To this day, this is still one of the best "super move exhibitions" I've ever seen. The editing isn't flashy or overbearing, but it's really clever and thematic. A joy to watch, even years later.

These fusions are so good. Shiki LV 1: neku just started the game, and suddendly he has to actively interact with a human being. He does so for simple battle purpose, so he is really aggressive. LV 2 he is actually getting to know Shiki and respecting her, and even supporting her as she has a depression moment on day 6, so this line is more of a "you can count on me". LV 3 their relationship has fully evolved, they are still focused on the fight but neku simply putting in a joke means a lot considering his initial personality, and he is finally capable of interacting with people. Joshua LV 1 he feels stuck with this annoying kid who thinks he's the boss, while neku is clearly the more experienced one, and doesn't like getting bossed around, so both kinda do their own thing. LV 2 as the week progresses Joshua mocks neku more and more, questioning his intelligence, his view on life, and his abilities. Instead of getting mad, neku answers mockingly as well, encouraging Josh to give his best. LV 3 is where shit start to get philosophical, after their othersaregarbageimfinewithmyself shenanigans they have a kinda intellectual friendship. Their world view grew to be similar, and so does their relationship. Beat 1 being a reaper, beat is clearly stronger in battle (his damage is crazy btw, like, seriously), and his hot-headed nature moves him towards an aggressive style. He encourages neku to keep up with him, for winning purpose. LV 2 beat and neku get to know each other much better, understand their past, beat shows his soft side, and therefore, beat sounds sure about his partner and openly challenging opponents his time, using a line he probably practiced for ages, considering the way he talks, and neku, absorbing a bit of his partner's aggression, also mocks/dares his opponents. LV 3 both have now perfect sinergy, and fully understood each other and are now friends. Both respect and share each others goals. This last dialogue represents their will to win the battle, for what they feel everyone's sake. Idk it's just how they feel to me
I love that in the Final Fusion, Neku speaks to Joshua last. I always imagined that while this is Neku tapping into the Imagination of all his friends, he's also borrowing some of Joshua's power as Composer to really do some damage.
Dang I actually did not know about fusion attacks beyond level 1 until I reached Joshua's week😂 I always shout out their catchphrases everytime they do a fusion attack together lol

So with that in mind, I'm guessing the reason they chose this specific diologue to round out their sync attacks was because the subject of life and death (highlighted by the constant suspicion that Joshua killed Neku), and the discussion of life philosophies in general, was the core foundation of their intellectual friendship. It's also worth noting how Neku (the seasoned UG player that had experienced a great deal of time in the Reaper's Game/afterlife) is the one to tell the enemy "another world awaits", because he's experienced that world for himself, while Joshua (the Composer, and one responsible for killing Neku) decides that "you're going". Shiki's: Go-go Gear at Molco and 104 Joshua's: Import Stylings at Shibukyu Main Store and Pegaso Atelier at Shibu Dept. Store Beat's: B-Style threads at 104 and Wild Boar at Udagawa back streets.
Gives me goosebumps watching these fusion attacks again, especially after going through the whole game and understanding the significance of all 4 bringing in their power to defeat the final boss. :D

While Neku certainly isn't stupid, he's not devious enough (and probably not curious/nosey enough) to keep up with Joshua and Vanitas once they start making plans, especially is the latter two are competing with each other. Plus, both Joshua and Vanitas have access to resources that would blindside anyone not within their level(s) of power. (I haven't seen everything Vanitas can do, so I'm not even sure if he's in the same "weight class" as Joshua...but Joshua doesn't exactly play it straight).
I really hope Neo will have personalized synch attacks like these. In the demo, there's something similar, but the ultimate attack you get is solely based on the attack you use, not your partner. And there's no cutscene.

@@IIxIxIv The bonuses are just for performing combos in general, but yeah, there are a quite a few banterous voice lines, though they just cycle randomly instead of actually being based on the progressing relationships between the characters. So I can absolutely see why it's not as satisfying.
