reminds me of a german rapper who was asked in a interview who his favorite rapper was and he was like "me, every artist should give that answer..." and thats kinda the same vibe, even though it might sound arrogant, it should just be true...
Not so simple, though :) How does one get to building this world? What is that guiding star that tells you how and what belongs in that world when you don't have brilliant marketing team with ya? :)
nah thats quite vague and incorrect lol. Marketing is a system. Not something specific. It involves strategy. Paid media. Design. And sometimes even digital development.
I love this perspective. I love that idea of building a world around our art. I realized for myself I stopped sharing so much and developed a fear of looking like I had a huge ego and would be drawing too much attention to myself - but it’s actually not about us - it’s the creative work we pour into, the beauty we share, the joy we spread, the connection we make to others. What I was truly afraid of was what other people thought! This gives me so much to think about.
Same! I had the same feeling when I was trying to promote this series. I was constantly worried that I was being annoying or arrogant because I was posting so much about it, but it turns out that people were only more supportive. I keep trying to remind myself that big cooperations have no shame when they spam you with newsletters or ads. So why would people get annoyed if you're actually putting in the effort to make your marketing engaging and colorful.
I resonate with this so hard. "Selling myself" or creating promo after a project doesn't come easy to me. Sometimes I worry about it coming across as cringe, desperate, or even corny. So I end up just posting a few stories on ig and calling it a day. But after pouring our hearts and souls into a project, I think we owe it to ourselves to be our biggest support. Cause if WE don't care, then who will? We're doing a service to ourselves and to others by contributing our art. Thanks for sharing this Ryan! Really needed this perspective!
In that same interview, there was a line that really stuck with me. Tyler talked about how artists should post and promote their art. He mentioned discovering Rex Orange County after seeing one of his music videos and thinking it was amazing. Next thing you know, he flew Rex to Los Angeles to record a song together. The quote was: "You never know who is watching."
I can't lie this is the coolest shit ive watched in a minute. That moment you had watching tyler that day? I just had it watching you. Thank you bro, Thank You!!
Love this! A few weeks ago, I heard someone say "Let the art be the art, and the marketing be the marketing" and in that moment, my hubris, my ego dissolved. Promoting my work doesn't have to diminish it; it just helps more people find it.
The struggle is real, but when you start making art for other people (meaning you have a message and you think it’s valuable to others) it makes marketing easier and easier. Happy to see you back man!
I set a reminder to watch this every week so I can deeply ingrain this concept in my mind. And the part at 5:41 always brings tears to my eyes and a lump to my throat
"you have to be a fan of your own art" - this is such a great reminder for why I do what I do... because I fkn love it and I believe so deeply in the impact the stories I tell could have on other people. So I need to make sure more people hear them 🔥
Tyler is also my favorite artist. His career has been beyond amazing, he’s always had the vision and always believed in his art. This is a great message, this actually just makes a lightbulb go off in my head. “l ain't never had anxiety, l ain't never second-guessed myself. If I want it, I go get it I'm always on go mode, I just go I don't know what fear is”
This resonated with me way more than I expected. I was also, until recently, firmly in the "marketing is always inauthentic" camp but now realising that's not the case. Loved your take on it. A big breakthrough for me was realising that if you tell anyone about your work (either IRL or by posting online), then you already are doing marketing! The YT algorithm is marketing, your titles and thumbnails are all part of your marketing, whether you like it or not. Why not just do it in a way that feels intentional, in a way that's actually effective, and in a way that allows you to convey the emotions youre trying to convey through your art. Great work man.
best perspective on this subject I have seen, I for one hate the word “content” when referring to my art but changing that word to message made me feel better about promoting it because ultimately anything attached to our art is our message, that includes the marketing aspect of it
amazing perspective. something i've done the last few years- and to hear you talk about it really validates my approach. be authentic, and the rest is easy.
I hate that feeling of trying to force my material on people, I really find it hard to enjoy trying to promise people something that may not be what they are looking for.
