I think fashion was inevitably bound to become over-consumed, just Tik Tok sped that process up x10. I’m just thankful that I experienced my “fashion journey” and now, years later, I’m comfortable with where I’m at as far as style goes.
Tiktok speeds the process for bigger consumption with other things as well , tiktok sneaker boom & car community which I both consumed before tiktok gave them bigger exposure
Same, I'm very picky in what kind of stuff I'm buying. I only buy something that can complement my other pieces in my closet, and I only have 3 different outers, pants, 2 different shoes that I always alternates whenever I go outside (although I have tons of t shirt because I always change them every day). I will never understand how people could over indulge themselves into buying new clothes.
People are taking fashion way too seriously now just to flex on each other, fashion is fun and a way for me to express MYSELF and imma keep it that way.

One positive thing about being broke is you have to really think whether you want the item or not . There were so many trends i was absolutely convinced I needed but by the time I had extra cash to spend I instantly forgot about them.
i bought a lot of clothes a while ago and gained a lot of weight since then, so i didn't fit into them. I'm currently losing weight and am revisiting my old wardrobe to see what i can wear again and a lot of the clothes i got back when i was slimmer are just ugly now. i chased after a few trends that i didn't think would get dated so fast, but here i am with some clothes that look out of fashion but haven't been worn once. it made me rethink how i choose to clothe myself and now I'm going for my timeless pieces and relying on shoes to "keep up" with the trend. i wear them out quickly so it's better i spend a year with a pair of what was popular then move onto the next thing.
The fact that Tik Tok is so fast and people are pushed to posting 3 videos a day (instead like one video a week on youtube or like 2/3 photos a week on instagram) forces fashion to be so fast and to top or reinvent what's the most popular thing at the moment. Tik Tok fashion is just a giant boiling pot.
Something I've found interesting is that, especially on tiktok, mass amounts of clothing are being used to substitute a personal style. You do not need a personal style if you can dress in every way under the sun. And in many ways I think this ties in to alienation from the actual clothes making process. I've found is that once you start making your own clothing, the impulse to buy clothes immediately plummets and it essentially forces a personal style through necessity, i.e. 'what the fuck am I actually making'. This has an added benefit of being able to personalize your wardrobe to *your* wants and needs, not the wants of social media because once you spend all that time designing the piece, making pattern, sourcing the fabric(s), and then actually sewing it, you are going to start prioritizing real quick. It essentially slows down your wheel of fashion trends turnover. For example, I still have an unfinished crochet sweater vest that I'm trying to finish up from back when it was 'trendy' in 2020, is it a bit out of style? Maybe but damn I made it, it's in pretty good quality, I am going to wear it. Now am I saying that everyone needs to start sewing their entire wardrobe asap? No that shit takes a while and we got things to do and bills to pay. But what I am saying is to essentially reacquaint yourself with the actual process of making clothing, whether it's by adding some details to a ready made piece or just watching some sewing tutorials (just be aware that fast fashion has it's claws in the sewing community as well but that also relates to productivity and giving the algorithm what it wants in order to stay relevant and paid)
i really like this take a lot bc i’ve definitely been feeling more in tune with myself and my style after i learned how to fix/make my own clothes. im still influenced by trends ofc but i’ve been learning how to make trendy clothes, like leg/arm warmers and crochet, and it’s really nice bc i’ve developed like a special connection to the garment where i’m confident i’ll still treasure and wear it even if it “falls out of style”. also it’s just more personally rewarding when you make ur own clothes
as a metal fan i make a lot of band tees , posters , patches etc by myself and i think its amazing how i can turn a plain white tee shirt into something new ! im also learning to crochet which also helps me relax. making my own clothes is one of the best choices ive made in my life, i cant recommend it enough. its a great way to go against consumerism and fast fashion by upcycling what you already have :)
This video speaks to me so much Frl. Anytime I go on TikTok I feel like I dress bad I don’t have enough money for fashion. This simply isn’t the case I’m probably more into fashion then 99% of the world except that niche 1% I probably have spent a lot more money on my closet then most of the world as well. When I walk outside I rarely see people wearing the stuff I see on there I’m not even talking about the crazy fits I’m talking about even more generic stuff like ramones seen maybe 2-3 pairs irl ever.
I feel that, I remember I was just talking about ald new balances like everyone and their mom had them. None of my friends knew what I was talking about at the time (about a year ago) and I realized how I just expected everyone to be hyper consuming TikTok fashion

I'm always look good because i live in Jamaica we don't wear fashionable clothes so when i wear all my clothes that are hand me downs and style them , i look great and I'm more fashionable than most guys here . I don't have to try hard to look good, thankfully ☺️.
The other thing too is a lot of these young fashion influencers on social media get shit from popping / upcoming brands for free. I keep that in mind when I'm stressing about buying shit and feeling broke.

