil in use in Serbian army. Great vehicle.
He mentioned the halflinger...amazing
;-) get rid of the front l.... Haflinger (even though it's kind of a halfling compared to the Pinzgauer)
Love these kind of videos.
That's a really cool practical off road vehicle. I'd love to own one.
I owned one for years. Great vehicle! Climbs over 45 degree hills and can ford 5 feet of water.
Either you didn't own one or you didn't drive it in 5 feet of water. They don't go that deep.
Finally now you need to show the Pinzgaur 6x6
the relentless music makes an otherwise boring video really interesting and enjoyable
Thank you, very informative interview. It seems like a great alternative to side-by-side or UTV. If just an off-road novelty - not a highway vehicle, how will they fare now with H1 humvees flooding the market as they are phased out of military service
Would love to see a few more vids like this
That thing is awesome! As was his comment about take his 4Runner over a Jeep! Lol
The chassis, drivetrain and suspension on this is completely different. Swing axles work very well in off-road rally trucks
I would buy one. That thing is crazy cool.
My service Pinz, spent hours in this car as radio operator...
Thanks for the awesome video. Love it.
Went to a gun show when I was about 15 and there was 2 of these there for sale. One 4x4 and one 6x6. First time ever seeing one and knew I wanted one! Both going for 12k and 12.5k. I know I'll never see that see that good of a deal again.
You can still find 4x4 710m for that price. But beware, at that price it may cost much more due to rust and neglect.
@@ErikDJ123 for sure. These ones were slick and clean.
I've been wanting a 6x6 of this for a few years now. Such cool vehicles
I wanted 6x6 too, and maybe still do. Less tippy they say. But less fast, and much larger turning radius (like 6-8ft more). And more tires to buy.
All this is true, but I'm not that concerned with speed. I like the extra traction and stability and the extra capacity and towing. I'll take the any of the cons of the 6x6 for its pros
I go with more aggressive tread. Those mild M+S truck tires are better suited for on road and mild off road.
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Here’s Johnny!” Kidding aside, awesome truck dude!
What a fun video, thanks for sharing.
I'm currently building a fireplace big enough to hold a Pinzgauer sized stocking and hoping I get it finished in time for Santa's visit on Christmas Eve.

I've been wanting one of those since the 80's
LOL the army uses theses things in my home country Venezuela. They even have some with rocket launchers. Now on serious note they also sell them for pennies without the guns because they are to expensive to maintain.
Us in ex Yugoslavija too also in Serbia, Croatia, Slovenija, Bosnia, Macedonia, Montenegro too.
PINZGAUER! lol so dang cool you guys are showing one off
Wonder if Icon or King can make some coilovers for it to really drive the Pinz fast off road.
Can pull anything medium or little trailer other have on
Come smell my Pinzgauer. I have the troop carrier version so it seats on both sides in the back and a canvas top. If you want to turn heads get One and drive it through the city. Also there is nothing more easy to parallel park then a Pinz because of how Ridiculous is it’s turning radius.
You guys testing up at Caribou?
Looked like a fun review to do.
The pinzgauer shpuld get 120 Pointe on the TFL offroad index. (20points extra for postal axes) ;)
You should try the Swedish "equivalent", the Volvo C303 (or tgb11 as it is called in the military).
you should showcase some of the trails around boulder
Great video. I’ve seen 1 of these and the owner wasn’t at the show to talk to about it.
Does the TFL team have one of these on its shopping list?
These things are fantastic.
That's the perfect off-road rig.
Wow what a cool truck I want one.
Somebody has one on Nantucket and they use it for beach yoga.
Man, I've always wanted a pinzgaur to place right beside my Disco 03 😳
I know what this thing is... the bane of the existence of my Military in Wargame Air Land Battle.
You should make a comparison between this and the Volvo C303. Both seem very similar.
they arent
Come on guys, you forgot to mention Mr Ledwinka.who designed the Pinz....you know his dad designed all those cool Tatra cars and this chassis tube system.
Nice. It has to be tough if you have a bunch of soldiers driving it, they will tear up any piece of equipment that isn't made to last.
A guy is selling one here in Denver area for 12,000. Is that good?
I got to have one of those if it handles that good in snow.
The 6x6 version must be absolutely unstoppable off-road lol.
Pinzgauer ist ein österreichisches Militärfahrzeug .Punkt. Die damaligen hatten einen Steyr Motor.Gebaut in Österreich 🇦🇹 Entwickelt in Österreich.Da könnt ihr euch nich so künstlich aufpudeln.
the 6x6 is badass
Looks like it would make a nice little daily driver lol
Mine does. Noisy as hell .
I want this and Hellgeth Bv206.
Good find
We used to see Delta Force and SAS drive these in Afghanistan. I think they used them because they blended in with the jingle trucks.
That guy should se the scandinavian equivalent the Volvo Valp = (puppy)
Great vehicle, but is easier to tipp over than the pinzgauer.
needs some BFG tires all terrains, or mudders
that monty python holy grail shirt is awesome.
like that conehead-klingonian driver 0:47 - Welcome to earth.
And it has built in racks for 2 FAL/L1A1 rifles.
How much 💸 are Parts❓
There is a guy in Waukesha Wisconsin that has a fleet of these if you want one.
very nice video!
2:06 Tommy must've been drenched throughout the production!