Brother I absolutely LOVED the format of this video. Artsy af but straight to the point (not ranty) and inspiring. Great job. Thank you for uploading this.

Such an incredible video as always. I highly relate to this one, as a creator I often feel like my posts MUST perform well and that social media is a shelf to show that I can get that high performance. This has completely changed my prospective, I think it’s time to take a little more pride in every post, after all a bigger number is far less gratifying than the euphoria you get when what you work hard on is well received. Thanks for this!
writing this with tears in my eyes, I'm a huge fan of Tyler and how you managed to include those notes to the video was something exceptional, as an artist I relate so much with this video. one of the best videos I've watched this 2024
This speaks to me so loud in my heart that I almost cried. Magnificent production, brilliant idea, and most importantly, utmost AUTHENTICITY. Hands down, one of the best artistic discovery I've seen on TH-cam. Looking forward for your upcoming work from now on.
Great start to the series! I really like how you told the story of how you came to these realizations about marketing. It makes it feel like you are learning these lessons that you picked up from around you with the viewers, and you're sharing your experiences rather than telling others how they should carry themselves. Again, great editing, and I loved the detail of showing the poster you were painting at the start of the video, and then showing it up on the wall later on. Nice touch!
Yarrr! This didn't feel like a 6 min video because it was so pack with insights, and beautiful storytelling and shots. The video itself is demonstrating this idea of selling your art, and that it can be AUTHENTIC. This is what I need to hear right now. Great work! New sub :)
This was a really good reminder to watch. I've been struggeling a lot with marketing myself, because just as you, I always feel like a sellout doing it. But I guess it's really important to just find a way that feels genuine to you. Thank you for this wonderful video 🙏
Absolutely! It felt so unnatural to me when I started. Even promoting this series felt a little wrong haha. It got to the point where I had to close my eyes when I uploaded my instagram stories, but it turns out that people are totally chill with it and even more supportive than if you hadn't promoted it (as long as it's authentic haha). Sometimes people just need a reminder to watch your stuff. They might have missed it the first time around. A reminder is not annoying at all (think about all the cooperations that spam your inboxes haha).
Truly amazing video, your message and perspective was so helpful. I think artists like us are kind of obsessed with being authentic, we dont wanna copy or just do whatever is trending we want a challenge and to be original, but your right we dont have to sacrifice our souls to do that! we just gotta be proud and showcase what deserves to be shared with the world !
this resonates with me sooo much. i used to be so hype about my projects, but over time i kinda fell into that feeling of just uploading and forgetting about it... and over time i became less enthusiastic about creating. making promos and things to advertise the art and being hype WITH people was such a blast and i really wanna start doing that again.
Alright alright alright you just comming inside the shot at 0:37 an talking into the mic, damn this was unexpected for me! the way you zoomed out and than just casually walking into the shot this was very uniqe, AWESOME. I mean erveryone can walk in an such but the way you made that transistion I have not seen anyone doing it this smooth!!
this is so important to me right now.. i just did the exact thing tyler was talking about with a nearly silent drop of an album im incredibly proud of that took months of my life and your words are inspiring me to scream about it from the rooftops. im over being a "cool guy". great short-film here, man!
I've been painting for years and only recently realized that: if you believe your work has value for people and fills a need then marketing is the way to allow people to find it and obtain that value. The view of marketing as 'selling out' comes from being flooded with ads for products that AREN'T providing that value, but if you believe in what you create and you believe your customers can benefit from it, then you can market with confidence.
Damn. This hit my soul as I'm about to release my first album which took me two years and is a story of self-love. Thank you for landing in my recommendations at this moment. I appreciate you.
Ohhhkay, this makes so much sense!! I've always felt like "promoting" is inauthentic but it isn't when you do it with the right intention or do it your way. so marketing can be an art too! Damnnnn. Beautiful vid💗
This video unlocks many things in my head. Seeing the marketing as a new opportunity to create content around the primary content is an amazing way of seeing things ! Very cool video Ryan, I gave it my best genuine like for a long time!