I’ve drastically reduced my social media consumption and kinda feel like i can be myself again without judging/hating myself constantly.

ive had tiktok deleted for about a month now, my life has genuinely become a lot better, more than i expected. I feel less judgemental and more aware and surprise, surprise - more in the moment. To be fair I have been feeling like this about fashion for the past couple months. I've lost over 35kgs in the past 2 years and so I had to change my clothes cuz they were too big for me lol so last year I went on a mini "haul" from fashions like h&m, pull&bear, reserved because yea their price is very convenient for people who can't afford better clothes. After a while after getting those clothes from those fast fashion brands I've realized that my wardrobe was too full with too many of the same stuff( i've bought mostly simple colored shirts and hoodies and jeans which is sort of my fault lol i guess???) and I've come to the realization that I should better start saving up money, even tho its a big challenge for me cuz I like to treat myself how often as I can "sadly", I'm saving up enough to buy quality clothes each few months or a few times per year depending on what I find from the stores in my city because I live in Romania and the shippment cost would be too much for me to handle. So lesson learned, save up the money to ONE good quality clothing item(pair of jeans,shoes,jacket,whatever) than rather buy 3-5 t-shirts and hoodies that their quality will disappear in a few weeks.

im from romania too, i m average size and with enough luck i found some nice pieces at different thrift stores ( i live in a smaller city too) i got lucky and flund a pair of beige cargos my size and paid 1 leu for them. also outlets tend to have smaller sizes too

Good video! As someone that has 0 social media left (TH-cam doesn’t count) and never having tik tok. I can’t help but feel it’s not that tik tok is making us more stupid. Majority of mind numbing vapid people have always existed in quantity. It’s just that tik tok brings these people to light. These people just have a voice now which they never had. Almost everyone is some type of mini celebrity. So rather than lose hope in humanity just think they have always been around and all you need to do to live life like how it was is deactivate all social media and just live. Life has been slower ever since, it’s been over a year now. Peaceful, quiet and you just kind of stop caring what’s everyone else is doing. You dress in a LITERAL SENSe for yourself and no one else. Critical analysis of anything is fair. People have forgotten that critique and hate are two different things. I really enjoy your content. I've been saying for a while a lot of people CAN dress well. The thing is people forget that part of your style is rooted in your personal tastes and personality. People try to make personalities a trend which is why many look like they're wearing a costume instead of something that seems to flow effortlessly.
Finally someone that talk about this, I uninstalled tiktok because the anxiety these tiktoks made me feel. And what is the worst thing about this type of content that is in the internet (especially tiktok) is that they make you think that is useful information. Like if you watch this you are going to dress well and feel better about you wardrobe. That is pure shit. Best decision of my life uninstalling that shitty app.
It’s weird fashion was spread by what celebrities wore during their red carpet walk or what they wore when MTV got a picture of them, but now we’ve been setting the fashion trends and celebrities are copying them but then it creates a cycle of what I said before and it’s causing fast fashion to become faster than ever before and then causes more people to “stuff their face” with whatever is being put in front of them, rather than people finding what they really like and finding what suits them better

Just because your feed shows everyone dressed to the max doesn’t mean they dress like that 24/7. I’d suggest not getting on TikTok as much, being exposed to so much content that’s pushed on you can lead to insecurity or depression.
One thing we viewers of fashion social media content often forget is that these people online do this fashion for a living. They are „content creators“ and therefore produce as much content as possible. We often fall into the trap of relatability, because they seem to live a normal life like we do. So we assume that we „normal“ people should buy these huge amount of clothes aswell. Social media really pretends that this is the standard and you have to achieve this. I tried to be a social media influencer back in 2017 for a year with posting a picture every single day and its crazy what amount of clothes you need to have to even achieve this. I mostly bought fast fashion clothes and after a photoshoot I sent them back. 😵💫 Great video! ✌️🔥 This thing is so obviously but people need to actively hear it, to understand the huge psychological impact and general interests of capitalsm and the fast fashion industry.

