- From July 1st, you will no longer be able to apply for a student visa if you hold a visitor or 485 visa.
The surprise 189 invitation round happens.
The debate over the student visa quotas for education providers heats up.
This is an interview with Helena, a carpenter student who will be devastated when the age cap begins on July 1st.
Our Age Cap petition has gathered over 21,000 signatures!

I came here in 2017 for my masters in IT and then continued with my PhD hoping for a PR pathway at some point. So far, every single door has been slammed shut in my face when I got there…
When I completed my masters, the points cutoff jumped to around 90 from about 75 when I started. I decided to accept a PhD scholarship from my uni as Victoria still had a PhD PR pathway in 2019. That was removed a year after I started. I completed my research and decided to get my skills assessment from ACS using my overseas experience, only to realise that they added the requirement for payslips and bank statements in 2019 (which for me was from 2013, and of course I don’t have them after 11 years). Why can’t we be assessed using the rules that were in place when we first arrived in the country?
All this just feels like a lottery - even if you have what they need, you have to jump through so many hoops that by the time you reach your target, the rules will change.
My take? Forget Australia, and if you can, go to some other country that actually welcomes you, and not keeps you running around in circles.
ICT is one of the worst fields to pursue in Australia if you are aiming for PR.
Sorry to hear you have had a rough time.
Sorry for that bro. Totally understand, there are 10000’s of hard working individuals who just want to do normal job and raise a family, ily in Australia. My brother had three kids after coming to Australia and he was still under 485 visa, he applied for student visa but got rejected. He just wants to leave Australia now, no hope.. we pay so much tax and the university fees are 10 times more to international students. If we were in US his kid would have gotten US citizenship .. and also they reduce the tax with number of kids.
Changing the regulations is fine - the issue is that they’re playing with people’s lives here. In trying to “improve” the immigration system, they appear to have lost their integrity and have left out all ethics. Remember, there was a time when the government was welcoming international students, and now they’re being blamed for pretty much everything. Hypocrisy, thy name is the government(?)
No doubt many of the Asian countries will consider the recent changes and the proposed new points test as a great financial opportunity.
No extra points for Australian or regional study and equal points ranking in other respects Australia or abroad.
Strict requirements in terms of meeting TSMIT for hours contract salary make proof of work experience more difficult in Australia than abroad. Not really a level playing field.
Far lower fees and living costs for those who study abroad .
Difficult to see how the removal of the points that students were led to believe would be awarded at the start of the course were not justified.
Higher Education is the fourth largest export with new points test if implemented resulting in longstanding damage and possible recession.
Most of industry has been out sourced. Why education!
Yes, I agree if I have known that there would be no grad visa for someone like me who is over 35 yrs old then I would never come to Australia. I love Australia because of many aspects specially education but after hearing this bad news for 485, everything went down since I came here leaving my family in my home country, I spent lots of money and made sacrifices for the better goal but then my positive outlook turns to nothing... It is really sad, I am so devastated. Anyway, thank you so much Karl Conrad for your empathy to international students like me.

Yes you should have been told in the begining so you could have made that decision not to come. But no the government wanted your money as a priority. It is worse than unfair