Love this video! Marketing itself is an artform, and good marketing is art, and it allows you to finance your art. It's a win/win when done right, too many low effort scammy marketers give it a bad rep, but just don't be like them!
needed this perspective. I feel like the idea was always in my head, especially after watching that same tyler interview; but you broke it down in a way where it clicked instantly. I appreciate your work bro, thank you.
This Monday I'm going to launch my "tv show" that I made with my friends, and this video made me think about what i can do to promote my things, I had some ideas. Now what Tyler said, it doesn't want to leave my head, and I'm glad it doesn't.
Thank you for sharing this! I'm also trying to be as authentic as possible with my own channel and have been struggling with the concept of 'marketing' because the concept genuinely feels icky and soulless. But when you put it that way, about building a world around your art, it offers a new perspective. Much appreciated 👍🏾
Man I needed this video, that Tyler clip also resonated with me a while back, but I've always hated the idea of following trends or appeasing the algorithm. Thanks to this video marketing doesn't feel as soul sucking, keep it up man
i know we talked about this a lot in person but so glad i have a video now to go back to and remind myself! love you man and so proud that you got this out AND marketed it ;)
Such a good video! I’m a filmmaker myself and can get so frustrated being pulled between honing my craft while also creating a world/marketing those projects all by myself but I think you/Tyler are totally right in seeing it as an extension of the work. It’s so essential and if you do it right, just as fun and exciting as the rest of the process.
Love the webcam idea -> love how you put marketing in newspaper words and the smooth animation - love the shot selection on close ups with painting and also another version of you coming into frame So dope
this is good. love the way you explained everything. you know what’s crazy, i’m a marketing manager for a aerodynamic startup company, i’ve been doing marketing for 6 years and i have my own side hustle. i know how to market so well for the company i work for but when i released a t-shirt for my brand i didn’t market it well, ironically. i just went out and posted it because i felt that if i didnt, i wouldn’t have released it. i failed to market for my own brand and have learned from that. i felt that if i promoted it too much, it would have came off as too salesly or too pushy, or not “me” or true to my brand. im going to release some poster designs in the coming weeks and couldn’t have found this video at the right time. thank you.
You did a really good job on this video, aesthetics, edit, audio mix, transitions, shot composition, animations. They were executed so well that everything felt smooth and well connected. Enjoying the double Ryans as well as action + narrative are more engaging than narrative alone. Skill and respect.
Perfect, you showed the before, the after, the process, and the feeling. Incredible work. You kept it short and balanced saying everything you needed too without talking too much. I’m inspired by your video, thank you for sharing.
Dope video. Thank you for sharing. Creating soul-sell-y content on social media feels so terrible and inauthentic but nowadays it feels like everyone online is telling you it's the only way to grow-- Your perspective really affirms my love for worldbuilding without necessitating viral-trend-chasing. Ur a beast
.honestly i saw this interview a while back but the way you put it into perspective really makes me rethink the way I present my own work this video was very helpful, it really lit a spark
Marketing is the hardest part about being an artist. But doing it your way, is the best way. I got inspired by Max kolo with his graphic design schemes in nyc. Marketing then became making little art pieces in doodle and sticker form and spreading them around my town. Just get yourself out there in your own way and people will see you. Great video as always Ryan!
See how bro said "40 minute mark when Tyler said...", with timer counting up, in the corner, but coincidentally when it hits the 40 second mark he drops the quote. ( 0:57 ) Interesting detail.
Well done. I have been a creator that thinks other people will figure out my stuff is good. "My art will speak for itself" BUT TOO MANY INFERIOR PRODUCTS are winning. Trailers, Posters, etc-all great ideas for people who aren't used to "tooting their own horn".
