i like the video but i do not agree on the very premise that fashion or personal fashion should be primarily driven by the idealistic philosophy of individualism. Maybe its bc we live in a hyper-capitalist world where everyone is separated, isolated, and lonely so to speak, i think theres a lot of credence in discovering yourself within others, a sense of communal discovery and interaction. Fashion to me is a social act as well as personal, to express yourself and to relate to others through an art form and thus in this sense it would be a collective experience rather than a purely individually driven interest. i think the obsession to need to be "unique", "individualistic", "main character" is a social manifestation of the economic divide of capitalism, where you want to divide up people into categories but you must remain as solely on top of others. In this sort of "market" you are an entrepreneur, but social interactions cannot work like markets and thus it pervades a sense of implicit narcissism. this doesnt make anyone evil, this is just how capitalism has infested our social lives. Even the very concepts of "fads/trends/seasons/etc" they all mean to replicate the social need and desire for a sense of community but through a capitalist and isolated lens. You too can be apart of this community/clique/subculture if you buy into it and promote these companies/brands/celebs, which essentially privatizes human socialization. This doesn't even have to be fashion related but there's a large reason why a lot of people identify with celebrities/brands/companies and expect their consumptive habits to have a moral imperative and are thus an extension of their identity. People are disconnected from the human experience and don't have anything tangible to grasp and are thus looking for themselves within the things they consume. Im sure you'll make a video on the death of the subculture and how commodity fashion has played a part in it. I love your prior video about commodity fetishism and how value and consumer habits seem to define us as people within a capitalist world, and I agree with your conclusion that the only way to truly come to terms with your own identity is to become disaffected by capitalist advertising and consumption. You really hit the nail on the head without scaring anyone away with academic language which i really appreciate.
At my high school there are so many kids that dress with trends, and then hate on them when those same trends fall off. All of them try to be so “different” and I just can’t understand that mindset, they all act like the protagonist which just ends up making them all the same

I’ve found that the best way to actually be unique is to put in the work and make your own clothing. I started sewing a year or two ago and I’ve made a few really good pieces that are 100% unique since they were made by hand. Resorting to a brand to provide a sense of self can work sometimes, but the only person that can really capture the essence of who you are is you.

The biggest challenges for me was time constraints since I’m a college student, and also access to the right equipment and materials. I got lucky since I found an old 90s sewing machine on the side of the road a few summers ago, so I was able to just use that for my escapades. The old ones are practically indestructible and are good for starting out since they’re so simple. Plus they’re cheap on eBay, the one I currently use, a Brother VX-808, is like $40. If you aren’t feeling that tho, and want something super budget, then go to Walmart and grab a t-shirt, embroidery floss, embroidery needles, embroidery hoop, and a fabric marker, overall $15ish. But if you want to go the sewing machine route, go thrifting and find two garments that complement each other, and combine them. If you already have an idea, then go to a Joann’s and wander around (and I mean wander, I’ll be in that place for 2 hours and still not see everything) to find fabric. The Joann’s trips do get expensive so have a list to stick to. Hope that helps ha.

I think I truly stopped caring about the definition of "style" when I realised how just the day to day person looks. Living in Scotland it's either older folks that wear coats, chinos and knitwear which never looks bad and if you look closer it's nice to see that they themselves have picked them out too just look good, not different. There are swarms of nike wear people and whatever but as soon as there is even just something of another style I can appreciate it.

As humans, we can never find a style and not follow trends, many people get into fashion to appease a void that is inside or around them. Even if you break away from trends you'll find a way to integrate something trendy into "your style" and follow what's everyone's doing in a roundabout way. The best advice one can give here is to be more selective, but it is all relative.
Everything is kinda already a trend. so you're right there really is no breakaway but being able to truly question the who what where when and why you want to engage and purchase a piece is important. what do you take away from it, who are you wearing it for, where would you wear it, why this specific piece. Only then i think you can make the most out of fashion.

Exactly. Style i the exxageration of the basics and that goes for everything. Your style is how you personally wear what happens to be trendy in whatever subgenre of clothing you identify with.
I don’t think being different should be the goal, but instead wearing what makes you feel the most like yourself regardless of the popularity of that style. If you feel your best in a white T and some panda Dunks, rock that with confidence, it shouldn’t matter that it’s seen as basic if that’s what you genuinely like.
Best thing I learned about creativity at film school was that nothing is original. If you look at any art piece, film, song, or outfit, it’s made up of lot’s of little inspirations stitched together to make something new. Anyone who thinks they’re completely unique needs a reality check

I will reiterate, as I have in a previous comment on one of your videos, but literally removing social media so that I'm not plugged into the trends helped me so much with relaxing about my style choices. As long as it feels good, and I feel confident and most myself in it, that's all that matters. I want to wear what excites me! And find out what works on me... Not what other people are being told to wear to be unique and 'stand out from the crowd'. Your sentiment about transcending the need to be different by accepting we're all pretty much the same is such a reality pill. Shifting my mindset to that made me more curious about the people around me's style choices. It's opened up fashion so much more and it no longer feels like a competition.

