Because of content creators like you I started experimenting wearing what is in now that fits my own personal taste. I am starting to be in to Jordans and oversized Cargoes now and wear it with confidence in my office where everyone wears a more conservative smart casual looks

treating myself as a build your own character everyday gives dressing much more ease on my mind body and soul which may just be a product of neurodivergence but i digress, cuz yeah i may not have the current financials to purchase margiela or miu miu (just for example) but having the eye and interest in runway fashion allows me to emulate those styles on my body, which in turn stimulates my creativity and mood when hunting for similar silhouettes and styles in thrift stores/ vintage second hand/ online etc. the hunt makes for the final product i showcase more enjoyable for me. i guess i could characterize my style on the relatable end because of it’s ease and accessibility for my everyday, but in a way that is what puts me in the middle because that simplicity is what i’d characterize as my personal style? it is an interesting conversation to be had with how saturated fashion content is now, especially when talking about influencer spaces. love your vids so much you give great nuance and commentary for fashion as it stands in the 21st century, opening the door to question what we’re constantly seeing in these spaces

As a person firmly hovering around the personal style section, I’ve noticed that for all the lack of Internet Appreciation there is, I instead get frequent compliments irl. Even if validation is your goal (which tbh you should try and work on self-assurance in that case) it’s not worth trying too much to cater to the algorithm ... The lack of personal style on the internet is very interesting to me, yet there are still some with very curated style choices that always nice to see. Its all about building outfits for the algorithm now a days.
Ive been all over the place with style (schoolgirl, crust punk, androgynous, trashy....) and I feel like trauma caused me to want look really normal instead of embracing anything remotely personal.
The fact that people want to copy fits 1to1 seems somewhat odd to me, because I enjoy clothing pieces the most if chances are low that other people own the same thing. But after the 2000s reboots through Tiktok and shows I feel like most are making it look like I'm following the current trend. So it's definitely interesting to see younger generations going through past trends so quickly trying to find what suits them.
The idea of fashion as a commodity and status symbol has been around for centuries. The intricacy and size of lace in the 18th century, the size and condition of ruffs in the 16/17th centuries, the colors and textiles used in a garment, these all correlated to the wealth of an individual and were status symbols amongst the aristocracy. Of course with the advent of social media, this idea has taken different forms and has waxed and waned in prominence over the years, but the principle has been a common thread throughout the history of fashion.
6:52 I feel that the reason why personal style is so similar to Sisyphus. Like you mentioned earlier, most fashion social media accounts being more of an entertainment kind of thing rather than a form of self expression. That of which makes it hard to find the reason as to why someone will want to gravitate towards a certain style. I feel that for those who are in the line of personal style all have the common attribute of having a reasoning as to why they chose a certain piece or style. And I feel that could be a possible stage of the fashion evolution that could maybe be talked about. To further elaborate, reasonings such as big thighs. The fact is that most people are not seasoned fashion stylists, that have the luxury of experience and skill to make compelling outfits, but in fact are people that are in the process of learning the fundamentals. Once this group of people evolves past this point, they will have the possibility of tinkering and experimenting with self expression, but there will always be a large majority who will be in the learning group. Besides many people's passion does not lie fully in fashion, and understanding the fundamentals of what looks good will be enough for them, and thats ok.

Jung and his theories on mass consciousness and the processes of individualization inspired me a lot. Mainstream = mass consciousness, but what feels like "me". And how the separation arises - practically throughout life.... Very interesting. You will certainly find a lot about C. G. Jung and his psychoanalytical psychology and you will understand more terms, questions and tools for observing the fashion world among fashion designers and on the street.
What's interesting to me is that (especially so with guy's fashion) the outfits that we call basic get a lot of attention from girls and they fawn over it but online it gets kinda shit on by a lot of people because they think it's a lack of effort when people have a relatively minimalistic style. The more advanced and niche the style is, the more hate it also seems to get, but the praise it gets from a select few probably means more because the ones giving it are in the know. I’m a woman who’s pretty gender non conforming, and I have become more uncomfortable with showing my body. One of the main issues is because of stares and weird comments I get.
I see a lot of talk about personal style, and I ask genuinely what are ways of creating "personal style" that isn't influenced? (Not saying I have a truly personal style or this is the right method, I'm just giving view about where I'm coming from) I personally myself try to learn and gain inspiration using only things I actively participate in or am adjacent to via the people around me. I've been trying to shop more locally (like boutique's that carry local brands, flea markets, ect.) to force myself out of the consumer mindset more and truly see what it is about clothing I like and why I think they're worth being put in my wardrobe. I've been trying to free hand modify/flip some of my pieces because I feel that is the most personal touch I can give. And I've been looking into sourcing vintage magazines/lookbooks/whatever for more socially looked down upon brands/designers because I feel like the artistic merit to be producing some of the garments back then have more pure than the intentions then what's made now a-days.
Unless you become a tailor it's always influenced. I mean. I almost regret the day I stopped just wearing black shirts and blue pants. Still. You buy what's on offer. Get a book about fashion history showing what people wore Back 100, 400 , 3000 years ago. Today you mostly find simple clothes. Even something like fluffy alladin style pants( for men) you'd have to order online. Many cuts are simplistic. Look at button shirt collars. There could be fun shapes meant to go up high neck. Maybe up to your ears shaped like your neck? So much could be.
Hey JQ, I love your videos but lately it feels like you reach the same conclusion every time. That fashion is more of a social construct, people wear clothes as a status symbol, and etc... While I think these are valid point, it's getting a bit repetitive. Maybe trying to do some kind of study or social experiment to hammer in these points (with friends or strangers or fans) would be more interesting and facilitate more growth for your channel. Your leather care, fragrance, and haircare type videos were great IMO cause they offered some genuine educational content and you only made 1 of each. Stuff like pick up videos, vlogs, and short opinion rants are also fun mindless content cuz their content changes each time. Overall, I love ur videos cuz ure honest and critical ab the industry and urself, but also a bit of a change of pace would be cool. That's just my take, thx if u read it.

I am all for more philosophical fashion content, it's just that most creators just talk out of their asses. All the concepts tend to be fishy and hardly defined. Hey JQ, I love your videos but lately it feels like you reach the same conclusion every time. That fashion is more of a social construct, people wear clothes as a status symbol, and etc... While I think these are valid point, it's getting a bit repetitive. Maybe trying to do some kind of study or social experiment to hammer in these points (with friends or strangers or fans) would be more interesting and facilitate more growth for your channel. Your leather care, fragrance, and haircare type videos were great IMO cause they offered some genuine educational content and you only made 1 of each. Stuff like pick up videos, vlogs, and short opinion rants are also fun mindless content cuz their content changes each time. Overall, I love ur videos cuz ure honest and critical ab the industry and urself, but also a bit of a change of pace would be cool. That's just my take, thx if u read it.

I am all for more philosophical fashion content, it's just that most creators just talk out of their asses. All the concepts tend to be fishy and hardly defined. "Personal style" for example, which people usually just use to describe somebody who wears an unusual sillouette or smaller brands lmao. I am not hating the guy at all, I really enjoyed some of his videos, but if you ever dabbled into some sociology or other human studies you would recognize that he really isn't saying anything substancial in this. Stop being a stan, he can handle some critique