Amazing vid, as a fellow filmmaker in the making I really enjoyed seeing the way you made a story out of this vid and were honest about your struggles.
Great video and pov of marketing. I think looking at marketing from your pov will turn down the overthinking and self doubt. Plus this marketing really feels authentic. I’m with you on accepting that some marketing tactics aren’t for you and that’s okay.
Not only was this video concise, engaging and thoroughly enjoyable it honestly opened my eyes to an issue I've been not wanting to address for awhile. Marketing and Promotion has always felt cringe and to self centred but I've realised the importance of Loving the art that you put out to the extent that you'd want to share it with everybody because you put to much effort to let what you have built not shine, it you're not your biggest fan than is your art even worth being seen by others? Well you got a new subscriber cause this video was amazing.
This video itself is a work of art (we all know that) and a great inspiration. I've been struggling with social media because a while ago I accepted that nowadays you can't be an artist without social media and I've never been a social media guy, I've never even downloaded TikTok once, but I always feel the pressure that I should and I'm stupid for not making content there already, but you're absolutely right, if it doesn't resonate with me, why do it and sell my soul, and my art, I will continue looking for my path where I believe it is right for me and not where everyone says it is the right path, I'm so passionate about what I do that sometimes I cry about it, I just need to find a way to share that passion with the rest of the world.
Gratitude for that and I had to give a sub because all the thoughts I have been having about marketing myself just all got confirmed from watching your video.
I love the concept of world- building, I feel like one of the things I'm most passionate about is developing a style that feels like me and it just so happens that that's good marketing. Phenomenal vid Ryan!❤
Bro I remember chatting with you about this conversation and that exact tyler clip. The converse interviews are honestly gems everyone should watch! Love this so hyped for the rest of the series!
great video man. for me as a videographer my problem is to sell the people that they'd benefit from my work (which is the marketing of your video 😅). I'm gonna learn it but it's pretty hard rn
i hope this pops up for everyone that watches that interview because the prospective it has given me is wayyyy too good, and it revitalized that feeing in my heart so thank you!
This one hits home for me. I used to think that all the effort that went into making the art was good enough, but there’s an art in sharing the art. Wonderful video. Thank you for sharing 💙
Wow this was actually a great perspective about marketing. I have some video content I spent months on to only just posted a story of it. But now I'm thinking of revisiting some to edit again.
As I’m just starting to become a music artist I rly do believe in the idea of building your own world and giving life to the art that I create. A little bit of me wants stories like Tyler to the things I make, so I can look back and say this is me. Maybe I said this corny but this vid opened me up to trying to be not just authentic but also be as “me” as possible. I hope I have 1k or even 10k in the next year of people who believe in this vision and world that I’m starting to see. I believe in my work🙏🏾🙏🏾
When i first saw your video that blew up, i was honestly expecting videos like that moving forward. I was not expecting anything special or like thought provoking if you know what i mean. But after looking at your channel month after month, hoping another video blows up for you, i realised that you instead went in a completely new direction. At first you posted videos that made me aware that im watching youtube, and that how all of this works sucks for you. Then you just start making like great videos that i enjoy watching, and you dont care if you dont get popularity. Its instead a small good community, around these videos that i enjoy watching. Watching your videos is like watching a friend trying to make good videos, and even though no one cares i care because i care about the friend and the videos are actually good. Anyways, this was a very scuffed comment.. i just wanted to get my thoughts out, i hope you understood it. Thank you for all these videos.
Love this Ryan! I remember seeing that and I couldn't agree more. It took me a while to understand what it meant to market too. The argument you're making here unlocks even more for me. Thanks for putting this video together!
This. Thank you for sharing your process, change of perspective and resolution. Beautifully made. Felt like I was watching a mini movie. Beautifully made❤
I really love this. I can see your authenticity in this video, the stuff that makes you unique and i really think that people will make it in life with whatever they are doing by being themselves 100%. Thank you for this 🙏
Great video Ryan-- completely agree; Marketing can be looked at as a hurdle that I'd rather not do. I'd rather people just see what I make and like it. But the truth of the matter is that for people to find and connect with what you make, you have to create and build an authentic connection with them, and so true inventive marketing is a necessary part of that exchange in creating long time fans and supporters.