On 2005 some harajuku trends and emo scene started on my City (Santiago de Chile) and lots of people lived in pretty bad neighborhoods. A way for them to do it was carrying the clothes, makeup, hairspray into their backpacks... Arriving to the center of the city and find a bathroom to change into and finishing their style. Then they would gather outside of the building where most popular stores were located. Just to chat about music, clothes, life... Uniforms and dresscodes at schools were really strict so hair extensions, make up and color hair spray were really popular, mini flat iron were required to achieve the messy hairstyle. Safety first. Wear a hoodie and jeans on top and you can add the rest on the bus/train. Arriving you find a bathroom and do your hair and makeup. Women's bathroom have better mirrors and light, but men's bathroom have more toilet paper and soap. This kind of modus operandi isn't new, most people on harajuku did it this way since the 90's. It may sound like a costume and not a genuine style but it's safer, contact some friends and go together to have some fun, eat ice cream, have a picnic, go window shopping, to the library or to take some pictures.
I have some cool cloths that I wear from time to time but I also have some causal basics like Gildan hoodies. I noticed for the most of the time I tend to wear Gildan instead of my expensive cloths. I just throw them on and don’t really care if they get dirty or stolen or whatever
with the fashion thing, a good thing to do is be anxious, if you go outside with all that shit on, people are gonna look at you and laugh and talk about you behind ur back. But no one cares if you just wear jeans and a t-shirt! hope this helps 💖
I've been thinking about this a lot lately. The oversaturation of fashion related content combined with the pressure to wear a different and interesting outfit every day has made ma want to put together a single perfect work/school outfit that I could just wear every day. This would eliminate the stress I feel every morning when I need to decide what to wear. Thank you for making this great video!
This video just highlights the dangers of social media and how it encourages instant gratification and will Inevitably make people depressed because they have a grand vision of what things should be like normally.
'minimalist' and 'wearable' are antonyms for me (except when it comes to jewelry), but the overall point you're making is sound. I love my impulse purchases, but only about half of them stick around after I make them, and only because they go well with the long-term-desire-turned-reality purchases. The more you lean on what people online tell you, the more likely you are to regret what you end up buying. Like, I do not live the kind of life where I want to put on a blazer, or a white shirt of any description; every time I pick them up to have a more 'complete' wardrobe, they sit in the closet.

The 5 credit card thing you said was hilarious. Im 22 and currently working on improving my life in every way, especially financially. Obviously we can't do damn near anything without money so me growing up I was somewhat insecure bc I didnt grow up with money and seeing everyone me with the nicest things or even slightly better clothes made me feel bad. Then after time passed I was asking some of these people how were they getting their clothes and I eventually found out like you mentioned that it was credit card debt or even family giving them money. This one dude I knew even told me he would buy things or klarna and after pay and change his phone number and some extra shit just so the people couldn't reach him... and then I thought to myself Im glad I was never this insecure to go to these depths just to impress. There were time when I got money where I would buy a few shirts and pants when I didnt need but that was so far and few between. If I buy clothes with quality or even if just bc I really like them that im making sure I can afford them

I stumbled into your channel because of the algo -- beautiful hair, by the way. So I got into the fashion thing because I live in Japan and the city I live in, esp the nightlife district, everybody looks good. Fashionable, even. I'm an American nerd who didn't know how to dress, so I started googling basic shit like 'how to dress as a man' and came across Frugal Aesthetics, Fly with Johnny Thai, Parker York Smith, Tim Dessaint. I didn't really understand the concept of having a style that 'fit' me (I still don't) so I tried to copy these people and for a time I did go out and buy some somewhat expensive stuff (a bomber jacket, some air force 1's, even though I've NEVER worn these kinds of shoes). Now, I wear these things all the time and I feel comfortable in them, and I'm thankful for all the tips/theory into fashion that I discovered thru these channels. It lets me dress more intentionally. But even with that said, my closet was filled with Uniqlo stuff (since I live in Japan; very easy access, cheap too) that I didn't wear. I essentially donated down into a wardrobe that I wear every day. I think that these channels are a good place to stop if you're trying to figure out who you are in terms of how you want to dress, to learn ideas about color and silhouettes and .. fashion jargon. I never had an opinion on fashion, but now (because of these channels) I believe that fashion is a journey that is best done gradually. Sure, it's good to buy a statement piece or that really cool jacket, but I feel just buying massive amounts of clothing is just .. not the point of fashion. Unless you actually wear all that, then maybe..?