Thanks Karl for keeping us all up to date whilst this anxiety inducing turmoil is ongoing.
No worries, let see what happens
I wish you can give two videos a week Carl (my favorite channel to tuned in)
From the interview, we can see that Helena is indeed a good person with a good heart. I hope she can find a way out of this..
Thanks, Im sure she will appreciate that
way to usa, whole thirdworld going that direction while we westerner going to the East, each one his Eldorado
Thank you so much for your integrity and your advocacy. I hope things turn out for the better
Hi Karl, when we arrived in this country last year as a student, we were treated like the most valuable guest in this country. Now within just one year they are treating us as if we are criminals or terrorists and trying to get rid of us by any means. This is so so unfair. The 35+ aged student did not come to this country illegally or exploiting the system. We came because the ministers literally advertised to come to this country offering an extended period for a 485 visa. Now in the middle of the journey how come they say "oops!! it was a mistake"? How come a developed country like Australia makes this unfair decision? I don't even know how it's even legal? Our countries are not developed but our system at least has some fairness and our courts would never allow such an unfair decision.
Yes! Very corrupt country!
If its so corrupt go home. Lifes not fair and we decided there are too many immigrants here exploiting our systems
Here’s to yet another great informative video by a real person and not the “faceless men”
thanks!
Thanks Helena and Karl. It is soo overwhelming. I keep thinking about it every minute while I am trying to study my exams. It is soo stressful and distracting. I cannot focus my exams!
Hope you can focus on what is ahead of you right now
Thank you Carl again for your concern regarding the 485 thing. I wonder why they are so adamant to include a transition period for those who are unfairly affected?
Every second, I hope immigration department will release grandfather clause on their website for current students. I can not concentrate on my job. Put some pressure on them Karl plzzz......
How can rules be applied retrospectively? This is so incomprehensible ! 😢😢😢
They should not be
My uni (UTS) is not releasing the final results of Autumn 2024 semester unless student is >35 years old... I really want to apply for 485 early but i can't :(
Thanks so much, Karl and AILS team! I feel ripped off by the DHA to be honest. Your effort is the only sliver of hope I'm clutching at! Thanks again!
I like your advocacy and videos you produced Karl. If only it's consistent on consultation which made no difference from others that charge huge amount of fees at the initial consultation. Certainly your advocacy look so 'pure'
I'm also suffering similar kind of Helena. Age restriction on 485 visa badly impact my life
Thank you Karl for all your efforts.. you are doing a great job giving us all the information!!
I appreciate that!
Hi Karl, thank you for all your information. Finally after 9 years my partner received both invitations (as carpenter) for 190 and then 189 and now we have 60 days to apply. Can you please suggest which visa should we proceed to apply for? Is there any possibility to know what visa can be processed faster? Thank you 😊
What will happened to the 190 and 491 EOI's already submitted ?
Hi Karl, my question to you is for those who already received student visa after 485 visa, are they allow to apply for further student visa or not.
so what is the meaning for the people who are finishing their 485 this year.
Hi, how are you?
Karl, could you please tell me can a secondary applicant of 485 visa holder apply for a student visa after July please reply
The petition for 485 visa has been closed for above 21000. When will the result will come?
Hi karl thank you for the updates and follow-ups that you provide us everytime. I have a question though, i have submitted my EOI on 14 may 2024 with 80 points for 189 visa as civil engineer and have yet to receive any email of invitation till date. Does this mean i have not been invited or my eoi is kept for the next invitation rounds. Btw i have also applied a 190 eoi with 85 points as civil engineer to expand my chances of getting an invitation. What do you think? Do i have any chances for migrating to Australia? (Fingers crossed)
Hi
Thank you AILS for supporting us. I am also an international student currently doing masters by coursework. I came to Australia in 2023 with the hope that I will complete my masters degree and then get working visa to gain more work experience in Australia. Like many I have also sacrificed and invested many to come here. I have left my family back in my country and took huge education loan to cover the expenses. But all of sudden bringing such changes is really stressing and devastating for me. I really appreciate the Australian rules and do not have any issues with the rules. But it is really unfair if it is applied to those who are already here and studying. Hope the government will allow transition period/grandfather clause to make it fair to onshore students.
We are hoping they will do the right thing afterall it is something they should be doing anyway
Hi Karl can someone on 485 (expiring this month) apply for student subsequent entrant visa who’s spouse is on student visa and in the middle of study?
Hopefully we can hear some good news for all those affected with this change.
What about students who changed their course after 1 year of study in masters course to another masters course in same university, will they be negatively impacted in the student visa extension?
Hi karl,
I hope you are well. I was on 485 visa but i got my 491 visa grant last month. Do i need to withdraw my 485 visa or it will automatically cancel. Please let me know. Thanks
Mr Karl
How long could a 491 provisional Visa stay outside Australia without affecting their transition to 191 visa, because some people say that the length of stay offshore for 491 visa holder should not exceed 60 Continuous days or 90 cumulative per annum??
Thank you, Karl, for all your information, which we can rely on.
Always!

I want to ask u
If I have got partner visa 309 and 100 too at a same time

Guys, let's just go to other countries. If they slam the door shut then we should be willing to walk away and NEVER look back. Have some self respect
I agree 100% that’s exactly what you should do.
As an Aussie I agree pick another country to study in we cannot absorb the number of people that are coming here on study visas. Dont believe what the education industry or immigration agents tell you about opportunities once you complete your studies they are unlikely to come to fruition all they want is your money....
@@user-bi8wp6wy3lthe number of international students at around 700K is unsustainable. Australia should have no more than 100-200K international student, to be frank this so called education export is a scam. The PR pathway along with post graduate working rights should be scrapped. In USA international students do not have working rights whilst studying, we should adopt the same.