Thank you for the kind words Jack! Yeah especially in the times we live in, the world moves so quickly. People might have just missed what you made if you upload about it once. It's a bummer, but if marketing is just a world building exercise for you then it can actually enhance the work! idk just my thoughts.
@@RyanNgFilms Absolutely, and Tyler is one of the best examples of someone who markets without losing authenticity. I've been making an animated feature for a while and have definitely been inspired by your stuff. Would love to connect sometime -- building a filmmaker network is crazy important to success and I love what you're doing! I posted a video last month that I think is stylistically somewhat similar to one of yours. Anyways lmk if that might be something you'd be interested in; always trying to meet new awesome filmmakers :D
I clicked on this video waiting for footage from my gopro to download, and it pulled me in so well I couldn't click off. The storytelling in this video is much more prominent than the message itself and that says a lot about what you're capable of. Whatever your film is, I want to watch it.
Rn im not really inspired, but if i had to define how your video has made me feel id do it saying id give it a super like if it existed. Really cool and interesting perspective, Ryan!
"You have to be a fan of your own stuff" best takeaway quote from this video!
reminds me of a german rapper who was asked in a interview who his favorite rapper was and he was like "me, every artist should give that answer..." and thats kinda the same vibe, even though it might sound arrogant, it should just be true...
Ou yeah
gotta leave a comment for that
I remember Burnie from Rooster Teeth saying something like that on the Drunk Tank (now Rooster Teeth Podcast)!! 🐓
best!
100%
Marketing is simply finding a theme around the art that you’re making so that you can build a world that your art lives in.

a line from an Isaiah Rashad song comes to mind with your comment: “who’s gonna sing your song if you don’t play it”

this is so important to me right now.. i just did the exact thing tyler was talking about with a nearly silent drop of an album im incredibly proud of that took months of my life and your words are inspiring me to scream about it from the rooftops. im over being a "cool guy". great short-film here, man!
Loved the fact that Tyler's song "Can I get a kiss" sound track was playing in the background.... That was genius
Haha thank you man!
it’s called see you again
“Be as authentic as possible!” I LOVED THIS VIDEO!!!!!
man is this just a tyler glaze video in disguise as a video essay
Thank you brother!
Bro you have no idea how much I needed this today. Thank you! This was wonderful, powerful, and true.
This was incredible. Tyler's words were spot on but the points you were able to share from your own perspective are incredibly helpful
Thanks to this video marketing doesn't feel as soul sucking, keep it up man
i know we talked about this a lot in person but so glad i have a video now to go back to and remind myself! love you man and so proud that you got this out AND marketed it ;)
Dude thank you so much man, this means a lot ❤❤❤So much love
Such a good video! I’m a filmmaker myself and can get so frustrated being pulled between honing my craft while also creating a world/marketing those projects all by myself but I think you/Tyler are totally right in seeing it as an extension of the work. It’s so essential and if you do it right, just as fun and exciting as the rest of the process.
Thank you for the kind words Samuel!! I'm so glad you were able to get something out of this ❤
Love the webcam idea -> love how you put marketing in newspaper words and the smooth animation - love the shot selection on close ups with painting and also another version of you coming into frame
So dope
your editing is so amazing man, its something some people just skip pass it but damn even too the sound effects, love to see it.
I love this. Putting effort, love, and time into my art. Creating a new world within a world.
this is good. love the way you explained everything.
you know what’s crazy, i’m a marketing manager for a aerodynamic startup company, i’ve been doing marketing for 6 years and i have my own side hustle.
i know how to market so well for the company i work for but when i released a t-shirt for my brand i didn’t market it well, ironically. i just went out and posted it because i felt that if i didnt, i wouldn’t have released it. i failed to market for my own brand and have learned from that.
i felt that if i promoted it too much, it would have came off as too salesly or too pushy, or not “me” or true to my brand. im going to release some poster designs in the coming weeks and couldn’t have found this video at the right time. thank you.