I defiantly think the next wave will be minimalism/eco fashion because these trends tend to cycle around. Just like makeup was all about being extra not long ago and now everything is going into the more "natural" look. Personally, after seeing almost 30years of these trends Ive learned to just wear what I like. Ive dressed alt (an umbrella term I use to just mean weird and using inspo from goth/punk/whatever else I like) since in hs and Im used to ppl either giving me looks or telling me they absolutely adore my style and theyd never have the guts. No matter what you wear there will be ppl that hate it and love it. Why waste the energy worrying about what other ppl think? I will use it as a filter as well because imo if someone cares that much about how another person dresses to try to call them out or shame them *cough*ppl who ride trends and shame ppl who dont*cough* then I probably wouldnt want to be their friend anyway
I started following Wisdom after I saw him on Frugal Aesthetic and his fits are cool, and the amount of work he puts into his craft is admirable; but I lost it when I saw him making sponsored content for H&M.
I also feel like there's now this intensified pressure to have an ~*aesthetic*~ home so GRWM video has the right vibe. when in fact living like that is sooo impractical and unrealistic, especially if you live with other people
Thank god I got into fashion just before fashion TikTok. it makes me sad to see some of my favorite niche brands get blown out by TikTok trends tho (Rick Owens). It makes me just wanna archive it for a couple years until it blows over just to bring it back out later.
My only simple rule in life with fashion is don’t follow trends don’t pay mind to these tik tok videos and find ways to be different, ofc we need some kind of influence so what I do is mix 2 different styles in one.. whenever I get influenced by a outfit from a classic movie or online I do my best not to copy what I saw but better yet remake something similar. But yea basically doing the opposite of what others are doing and ofc picking fits that you genuinely love.
In high school, I dressed very trendy. The problem is, my clothes were so uncomfortable. I would wear heavy jewelry that would hurt my neck. I would wear skinny jeans that were really skinny and I would be sitting down funny. I would wear heeled boots when my school was five stories and I had to climb the stairs in them. Now as a 26 year old, I have a uniform. In the winter, I wear a sweater, a pair of jeans and boots with grip. In the summer, I wear a t shirt, jean shorts and Converse usually (or a dress and Converse). Sometimes I’ll mix it up and wear Birkenstocks. Having a uniform made dressing so much easier for me. I will wear necklaces and rings to mix things up but I no longer am making myself suffer to look cute.
Its simple, wear the stuff you like & are comfortable with. Take the money you'd spend on all these goofy trends and invest it into a hobby that keeps or appreciates in value.
Daniel Simmons is a good fashion influencer tho. He doesn't hide that he is clearly rich. He almost always says "X brand gave this piece to me, they are really good" instead of making you think you should or are capable of buying them like other ""fashion"" influencers, he just gives a simple opinion of the product.

Tik Tok fashion is really ableist and classist. Also an aside on fast fashion for me, I used to shop a lot of fast fashion, but it’s only lead me to save multiple pieces for years. I still have a lot of pieces from when I was in high school lol. And being a punk and obsessed with diy made it so that I’m just interested in customizing things so I can enjoy them longer
I have 2-3 friends from whom I get advice, like how to pick up something, or what should I buy or not. the best part is that none of us are affected by tiktok fashion
for about a year now my wardrobe has been almost entirely centered around things that are practical for my work, culture, hobbies and lifestyle. since then I think my style has gotten a lot better and I feel better wearing wearing my clothes because my wardrobe is entirely genuine to who I am and how I live.
The need to look fashionable in order to validate opinions is so weird, and I think a focus on deconstructing that would foster a more confident fashion community in general. Your point about not being able to dress how I'd fully like because of safety really stuck with me as a girl, and the difference between fashion students/hobbyists who spend time in their closets and those who are chronically online is really obvious when it comes to these discussions. Not everyone is in a position to be wearing their Diesel micro mini skirts or Marc Jacobs platforms, but you will be judged as though you are. That's in part why the "FIT students tell you what's fashionable" type videos don't gel with me, they manage to seem so out of touch with the real world.
in my opinion tiktok can expose you to aesthetically pleasing shit that u can vibe with and incorporate into ur "style" even if it's kinda explore page core. also on the insecurities in my experience shit helped me by giving me inspiration to work on myself which in turn made me more confident but i'm sure it varies by person. those are the only 2 things i kinda took exception to otherwise great vid

