I'm doing the same thing to my 1991 F-250. Thank you for your definitive, clear-spoken instruction and direction. This video helped me immensely. Thank you, thank you, thank you. hope you're having a great, blessed day.
Yeah man!!! That was awesome! Thanks a lot for that. For an automotive student, your video takes away the fear of changing a timing belt. Well done! I picked up a 1989 F250 three months ago and needs some TLC but it is great.
I really appreciate you and your video, it is the most detailed video from start to finish that i could find on the timing chain removal and replacement....the video really helped me out alot on my f150 project ...thank you and take care....
Thanks for the video they are very helpful! I picked up a green 95 f350 with 40k but will be replacing the water pump and deleting the airpump since it's noisy.
Not sure if your still around. Thanks for posting. Very confused about the timing aspect. Found other videos but they didn't show as much as u did. God bless
Great vid!! You made a comment in the video that the truck you were working on was a standard, therefore it needed to be in neutral. Would this be the same case for an automatic transmission, needing to be placed in neutral? just worried about rolling the engine over.
I had to take a cutting wheel and cut where the bolts were running through the water pump. I then was able to pry apart the aluminum around the bolts and remove them.
That balancer has seen better days. Surprised you reused it. I found out the the hard and expensive way to replace when looking tired. Like that rubber looks like and cracked.
Funny as Heck. Each Video I watch has the Flat Plate that goes behind the Water Pump in Different. According to last Video yours was in Backwards? I just wish to know whats the correct Position for it?
If you look at the old plate and the new plate they are installed the same way, embossed center out. The new Motorcraft pump came with the plate installed so unless my truck was assembled wrong at the factory and the replacement pump was wrong, it's installed correctly.
Wish I would have seen this before I replaced my water pump last year. One bolt came out, one got cut off, the rest broke. Took 7 days to replace that water pump. Was not a fun experience
I'm getting ready to put a new timing cover and water pump on a remanned 460. I bought a gasket set with it and was wondering if i should use the paper gasket for the timing cover by itself, or put sealant on the gasket surfaces AND use the paper gasket for the cover. What do you think?
I use Permatex brush on gasket sealer on all my paper gaskets. Since the coolant goes thru the cover into the block I would also use a very thin film of black RTV around those ports for added protection.
@@QuickSpeedShop Ok. That's what I planned on doing so thank you. And as for aligning the cover, I've heard some people use that spacer that rides on the crank seal to align it. Good idea?
I have an '89 7.5l Ford, and am wondering how is the harmonic damper a press fit on the crankshaft, when it's butting up against the counter weight? Is the crankshaft tapered? What am I missing here?
How do you prevent the engine from spinning once you have it in tdc ? I have a auto do you put the trans in gear? Thank you very much have to do this job soon
@@QuickSpeedShop sorry I meant when removing the harmonic balancer and the bolts for the cam sprocket and such. Would removing these cause the engine to be moved from the TDC and timing alignment?
Just set it at TDC then remove balancer, timing cover, and timing gears. You'll have to rotate the cam and or crank very little by hand to get the timing dots to line up, like a degree or two one way or the other.
I got a 87 f250 dually just wondering how hard it is to take the whole front clip off like y'all have that one sure give me a lot of room putting the motor back in or did you do a video while pulling the front hole clip off Amanda carbureted 460
I think I did a disassembly video early on. The truck was wrecked when I got it. Basically, you have to remove the hood, fenders, and core support. I think I did a reassembly video when I put the new front end on. Search the Project Green Machine playlist on my channel.
I little bit wont hurt. Make sure you put a thin film around the ports between the block and the timing cover where the water goes. I have a small leak there on my truck after about 20K miles.
For anyone watching this and you're planning on doing your timing the timing on the Ford 460 7.5 is 10 degrees before top dead center make note of that before starting this project
I don't know what you're referring to. I installed the timing set correctly as well as the waterpump plate. Truck has been driven 45,000 miles since this video was made so apparently it was done correctly.
@@QuickSpeedShop Firstly I don't know whats right. I do know the other (and first) video I watched had the Plate in backwards from Yours so...being a rank beginner I had to ask. Thank you for you're reply.

96 f150 4x4 short box 5.8 here sprung a leak.this is the best video I've found

Beautiful job I need to do this on my 1990 f250 I been slacking for 6 years
I like this green machine, as always, your videos are both entertaining and helping

I did an air pump video so be sure to watch that. Thanks for watching!
@@QuickSpeedShop I did watch that and it was very helpful thanks for part numbers for the pulley and bracket
nice video, I'm looking to replace the water pump on my 78' Lincoln Continental Mark V. Pretty similar to the job you did on your newer 460.
Not sure if your still around. Thanks for posting. Very confused about the timing aspect. Found other videos but they didn't show as much as u did. God bless
Still driving the truck 40k after this video was made.
Great video can't wait for the next one
Great vid!! You made a comment in the video that the truck you were working on was a standard, therefore it needed to be in neutral. Would this be the same case for an automatic transmission, needing to be placed in neutral? just worried about rolling the engine over.
The automatic isn't directly connected to the engine like a standard. It needs to be running and spinning the torque converter.
Put almost 40K on that balancer since this video was filmed.
@@QuickSpeedShop You're a luckier man than I my friend. Nice!
Good info, would like to know how you got the broken bolt out😊
Heated it up and vice grips I think. It was 4 years ago, I don't remember.
Did you do a video on the broken bolt removal or can you tell me how you removed the bolt? I have the same issue right now . Thanks!!
No I didn't. I used some vice grips to get it out if I remember.
Thanks
The TORCH MAN rules AGAIN!! LOL
Gracias güero 😎
How you get the broken bolt out , didn’t see that being covered in your video? Thanks
Pretty sure I heated it up and backed it out with vicegrips. I don't really remember as it was over 2 years ago.

Do you have to take starter off and somehow hold flywheel so it doesnt turn when taking harmonic balancer bolt out?
Yes, or in this case my truck is standard shift so I left it in gear.
@@QuickSpeedShop Is there a strap or spanner wrench i can buy to hold crank from turning?
Use an 1/2 drive impact gun and the bolt will come right out.
What bolt did u use to replace the broken bolt?
A new bolt

The bolts should align. Just start them all a few turns and when they are all in it should be good.
good job !, but you didn't show how you got the broken bolt out
That's coming up in a future episode. I actually haven't got it out yet.
I have an '89 7.5l Ford, and am wondering how is the harmonic damper a press fit on the crankshaft, when it's butting up against the counter weight? Is the crankshaft tapered? What am I missing here?
It's not a press fit per se, it's just a really tight fit that requires it to be pulled off.
Hell Yeah!
balancer 1st then bolts in alloy cover
U didnt address the broken off bolt in timing cover. Thats the issue I have. Did u drill it out or replace the whole timing cover?
I don't remember, that was almost 2 years ago. I didn't replace the cover. I must have got it out with vice grips or a punch.
Is there a gasket between the water pump and its backing plate? Thanks
Yes
@Quick Speed Shop okay cool thanks. That means you'll have 2 gaskets total correct? I'm doing one for the first time and wanna get it right.
Yes, you should get them both with a water pump or in the timing gasket set if you're taking the cover off.
How do you prevent the engine from spinning once you have it in tdc ? I have a auto do you put the trans in gear? Thank you very much have to do this job soon
The engine can't turn on its own. The cam and crank won't move without something causing them to move.

That's what she said hahaha