Hi Karl,
Will I lose my eligibility when they introduce the new points system? I've done my skill assessment by obtaining the Professional Year, but they gonna remove that option. Skill assessments expire after a few years. What happens if I need to redo my assessment?
As yet there is no new points system, just proposals. Lets see what happens. Stay tuned
Hello Karl, I have a question regarding whether I should use the CDR or Washington Accord pathway for Engineers Australia skills assessment. I have a Masters degree in Industrial engineering from an US university. My work experience is related to my Masters degree and my bachelors degree is in a different field of engineering (Mechanical). I don't see my masters engineering program accredited under ABET (comes under Washington Accord). The bachelors of Industrial engineering degree program at my university however is accredited under Washington accord. I want to use my Masters degree and work experience for skills assessment. Do I need to select CDR or Washington Accord pathway for my Engineers Australia skills assessment? Thanks a lot!
If you can use the Washington accord then it is much easier
I understand using Washington accord is easier. But can I still use the Washington accord option even if my Masters degree is not ABET accredited?
What about agricultural consultant??
Thank you so much Karl!

Hello sir , can you tell me how many days DOHA take to grant subclass 482 medium term visa after submitting all the documents?
No way of telling, check their processing times
Hi Karl, thank you for your perseverance and the quality of analysis you give us every week.
Just a query since I am waiting for my 190 visa. How realistic are 14 months for processing times for 190 visas? Would May 23 non priority lodged applications receive grants by July 24? Or is it likely that the times will increase further?
12-18 months should be expected for the 190 visa. Hang in there, it will happen. Thanks for the positive feedback
Hey Karl thanks for the video again! Do you have any insights to potential processing times for this 189 round? Is it likely to stay at 3 months? Cheers
It may get back to a 3 monthly cycle, yes
@@ailsaustralia thanks for the reply. So 3 months from lodging application to visa grant?

Sir what's about the subsequent entrant one there is no clear about this one on whether can apply student visa or not.
Pretty sure they will not be able to but lets wait for the detail
My partner has been accepted into uni for her masters but I’m worried that she will get refused her student visa. Her current covid visa expires the end of August but she is starting uni on the 7th July. With all these changes and refusals happening whilst the government decides what to do whilst the world is still turning is a rather unsettling place to be.
Understand how you feel, hope you get the visa granted
Hi Karl what about visa subclass 309? Thanks
Are you saying tradies have higher chance to gain PR?
Hi Karl, i hope you will be good.
Can a 476 visa holder go for student visa after 1 july? 476 visa is not in the list of effected visas like 485 and tourism visa etc
No mention about 476 so it should be fine
Where to enrol in australia that would likely be a factor that my visa will be granted
Thank you Karl for all your information.
My pleasure!
Thanks Karl. I have a question. Can someone on a visitor visa with a 8503 condition apply for the 491 Subsequent entrant Visa from onshore?
No
No
So what about those priority profession people working in the field but visa expiring soon! They cried for them before and now suddenly kicking them out? What’s the point!
Maybe Australia doesn’t need those priority profession people after all. Sending conflicting messages to the world really does not help the issue at all. I bet some would firmly or further believe Australia is a country with no credibility whatsoever.
Yeah I know, completely illogical behaviour
Lots of pressures and anxiety right now😢
Hope they do the right thing so no more stress for anyone
Hi Karl, thank you so much for supporting us. The rules shouldn’t be applied for the students who came before the decision was declared on the end of 2023. We came in a hope that we will get an Australian experience after our graduation but our hope is diminishing. I hope the House agrees on the petition placed. 😢
I left Australia this February because of this age cap
Sorry to hear that
Sorry bro all will be well somewhere else
Actually is true. When australias wealthy life feels odd or threaten... Australia love immigrants
Same but due to the shit rules
I’m back home happy sorting business fk that country
There should be apprenticeship opportunities after the completion of vocational courses for 2 years and then pathway to pr, rather than finding employer sponsorship which not many students able to find because of having no experience under there belt and they end up applying new student visa to remain onshore.
Why is it up to Australia to train foreigners in vocational skills or trades why dont we put the money and effort into training young Australians instead ? If you want to emmigrate to Australia and you have the skills go through the same process as any other prospective immigrant. My grandchildren are currently battling to find an apprenticeship in the trades sorry I am not in favour of giving those opportunities away to people who are here on temporary visas.
I agree with Helena, if I should know before I come here that over 35 yrs old couldn't get graduate visa, after graduation , I shouldn't gived up everything what I have in my country. It was really big decision i made. Thanks Karl for still motivating us, hoping this transistion visa for us will not taken for granted.

