haven’t gotten to that part but the way I’ve been treating my life this really resonated w me. It’s time to start living.
Around 2006, during a class taught by Rickson, he stopped and said “we no gonna train today, we gonna praktix our breath.” And so, that’s all we did, the point being to “stay calm and don’t panic when a guy 50 pounds heavier trying to choke you. There’s a way out, no panic…and I don’t mean that jus for the mat, I mean that for life.”
Words from Rickson that solidified his place in my life as a mentor, helping me in my marriage, fatherhood, career, and of course Jiu Jitsu.

59 year old, started 2 months ago at a Relson academy. I am overweight and the oldest guy there. The first month I felt badly beat up, my knees ached, it took a full day in between to recover…but I LOVE IT ! After 2 months, my knees are fine with proper stretching and my recovery time keeps getting shorter. I hope to be a good training partner, get some great exercise, make some wonderful friends, and be a learning sponge. Get my black belt by 70 ?….who knows, but what a great journey !

After reading Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa and listening to this, I feel like Rickson is the modern day Miyamoto Musashi. An undefeated samurai, strategist and philosopher living by the bushido code.

I train Kenjutsu (actually the style funded by Miyamoto Musashi Sensei) in Brazil for 20 years now (at Niten Institute, Jorge Kishikawa Sensei). It's very different from Jiu-Jitsu but I can relate with all Mr. Gracie is talking about. In a intuitive way, it is pure Bushido. Like when he's talking about never running up his brother Rolls in tournaments or when he talks about always putting yourself in the hardest position. A true warrior master.
You have a feint image of Musashi that could never live up to the person himself.
I remember when Fabio would bring Dean, Jocko and Jeff Higgs up to the Pico acadamy to train. I was fortunate to be in that first generation of students that got to train daily with Rickson in his prime and witness many of the stories they talk about.
Professor Akins, are you ever gonna tell the internet the gym stories? I read from the internet a story that you told where Rickson made a world champ tap from side control pressure.
I watch Kama Jiujitsu videos, and Prof Ryan Young says that Dave is the best blackbelt produced by Rickson in his opinion.

I was thinking the same. As in, what's the thought process of the type of person to dislike free content of this magnitude? What are those people like to spend time around or live with? They're the type of person that thinks they come off really cool when they, unsolicited, tell people nearby all the stuff they can't stand or tell people what popular things are "actually kinda lame."

These podcasts helped me get through the 5-4 shifts, I used to feel like a loser having to work at 5am but Jocko made it cool to get up that early to work. After a year, I decided to quit that job to go to college and I still happen to listen regardless.

Jocko's much more frequent laughs almost seem a bit deferential to Rickson's bad ass quotient. People tend to laugh when the human Silverback in the room makes a joke. If not that, then at least Jocko sees the two of them as disparate branches affixed to the same tree of warriordom. That's saying something.

The story on Rockson is tough to listen to. Who knew this story was so intense and incredibly personal? Rickson is truly a real samurai. Only the greatest son of helio Gracie could admit so many humbling things.
I was born in Rio in 89 and lived all over Brazil until I left in 2012. My mother was acquaintanced with most of the Gracie family and hung out with them in several occasions, every once in a while she would tell me about them when I was a kid. I discovered Jocko's on his first or second podcast episode and now I'm seeing Rickson on Jocko's podcast. This is like seeing people from two parallel universes get together, what a cool thing.
The level of humility is unbelievable! A true legend…

I’ve never heard someone put it like that. A very honest and unique perspective that can also be a metaphor for life. When we’re young we’re full of passion and hope and energy but as we become more accustom to failure and tribulations, we lose sight of the person we once were. We’d much rather try to fit in rather than stand out and push the needle in a different direction because our confidence over the years has waned from feeling like we failed to accomplish the mission we initially set out to do.
This episode might be the single greatest podcast ever released on any platform to date. OSS.

Rickson underwent to a very impressive Arc of Growth. In a certain sense, those who follow him, can clearly understand how he evolved from the pure physical fighting technique to a secular spiritual way of life. In a certain sense, he really looks like Musashi in his journey from _JITSU to DO_
As a Jiu Jitsu practitioner, I feel this episode is necessary as a history lesson from someone so deeply involved. Very interesting episode 😄
Now I know how the military guys must feel when Jocko brings on military legends like Dakota Meyer, Mike Thornton, and John Stryker Meyer. Rickson is the Michael Jordan of jiu jitsu and to be able to watch him converse with an OG bjj black belt like Jocko for 3.5 hours is amazing!!

It was epic to hear about Rolls Gracie! I always wanted to know more about him. Rolls taught my Jiujitsu professor, Charles Gracie whom I received my blue belt under back in 2011.

Best two years of my life when I’d show up on Tuesday and Thursday nights and Rickson was there teaching both nights. Miss the old Wilshire Academy and all the characters we had there.