My interpretation would be, that we won't ever find who we truly are. Because your personality isn't defined. It's an always changing thing, wich get's influenced by your day to day life. I've talked about this with my grandfather. I asked him how he was still so happy, even though he just got hit by a car. And he told me, that he wants to change. Not because he's a bad person. But because he feels there's still some potential in him, that he hasn't used. So in his thinking, there is no truth to discover. It's the journey of life that's interesting. And a personality constantly develops, so we should wear what we want to, in that exact moment. That's the most authentic thing we can put on.

ive felt this away a lot recently, maybe not in fashion but with music and video games. i have the feeling of wanting to be an individual but when i meet someone similar to me its kinda easier to meme them before they do it to me. this sucks because its driven by insecurity and is a missed opportunity to make a genuine connection with a like minded person and even more so miss a chance to build a community. all for what, bragging rights??? to myself??? theres no one to share it with! rip
My whole life i have been an oddity and a spectacle just by my singular act of continuing to live and exist every day. I strived to fit in and be unnoticed and it never works, when i see people going out of their way to stand out and be a visual spectacle, it may be my trauma speaking, but it makes me feel like they don't like themselves as they are very much. I am glad that they can atleast find some semblance of happiness in what they do and wear.
I think one of the most liberating moment in my style development was realizing that I’m not unique and I do not need to be unique. Like, yeah I like “basic” things. But so what? I genuinely like my style and it makes me happy. I don’t need to put on a show to be “different” or buy certain things to be popular, I can just be me and stay content with what I like

i usually don’t follow many trends myself but one thing that i do like about trends is that sometimes they can help lead to finding your individualistic style, i used to dress the way others would deem cool and after trying it i knew for sure that it wasn’t me. i do however think it’s not good to constantly trend hop and completely change styles every few months. i personally like the idea of fashion being individualistically driven the best.
I am 5 minutes into the video and I agree with your points. What I’ve learned is that it boils down to INTENTION. If your INTENTION is to stand out and be as different as you can from everyone, then you will get lost in the sauce and your hyper individualistic style will come off as unauthentic. If your INTENTION is to genuinely find your own sense of style and to express that style for your own contentment, then you’ll find yourself creating an image that is authentic and enjoyable.

On the surface, fashion is about individuality, the need to express oneself; but beyond that its about needing to express yourself in order to be noticed, included and ultimately, to belong. When punk was emerging as a style, most people reacted with scorn, but the benefit of expressing oneself as a punk was to find belonging with others who shared a similar outlook and approach to life. Without stylistic conventions as a shorthand for communication, we are lost, and in much the same way, we are lost if we try to find our own style by approaching an asymptote we deem to be the uniqueness of our selves. Basically, style is just as much about finding yourself as it is about finding others.
As a small kid, I went to a summer camp and I convinced the group of kids in my cabin to do interpretive dance to Bohemian Rhapsody. We got booed off stage by 120 people ever since I have not cared about fashion because I am the inverse I dress to blend in because I don’t wanna stand out anymore. I don’t want to be seen I want to disappear because ever since I’ve had a huge social phobia so you’re probably right someone did hurt these people but sometimes it goes in the opposite direction sometimes you wanna peacock sometimes you wanna bury yourself in the sand

I wear very plain clothing. Usually baggy clothes is what I wear. I find myself thrifting most of my pieces and having friends that are constantly chasing trends, literally obsessing over brands and drop dates is insane to me. At that point, its not even a hobby anymore.

I just dress the way I like and get excited when I see other people doing the same. That's enough for me. Also, the fashion world (anyone who cares about fashion and clothing, or even self expression) is insanely small compared to everything else. There's going to be other people who enjoy the same things you do, but you still belong to a niche group of people enjoying the same thing.

For me my Ramones will always be my number one.. the canvas black and white silhouette they go with everything, they’re comfortable. Next are my converse. I have a couple pairs of nice jeans.. but love a cropped pair of Levi’s, a denim jacket and a vintage tee.. that’s just what I feel most comfortable in.. and I think that’s key.. whatever makes you look in the mirror and go “ok I’m down to go outside in this” 😂 In my opinion it’s not the clothes that make you.. it’s about you being your most authentic self in them.. love these videos! Constant idea I have: death in general, I’m not original (times bags been going on too long for it to be possible),the power of simplicity/vagueness, and the if the reason of life is specific or vague in its entirety
ive thought about this many times. ive never had the problem of keeping of with trends. but I did have the problem of trying to be different. tbh the answer for me is just to shop for what I like. and what I think looks nice. i purposely avoid most fashion influencers on tiktok, insta etc. (note: I do like to look at different fashion shows or pictures and pick out what I might want to try. So my style is influenced consciously and unconsciously by media)
I think more people should dress for themselves instead of dressing for strangers and social media trends. You don't need other people to like what you're wearing, you don't need their validation. You can wear whatever you want and just enjoy it because you like it.