I love the way you structure your films! Stunning shots AND such useful information. I am so excited about this series!
Thank you so much Jordan!!!
You did a really good job on this video, aesthetics, edit, audio mix, transitions, shot composition, animations. They were executed so well that everything felt smooth and well connected. Enjoying the double Ryans as well as action + narrative are more engaging than narrative alone. Skill and respect.
Thank you so much man! Haha yea I'm playing around with a new camera and wanted to try some new editing work. Thank you for pointing that stuff out!
@@RyanNgFilms Anytime man keep this going, it's incredible. Side note, the texture on paint looks incredible on camera O_O.
Perfect, you showed the before, the after, the process, and the feeling. Incredible work. You kept it short and balanced saying everything you needed too without talking too much. I’m inspired by your video, thank you for sharing.
this is onee of the most well edited videos ive seen and the message behind it is amazing w vid
Thank you so much!
I'm so glad! Thank you for taking the time out of your day to watch this :D
Thank you for the thoughtful comment man! Just checked out Max's stuff, so beautiful.
“marketing is for the artist, just as much as it is for the audience” dude incredible video!
"You have to be a fan of your own stuff"
Thank you, Tyler. 💜
Great video and pov of marketing. I think looking at marketing from your pov will turn down the overthinking and self doubt. Plus this marketing really feels authentic. I’m with you on accepting that some marketing tactics aren’t for you and that’s okay.
Thank you man!
Bro this video is GOLD!!
The story, the editing, the wisdom!!
GOOOOLD!!!
Even though this was a short one of yours i thought it was my favorite you've made, maybe because i love tyler so much but good shit man
Awe thank you so much!
@@RyanNgFilms :)
Wow, thank you so much Jonathan!
@@RyanNgFilms no problem and gratitude for putting out the content.
I was thinking of this. I found ppl like you. I'm happy we're not alone
great video man. for me as a videographer my problem is to sell the people that they'd benefit from my work (which is the marketing of your video 😅).
It's ok, you're with me is such a good song. What a throwback. Good vid 🤙
Wow this was actually a great perspective about marketing. I have some video content I spent months on to only just posted a story of it. But now I'm thinking of revisiting some to edit again.
Much love Jacky, so glad this helped!
I believe in my work🙏🏾🙏🏾
Wishing you the best of luck on your creative journey!!!
Wow, thank you for this! That really mans a lot, and really needed to hear this. Thank you so much for sticking around all those years!!!
0:50 yo that’s me on the right in the green shirt with glasses what’s up 🥹
Love this Ryan! I remember seeing that and I couldn't agree more. It took me a while to understand what it meant to market too. The argument you're making here unlocks even more for me. Thanks for putting this video together!
So glad this helped in some way Andrew!
This. Thank you for sharing your process, change of perspective and resolution. Beautifully made. Felt like I was watching a mini movie. Beautifully made❤
this seriously changed something in me man, thank you so much and bless you.
Love that you had this breakthrough! Marketing can be just as creatively fulfilling as filmmaking. Great video as always!! 💛🙌
Thanks guys!!! Lots of love ❤❤❤
Tyler has been in my head for the last 3 years tellin me to push my craft so thank you for putting this video out.
what a perfect way to look at marketing. So excited for this series!!!!!!!
By the time this video finished it had felt like only a minute had passed. Really enjoyed this and genuinely learned something important
Thank you so much Pat!!!
I always say, it’s about 50% making the thing, and 50% marketing the thing. Beautiful video by the way Ryan.
I just watched all your videos. Glad I found you. So refreshing.
Much love Omar! Thank you for watching man, it means more than you think.