Around a decade ago I was dealing with a lot of anger issues so I moved out of the US into the favelas in Rio. I obtained a full time job at a soda bottling factory working on the assembly line. I met Rickson not long after and would have private breathing lessons from him regularly. He taught me much and I'll never forget our experience together

there is no invisible jiu jitsu. There are only skills and small adjustments to your position that you dont have enough experience to see or verbalise yet.

its because of the lifetime of perfecting each and every tiny detail of the choke ...things you can not see ...only be learned by being explained to in depth while finding out for yourself...the way he feels superior when he's in Mount or side control is because of the nuances of his application of techniques and there's a reason everyone says he's the best
Yuri Teixeira Mendes yes I do I’ve been training bjj for over a decade. Invisible jiu jitsu doesn’t exist. It’s just a skill level you haven’t reached and the instructor cannot verbalise. Rickson himself can’t explain these subtle details so he just calls it invisible jiu jitsu. There is no magic here.

I'm 64yrs old training at Victory MMA in San Diego. I suffer from rumathoid arthritis and training is painful. But I'm a old Marine and I embrace the struggle.

I trained w Rickson in the early 90s in Pico and my first class with him was amazing. It was a private lesson with him and I was so nervous because I knew he was the greatest , he told me relax my friend. He obviously felt my nervousness and tension. He always made me feel like a child on the mat.

@@SamSam-80 I’ve seen him train with big black black belts, former Olympic Heavyweight wrestler from Greece, top Black belts in their prime and he really was that good. I know it’s hard to believe because there is not much video of him but he really was amazing.

In the late 90s when I first got into Jiu-Jitsu, a friend gave me his copy of the Rickson documentary called "Choke" to watch. Needless to say, he greatly influenced my own Jiu-Jitsu journey to this day. I like that his book is called "Breathe", a contrast to "Choke"! Rickson is a legit warrior in every way (as is Jocko). This was a great podcast. Oss!!

When he tells the story of his sons death and the Tattoo I broke down bad . I was in the park walking my dog listening to this and all of a sudden I became a ball of tears my dog looked concerned and confused. For me, Rickson is the greatest Gracie. I just watched his documentary called Choke. I was glued to my TV. His philosophies have really inspired me.
Simply the most powerful podcast i have ever watch, they are both the definition of what it means to be human.
Saw the Takada fight while living in Fukuoka Japan, truly epic. That’s all my English students talked about for the next two weeks. The Japanese have much respect for Rickson.
The fluidity and amount of pressure that a really good Jiu Jitsu practitioner can apply is truly amazing. And it’s really hard to explain.

I’m a fan of a few podcasts but you sir are my favorite for a few reasons! One is that you give so much honor and respect to the one you interviewed and the many hero’s you share with us but most importantly you allow them to talk without trying to speak for them you just allow it to happen! Much respect to you sir and I only wish I was able and close enough to train with some of you it’s an honor to be a student of this great life only when we can share it with honorable people! I trained a bit at Ricksons academy. Unbelievablely amazing times. I also trained at the Gracie academy in Torrance. Got to roll with Ralek whilst the great Helio was sitting on a chair on the mat. He watched for what seemed like an eternity as Ralek beat my ass. He was 5 years my junior and I out weighed him by maybe 40 pounds! I stood no chance but it was still my pleasure and honor. Mad love to the entire Gracie family.
Granted I have many, many Jocko podcasts yet to hear. This one got more spiritual than any I’ve heard thus far. So good.
I remember the classes at the Pico studio which was shared with a Shotokan school back in the day! It was behind the Martial Arts store KI. I lived only blocks away at the time. I also remember the Wilshire school near Barrington. This was by far one of the best interviews I have ever heard. I have a poster of Helio in my home which I look at every day. It’s very inspiring! I got submitted 3 times in 5 minutes with hard chokes by an older Hispanic black belt dude today. I'm no spring chicken at 33 but I am very strong at 6'3 250 lbs and this old guy whooped my butt lol. Only been doing bjj like 2 weeks but I've been doing all the classes and live rolls trying to get good, fast. Throat effing hurts. Honestly thought about quitting. But then I heard this podcast when Rickson said his greatest enemy was his mind. Having a poor mindset like I do right now. I'm inspired to keep at it and keep working hard. What a great podcast I think I'll buy his book!

He's able to talk about virtually every experience he's ever had and what he took away and learnt from it, and in such detail that you know he's not just rattling off clichéd life lessons. He breaks things down with such clarity as well, even basic thoughts are told with such precision that you can't help but see them from a new, much clearer, perspective. I lived in Brazil for a few years so also love how much of a thoroughlt carioca guy he comes across as, from his skin tone, to his accent, to his easy going nature. What a life, what a guy.