I genuinely love fashion, my mom got me into it by dressing me up in such cute clothes and it’s just part of me to dress up fashionably. But yeah another reason why People love fashion is because it’s their way of feeling approved, I experimented last year in school by dressing up “bad” and looking pretty “ugly”, people treated me poorly and always expect less from me. Now I’m back to my normal self and everyone is treating me differently, a lot of people would interact with me now, they also help me in class by just straight up giving away the answers. Also if I was assigned at a table where there’s a friend group, they always ask me questions as if I was part of the conversation and their friendship… It’s how our world works, gotta play it I guess..

I'm slowly getting into it myself and while I'm still figuring out my style and what I like, I can really resonate with how you dress and can imagine myself going into a similar direction down the line. If I may give a bit of (hopefully) constructive feedback, I appreciate how your recent videos feel a bit more scripted and thought out. With older videos, while it seemed like you had a precise message, your wording could get redundant or repetitive at times; and sometimes that hindered how well the message was transmitted. I do appreciate how "conversational" the videos are though, and I do think there is an ideal middle ground between using a strict script, and an entirely unscripted discussion; and you seem to be getting closer and closer to that goldilocks zone. Well that's my two cents. Love the videos, excited for the next one :)
I don't have tik tok anymore and well I don't really like watching fashion shorts or reels. I prefer looking at runways because it was something that I always did when I was younger and still do lol. I never really liked looking at trends, if I loved an outfit, I'd admire it and hope to get it in the future. In other words, I prefer clothes that fit my personality and are timeless becahse those things never changed. But when I look at these people, I would think maybe that's just how they are. They want to alter their look based on how others dress to fit in I guess. 🤔

One positive thing about being broke is you have to really think whether you want the item or not . There were so many trends i was absolutely convinced I needed but by the time I had extra cash to spend I instantly forgot about them.

i bought a lot of clothes a while ago and gained a lot of weight since then, so i didn't fit into them. I'm currently losing weight and am revisiting my old wardrobe to see what i can wear again and a lot of the clothes i got back when i was slimmer are just ugly now. i chased after a few trends that i didn't think would get dated so fast, but here i am with some clothes that look out of fashion but haven't been worn once. it made me rethink how i choose to clothe myself and now I'm going for my timeless pieces and relying on shoes to "keep up" with the trend. i wear them out quickly so it's better i spend a year with a pair of what was popular then move onto the next thing.
The fact that Tik Tok is so fast and people are pushed to posting 3 videos a day (instead like one video a week on youtube or like 2/3 photos a week on instagram) forces fashion to be so fast and to top or reinvent what's the most popular thing at the moment. Tik Tok fashion is just a giant boiling pot.

Something I've found interesting is that, especially on tiktok, mass amounts of clothing are being used to substitute a personal style. You do not need a personal style if you can dress in every way under the sun. And in many ways I think this ties in to alienation from the actual clothes making process. I've found is that once you start making your own clothing, the impulse to buy clothes immediately plummets and it essentially forces a personal style through necessity, i.e. 'what the fuck am I actually making'. This has an added benefit of being able to personalize your wardrobe to *your* wants and needs, not the wants of social media because once you spend all that time designing the piece, making pattern, sourcing the fabric(s), and then actually sewing it, you are going to start prioritizing real quick. It essentially slows down your wheel of fashion trends turnover. For example, I still have an unfinished crochet sweater vest that I'm trying to finish up from back when it was 'trendy' in 2020, is it a bit out of style? Maybe but damn I made it, it's in pretty good quality, I am going to wear it.
Now am I saying that everyone needs to start sewing their entire wardrobe asap? No that shit takes a while and we got things to do and bills to pay. But what I am saying is to essentially reacquaint yourself with the actual process of making clothing, whether it's by adding some details to a ready made piece or just watching some sewing tutorials (just be aware that fast fashion has it's claws in the sewing community as well but that also relates to productivity and giving the algorithm what it wants in order to stay relevant and paid)
i really like this take a lot bc i’ve definitely been feeling more in tune with myself and my style after i learned how to fix/make my own clothes. im still influenced by trends ofc but i’ve been learning how to make trendy clothes, like leg/arm warmers and crochet, and it’s really nice bc i’ve developed like a special connection to the garment where i’m confident i’ll still treasure and wear it even if it “falls out of style”. also it’s just more personally rewarding when you make ur own clothes