Not sure as there is no new test made yet. probably not till 2026
What a moment, hunh? I can't believe I would say that Peter Dutton would create a better scenario than Claire? When I lodged my first visa to Australia, no much longer than two years ago, they were refunding the fees and now I'm scared to lodge the next visa and they stole the fee refusing it.

Did any university lecturer get 189 Or 190 invite this year?
Not that we know of
Hi Karl, hope you are doing well.
As they are asking the international students to find job in their field and get PR, is it really that easy as it sounds?
I have applied more than 100 companies and got rejected because of my visa status with 485. One my friends also faced the same!
What do you think government should do for the fresh graduates so that they can manage a job in their field without any problem of "CITIZENSHIP OR PR" term in the job description?
Would love to hear from you about this please.
A lot of businesses are no longer taking risks with students or new graduates who don't have PR or citizenship. My friend is a chef and has been told not to hire graduates or students that are none citizens or don't have pr as the government is clamping down and making it more expensive to sponsor workers plus they could be removed from the country at anytime.
As you can see, the new imogration laws have already made an impact on small businesses.
@wesleyreid3174 exactly that's what is happening! My point in that case then why the government making changes in such way that having a job will give extra benefits! We are literally betrayed by the government without any doubt! If they don't want us to get PR even if having the potential to get it, why they overpromised and allured us to come here to invest thousands and thousands of dollars and study here? Is it fair at all?
Aren't they hypocrites?
@akiburrahman8051 It's the government pointing the finger at students blaming them for the housing crisis to win votes, they think by forcing students to leave will solve the problem, instead of stopping forgrien investors buying up every home and driving the property make up.
I've said it before you should only be allowed to buy property in Australia is you are a citizen or PR.
The plan is to cut the population size as of now we are at the population level that we should be at in 2040. Smaller population less jobs needed but low and small growth in gdp.
It doesn't look good for international students at all, even the EU and UK are going the same way.
I really don't know what you and your friend can do I don't think the government is going to back down on this.

They are creating their own problems
@@ailsaustralia if we create a problem for ourselves then thats Australias buisness isnt it ? The government is trying to tackle growing anger within their electorates about the insanely high level of immigration that has happened since the covid lockdown ended.. There are currently over 750.000 people here just on temporay student visas alone and this rate of immigration is putting a huge strain on both infrastructure and services. Think about it with 750.000 students in the system (which is not counting those who are actually Australian) in a country of only 27 million how many vacancies do you think are going to generated year on year in those fields.
My wife is pursuing trade course and she will be turning 35 years, 8 month, 11 days on February 2025 when she would assumingly complete her course. Does anyone has clarity for 35 years age criteria? Should it be 34 years and 364 days old at the time of application or 35 years and 364 days old at the time of lodging an application for the 485 TGV?

Why even hold masters in research different from masters in coursework??
Master by research usually required a stricter background (I.e., able to present a research proposal and found a suitable supervisor during application) instead of just fulfilling a minimum score to get into the program. Also, students usually require a probation(usually 6 months) and major review period during their first year of candidature.
Hence, master by research is essentially different from master by coursework.
But of course to be fair, master by research students are generally still younger than the PhDs and it does not necessarily mean coursework is not a difficult program to get into.
Yes there should be no diference
my masters program is 2 years (July 2024 - July 2026). By the time the course is completed in July 2026, i would be 36.
However, if i finish it within 18 months, means at early 2026, I'm still 35 years and 10 months old, am I eligible to apply 485 visa? or they only consider the official academic finish date of the course (July 2026)? thanks
We are not sure of the details but if you can finish a 2 year course in 18 months then that should be fins. Please book a time to check
