  • Microsoft Flight Simulator is a very serious game about piloting very complicated planes around an accurate model of the entire world.
Naturally, this goes about as well as you'd expect.

"Good evening ladies and gentleman. On this flight from Heathrow to Edinburgh we'll be following the M4 north at an altitude that allows me to read the road signs. We shall be disilluminating the seatbelt signs by Norwich, and hope to begin our descent at around Newcastle. Thank you all, and hope you have a pleasant flight."

@@ManyATrueNerd You actually did pretty well with flying, for someone who has never flown a plane before. BTW the "delorean numbers" are your radio frequencies. typically you would have one set for general air traffic and one set to the air traffic control so you always have someone you can radio in to if you have an emergency. Additionally if you are flying at an altitude of 18,000 ft or higher you are flying based solely of your cabin instruments and what the air traffic control person is telling you.

A Cessna flying low is not that big of a deal. Certainly not nearly as big of a deal as ignoring the huge pop up telling you to retract your gear and how to do it.

@@Aaron-xq6hv Well see, by law if you are over a crowded settlement (Area of Congestion) you must keep a min of a 1000ft as measured from the peak of the tallest obstacle. The only exception to this rule is when you are landing or taking off. So when Jon was flying over oxford at an illegal altitude. Which is technically worse than forgetting to retract landing gear. • @farmerboy916
      @farmerboy916 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

@@MelficeSilesius There's a bigger problem with that; people from outside the cities would need to commute to the closest public transport terminal, which is unlikely to be nearby them. You'd either need truly massive feeder systems, or truly massive parking lots that would service what multiple feeder branches would have serviced.
I really can't remember where I saw the video, but it went in depth as to why public transit isn't super viable for the US; there's always that great video about why trains in the US are bad which explains it well too. For comparison of size, the US is about the size of all of Europe all the way to the Urals, with about the population of eastern or western Europe (they're similar in pop, if you divide europe in half rather than other subregions). In addition, our population is more spread out (and not in cities but often in massive suburbs; I've never so much as walked to the shops because it'd take me 20 minutes for a one way trip to the nearest crappy one, and this isn't even a very big suburb), but also the jobs are more concentrated in the actual cities. And the population not spread out in ways that make great sense for public transport.
Now, being from California, I know a fair bit about commuting problems. For reference, California is slightly smaller than Sweden, with a population somewhere between Ukraine and Poland. It is absolutely terrible when it comes to entire cites that are entirely modern fabrications of massive neighborhood developments spread across a number of square miles with like a couple of shops. Mine is a city of about 200k, and would take about an hour to bike across the entire thing assuming absolutely no interruptions. People commute, by car, up to a couple of hours; for instance, there are people in Sacramento who will commute to San Francisco (really more places near SF than SF itself), though that is less common. Look at, if you will, the Greater Sacramento Metropolitan Area, as it's a great example of the problems here. People from pretty much a hundred miles+ around it will commute in to work. And the larger your radius, the area needed to be serviced grows quite a bit more than linearly.
There is the problem of who would run such a system; you see, the US system puts a great deal of power in the hands of the states and lesser local governments. So there's not going to be any federal public transit system (and such an idea would be idiotic, if nothing else because of the sheer scale of such a thing). The states might run some things in a limited fashion, but often they're uninterested, tend to come up cash strapped for one reason or another, and tend to be less than effective at a great wide variety of things. Counties and the like are often too small and poorly funded, and such public transit would need to go inter-county in most cases because the counties were there before the cities and population centers. You also have other internal divisions problems adding to this; commuting across state lines would bring you in contact with a number of entirely different public transit systems run by different people with different priorities.
Also, the population keeps drastically shifting. My city was basically a town with mostly farmland and a couple subdivisions in the early 90's, and had reached full size by mid 2000's, while inner Detroit has practically been entirely abandoned.
It's just not "hurr durr, stupid Americans can't figure out that public transport would fix all their problems." A major reason for our current traffic issues is that many of the slated (or proposed) improvement projects to make commuting better by car can't get done. Take Sacramento again; highway traffic into and out of this major transportation hub (it has 3 major freeways running through it); on two sides traffic flow is mainly limited by bridges, and one of those is only three lanes, which is narrower than the highway is on either side of it _which already needs to be widened._ The US's infrastructure is also generally crumbling in the first place, and it's not even due to a lack of spending. The US spends a reasonable or higher (I forget which) amount on it than other countries per capita (iirc). It's just gotten (at all levels of government at least) less and less efficient at both spending that money and making that money go further for reasons that are hard to even figure out. I'm really wishing I remembered the video where I saw that, now.

Fun fact, your artificial horizon (the blue and brown part) actually can't show you upside down as its physically limited. Not sure how it is in game as I haven't done so with the 152. Also I'd recommend using the 172 as it comes with a glass cockpit which is easier to learn and presents the information better imo. It also has autopilot which can help quite a bit.
Also Cessna is company not type. You're flying a 152 which is a common trainer aircraft.
Also the beep is your stall horn. Basically a whistle in the wing that makes a noise if the angle of attack is too high (leading to a stall).
Your pitch doesn't actually determine if you're going to stall or not. It's how the air is flowing over your wings. When the angle of attack is too high the air no longer sticks to your wings and you lose lift.
    As for the instruments.
The go starting from the top left,
Air speed indicator. (Shows airspeed from air coming into your pitot tube and compared to air from a static port),
Your artificial horizon (uses a gyroscope to show you level and is spun with air from your pitot tube),
    A clock,
Your altimeter shows altitude by comparing air from your static port to a sealed compartment)
A localizer (I may have this name wrong as I don't fly gauge aircraft anymore) for navigation (same as the one below it. Using both allows you to triangulate your position),
On the left again, a turn coordinator which shows the bank of your aircraft as well as how coordinated your turns are. (The more coordinated the more comfortable as well as the more efficient you are.),
A compass, vertical speed indicator. (this shows how fast up and down you are moving)
The more important a gauge the closer it is to the top left as your eyes should always try to be outside the cockpit for VFR. It's important to keep an eye on the gauges but remember to look outside too. This is one of the biggest things that people mess up when first learning to fly.
I'd be more then happy to answer any questions you may have as well