I will reiterate, as I have in a previous comment on one of your videos, but literally removing social media so that I'm not plugged into the trends helped me so much with relaxing about my style choices. As long as it feels good, and I feel confident and most myself in it, that's all that matters. I want to wear what excites me! And find out what works on me... Not what other people are being told to wear to be unique and 'stand out from the crowd'. Your sentiment about transcending the need to be different by accepting we're all pretty much the same is such a reality pill. Shifting my mindset to that made me more curious about the people around me's style choices. It's opened up fashion so much more and it no longer feels like a competition.

Growing up, and through college, I never fell into trends. I never bought a pair of Nikes or Jordan’s, I just got what I liked or what my mom bought. Last year, I bought over 30 pairs of shoes. Wasn’t until recently I realized that I was doing it for that little serotonin boost. I’m going back to vans, Walmart jeans and white tees

I think wardrobe should represent both who you are and what do you want others to see. Like if you enjoy fantasy setting (maybe looks of elves or vampires) you may emplefy medieval elements, and, at the same time, if you are shy and not an attention sicker you may tone down things. Add more functionality, fluffiness or whatever, copy someone's style or adapt it with the thing you need or detach ones you dislike. Don't try being unique without being your true self

My interpretation would be, that we won't ever find who we truly are. Because your personality isn't defined. It's an always changing thing, wich get's influenced by your day to day life.
I've talked about this with my grandfather. I asked him how he was still so happy, even though he just got hit by a car. And he told me, that he wants to change. Not because he's a bad person. But because he feels there's still some potential in him, that he hasn't used.
So in his thinking, there is no truth to discover. It's the journey of life that's interesting. And a personality constantly develops, so we should wear what we want to, in that exact moment. That's the most authentic thing we can put on.

My whole life i have been an oddity and a spectacle just by my singular act of continuing to live and exist every day. I strived to fit in and be unnoticed and it never works, when i see people going out of their way to stand out and be a visual spectacle, it may be my trauma speaking, but it makes me feel like they don't like themselves as they are very much. I am glad that they can atleast find some semblance of happiness in what they do and wear.
I think one of the most liberating moment in my style development was realizing that I’m not unique and I do not need to be unique.
Like, yeah I like “basic” things. But so what? I genuinely like my style and it makes me happy. I don’t need to put on a show to be “different” or buy certain things to be popular, I can just be me and stay content with what I like

I've always been into fashion, and I tend to just dress however I want. I'm not too into chasing trends, though my style does sometimes overlap with trends. I've always loved the maximalist style. Lots of jewelry, tattoos, different colors, etc.

i usually don’t follow many trends myself but one thing that i do like about trends is that sometimes they can help lead to finding your individualistic style, i used to dress the way others would deem cool and after trying it i knew for sure that it wasn’t me. i do however think it’s not good to constantly trend hop and completely change styles every few months. i personally like the idea of fashion being individualistically driven the best.

What I’ve learned is that it boils down to INTENTION.
If your INTENTION is to stand out and be as different as you can from everyone, then you will get lost in the sauce and your hyper individualistic style will come off as unauthentic.
If your INTENTION is to genuinely find your own sense of style and to express that style for your own contentment, then you’ll find yourself creating an image that is authentic and enjoyable.

I wear very plain clothing. Usually baggy clothes is what I wear. I find myself thrifting most of my pieces and having friends that are constantly chasing trends, literally obsessing over brands and drop dates is insane to me. At that point, its not even a hobby anymore.

For me my Ramones will always be my number one.. the canvas black and white silhouette they go with everything, they’re comfortable. Next are my converse. I have a couple pairs of nice jeans.. but love a cropped pair of Levi’s, a denim jacket and a vintage tee.. that’s just what I feel most comfortable in.. and I think that’s key.. whatever makes you look in the mirror and go “ok I’m down to go outside in this” 😂 In my opinion it’s not the clothes that make you.. it’s about you being your most authentic self in them.. love these videos! I love fashion and I think there’s a way to make it work in your favor.. I love catching a look at somone on the street and think “ I have no idea what they’re wearing but I like it” rather than “that person is wearing head to toe Rick” “or hype” I like when you can’t tell.. ive thought about this many times. ive never had the problem of keeping of with trends. but I did have the problem of trying to be different.
tbh the answer for me is just to shop for what I like. and what I think looks nice. i purposely avoid most fashion influencers on tiktok, insta etc.
(note: I do like to look at different fashion shows or pictures and pick out what I might want to try. So my style is influenced consciously and unconsciously by media)

I think more people should dress for themselves instead of dressing for strangers and social media trends. You don't need other people to like what you're wearing, you don't need their validation. You can wear whatever you want and just enjoy it because you like it.