as a metal fan i make a lot of band tees , posters , patches etc by myself and i think its amazing how i can turn a plain white tee shirt into something new ! im also learning to crochet which also helps me relax. making my own clothes is one of the best choices ive made in my life, i cant recommend it enough. its a great way to go against consumerism and fast fashion by upcycling what you already have :)

This video speaks to me so much Frl. Anytime I go on TikTok I feel like I dress bad I don’t have enough money for fashion. This simply isn’t the case I’m probably more into fashion then 99% of the world except that niche 1% I probably have spent a lot more money on my closet then most of the world as well. When I walk outside I rarely see people wearing the stuff I see on there I’m not even talking about the crazy fits I’m talking about even more generic stuff like ramones seen maybe 2-3 pairs irl ever.

To be fair I have been feeling like this about fashion for the past couple months. I've lost over 35kgs in the past 2 years and so I had to change my clothes cuz they were too big for me lol so last year I went on a mini "haul" from fashions like h&m, pull&bear, reserved because yea their price is very convenient for people who can't afford better clothes. After a while after getting those clothes from those fast fashion brands I've realized that my wardrobe was too full with too many of the same stuff( i've bought mostly simple colored shirts and hoodies and jeans which is sort of my fault lol i guess???) and I've come to the realization that I should better start saving up money, even tho its a big challenge for me cuz I like to treat myself how often as I can "sadly", I'm saving up enough to buy quality clothes each few months or a few times per year depending on what I find from the stores in my city because I live in Romania and the shippment cost would be too much for me to handle. So lesson learned, save up the money to ONE good quality clothing item(pair of jeans,shoes,jacket,whatever) than rather buy 3-5 t-shirts and hoodies that their quality will disappear in a few weeks.

Critical analysis of anything is fair. People have forgotten that critique and hate are two different things. I really enjoy your content. I've been saying for a while a lot of people CAN dress well. The thing is people forget that part of your style is rooted in your personal tastes and personality. People try to make personalities a trend which is why many look like they're wearing a costume instead of something that seems to flow effortlessly.
Finally someone that talk about this, I uninstalled tiktok because the anxiety these tiktoks made me feel. And what is the worst thing about this type of content that is in the internet (especially tiktok) is that they make you think that is useful information. Like if you watch this you are going to dress well and feel better about you wardrobe. That is pure shit. Best decision of my life uninstalling that shitty app.

Just because your feed shows everyone dressed to the max doesn’t mean they dress like that 24/7. I’d suggest not getting on TikTok as much, being exposed to so much content that’s pushed on you can lead to insecurity or depression.
One thing we viewers of fashion social media content often forget is that these people online do this fashion for a living. They are „content creators“ and therefore produce as much content as possible. We often fall into the trap of relatability, because they seem to live a normal life like we do. So we assume that we „normal“ people should buy these huge amount of clothes aswell. Social media really pretends that this is the standard and you have to achieve this.
I tried to be a social media influencer back in 2017 for a year with posting a picture every single day and its crazy what amount of clothes you need to have to even achieve this. I mostly bought fast fashion clothes and after a photoshoot I sent them back. 😵💫

On 2005 some harajuku trends and emo scene started on my City (Santiago de Chile) and lots of people lived in pretty bad neighborhoods. A way for them to do it was carrying the clothes, makeup, hairspray into their backpacks... Arriving to the center of the city and find a bathroom to change into and finishing their style. Then they would gather outside of the building where most popular stores were located. Just to chat about music, clothes, life... Uniforms and dresscodes at schools were really strict so hair extensions, make up and color hair spray were really popular, mini flat iron were required to achieve the messy hairstyle.
Safety first. Wear a hoodie and jeans on top and you can add the rest on the bus/train. Arriving you find a bathroom and do your hair and makeup. Women's bathroom have better mirrors and light, but men's bathroom have more toilet paper and soap. This kind of modus operandi isn't new, most people on harajuku did it this way since the 90's.
It may sound like a costume and not a genuine style but it's safer, contact some friends and go together to have some fun, eat ice cream, have a picnic, go window shopping, to the library or to take some pictures.

The oversaturation of fashion related content combined with the pressure to wear a different and interesting outfit every day has made ma want to put together a single perfect work/school outfit that I could just wear every day. 'minimalist' and 'wearable' are antonyms for me (except when it comes to jewelry), but the overall point you're making is sound. I love my impulse purchases, but only about half of them stick around after I make them, and only because they go well with the long-term-desire-turned-reality purchases. The more you lean on what people online tell you, the more likely you are to regret what you end up buying. Like, I do not live the kind of life where I want to put on a blazer, or a white shirt of any description; every time I pick them up to have a more 'complete' wardrobe, they sit in the closet.

So I got into the fashion thing because I live in Japan and the city I live in, esp the nightlife district, everybody looks good. Fashionable, even. I'm an American nerd who didn't know how to dress, so I started googling basic shit like 'how to dress as a man' and came across Frugal Aesthetics, Fly with Johnny Thai, Parker York Smith, Tim Dessaint. I didn't really understand the concept of having a style that 'fit' me (I still don't) so I tried to copy these people and for a time I did go out and buy some somewhat expensive stuff (a bomber jacket, some air force 1's, even though I've NEVER worn these kinds of shoes). Now, I wear these things all the time and I feel comfortable in them, and I'm thankful for all the tips/theory into fashion that I discovered thru these channels. It lets me dress more intentionally.
But even with that said, my closet was filled with Uniqlo stuff (since I live in Japan; very easy access, cheap too) that I didn't wear. I essentially donated down into a wardrobe that I wear every day. I think that these channels are a good place to stop if you're trying to figure out who you are in terms of how you want to dress, to learn ideas about color and silhouettes and .. fashion jargon. I never had an opinion on fashion, but now (because of these channels) I believe that fashion is a journey that is best done gradually. Sure, it's good to buy a statement piece or that really cool jacket, but I feel just buying massive amounts of clothing is just .. not the point of fashion. Unless you actually wear all that, then maybe..?

I defiantly think the next wave will be minimalism/eco fashion because these trends tend to cycle around. Just like makeup was all about being extra not long ago and now everything is going into the more "natural" look. Personally, after seeing almost 30years of these trends Ive learned to just wear what I like. Ive dressed alt (an umbrella term I use to just mean weird and using inspo from goth/punk/whatever else I like) since in hs and Im used to ppl either giving me looks or telling me they absolutely adore my style and theyd never have the guts. No matter what you wear there will be ppl that hate it and love it. Why waste the energy worrying about what other ppl think? I will use it as a filter as well because imo if someone cares that much about how another person dresses to try to call them out or shame them *cough*ppl who ride trends and shame ppl who dont*cough* then I probably wouldnt want to be their friend anyway

My only simple rule in life with fashion is don’t follow trends don’t pay mind to these tik tok videos and find ways to be different, ofc we need some kind of influence so what I do is mix 2 different styles in one.. whenever I get influenced by a outfit from a classic movie or online I do my best not to copy what I saw but better yet remake something similar. But yea basically doing the opposite of what others are doing and ofc picking fits that you genuinely love.
In high school, I dressed very trendy. The problem is, my clothes were so uncomfortable. I would wear heavy jewelry that would hurt my neck. I would wear skinny jeans that were really skinny and I would be sitting down funny. I would wear heeled boots when my school was five stories and I had to climb the stairs in them. Now as a 26 year old, I have a uniform. In the winter, I wear a sweater, a pair of jeans and boots with grip. In the summer, I wear a t shirt, jean shorts and Converse usually (or a dress and Converse). Sometimes I’ll mix it up and wear Birkenstocks. Having a uniform made dressing so much easier for me. I will wear necklaces and rings to mix things up but I no longer am making myself suffer to look cute.
Its simple, wear the stuff you like & are comfortable with. Take the money you'd spend on all these goofy trends and invest it into a hobby that keeps or appreciates in value.

Daniel Simmons is a good fashion influencer tho. He doesn't hide that he is clearly rich. He almost always says "X brand gave this piece to me, they are really good" instead of making you think you should or are capable of buying them like other ""fashion"" influencers, he just gives a simple opinion of the product.
Haven't used tiktok in over a month, not that I used it much to begin with but just now I've realized how much it has ruined my brain. Everything seems clearer now.

Also an aside on fast fashion for me, I used to shop a lot of fast fashion, but it’s only lead me to save multiple pieces for years. I still have a lot of pieces from when I was in high school lol. And being a punk and obsessed with diy made it so that I’m just interested in customizing things so I can enjoy them longer

for about a year now my wardrobe has been almost entirely centered around things that are practical for my work, culture, hobbies and lifestyle. since then I think my style has gotten a lot better and I feel better wearing wearing my clothes because my wardrobe is entirely genuine to who I am and how I live.

The need to look fashionable in order to validate opinions is so weird, and I think a focus on deconstructing that would foster a more confident fashion community in general. Your point about not being able to dress how I'd fully like because of safety really stuck with me as a girl, and the difference between fashion students/hobbyists who spend time in their closets and those who are chronically online is really obvious when it comes to these discussions.
Not everyone is in a position to be wearing their Diesel micro mini skirts or Marc Jacobs platforms, but you will be judged as though you are. That's in part why the "FIT students tell you what's fashionable" type videos don't gel with me, they manage to seem so out of touch with the real world.
in my opinion tiktok can expose you to aesthetically pleasing shit that u can vibe with and incorporate into ur "style" even if it's kinda explore page core. also on the insecurities in my experience shit helped me by giving me inspiration to work on myself which in turn made me more confident but i'm sure it varies by person. those are the only 2 things i kinda took exception to otherwise great vid

I genuinely love fashion, my mom got me into it by dressing me up in such cute clothes and it’s just part of me to dress up fashionably. But yeah another reason why People love fashion is because it’s their way of feeling approved, I experimented last year in school by dressing up “bad” and looking pretty “ugly”, people treated me poorly and always expect less from me. Now I’m back to my normal self and everyone is treating me differently, a lot of people would interact with me now, they also help me in class by just straight up giving away the answers. Also if I was assigned at a table where there’s a friend group, they always ask me questions as if I was part of the conversation and their friendship… It’s how our world works, gotta play it I guess..
I couldn't be on TT for more than a week. It just felt super unhealthy. Everyone acts weird on there too....I've also been looking for ways to avoid YT shorts as well.

Fashion has always been a form of self expression. The commodification of that authenticity is what’s “ruining” it. It used to be fun now it’s a competition.
I don't think the consumers of these TikToks where the outfit is just so out there is that these outfits aren't practical day to day.

I've recently discovered your channel and have been enjoying your videos quite a lot! I appreciate your refreshing point of view on fashion. I'm slowly getting into it myself and while I'm still figuring out my style and what I like, I can really resonate with how you dress and can imagine myself going into a similar direction down the line.
If I may give a bit of (hopefully) constructive feedback, I appreciate how your recent videos feel a bit more scripted and thought out. With older videos, while it seemed like you had a precise message, your wording could get redundant or repetitive at times; and sometimes that hindered how well the message was transmitted. I do appreciate how "conversational" the videos are though, and I do think there is an ideal middle ground between using a strict script, and an entirely unscripted discussion; and you seem to be getting closer and closer to that goldilocks zone.

I don't have tik tok anymore and well I don't really like watching fashion shorts or reels.
I prefer looking at runways because it was something that I always did when I was younger and still do lol.
I never really liked looking at trends, if I loved an outfit, I'd admire it and hope to get it in the future. In other words, I prefer clothes that fit my personality and are timeless becahse those things never changed.
But when I look at these people, I would think maybe that's just how they are. They want to alter their look based on how others dress to fit in I guess. 🤔

i the style that i am most comfortable in after i deleted tiktok. Overall i have seen myself stop comparing myself to others and being happier, 10/10 experience would recommend.
Also if you have a declining or bad body image: take 5 minutes out of your day every day to stand in front of your mirror in your underwear and just stare without any distractions, for a couple of days it might be weird but after that you start to see perfection in your imperfections. It worked for me and it might help you.
